Tracy Weise, handelaarshoof van Market Square Volkswagen Uitenhage, het dié toekennings ontvang tydens Volkswagen Suid-Afrika se jaarlikse Grand Prix-aand wat by Kyalami Park in Midrand gehou is. “Die motorindustrie is tans onder geweldige druk. Maar met ’n wenspan soos hierdie by die Uitenhage VW-handelaar, vir wie die menslikheid in die proses van karkoop die belangrikste is, hou ons die wiele goed aan die rol,” het Weise gesê. Sy het vier keer ’n draai op die podium gemaak om namens Market Square Volkswagen Uitenhage toekennings te ontvang. “Ons is in die wolke oor ons toekenning vir ons kliënte-tevredenheid. Uit al die sowat 107 VW-handelaars regoor die land was ons 0.1% agter die VW-handelaar in Grahamstad wat gewen het. “Ons is ook aangewys as die wenners van kliënte-tevredenheid in die B-kategorie. “Dit sê alles. Ons kliënte se lojaliteit en tevredenheid reflekteer die diens wat ons hier bied. Sonder die karwaspersoneel se toegewydheid sou kliënte nie tevrede wees met ’n halfskoon voertuig nie. “Sonder ons tee-vrou se toegewyd-

“Ons Mastercars span is uniek. In die motorhandelaarbedryf is daar ’n redelike vinnige verandering van personeel. Maar hierdie span kom reeds vanaf 2010 saam. Dié tipe lojaliteit en toegewydheid kry jy nie maklik nie.” Die vierde toekenning aan Market Square Volkswagen Uitenhage was as wenners van die Diensdepartement in die B-kategorie.
“Hierdie is losvoor die moeilikste departement vir enige handelaar om te bestuur. So, weereens, om die wenner te wees is ’n bewys dat ons personeel harde bene kou en sorg dat kliënte tevrede is,” het Weise gesê. No more free vaccines at private clinics TANYA VAN ZYL

HE Eastern Cape Department of Health has stopped supplying private clinics and pharmacies with free government vaccines, which means parents will now either have to pay vast amounts to have their babies and children vaccinated at these facilities, or make use of government clinics where the vaccines are still available to the public at no cost. This decision was made by the department because they were “not comfortable with the idea that private clinics and pharmacies were charging a levy on vaccines that we are providing to them free of charge,” said Sizwe Kupelo, spokesperson of the EC Department of Health. “These vaccines are available at all public health facilities at no cost,” Kupelo added. Dewald van Eck, owner and pharmacist at Klinicare Lorraine, said they used to provide the free state stock vaccines and then only charged a levy. “This was a service we delivered to the public, because government clinics are often so busy
and people don’t want to stand in long queues,” Van Eck said. But Kupelo said that was “an unfortunate excuse”. “We are doing everything in our power to improve our services. Currently we cover 84% of the total population. If people have a problem with long queues at the government clinics, they can pay for the vaccines at the private clinic.” According to Van Eck, parents who opt to make use of private clinics or pharmacies can expect to pay the following fees for vaccinations* (estimated costs): Babies 6 weeks – R1 500 10 weeks – R420 14 weeks – R1 500 9 months – R900 18 months – R600

Not necessarily, believes Teresa Hayward, registered private midwife in Port Elizabeth. “I don’t think people will not have their babies vaccinated as parents want the best for their children and will either use medical aid or go to government clinics. This is a new practice anyway. Private clinics did not always get free vaccinations,” she said. As a health professional, Hayward said she
is very pro vaccinations. “Your baby does need these injections as these diseases can really harm or kill your baby. Babies are most at risk in the first two years therefore we recommend protecting your baby as soon as possible. Police in Uitenhage are concerned regarding the alarming increase in the theft out of motor vehicles in the area. A number of incidents have been reported to police where valuables were left inside vehicles and suspects gained entrance to it and stole these valuables. “Owners are requested to double check and ensure that the vehicle is actually properly locked before leaving. “We want to warn the public to be more alert when they park their vehicles,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The Police also provided the following safety hints: *Do not leave your vehicle unlocked when you are away from it, even for only a short period.
*Make sure all windows and doors are secured before leaving the vehicle. *Do not leave your property (including loose change, shopping bags, etc) in plain view in your vehicle. *Take your valuables with you or secure them in the glove box or in the boot compartment. Do not do this in the parking lot, as thieves could be monitoring the area. *Be on the lookout for someone who is acting suspiciously and report it to the police. )Be aware of your surroundings and report criminal activity to the SAPS Crime Stop 08600 10111; Crime Line 32211; or your nearest police station.

