k gaan net ’n bietjie dans,” het Tanya Howard, toe nog 14 jaar oud, vir haar ouers gesê toe sy na Johannesburg vertrek het om by die Nasionale Skool van Kunste aan te sluit. Min het Howard tóé geweet dat dié “bietjie dans” baie dans in Kanada sou word. En só uitstekend dat sy al van 2007 af as eerste solis van die National Ballet of Canada die dansverhoog betree. In Uitenhage skud John en Glenise Howard glimlaggend kop. Wie sou kon dink dat hul dogter, (nou 35) wat op vyf met haar eerste danslesse by Carol Groenewald in Uitenhage begin het, die koue Kanada sedert 1998 aan die brand sou dans? Dat sy ook haar rol in opvoerings soos The Sleeping Beauty, The Four Seasons, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet en Cinderella so meesterlik sou vertolk? En dat sy Toronto haar permanente adres saam met haar man, Bob Eichvald, en hul twee kinders, Lia (6) en Benjamin (2), sou maak? “Ons BBM mekaar elke dag en ons Skype so elke twee weke sodat die kleinkinders by oupa en ouma kan spog oor die toertjies wat hulle al kan uithaal,” sê Glenise. Trots het veral nuwe betekenis vir hulle gekry toe Tanya die hoofrol in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland gekry het. Tanya beskou ook hierdie rol as een van die groot hoogtepunte in haar dansloopbaan. “My rol as Alice is baie uitdagend omdat ek 106 minute lank sonder ophou op die verhoog

moet wees. In die hele produksie kry ek iets soos sewe minute se rustyd,” het Tanya in ’n telefoniese onderhoud uit Kanada gesê. “En jy moet ook altyd getrou bly aan die storie . . . wanneer ek Alice is, kyk ek deur háár oë en voel soos sy gevoel het toe sy alles vir die eerste keer gesien het,” gesels sy geesdriftig verder. Groenewald, by wie Tanya tot op 14-jarige ouderdom bly dans het, het dié soort toegewyde talent al vroeg in Tanya opgemerk. Dit was juis toe Tanya 14 was dat Groenewald haar ouers aangeraai het om haar na die Nasionale Skool vir Kunste in Johannesburg vir die voltooiing van haar skoolloopbaan te stuur sodat haar besonderse talent wyer blootstelling kon geniet. Dis toe dat Tanya haar ouers met die woorde “ek gaan net ’n bietjie dans” gegroet het. ’n Talentsoeker van die National Ballet of Canada het Tanya kort daarna raakgesien en haar genooi om by hulle in Toronto aan te sluit. “Ons het Tanya nog altyd aangespoor om haar drome te volg en om te doen wat haar gelukkig maak – en kyk waar is sy nou!” Die grootste gehoor voor wie sy al opgetree het, was by die 2010 Winter Olimpiese Spele in Vancouver. “Koningin Elizabeth was nogal een van die gaste,” gesels Tanya verder oor die foon. “Dit was ’n groot oomblik!” Tanya oefen minstens ses uur per dag, vier dae per week, en sy probeer ’n balans tussen haar rol as ma en danseres behou. Haar vrye tyd is gesinstyd, beklemtoon sy tydens die onderhoud.

Girokopter vlieënier ter ruste gelê LOURENS SCHOEMAN Die begrafnis van Kent Forster wat verlede Woensdag saam met Shaun Mulder, sy passasier, gesterf het toe sy girokopter naby die Uitenhage-vliegveld neergestort en aan die brand geslaan het, is gister gehou. Forster se diens was in die Doxa Deo-kerk in Kabegapark waarna hy in die Forest Hill-

begraafplaas ter ruste gelê is. Hy sou verlede Saterdag deelgeneem het aan die jaarlikse Wings &-Wheels-fees en die Doug Davidson Memorial-lugskou op die vliegveld waar die ongeluk gebeur het. Sy vrou het kort ná sy dood gesê Forster was mal oor vlieg. Hy was baie positief en ’n perfeksionis. “Ons sal seker nooit weet wat werklik gebeur het nie. Dit blyk dat die enjin weens die

slag waarmee die girokopter die grond getref het, van agter af vorentoe geskuif en op hulle beland het. Die tuig het kort daarna aan die brand geslaan,” het sy gesê. Forster het gesê die ergste waaraan sy gewoond sal moet raak, is die stilte. Haar man het nooit stilgesit nie en hy was lief vir gesels. “Wanneer Jean, ons seun, eers terug in die Kaap is waar hy werk, sal ek die stilte alleen moet trotseer.

