Seventh heaven 7’s rugby action awaits fans D
uring December, the proverbial seventh heaven will once more become a firm and very exciting reality when Nelson Mandela Bay plays host to the South African leg of the IRB Sevens Rugby World Series.
On December 13 and 14, spectators will be afforded the thrilling experience of seeing the world’s best on the field, while off-field a world of wonders awaits, as the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and surrounds rise to the occasion with their customary hospitality and an abundance of spectacular sights and sounds to absorb. According to Port Elizabeth-born, veteran Blitzbok-forward, Frankie Horne, he could think of no better venue to host the South African leg of the HSBC IRB Sevens. “PE is known as the ‘Friendly City’ and this really is true. I may be slightly biased, but when it comes to the beautiful beaches, the friendly people and the excellent facilities, I could think of no better place in the country to host this leg of the tournament.” Horne – who holds the world record for 60 consecutive World Series tournaments for the Springbok Sevens – said apart from his passion for the region, a bit of superstition may also form part of his preference for playing the SA leg at the world-class Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “Last year we beat New Zealand in the final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium just two days after the passing of our late former President Nelson Mandela. We played for Madiba on that day.” According to Horne, the crowd support at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is another reason why the team loves playing here. “It is the home leg of the tournament and it always is great playing in front of a home crowd. But the supporters in the Metro take home-based support to a whole new level. The

Businessman helps unemployed man set up car wash

For the past four years, Michael Tswangu has been operating on the square between Daly Street and Lances Lane in the central business area of Uitenhage as a car guard and washing vehicles. “It all started when one day he asked us for water to wash cars. I decided all right, we’ll provide him with two 50 litre buckets of water on a daily basis and see how it goes,” said Nicholas Gomes, owner of Waterford Tree & Beer Yard. “Since then I’ve watched him and recognized that he really has pride in his work
and does a good job. So, I told him I wanted to show him how to run his own small business.” Gomes decided to assist him with the donation of a tool box filled with a complete cleaning kit, all the needed car wash equipment, a vacuum cleaner, brush and scoop, new security vest and a lock to keep his kit safe. He also donated bright red golf-shirts to Michael printed with the name “Michael’s Car Wash & Security” on it. “I want him to create his own income in this way and really think that more people in the world should help one another. Not for making profit, but because you can, and
because you care to change your community,” said Gomes. According to him businesses should take responsibility in their immediate areas, contributing by picking-up paper and dirt, cutting lawn and make it more presentable. “One can not wait for authorities to do it. Do it yourself, get people to help you clean the area. In this way you assist unemployed to get bread on their table and the town will be more presentable.” Michael Tswangu said, “I am very happy for receiving all these items. This will help me make my clients even more pleased with the job I like to do. Now the cars will shine!”

Signs And Wonders Mission has been working in the Northern Areas for the past 10 years, running holiday programs, handing out food parcels and offering counselling. One of their greatest highlights is their annual Christmas Party, where they reward the children who have diligently attended the holiday programs throughout the year. “Many of the children attending our holiday programs are living in underprivileged circumstances and in some cases the situation at home is in a dire state,” said Clive Davids, Director: Signs & Wonders Mission. This year they would like to reward the 400 children between the age of 4 and 15
years, with a special “shoe box” gift containing special goodies that will take care of some of their basic needs. They request the community’s assistance to aid them in this regard. Some of the items needed to add to the shoe box include: toothbrushes and toothpaste, face cloths, soap, roll-on and spray, a new clothing item (like a t-shirt or shorts), second hand clothes are also welcome, a toy appropriate for boys and girls aged 4-15, stationery for school and a party pack containing sweets and cool drink. )If you are able to assist Signs and Wonders with one or more of these items please contact Clive at 061 339 1314 or Marilyn at 078 669 6309.

