The ‘peanut butter blow dry’ impact on charity HEILIE COMBRINCK “Feeling good. Feeling inspired. Feeling awesome ...” These are but a few of the long list of comments made on Facebook in reaction to an extraordinary fund-raising challenge in support of charities. “It is a flippen nice idea initiated by my daughter Melissa, with the aim to support charities. Our clients’ reactions are simply just awesome and we want to thank them for their support,” said Tosca Myburgh from Tosca Hair & Beauty in Bluewater Bay. “We are having fun as clients now refer to appointments by asking for a peanut butter blow dry, jam hair dry or toilet paper wash and blow dry.” Tosca explained that the whole idea is to support identified charities on a monthly basis through the donation of what might sound like insignificant items, but which actually are necessities. “Instead of paying for a hair wash or blow dry, we request clients to donate either peanut butter, jam or toilet paper. These items are then handed over to the identified charity,” said Tosca.

It had a ripple effect as the public started to donate items other than just what the challenge is about. Zulyka Scott, fund-raiser at Oosterland Youth Centre, one of the beneficiaries from the Tosca Hair & Beauty’s challenge, said it was a brilliant idea and its repercussion has had an immense impact on the Centre’s budget. “We often hear people asking, ‘why fundraising or donate items to Oosterland?’ Well, firstly, it has an enormous savings impact on our tight budget and secondly although it is a non-profit organisation the basic running costs, maintenance, salaries of 58 staff members and having to pay school fees to 14 schools which our children attend, are expenditures people do not always take into consideration,” said Zulyka. Oosterland wishes to challenge local hair stylists in Despatch and Uitenhage to join in this fun way of assisting the non-profit organisation on a monthly basis through requesting their clientele to donate specific items which will be of benefit to the Centre. )For more information regarding the Oosterland Youth Centre challenge to local hair stylists please contact Zulyka Scott on 041 933 1120.

‘It is my nature to ask questions’ REPORTER The limited research that has been conducted on environmental management in small and medium-sized businesses in South Africa has been descriptive in nature, and fails to produce results that can be generalised.

With this in mind, Riyaadh Lillah (28) NMMU Business Management lecturer developed and tested a theoretical model to explain the implementation of environmental management systems in small and mediumsized businesses. Lillah said that businesses have been criticised for their contribution towards the rate of destruction of the natural environment. He adopted a quantitative survey methodology to test the proposed theoretical model. In total, 417 small and medium-sized businesses participated in the survey; 326 of these were not implementing an environmental management system, and 91 were implement-

ing such a system. Lillah this week walked across the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s stage to be awarded his doctorate titled “Environmental management systems in South African small and medium-sized businesses”. Lillah first fell in love with the new trend of greening businesses and sustainability in his undergraduate studies at NMMU. In line with the NMMU value of respect for the natural environment, NMMU residences have gradually established a commitment to sustainable student housing over the last few years. They embarked on a campaign to make the residences more eco-friendly with the aim of creating sustainable residences where students can live in harmony with ecological processes, minimise consumption and waste, and show respect for human dignity and health. Lillah has played an integral role in this initiative.

After matriculating from Brandwag High School in Uitenhage, Lillah majored in Business Management and Economics completing his degree in 2008. He then went on to obtain his BCom (Hons) in Business Management in 2009. A year later, he started working on his master’s degree in Business Management, graduating in April 2012. “Most of my postgraduate research focused on green issues,” he says. With a goal of obtaining full professorship before the age of 35, Lillah is enjoying lecturing close to 1000 first-year Business Management students. “It is my nature to ask questions; so research comes naturally. I always ask how research can be done more effectively,” he says. The Uitenhage born and bred academic says his late father Sulyman pushed him to further his studies. Sadly his dad passed away in 2009 while Lillah was busy with his honours exams. “I am dedicating my PhD to my dad.”

Revived Prickly Pear Festival to be held at Cuyler Manor HEILIE COMBRINCK The Prickly Pear Festival is back. Revived and with a different feel to it, the festival was identified by the Uitenhage Museum Board as a means of raising funds to assist with the maintenance of the three museums in the Uitenhage area. “Museums are an integral part of our history and forms a reference point for the people of the area. It is thus vital that we preserve our history in order to educate everyone living in and visiting the area,” said event manager Patrick “Tururu” Lindoor. According to him the board faces various challenges to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of the museums. Therefore a programme featuring various national artists was compiled catering for a diverse crowd with the aim to maximise the opportunity of raising much needed funds. The weekend programme includes nation-

al artists Loyiso Bala, Arno Jordaan, soapie stars from 7de Laan namely Jo da Silva (Gita MacGregor) and Vinette Ebrahim (Aunty Charmaine). Top local artists to perform at the festival include Chapter Three, Lee-Ann Wales & Les Simons, Tururu, Transformaz and Early B The Rapper. Other festival attractions include a Miss Prickly Pear beauty pageant, vintage car display by Concept Crew from Despatch, potjiekos competition, talent contest, kiddies arena, various stalls, go-karts and paint ball shooting. ‘Ons besef nou éérs die vloedskade’ LOURENS SCHOEMAN Die stormreën wat Despatch twee weke gelede getref het, het veral huiseienaars in Hollandstraat erg laat deurloop onder waterskade. Maar, dan is daar ook die verhale van diere wat hul mense-ouers vroegtydig teen die “groot water” gewaarsku het. In een geval is die eienaar deur haar hond wat aanhoudend begin blaf het, gewek, en in ’n ander geval is ’n vrou weer deur haar kat wakker gemaak. Hoewel niemand nog kan verstaan hoe die stormwater só vinnig en só hoog kon opstoot nie, het talle die vermoede uitgespreek dat die stormwaterdreine verstop kon wees. Die storie doen die ronde dat munisipale werkers dié dreine vinnig kom skoonmaak het ná die reën. Cathy Potgieter het vertel hoe sy en haar twee seuns, Marcél en Curwin, hul buurvrou Magda Bosman, angstig uit haar huis hoor roep het sy kan nie haar huis se deure oopmaak nie. “Hulle het dadelik oor die sesvoet grensmuur gespring en die voordeur oopgeskop toe hulle dit nie kon oopkry nie. “Sy was so geskok dat sy skaars op haar bene kon staan en moes ondersteun word om tot by ons te kom. Een inwoner het selfs buitebande van sy viertrekvoertuig in die erf van die inwoner wat aan die agterkant van sy huis grens, gekry.

