Rotarians to brave the cold for clothes

he mercury is dropping and for the destitute living under the stars or in self-made shelters, wintertime can be an enormous hardship and even life threatening.

Therefore the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South will be holding what they call “Winter Nights” where the public of Uitenhage are requested to donate blankets or good condition second-hand warm clothing, which will be distributed to the needy in the community. On Friday, 29 May, Rotarians will gather at the open area next to Engen Penford Convenience Centre at the corner of Graaff Reinet Road and Penford Avenue. Blankets and clothing can be dropped off between 17:00 and 22:00. The Rotarians will have a stand at the abovementioned open area and intend having a warm fire going. The Club has expressed its appreciation towards Gerrit Meyer from the Engen Penford Convenience Centre for their collaboration in this cause and also to the generosity of the Uitenhage community.

The Uitenhage Lions Club will be hosting a steak evening at the Despatch Rugby Club in aid of the non-profit organisation called Friends of Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Lion President André van Niekerk thanked the Despatch Rugby Club which no longer hires out the clubhouse for functions, but made a special exception to donate the use of their facilities free of charge, in that way showing support to MND sufferers. Bullying at schools Bullying at school has become a growing problem. The Uitenhage Community Policing Forum would like to address this issue through its Share project which will be held tonight at St Katharine’s church hall. “We want to tackle this huge problem through a question and answer session,” said Pat Unsworth, Chairperson of the Uitenhage CPF. Children of all ages are invited to the Share session and parents are encouraged to bring their young ones and are most welcome to also attend. The programme starts at 18:00 and refreshments will be served.

Fun run at VW factory An interesting 5km fun run taking participants through the main Volkswagen factory will be held on Saturday, June 6th. The action starts at the VWSA PeoplePavilion at 08:00 and will continue to the factory and eventually end at the PeoplePavilion. It is open not only to VWSA employees, but also the general public. The entry fee is R15 and registration can be done at Brocketts Sports, Myburg Sports as well as at Brian Bands and Sportsmans Warehouse.

Winter clothing needed Round Table 14 Uitenhage will be having their annual Winter Knights again this year. It is a hands-on project where Round Tablers across the country support their local communities by collecting blankets, old clother and canned food. This event is held during the month of June when winter hits its peak. As in the past, the public are requested to support this initiative by means of donating good condition second-hand clothing, blankets or canned food. The idea is that Round Tablers choose a venue, standing around fires in shorts and t-shirts, to experience for themselves the cold dreary nights. The various drop-off points will be announced in next week’s UD News. ’n Musiekkonsert om fondse in te samel vir ’n 12-jarige meisie van Uitenhage wat dringend ’n gehoorapparaat moet kry, word volgende week by NGK Uitenhage-Noord gehou. Carli Diedericks, ‘n graad 7 leerder van Laerskool Albertyn en ook verbonde aan die gemeente, is met ’n gehoordefek gediagnoseer en benodig ’n gehoorapparaat. Die konsert dien as ‘n fondsinsamelingsprojek om die Diedericks-gesin te help met onkostes van die gehoorapparaat wat na beraming sowat R43 000 kos. This is the case with the residents of the quiet sea village of Blue Horizon Bay, who last week officially opened their own library called Blue Horizon Bay Book Worms. “Petrol has become so expensive and everybody here is getting older. To get to the city is not easy and I had the idea to start a library service for our community,” said Jenny Bell, a self confessed bookaholic. Born and bred in England, Jenny immigrated to South Africa, lived in Johannesburg and in later years the retired Bell couple relocated to Blue Horizon Bay. “I am passionate about books and this library for our community.” The library started with 100 books which were displayed on a table. Gradually more books were received and currently there are 750. “We spoke to a couple of the husbands and said luister skattebols we need shelves. And they did their share. So much so that we can

now accommodate up to 1 000 books.” The library is situated at the local community hall and the official opening was an impromptu event with free wine and snacks, and one goal at heart “to get the word out!” The library will be open once a month, every second Thursday from 18:00 onwards. “It is operated on the simplest system in the world. I am a champion of simplicity. You take a book, write your name, the book’s reference number, your contact number date out and off you go. Free of charge, and for the love of reading.” Jenny keeps an eye on the register book and kindly reminds readers to return books when they are overdue. On the shelves there are books ranging from novels and biographies to reference works. A group of six people are involved with the library, but Jenny took it upon herself to label and mark each of the books in her own handwriting. “Its was a labour of love. It’s wonderful and I simply just love it being involved in this project,” said Jenny. More than 250 permanent residents live in the little seaside village with more than 400 houses.

