Nuwe skool wil ‘speel leemtes’ vul

Met ander woorde, speel jou kind nie reg nie, kan hy later sukkel om te leer. “Dié soort spelery,” beklemtoon Dominic Swartz, sentrumbestuurder van Ikhwezi Lomso Early Childhood Centre op Uitenhage, “ is alles noodsaaklike oefening vir die kind se spierontwikkeling wat weer kan meebring dat gewone leerprosesse in die wiele gery word. As ’n kind se kernspiere nie sterk word deur kruip, klim en klouter nie, sukkel ’n kind om regop te sit en om te konsentreer.” ’n Herhalende patroon in die agterstand van 5-jarige kinders – die graad R’s- se ontwikkeling, het Swartz laat besef dat kinder-ontwikkeling vroeër moet geskied. “Kinders kom uit dieselfde areas. So, die probleme bly dieselfde en gaan vir die volgende 10 tot 20 jaar nie verdwyn nie. Basies is dit vir ’n kind met so ’n agterstand te laat om hier te land.” Danksy die Volkswagen Gemeenskapstrust, wat die Ikhwezi Lomso Early Childhood Centre op aanbeveling van Dominic opgerig het, sal hy en sy span nou harde werk daarvan maak om dié “speel-leemtes” by graad R’s te vul. Sy navorsing het getoon dat die Montesorri leerplan die geskikste is. Die plan is goedgekeur en met ingang 2016 sal die Ikhwezi Lomso leersentrum as ’n Montesorri skool funksioneer. Kinders van 3 tot 5-jarige ouderdom sal ingeneem word. Vier onderwysers is aangestel vir 2016 se Montesorri leerplan en begin binnekort met opleiding waar-
na hulle vlak 5 akkreditasie sal ontvang. “Dié leerplan verskil van die formele onderrigmetode en gee kinders die geleentheid om selfgedrewe meer te leer oor dit wat hulle van nature interesseer. Baie aandag word ook gegee aan kinders se spier- en motoriese-ontwikkeling,” verduidelik Swartz. Hy sê die waardevolste ding van Montesorri is die apparate wat in die leerprosesse gebruik word. Kinders voel gewig en vorms, en moet driedimensionele strukture bou om sodoende al spelende van konsepte te leer. “Boomklim is goed vir vingers en fyn motoriese ontwikkeling wat help met skryfwerk sowel as grootspierontwikkeling. Hier is nou nie bome nie, maar ’n klimmuur is ingerig om hiermee te help.” Daar sal vier klasse wees met ’n gemiddeld van 24 kinders per klas tussen die ouderdomme 3-5 jaar. “As ’n 3-jarige kind belangstel om te doen wat 5-jariges binne die curriculum doen, word die kind gehelp om die spesifieke uitkoms te bereik. “Ouers vra oor dissipline met 3-5-jariges in een klas? Ek het nog nie soveel dissipline gesien as juis in hierdie tipe leersisteem nie. Kinders is besig en selfgedrewe met die belangstellings van hul keuse terwyl die onderwyser riglyne bied.” Swartz benadruk dat ’n kind wat uit ’n Montesorri skool kom, op die ouderdom van 6-jaar ’n duidelike begrip het van die desimale-sisteem tot op ’n duisend. Die Montesorri skool op Uitenhage open met ingang van die 2016 skooltermyn. Inskrywings is reeds oop vir 3-5 jarige kinders en vorms is beskikbaar by die skool. The Uitenhage Community Policing Forum in conjunction with the local police intend to host an open day highlighting the different careers to choose from in the safety and security sectors. According to Lilly de Jong from the Uitenhage CPF, they want to create the opportunity for interaction between learners or students and the men and women in uniform. The sectors present include the South African Police Service, Community Policing Forum, Fire Department, Air Force, National Defence Force, ambulance service, traffic department, K9 Dog Unit and the SAPS air wing. “The young ones should understand what the jobs entail and what a privilege it could be to join the forces who put their lives on the line every day and night, so that we all can be assured that you and your loved ones are safe,” said Lilly de Jong. Some of the activities planned for the career open day include: K9 police dog show, fire brigade engines, police helicopter, army drill for children, crime scene: spot the difference, get your fingerprints taken, police on horse back and find the “skollie” treasure hunt. “With this open day we want to give the youth proper guidance, advice, information and exposure regarding the public service providers,” said De Jong. )The career open day will be held at the Uitenhage Aerodrome on Saturday, June 13th from 09:00-15:00. Unified battle against abuse Substance abuse has become a growing phenomenon within the Uitenhage community with its disquieting effects on individuals, families and the community at large. This pandemic has been implicated in disrupting family functioning and social cohesion and is a predictor of a range of social ills. In commemoration of Youth Day and International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) Youth Pioneers and Civic Educators from Ward 48, in conjunction with numerous other stakeholders will be conducting an awareness outreach programme on 15 June within the Gerald Smith community. The programme will take the form of an awareness march that will commence from Middle Street Clinic at 10:00 via Kamesh Road, through the Blikkiesdorp