Her unwavering support over the decades has not gone unnoticed by both the local community and fellow Lion members,” said Lion Van Niekerk. Both Oberholzer and his good lady Marie have been bestowed with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest Recognition in Lionism, for Service to the Community.
Music competition The regional branch of the South African Society of Music Teachers) SASMT has launched the brand new Mini Maestros music competition, which will be held in Uitenhage. The competition is focused on music pupils between the ages of 5 and 13 year of age, who are in the beginner, initial and Grade 1 phases of musical tuition. “Each participant will receive a certificate and a report sheet. The competition will steer away from distinguishing between winners and losers in determining medallists,” said Nicky Bosman, SASMT Secretary. Sy neem reeds die afgelope vyf jaar daaraan deel. “Ek wil eerder die volgende twee jaar op my studies konsentreer,” het sy gesê. Sy beplan om haar ná matriek aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch in die regte te bekwaam. Nolene het musiek in haar bloed en vertel haar hele familie is musikaal en sing gereeld saam. Sy speel ook op gehoor klavier en kitaar. “My droom is om eendag my eie musiekskool oop te maak wat landwyd bekend sal word,” het Nolene gesê. Thia en Nolene beplan om binnekort ’n CD van hul musiek uit te gee om geld vir die reis na Los Angeles bymekaar te maak. Hulle gaan ook by die Wildsfees in Kirkwood optree.

Electricity a major economic constraint Renowned political and trend analyst, JP Landman, sees the shortage and intermittent supply of electricity as the major constraint on the South African economy at present. Speaking at a breakfast of the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) at Automechanika Johannesburg, he said it was vital that power generation projects to ease the situation be fast-tracked. Landman provided detailed facts and statis-
tics to support his contention that a satisfactory and stable supply of electricity is vital not only for the effective functioning of industry and business - especially manufacturing - but it also had a very negative effect on business confidence and the sentiment of the general public. He highlighted the massive effect the lack of regular maintenance over the years has had on the state of the generating equipment, saying the maximum capacity of Eskom and

non-Eskom power generation was 44 149mW but only 29 000mW is being generated in recent times which equates to a 34% shortfall due to planned and unplanned maintenance and repairs. Landman said that demand was running at 31 000mW and this situation where demand far exceeded supply had to be rectified urgently. However, on the positive side Landman added that there was ongoing substantial investment in infrastructure by the government.
This amounted to R1.02-trillion (6.7% of GDP) for the five years to 2013 and stands at R1.08-trillion (6.2% of GDP) for the four years to 2017. This is the highest economic infrastructure spend in 25 years. Major beneficiaries are transport and logistics (R339.2-billion), energy (R166.3-billion) and water and sanitation (R117.4-billion). Landman went on to debunk the perception that the cost of an extensive and expanding social grant system was a drag on the economy.

In fact he said that even the current support for 17-million people equated to only 3.1% of GDP which is similar to the situation 10 years ago and provides stimulus to the economy in terms of purchasing power and helps to alleviate poverty. Fun walk and run at Sunridge Village shopping centre The 9th Sunridge Village Family road race will be held on Saturday at 07:00. Organised by the Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, this event will be a fun filled family affair with hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes in excess of R10 000. These include a R2 500 shopping experience from Sunridge Superspar, a major sponsor of the event. “Although an official EPA road running
event, is also caters for the whole family with distances of both 5km and 10km,” said Suzanne Fincham, Centre Manager at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre. The school with the most bulk entries will win R1 000. Schools are therefore encouraged to participate and support the event. Fun category prizes include first Family Home, Parent & Pram, Dad & Dog, Mom & Tot. Entry forms are available at Sunridge Village shopping centre, Despatch Superspar, My-