Youth centre turns entrepreneur with home industry HEILIE COMBRINCK

osterland Youth Centre, a non-profit organisation accommodating 106 children, placed in its care by the Children’s Court, embarked on a new venture, being the proud owners of Oosterland Opstal home industry in Uitenhage. “Oosterland Opstal is one of our sustainability projects to generate funds in assisting the centre with projects empowering our children with positive life skills allowing them to take responsibility for their life and future,” said Riaan Marais, Director of Oosterland Youth Centre. Oosterland Opstal, situated at 13 Penford Avenue, is managed by the multi-talented Adele Phillipson, former owner of Olive Tree Coffee Shop and Opstal. “This is a win-win situation. I know in my heart that this home industry will be to the benefit to the centre and its children,” said Adele Phillipson. Cakes, catering & platters Oosterland Opstal offers a coffee shop and bistro and also a variety of quality foods, speciality and themed cakes as well as all home industry products. It is well known for its extraordinary and appetising platters to suit any occasion or clients’ health preferences. Other popular meals include their lasagne and bobotie which are made by order. Other items include snacks, jams, a variety of gifts and catering for functions, from kiddies parties to special celebrations or office parties. Gifts & kiddies parties Oosterland Opstal has a secure play area
for kids whilst parents can relax on the deck. Kerk vier 40ste bestaansjaar Die Shalom Rapha Familiekerk op Despatch vier vanjaar sy 40ste bestaansjaar met sang, lofprysing, ’n erediens en ’n prettrap fietsroete. Al dié aktiwiteite gebeur vanaf eerskomende Vrydag tot Sondag, 14-16 November. Plaaslike fietsryers word uitgenooi om deel te neem aan die 4km fietsroete ter viering van die kerk se 40ste bestaansjaar. Pastoor Jaques Killian en sy vrou Veronica is vanjaar 13 jaar by dié gemeente, die langste wat ’n pastoorspaar nog aangebly het. Oor die 40 jaar was daar 10 pastore met oorlede Tom Strydom as die stigter van die kerk in 1970 by ’n huis in Bosmanstraat. Die kerk was daarna vir ’n rukkie in die stadsaal se sysaal, daarna in ’n tent op die oop stuk grond waar die kerksaal in 1971 vir ’n
skamele R2 000 gebou is. Die kerk is in 1974 gebou. Die kerk het huidiglik sowat 500 lidmate en volgens Pastoor Killian het hy 13 jaar gelede begin met slegs 12 lede en die kerk was kniediep in die skuld. “Ons het huidiglik ’n baie lekker groep jongmense in die kerk en ons fokus is op families om saam die Here te dien.” Soos die gemeente gegroei het was dit spoedig nodig om die kerk te vergroot. “’n Sakeman, Wendell Aspeling, het soos ’n engel oor ons pad gekom en op sy eie onkoste die kerk vergroot. “Die Here het in sy hart gewerk en sedertdien het dit net bly groei en kyk ons nie terug nie,” sê Pastoor Killian wat vandag sy 40ste verjaardag vier.

Citrus Challenge relay at Kirkwood
Mini golf day at Winterberg
The Citrus Challenge 4x4km relay run as well as a 4km fun walk will be held in Kirkwood tomorrow as a fundraising initiative organised by Kirkwood Care Centre in conjunction with the local citrus growers and pack houses. Kirkwood Care Centre is a psychiatric facility and the aim of the Citrus Challenge is to have fun whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle and also to raise funds in support of a local school in the Moses Mabhida township. According to Esley Erasmus, Occupational Therapist and Citrus Challenge event organiser, twenty teams from various farms and pack houses will participate. “The support from the local citrus industry has been overwhelming and this is very positive, amidst the recent protest actions which made headline news,” said Erasmus. The action takes place at Suncitrus Packhouse with registration at 08:00.
A mini golf day, presented by Eleven Stars Collegians Cricket Club will be hosted at Winterberg Primary sports grounds tomorrow afternoon. The action of this Par 3 competition starts at 14:30 and will continue until 17:00 and thereafter a prize-giving will be held. There will be prizes for the best score, the worst score and a lucky draw hamper. Braai packs as a cash bar will be available. Tickets for participation are R60 and funds raised will be utilized to upgrade the cricket field. Men as well as female golfers are most welcome. Participants are requested to bring along their own putters and golf equipment. The cricket club wishes to thank all sponsors for their support of this fun event.