community to the corner of Abbot Road and Van Rooyen Drive, Gerald Smith, where an awareness programme will be conducted. Community members and participants will be educated with regard to the pandemic of substance abuse through educational talks, testimonies, experiential learning activities and information sessions. Numerous role players in the fight against substance abuse will engage in the programme of the day. Community members are invited to support this venture in fighting the scourge of substance abuse which has been plaguing our community. Kransaasvoëls kry stalletjie op Kirkwood wildsfees
Kate Webster, Oos-Kaapse aasvoël-rehabiliteerder, wat baie nou saam met verskeie aasvoël-rehabilitasiesentrums werk, sal vanjaar op die Absa Kirkwood-wildsfees ’n stalletjie beman vir Vulpro, ’n organisasie wat hulle vir die beskerming van aasvoëls beywer. FOTO: ARGIEF
CARALEE SCHEUN Die Oos-Kaapse kransaasvoël, een van die belangrikste skakels in gesonde veld-ekostelsels, se bestaan word só bedreig dat selfs die Absa Kirkwood-wildsfees groter bewusmaking om dié voël gaan skep. “Een van die fees se beginsels is om die publiek op die hoogte te hou met omgewingsake van belang,” het Jennifer Honsbein, feesdirekteur, gesê. “Gevolglik het ons ’n gratis stalletjie aan Kate Webster, Oos-Kaapse aasvoëlrehabiliteerder, gebied.” Die gevoel is dat die beskerming en bewaring van aasvoëls ’n ewe hoë prioriteit is en
die fees bied die perfekte platform hiervoor,” het Honsbein verduidelik. Webster sal die stalletjie beman namens Vulpro, ’n organisasie wat hom vir die rehabilitering en bewaring van aasvoëls deur middel van deurlopende teelprogramme beywer. Moet egter nie ’n aasvoël in rehabilitasie of selfs ’n opgestopte aasvoël op die fees van 26 tot 28 Junie verwag nie. Webster, wat juis die afgelope Vrydag wéér ’n beseerde kransaasvoël in Lady Grey gaan haal het, het verduidelik dié voël sal net te veel stres met al die mense om hom ervaar. Uitgebreide inligting, toegelig met videos en foto’s, sal wel die volle verhaal vertel, het
sy gou getroos. “Hoewel aasvoëls baie laag op die voedselketting lê, is hul aandeel in die handhawing van gesonde veld-ekostelsels van “onskatbare” waarde. “Die kransaasvoëls se getalle is tans minder as dié van renosters, en elke stap moontlik moet gedoen word om die voël van uitwissing te red.” “Aasvoëls is veral belangrik in verarmde en landelike gemeenskappe, om die veld van diere se karkasse skoon te maak en dus op natuurlike wyse te help om die verspreiding van die siektes wat verlies van vee én menselewens kan veroorsaak, te voorkom,” het Webster gesê. Tydens dié fees hoop Webster om “buitestanders” en veral wildboere se fokus op die behoud van aasvoëls te verskerp. “As boere besef hoe bedreig en belangrik aasvoëls is, sal hulle verstaan hoekom hulp met die bestuur van aasvoëlrestaurante nodig is, én hoekom die gebruik van gif tot die absoluut minimum beperk moet word.” Die maagsap van aasvoëls is volgens Webster só sterk dat enige siektes wat deur ’n karkas ingeneem word, maklik verteer en hanteer word. “Maar nie eens die sterk maagsap kan vergiftiging uitskakel nie.” Nóg ’n probleem waarop Webster die boere se aandag wil vestig, is kragdrade sonder beskermende skedes waar die voëls hulself doodskok. Webster het die afgelope Vrydag juis ’n beseerde kransaasvoël wat in die Lady Grey-omgewing onder ’n onbeskermde kragdraad aangetref is, gaan haal. Sy het ook ’n vermoede dat dié aasvoël vroeer in ’n slagyster getrap het, maar op een of ander wyse losgekom en leer oorleef het met ’n besering aan sy poot.
Jumble sale in aid of UItenhage SPCA The Uitenhage SPCA is hosting an open day with jumble sale on Sunday with the aim to attract the public and facilitate adoptions. “We we will be there between 10:00 and 12:00 and members of the public are urged to consider adopting and thus offering one of the dogs or cats a loving home of their own,” said Christelle Erasmus from the Uitenhage SPCA. Those who do not want to adopt are most welcome to come and browse through all the jumble. By supporting this fundraising effort they will contribute to the financially stricken SPCA. As a 10-year-old boy, Curtis Kettledas started playing the saxophone in the Uitenhage Community Wind Band. Since then his passion for this instrument has evolved and he has featured on various international stages.