Die AGS Charisma-gemeente op Uitenhage vier eerskomende naweek die kerkgebou in Lavendersingel 33 se 40ste bestaansjaar. Die oorspronklike AGS-kerkgebou was in Johnstraat en was as die moedergemeente beskou waar vanuit verskeie AGS-families ontstaan het. Dié Johnstraat-gemeente het so gegroei dat dit nodig was om die kerk te vergroot en die oorspronklike gebou is gesloop. Die steeds groeiende gemeente het later gelei tot die stigting van die AGS Charisma gemeente in Lavendersingel 33, wat onder leiding van Pastoor Myburg, 40 jaar gelede opgerig is. Die Johnstraat-gemeente het later die AGS Lofoord-gemeente geword. Vorige leraars wat die feesvieringe gaan bywoon sluit in Tienie Delport wat van 1 April 1976 tot 31 Maart 1983 by AGS Charisma bedien het en pastoor Steve Ferreira wat van 15 Augustus 1983 tot 31 Oktober 1988 aan die stuur van sake was. Hy is opgevolg deur die herderspaar pastoor Lampie en Leonie Keuler wat vanaf 1 Desember 1988 tot op hede aan AGS Charisma verbonde is. Saterdag - gratis basaar “Ons wil die gemeenskap bedank dat ons die voorreg gehad het om hulle vir 40 jaar te kon bedien vanuit hierdie gebou. Ons wil ook aan die Skepper dank gee deur gratis verversings aan te bied aan almal wat hierheen kom,” het Pastoor Keuler gesê. Almal is welkom. Geen van die
basaarlekkernye soos pannekoek, kerrie-en-rys en basaarpoedings word verkoop nie, alles word gratis deur gemeentelede en oud-gemeentelede aan besoekers voorgesit om geniet te word. Die gratis basaar word van 09:00 tot 14:00 by die kerk in Lavendersingel 33 aangebied. Sondag - dankdiens & tent-oorhandigings Voormalige leraar pastoor Steve Ferreira tree Sondag om 09:00 as spreker op by die danken feesdiens. Na afloop van die diens sal AGS Charisma in samewerking met Judea Harvest ses tente oorhandig aan verskillende bedieninge wat gemeenteplantings doen. Oorhandiging van tente is vir bedieninge in Knysna, Mier, Oos-Londen, Despatch en twee vir Uitenhage. Volgens pastoor Keuler is die gemeente baie sterk betrokke met sendingwerk buite die kerk se grense. Dr. Danie Reynecke, ’n seun van die gemeente en direkteur van Judea Harvest gaan die verrigtinge bywoon. Judea Harvest het die afgelope 14 jaar 3 000 van hierdie tente in die veld gesit. Teach Every Nation (TEN) AGS Charimsa is die afgelope 18 maande ’n sateliet- opleidingkampus vir Teach Every Nation, wat in samewerking met die ikoon dr. Bruce Wilkonson, skrywer van Jabes se Gebed, aangebied word. Daar is reeds 14 kursusse aangebied. Studente registreer en kom vir dagopleiding met lewendige uitsendings wat vanuit

Offgrid house draws interest
<Rhino Group’s modern and ground-breaking off-grid, Eskom-free showcase at Crossways Farm Village, House Rhino, garnered much interest at the Texas A&M University when the project was presented by former alumnus, Dr Chris Mulder.
REPORTER A landmark eco-development on the outskirts of Nelson Mandela Bay pioneered by Dr Chris Mulder, as well as its self-sustaining and Eskom-free showcase home House Rhino, has drawn interest and praise from academics at a leading university in the USA.

Mulder, visited his alma mater, Texas A&M University to give a guest lecture to students and academics titled “De-urbanisation: creating sustainable rural new towns”. Mulder, who is credited with transforming Knysna’s Thesan Island from an industrial wasteland into an eco- friendly tourism destination and Blue Flag marina, is also behind the Bay’s Crossways Farm Village development near Van Stadens, a pioneering project involving building “rural new towns” which are partially or totally selfsustaining and energy independent. During his lecture last week, Mulder highlighted House Rhino – the off-grid showcase development at Crossways which has been built by Bay-based water, food and energy solutions company Rhino Group. “House Rhino was a hit,” said Mulder, adding there was immense interest in the selfsustaining nature of the house. “It was the fact that it was off the grid and on Crossways, where we have large off-grid houses mixed in with medium-sized and smaller homes, all interwoven together in a safe and walkable community environment,” Mulder said. House Rhino, Rhino Group’s showcase of off-grid solutions, generates its own energy from solar panels; creates gas for cooking from a biodigester processing waste from the house; and harvests rainwater which is then heated by means of a water heat-pump powered by the solar energy. Mulder said his concept of creating “rural new towns” centred around food security, rural development, poverty alleviation and job creation. “Rural development is a national priority and although de-urbanisation flies in the face of global trends, it is essential in South Africa,” Mulder said. Mulder has been named Texas A&M’s Most Outstanding International Alumnus twice for his community-minded eco-sensitive projects.

Die HTS Daniel Pienaar bied sedert die begin van die jaar boogskiet aan as ‘n buitemuurse aktiwiteit by die skool. Leerders het goed ingeskakel en Daniel Pienaar het onlangs hulle eerste OP boogskieters vereer. Ruan Hall, Alex Kruger, Tiaan Burger en Duncan Booysens het hulle OP kleure in dié sport verwerf. Dié jong boogskieters het aan die interprovinsiale kampioenskappe gaan deelneem in Magaliesburg waar die OP-span algeheel vierde geëindig het. Boogskiet is by die skool begin met die hulp van die SA Jagtersvereniging onder leiding van die hoofafrigter Chris Oelofse.

Uitenhage klawerjas win tournament An electrifying atmosphere dominated the national klawerjas tournament held in Uitenhage as part of the local klawerjas union’s 21st anniversary celebrations. Uitenhage Klawerjas Union’s A-team were the winners of the A division as well as the coveted Great Knock-out competition. Scottie January and Ralph Jack were in devastating form and scored an average of 40 points in the 9 games they’ve played.