“En dit sal nie maklik wees nie,” het sy bygevoeg. Die 31-jarige Mulder, van Kempton Park, was ’n vlugingenieurstudent by die SuidAfrikaanse Lugmag. Hy en vlugsers. Coert Steynberg was besig om ’n gebied vir opleidingsdoeleindes by die vliegveld in te rig toe Forster vir Mulder vermoedelik genooi het om ’n draai saam met hom te vlieg.

Die voormalige Suid-Afrikaanse ovaalbaankampioen Pieta Victor het in sy rooi en wit 2.1 gemodifiseerde ovaalbaankar die vlieënier Russel Phillips in sy selfgeboude Whisper X vliegtuig die stryd aangesê in rondes oor ’n grasserige 4km lange aanloopbaan by die Uitenhage vliegveld. “Ons het op en af teen mekaar resies gejaag. Dit het goed gegaan en ek kon ’n spoed van net so onder 200km/h op die 1km pylvak haal voor ek moes spoed verminder om om te draai,” het Pieta Victor opgewonde gesê. Phillips in sy Whisper, met ’n vlerkspan van 8meter en maksimum spoed van 175 knope, moes ’n veel wyer draai maak om weer oor die aanloopbaan die Corsa in te haal. Dit het Victor elke keer kans gegee om voet in die hoek te sit en die voortou te vat. “My kar het bly spin en die vliegtuig was voor. So 100m voor elke draaipunt moes ek stadiger anders sou ek nie my draai maak

nie.” In die voorlaaste kilometer voor elke draaislag het Phillips, in volle vaart,die vliegtuig se handversneller platgetrek en die Corsa ore aangesit. Maar hoe vinniger Phillips gevlieg het, hoe wyer moes hy in die lug gaan draai om terug te keer vir die volgende ronde. So, in die laaste pylvak het die Corsa ’n goeie voorsprong van 300m gehad. “Dinge het net mooi begin lyk. Dit was so

amper, amper! En toe sien ek die vliegtuig se skaduwee!” Uiteindelik het die Corsa en die Whisper gelyk die wenstreep oorgesteek! Lourens Kruger, organiseerder van die jaarlikse Wings en Wheels-fees en Doug Davidson Memorial-lugskou het gesê vanjaar se fees was “’n baie groot sukses. uir College Junior School learners encouraged 169 parents, family members and teachers to donate blood as part of their annual Adopt-a-Month Primary School Blood Donation Challenge. This was the highest number of donors recruited by Muir since the inception of the programme in 2006. Grade 4C, under the leadership of Mrs Bayman, was announced as the top performing class with 55 blood donations in total and 68% learner participation. Skye O’Connor in Grade 7C was the top individual recruiter who managed to get 16 people to donate blood as part of this initiative. The Adopt-a-Month program was designed to educate future blood donors since a person may only donate blood from the age of 16.

At the same time, learners are encouraged to motivate their parents and family members to donate, to contribute towards the national blood supply of which the demand is rising year on year. Both these goals are achieved with research showing that up to 60% of learners who participate in this programme become blood donors themselves once they reach the appropriate age. The Port Elizabeth Branch of SANBS, which includes the Uitenhage area, currently has 20 participating primary schools. “The schedule is quite full with the maximum of three primary schools adopting a month. The only way to extend this initiative is to sign up more primary schools,” said Maryke Harris from SANBS Port Elizabeth. Currently, only months that fall over school holiday periods are available, such as April, June & July. In 2014, 4 039 units of blood were collected

as a direct result of this initiative. It is believed that with the current trend, 2015 will be a record year, with more blood donors involved.

Despatch police arrest man for perjury Detectives from SAPS Despatch have arrested a 55-year-old man last week on a charge of perjury. The arrest follows an alleged armed robbery case that was reported to SAPS Despatch on Monday morning, 23 March 2015. According to the statement made to the police by the 55-year old man who is working at a secondhand shop in the Main Road of Despatch, he was held at gunpoint in the shop and robbed of R10 000. The alleged perpetrators fled in a vehicle parked outside the shop.

“Upon investigation it was revealed that the shop was never robbed and the police arrested the 55-year-old suspect. “The man appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court last Friday on charges ranging from perjury to theft,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Phillip Salukazana, praised the members of the police for their investigation skills and warned the public not to underestimate their abilities.

Police arrest man for corruption Members from crime intelligence and detectives from the Uitenhage police arrested a 33year-old man for corruption, after a comprehensive investigation was conducted. According to W/O Gerda Swart, the 33-yearold man, who is also a suspect in a burglary case that occurred in December 2014 in Uitenhage, attempted to purchase the case docket that implicates him. “The suspect made an appointment with the investigating officer at a complex in Uitenhage for the transaction to take place. The

suspect allegedly offered the officer a substantial amount of money for the docket to disappear,” said W/O Swart. The 33-year-old man was arrested and last Thursday appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on a charge of corruption. “This arrest should serve as a reminder to the public, that corruption is not an option and we will stop at nothing to root out corrupt activities in the Uitenhage station area,” said the Station Commander of SAPS Uitenhage, Brigadier Leonie Bentley.