His debut album, Hymns Volume 1, has been released and showcases his take on a collection of traditional hymns that he’s played at different churches over the last 12 years. Curtis will launch this album on Sunday at the AFM Church on the corner of Geelhout Ave and Duranta Drive. He last year travelled to Taiwan and spent six months as part of an international six-piece band called Mirage Live Jazz Band whose members hailed from Spain, France, Italy and South Africa. While there, they performed at the Taichung International Jazz Festival. Curtis started playing in churches locally and later performed at different churches nationally. He has gained a lot of experience on stage, being the saxophonist of the local jazz band Company of Prophets and featuring with bands and artists such as the Justin Leigh Band, Patrick Duncan, Feya Faku and Exodus as well as ensembles across South Africa. As part of the Jazz ensembles of NMMU and Nelson Mandela Bay, he opened and shared the stage with various international artists such as Fletch Wiley, Ernie Smith, Jonathan Rubain, Hugh Masekela, George Benson, Gloria Bosman – a few of many. Curtis obtained a BMus Degree from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and spent the last 4 years lecturing music students majoring in the saxophone as well as beginners at NMMU. He also gained international experience in 2014 when he travelled to Taiwan and spent 6 months as part of an international 6-piece band called Mirage Live Jazz Band whose members hailed from Spain, France, Italy and South Africa. Daar word nagenoeg 2 300 koorlede van laer-en hoërskoolkore verwag by die finaal. Slegs vier Oos-Kaap kore is na die finaal uitgenooi. ;The Blenheim House foundation was built so well that five storeys could have been added on it.
HEILIE COMBRINCK Blenheim House, the property at 4 Baird Street formerly known as “No. 1 Uitenhage” this year sees its 200th year of existence as one of the few remaining mansions built during the 1800s. It was originally a single storey house build in 1815 for J.B. Knobel, a land surveyor, and the property extended to John Street. The
foundations of the early houses in Uitenhage were build of river stones embedded in clay. According to architects No. 1 Uitenhage was built so well that five storeys could have been added on the foundation. Blenheim House had many owners and during 1893 Mrs Niven sold it to a then member of parliament, the honourable John Dolley. At that stage the house with its 62cm walls consisted of a hall, large drawing-room, diningroom, pantry and spacious kitchen as well as
seven lofty, well-ventilated bedrooms, verandah and broad stoep. During 1903 the upper-storey was added to the house with a large balcony on three sides of the property. Two gables were erected at the front of the house portraying the dates 1815 and 1903. The house was known for its remarkable woodwork like the hand-carved wooden fireplace which was shipped from Italy, a magnificent teak staircase and teak woodwork on the balcony
The Dolley-descendants continued to live at Blenheim until 1976 after which it was left unoccupied and deteriorated. During 1978 the Le Roux brothers Dawie and Pieter bought it from the heirs to the Dolley Estate. They restored the building back to its unique architectural beauty to house their legal practice. Racing action aplenty at Extreme Festival REPORTER
MOTOR racing enthusiasts are in for a treat
when the 4th round of the Extreme Festival takes to the Aldo Scribante Race Circuit this Saturday. The festival will feature racing in 6 categories, as well as plenty of displays and entertainment off the track. Topping the programme will be the National Production Cars with 16 vehicles burning up the tarmac. Hennie Groenewald (Sasol Audi S4) is currently in the lead with Michael Stephen (Engen Xtreme Audi S4), Gennaro Bonafede (Sasol Audi S4) and Gary Formato (SMD Focus ST) close behind. They will be faced with some competition from Michael van Rooyen (Williams Hunt Chevrolet Cruze), Graeme Nathan (Genuine Parts VW Golf GTI), Simon Moss (Engen Xtreme Audi S4), Shaun Duminy (SMD Focus ST) and Charl Smalberger (Sabertek Golf GTI). In Class X for privateers Freek Blignaut Senior and Junior with their Mazda MP5s will be heading up the entries.
Also competing in this class will be George Smalberger (VW Golf GTI), BMW 3 drivers Junaid Slamang, Niyaas Modack and Achmat Achmat and Greg Moloney in the Mini Cooper S. In the Engen VW Cup races defending champion Sheldon van der Linde (Champion Polo) will be the man to beat with his closest rivals being Tasmin Pepper (PG Glass Polo), Matthew Hodges (Makopano Polo), Shaun la Reservee (Alpine Motors Polo), Juan Gerber (Haupt Polo), Trevor Bland (PG Glass Polo), Daniel Rowe (Champion Polo) and Lyle Ramsay (Monroe Polo). Van der Linde has claimed four victories from the first five heats and leads the title chase by eleven points. The Red Square Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup will produce some close racing at Scribante with Graeme van Breda (Reef Supplies ZX10R) rated as the one to take victory. He is sure to be challenged by Pieter de Vos (Jongingozi ZX10R), Kyle Robinson (Techgroup ZX10R), Johan le Roux (Avidan ZX10R), Rodney Machlachlan (Count Air ZX10R) and Raymond Keel (BTS Electrical ZX10R).