Rugby team doctor speaks at breakfast HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage High School Alumni (UHPPTA) will be hosting a men’s breakfast with past-pupil Dr Enver Katzen, from the class of ‘79, as the keynote speaker. Dr Katzen, a director of a group medical practice in Bloemfontein which deals mostly with paediatrics and sports injuries, will address guests on the topic of “the positive role that role models can play in the adolescent years”. Dr Katzen is a former EP and SA champion at athletics and also was known for outstanding skills on the rugby field. Although born in the heart of the Karoo in Middelburg, he

matriculated at Uitenhage High School and furthered his studies in Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch where he obtained his MB.ChB degree. He completed the theory part of a MSc in Sport Medicine at the University of Pretoria and worked at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth as a Medical Officer. He then went into private practice in Bloemfontein where his involvement in professional rugby started as team doctor. The various teams he assisted include the Free State U/19 team, Free State U/21, Free State Vodacom team and Free State Super 14 franchise team. In between Dr Katzen was on the medical panel that arranged the Cricket World Cup

Cyclists take the road to conference HEILIE COMBRINCK

ix cyclists plan to cover a distance of nearly 340km in six days between Despatch and Middelburg with the eventual aim of attending the Karoo Mighty Men conference. “We will start our cycling tour on Saturday at Despatch Superspar following the route to Kirkwood, Steytlerville, Klipplaat, Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet and finally reaching Middelburg,” said Marius Erasmus, one of the Mighty Men Driven by God Cycle Tour members. This is the second year that these cyclists are tackling the gruelling Karoo conditions en route and as build-up to the conference visit communities on their way. “We would like to achieve our higher purpose by serving needy communities on our way with food, clothing and Christian literature,” said Erasmus. The participating cyclists include Marius Erasmus, Tian Erasmus (12), Sakkie Erasmus, Sieg Slabbert, Wayne Clarke and Taylor Randall who will be accompanied by a support team consisting of Natasha Erasmus, Suzette and Garfield Ingram. “We wish to thank all our sponsors and the public for their support in making it possible to distribute the above-mentioned items to the communities in need,” said Erasmus. Ex-pupils to tackle vandalism at school Former pupils of McCarthy Comprehensive School are planning to take action and start with programmes instilling a sense of pride and dignity as the school is a target of vandalism. When Riebeek College Girls’ High School heard the devastating news of the fire at the Uitenhage SPCA, they sprang into action to help. “The girls brought donations to school and the response was incredible” said Marilyn Woods, Principal of Riebeek College Girls’High School. Mrs Skeates, teacher in charge of the SPCA club at Riebeek, and Carla Ferreira, Head of the SPCA club, said that they were delighted to be going on this outing with such a lot of items to hand over. Annually, the club hands over a cheque to the Uitenhage SPCA at the end of the year with funds raised

through cake sales, civvies days, colouring-in competitions and other innovative fundraising projects. Chiara Rossi, a member of the SPCA Club said, “We went to the SPCA to deliver food to feed all the homeless animals. It was our duty as Riebeek girls to march in and save the day for our furry friends. “With no doubt everyone left with a little piece of them wishing they could take all the animals home with them.” Carla Ferreira commented on the trip saying, “It was also a great honour to help the SPCA with their food collection. “A worthy cause we are grateful to support”.

Port Elizabeth Career Evening

In a project to help provide personal hygiene to street children, Operation Child Clean-up will be held on Saturday with the aim to provide up to 30 children with a hot shower, clean clothes and lunch. The project is initiated by Ubuntu Community Development Solutions (UCDS) a non-profit organisation with the aim of uniting and growing communities by sowing seeds of human kindness. “We would like to spoil these children as some of them might never get an opportunity like this,” said Angelique Nell from UCDS. “We have requested donations in the form of toiletries, second hand clothes, towels and the assistance of volunteers as well as volunteer nurses and doctors

to be part of the project.” The project is hosted at the Uitenhage Central Sports complex and will not be open to the public. “Although only the children and volunteers will be allowed on the premises, we want to thank the public for their support and donations towards the project,” said Nell. It is being held in conjunction with the Uitenhage police, Uitenhage CPF, Nelson Mandela Bay Department of Sports and Recreation, Mureedah Botha from the POPS Foundation, Pick n Pay Penford and Despatch Superspar. Klawerjas players ready for nationals This year Uitenhage will play host to the annual South African Klawerjas Board of Control tournament which will be held at the Uitenhage Town Hall from April 30th until May 3rd. Teams from the Eastern Cape are looking forward and are prepared to take on their rivals from the Western Cape. In the recent Uitenhage Klawerjas Union (UKU) competition, which was held as part of players’ preparation, the UKU A team narrowly won 92-90 against the UKU B team. “I am confident that our team is on the right track,” said De Porres Bruiners, manager of the UKU B team.