Dis maar hoe dit gaan in die Baviaanskloof. Een plek, plaas of storie bied reeds só baie, jy bly net daar. Build It helps build a stronger community HEILIE COMBRINCK KwaNobuhle Build It was purchased by wellknown businessman David Goldberg fiveand-a-half years ago from an insolvent estate. Since then it has not only expanded its services year-on-year, but gained the loyalty of the community and doubled its size with the opening of a plumbing section. “Build It KwaNobuhle opened the same day as Cash Build, which was a mere 100m across the street at the KwaNobuhle Mall. I thought to myself, ‘do you really want to do this?’” said David Goldberg, who had to work hard as the predecessor of the business had a lot of damage done to Build It’s client base with outstanding deliveries and outstanding money. “Well, we successfully traded and grew year-on-year. I believe that the secret to our success is service delivery and our involvement in the community. That is why it was possible for us yesterday to have had the official opening of our extended plumbing section.” Build It KwaNobuhle’s floor space has been doubled from 800m² to 1600m² in an effort to supply what their customers want. “We found that trading in KwaNobuhle one must not be restrictive to what you have in stock. This is a growing market with customers loving new, modern and upmarket items. “They really do. It has been a big lesson to me to be attentive to customers’ needs. In the beginning we stocked cheap items, but now as a result of customers’ demand, we are stocking the best of the best.” Goldberg and Michael Mubvanyika, the manager of Build It KwaNobuhle, often visit sites, measuring work themselves and giving first hand advice to customers. Staff members regularly attend courses and lecture other staff in merchandising in advertising, to get all on the extra edge of business skills. “Build It is my passion. It offered me the opportunity to get involved and interact with the local community. This is where I want to be. “One of my proudest moments was when a customer told me, ‘I am really impressed. You’ve grown and you made it better for us

These include a project where the local authority requested Build It KwaNobuhle to assist a Magogo who lived in terrible conditions. “Her house has burnt down and she took care of six grandchildren. We immediately got involved together with our suppliers and re-did the roof, walls, windows, electrics, plumbing and with the help of the local authority re-built her house. This was one of the brilliant projects we were involved in.” Build It U/13 soccer league Build It KwaNobuhle is very much involved with U/13 soccer and what is unique to all other Build It branches, is that they have started their own league. Former Bafana Bafana player Pollen “Trompie” Ntlatyana was a guest at a Build It soccer tournament and told Goldberg that “one-day tournaments need to be stopped as they have no long-term influence on the devel-

opment of the sport.” He requested to keep the kids involved in the sport from January up to September when the tournament is being held. Build It KwaNobuhle then started with its own unique Build It U/13 soccer league which now has about 26 teams competing every weekend in the KwaNobuhle, Rosedale and Uitenhage areas. The league culminates in a huge carnival during September when the top six teams come together and do a play-off at Jabavu Stadium. During 2013 Build It KwaNobuhle held a senior soccer tournament with the top four teams playing against one other and offered customers a lucky draw with the prizes being a cow and a sheep. That day about 20 000 people attended the tournament at the Jabavu Stadium. Social investments Build It KwaNobuhle also sponsors and is involved in karate, cricket and boxing tournaments and is very much involved with the HIV/Aids haven at the Share Complex in KwaNobuhle as well as assisting orphanages.