Double the luck at car draws Two lucky women were given the keys to Mercedes-Benz cars, with one driving away with an additional R1 000 in her pocket at Bingo Royale “Win a Merc” draws in March. It was the second “Win a Merc” draw for Bingo Royale Cleary Park and Bingo Royale East London CBD. Junitha Tromp was the lucky resident from Salt Lake in the Port Elizabeth Northern Areas to win the second “Win a Merc”. She is also the second Salt Lake resident to win the car. The keys were handed over personally by Tony Compton, Bingo Royale Cleary Park general manager, . Bingo Royale Cleary Park was packed to capacity, with a crowd of hopefuls and spectators. More than 2 000 visitors made their way to the draw, with 1 930 people inside the venue and over 300 in the Cleary Park Mall passages. A live video feed brought the excitement and the winning numbers to big screens where visitors watched the excitement and drama unfold. “The venue was extremely festive and loud

cheers were heard from a full Bingo Royale Cleary Park and Cleary Park Mall passage as winner was announced,” said Compton. Bingo Royale East London hosted its “Win a Merc” draw on Saturday, March 14. Soliswa Silinyana was kissed twice by Lady Luck. The annual Park Tigers Baseball Tournament produced some brilliant baseball last weekend and the VW Baseball Club lifted the trophy after beating the hosts in the final 5-2. A fine batting display by captain, Wikus Oliphant, closely followed by Sheldon van Schalkwyk, Mario Schwartz, Brendon Oliphant and Anton Siebert paved the victory for VW BC. Wikus batted 3-3 with Sheldon, Mario, Brendon and Anton batting 2-3 on the day. The pitcher catcher combination of Barend Niemand and Wikus Oliphant worked well for VW on the day with Barend holding most Tigers batted at bay. In the field, Anton Schwartz at centre field was rock solid, closely followed by Brendon Oliphant at first base, who was responsible for making the most plays of the day. VW BC coach, Terrence Gouws, said he was immensely proud of the boys, as they have been working hard behind the scenes, and it paid off in the final. “Baseball was the winner and this excites us as we prepare to send our youngsters away to the IRT nationals, next week. We wish all participants well,” said Gouws. As a fitting send off to all baseballers, Keith Grobler, the in-form catcher of Red Sox, also showed his support for VW BC on the day, and this brought out the best of the guys. For Tigers Charl Ungerer, pitched the first two frames and then was replaced by Luke Jamieson, who kept most VW batters at bay, getting 5 strike outs and allowing only 2 hits in the 2 frames that he pitched. For Tigers, Luke Jamieson, tried hard during the tournament hitting the only homerun on the day, leading up to the final. Charl Ungerer, Hennie Stander and Leon Willet tried hard on the day, but they just couldn’t find the gaps, as a result of the brilliant fielding display and defence from the VW side. Piet Momberg, chairman of Park Tigers, said, “It was a great day of baseball and softball. Hats off to the Park Panthers for being victorious with the softball, it would’ve been great for the boys to lift the trophy, however it is what happens between the white lines that makes the difference.

STANDARD BANK IRONMAN AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Ironmen show their mettle in the Bay Over 2 000 triathletes competed in the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship that took place in Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday, March 29. The challenge consisted of a 3,8 km ocean swim, 180,2 km cycle and 42,2 km run. Spectators from across the globe flocked to Port Elizabeth to support their friends and family during the Ironman weekend.

They started at McArthur’s Pool and Leisure Centre. Children in the 6 to 9 age

category swam 60m and ran 1.2km while those in the 10 to 13 age category swam 100m and ran 2km. No times were recorded as the focus was on participation, experiencing the sense of accomplishing a goal and having fun. Every child was a winner, and received a Spur IRONKIDS swim cap, Spur IRONKIDS t-shirt, a great Spur and Pritt goodie bag, finisher medal and finisher certificate with their photo. – REPORTER

Phoenix Klawerjas Club, led by captain Roderick Thomas, had a good win against Kings B Team scoring 98-84. Adam Briesies and Daniel “Knaap” Lentoor of Kings KC narrowly beat Keith August and Pervu Costa 26-22. Patrick Baartman and Roderick Thomas had a slow start, but eventually ran out winners against Wellington Mila and Colin White by 26-20. Elrado Jansen and Richard Webb made sure to keep Cecil Uithaler and Henry Zeekoei at
