Met ’n meer onlangse besoek was die reuk van riool om die Swartkopsrivier, ligweg gestel, walglik. Terwyl dit voel of die stank ’n mens se keel met elke asemteug laat brand, is dit die inwoners van Aloes, ’n woonbuurt langs dié rivier, wat die ergste geraak word. “Ons bly nou al só vir meer as drie maande. Die kinders word uit die water gehou, maar steeds kry hulle erge maagwerkings, velprobleme en kopsere,” het Caitlint Leander, ’n inwoner, gesê. Jenny Rump, omgewingsbeampte van die Zwartkops-bewarea, sê baie van die Aloes-inwoners is tans weens maagprobleme platgetrek en baie swak. “Hulle kan nie vir mediese hulp ver stap nie.” Sy het ’n versoek aan die munisipaliteit gerig om mediese hulp aan die inwoners te stuur. “Maar hulle (munisipaliteit) het gesê hulle sien nie die noodsaak om mediese bystand te verskaf nie. “Die inwoners kon volgens hulle hul maagprobleme ook deur ander faktore soos besmette melk of kos opgedoen het.”

Swifts Rugby Club reunion and memorial service HEILIE COMBRINCK One of a kind. That is the former Swifts Rugby Club from Uitenhage, as it most probably is the only rugby club in South Africa which was founded by a reverend. In celebration of the club’s rich history a memorial service and reunion will be held in Uitenhage on February 1st. The club’s history dates back to 1890 when Reverend Charles Bloomer Jecks of St Katharine’s Anglican Church in Uitenhage selected

a team of youngsters from the church choir and entered them in the local junior rugby league. At first they were called the St Katherine’s Choir rugby team, but during 1891 the Swifts Rugby Football Club was established. By 1894 they joined the Eastern Province Rugby Union and during 1896 the club delivered its first Springbok player, F.R. Myburgh. During 1906 all five teams of Swifts were top on their respective leagues in the Grand Challenge finals. According to Cicil Hayward, convenor of the Swifts memorial service and reunion,

there are still several former Swifts club members in the Uitenhage, Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth areas. “Last year’s memorial service at St Katherine’s Church was packed. It was a joyous occasion as some of the members have not seen one another in years,” said Hayward. “The bring-and-braai afterwards, held at the Uitenhage Cricket Club through the sharing of good old memories brought many a sparkle to the eyes of Swifts rugby players.” The annual Swifts Rugby Club memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 1st

at 11:00, St Katharines Anglican Church in Market Street, Uitenhage. Afterwards there will be a gathering for tea at the parish hall. Following these proceedings, fires will be lit at the Uitenhage Cricket Club (opposite Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre) for a bringand-braai and reunion. oncerns over the impact of the controversial proposed fish farm on the approach and take-off of airplanes from the Port Elizabeth airport were aired on Monday. This was during a public hearing for stakeholders by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) which was held to discuss the issue of the location of Algoa Bay Sea Based Aquaculture Development Zone (fish farm) right on the doorstep of Nelson Mandela Bay’s prime tourist beaches. Over 70 stakeholders, including the Airports Company of SA (ACSA) attended the hearing. Many stakeholders who are objecting to the development took the floor to address their concerns of the impending fish farm. Shirley Parker-Nance a marine biologist from Pro-Dive who is heading the “Stop PE Fish Farm” campaign said the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) together with DEA agreed to send the Responses to the Appeals to the relevant stakeholders by yesterday.