New plumbing & openings section Since Cash Build closed in September 2014, Build It KwaNobuhle has stepped up and filled the gap. They purchased the adjacent old post office and did major building alterations in joining the two properties together. A huge re-launch and opening of the new extended Build It KwaNobuhle was held yesterday. The re-launch will run for a full month and incorporates a competition where customers will enjoy the benefit of reduced prices on certain items for the duration of the month. “We believe that we are leaders in opening markets, namely glass and aluminium doors and windows. Ready-made kitchen units are available that can be customized and fitted to residential properties. Build It has its own cabinet maker who will see that the kitchen unit will be fitted perfectly.” A new venture is that Build It has now started supplying electronic equipment like television sets, microwaves, ovens and stoves and fridges. Build It operates with a state-ofthe-art computer system to source new material and whatever the needs of its customers, Build It will try to the best of their abilities to find the goods. At the new plumbing and openings section there are bathroom displays with certain tile techniques which are unique as well as a variety of doors and windows (wood & aluminium). Win at Build It This will culminate on the 20th June when someone from Build It head-office will do a lucky draw. Every customer buying items worth R500 and more during the period May 20th - June 20th stands the chance of being a winner. The winner will receive a cow with the second and third prizes being a sheep each. In an extended service to the community, Build It has seven delivery vehicles servicing its customers. It also has a representative on the road calling on building sites giving information and advice. Power outages and loadshedding is a mess, but it has no effect on Build It KwaNobuhle as they have installed a huge generator to the benefit of their customers. Build It KwaNobuhle is indeed a constructive business, assisting in building its community through their involvement.

School motorbike and scooter training program HEILIE COMBRINCK In a first of its kind, the PE Classic Bike Racing will, during their Motorcycle Track Day at Aldo Scribante, host a safety talk for high school teenagers who ride their motorcycles or scooters to school. This exciting event will be hosted on Sunday, May 24th and the participating classes include classic and historic motorcycles, breakfast runners and superbikes and the Honda NSF 100 training motorcycles for the 8-14 year-olds who will do demonstration rides at the circuit. “PE Classic Bike Racing has decided to do this safety programme for the school commuters, as there is currently such a high rate of motorcycle accidents happening on a daily basis,” said Lucille Elliott. The teenagers will receive safety tips from the older more experienced riders, and also have three, twenty minute outings on the circuit, where the experienced riders will show them the racing lines, and give them a taste of what it is like to ride their motorcycles in a safe environment. The entry fee for the Track Day is only R50 for the school commuter riders. They will need to bring their own motorcycles to the circuit, have an adult on hand to sign the indemnity form on their behalf, and also produce a valid driver’s licence. They will need to wear long jeans; sneakers or boots; shirt with a jacket, gloves and helmet, for safety reasons. The Track Day cost for adult riders is R200 for the day. Registration will commence at 08:00. There will be an ambulance on duty until the end of the programme. Specatators are welcome free of charge. There will be catering caravans, and a full bar and braai service in the clubhouse, after the event, where all the bikers can get together and watch the UK Round of the Superbike Championship. )Enquiries and entry forms can be obtained from peclassicbikeracing@gmail.com.

Clay target shooting SAs held in U’hage HEILIE COMBRINCK The Clay Target Shooting Association of South Africa’s national championships were held recently on the outskirts of Uitenhage at the Oasis Outdoor Adventure & Clay Target Club. According to Marohessa du Preez, the club was very privileged in having the television crew in attendance and a clip covering the sport and the event was broadcasted on DStv channel 404 last Sunday evening. Clay Target Shooting is a sport that can be enjoyed by all members of a family, from young to old, both male and female.

“If a boy of 9 years, a girl of 13 years, a lady of 40 and a gentleman of 75 years can do it, then so can you! Everyone with a love of the outdoors will enjoy this sport,” said Du Preez. The categories of participation in the nationals included the 5-Stand Discipline and the English Sporting Discipline. All age groups were catered for and each competitor had to shoot at 100 targets during the competition. The local club is proud to have several members who received their provincial as well as national colours. In the 5-Stand competition, club members claiming 1st positions include Clifford Bart-
