Swimming twins off to world games

he Basson twin brothers made the cut after qualifying at the SA National Aquatic Championships in Durban last month. “The selection was a very exciting moment for both of us. Knowing that all your hard work and sacrifices are paying off is an amazing feeling,” said Alard. The siblings who hail from Uitenhage, said that participating against the best in the world would give them the opportunity to benchmark their progress. “I have been training well and I’m eager to see what I can do when I’m up against the best,” said Alaric. He will participate in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events, while Alaric will take part in the breaststroke events. The twins said they were expecting a high performance standard and fast times from their rivals. “Going into the tournament I am aware that it will be challenging but I will learn a lot about racing and international competition,” said Alard. “I am aiming to swim my personal best so I can make myself and my country proud,” added his brother. Although it will be the first time that the 19-year-olds will be competing at the student games, it is not the first time that they will be representing their country. They participated in the Fina World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai in 2013 and last year travelled to Botswana for the Youth African

Safety and security careers open day The Uitenhage Community Policing Forum in conjunction with the local police intend to host an open day highlighting the different careers to choose from in the safety and security sectors. According to Lilly de Jong from the Uitenhage CPF, they want to create the opportunity for interaction between learners or students and the men and women in uniform. According to Ferdi Kilian, administrations manager at Strong Chains Wholesalers, they recently installed a brand new state-of-the-art diaper manufacturing machine. “As part of the installation process, tests

were done before the actual production of diapers commenced. It was decided to manufacture diapers for newborns as a test run,” said Kilian. Therefore the manufacturer has a large stock of diapers for newborns which they want to hand out to mothers of new born babies. Mothers have to submit their identity books as well as the birth certificate of the child. Diapers will be given free of charge to

individuals only and not to organisations. “Without these documents no one will receive a free diaper pack. You must also call personally. Somebody else cannot collect on your behalf. We will hand out one pack per month for three months only and babies older than three months do not qualify.” )Free diapers for newborns can be collected on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 and 12:00 as from today.

Rise in overall cost of mobility affects vehicle sales South Africa’s new vehicle sales continued to decline in May, according to the latest data

from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa). A total of 47 868 new vehicles were sold last month, representing a 3.2% decline, year-onyear. “Over the last few months we’ve seen a rise in the overall cost of mobility. Fuel prices have increased 18% since the start of the year as a result of a weaker rand, and the Reserve

Bank has warned of interest rate hikes in the coming months,” said Rudolf Mahoney, Head of Research at WesBank. “Factors such as these will continue to affect consumer confidence and put household budgets under even more pressure. For many consumers buying a new car may not be a priority in the immediate future.” New vehicle price inflation (VPI) is cur-

rently at 7.6% (TransUnion Auto) and continues to outpace consumer price inflation (CPI), which is currently at 4.5%. This is mainly as a result of the continued weakening of the rand, as well as low consumer and business confidence levels, as indicated by the FNB Bureau of Economic Research (BER) and RMB BER confidence indices. Damage as a result of loadshedding Whom do we hold responsible for loadshedding damage when enough becomes enough? With all due respect, the government should take full responsibility for the inconvenience and costs that we the public are suffering as a result of the regular, current bout of load-shedding. Replacing and repairing of damaged goods becomes a very costly sacrifice, which we the consumers have to bear when our electrical appliances break down, food supplies rot, or when schedules need to be changed. Who pays for these losses such as appliances that become

faulty, food that goes off? Why print schedules when they are not promptly adhered to. We go out of our way to try to accommodate the planning, but are then subjected to switch-off times that do not correspond with the schedules given. Poor people are suffering because they cannot afford back-up to this energy crises. As if to add salt to a wound, it seems that this is not the only area of inconvenience, as water is steadily becoming a concerned issue in many parts of this country. Local darts players to represent EC Several darts players from the region have made the team to represent Despatch and Uitenhage as St Croix Darts Association at the SA National Championships event which will be held in Johannesburg from 4 to 11 July.’In a first since the 1990s, the complete ladies team was selected to represent the Eastern Cape. This is an achievement

which the association is very proud of. A junior player, S. lgoa Toyota Uitenhage received the coveted Toyota Presidents Award as Dealership of the Year in the category for small dealerships, meaning they are the best in their category from all the 193 Toyota dealerships across South Africa. According to Calvin Parry, Dealer Principal at Algoa Toyota Uitenhage, more than half of the Toyota dealerships in the country are categorised as small. This is a result of the brand being popular especially in the countryside. “What makes this award excellent is that you have to score a minimum of 95% when it comes to customer experience. A dealership might have full marks in all the other sections, but if customers are not satisfied, there is no way that you can be a winner,” said

Conrad van Rooyen, Sales Manager at Algoa Toyota. Parry commented that the success of the Uitenhage dealership was based on the commitment of all the staff members. “Each and everyone knows what is expected of them. And they deliver. Together we are winners.” Apart from being the top small Toyota dealership in South Africa, they were also the runners-up in New Vehicle Sales, which included all the categories. Van Rooyen received this award and will be leaving together with his wife on Saturday, to enjoy the rest of the prize which is a week-long treat in Mauritius. The other awards won by Algoa Toyota include being the overall winner of the Lighthouse Dealer Awards for After Sales Highest Proficiency and the Automark Highest Proficiency Award.

Inaugural VW 5km funfilled run The inaugural Volkswagen Fun Run will be held on Saturday and the company’s Managing Director, Thomas Schaefer has already signed up for what promises to be a fun, action-filled event. The 5km fun run follows an interesting route, starting at the VWSA PeoplePavilion, then taking participants
