The project is based along the lines of the renowned and awarded JBay Recycling Project which is co-ordinated by Tanja Lategan and in turn was schooled on the idea of the Swap Shop in Hermanus, established by Marilyn van der Velde. “Children are encouraged to collect, sort and deliver recyclable materials to a central point where they are weighed and exchanged for points. They then can swop the points in an on-site shop for toiletries, food, clothing,

ried out to the meter for seven years despite the fault being reported. He also said that Jordaan paid the bill in full on Friday, but declined to mention the amount. Amat’s project manager, Mthu Ntlangani, said they had mostly identified the problem of unpaid billing in the Uitenhage area. “The Metro is well aware of these cases and measures are being put in place in line with the current contract of Amat,” said Ntlangani. Ntlangeni said there were several issues related to billing that Amat encountered during the first phase of the project ranging from budget constraints within the Metro, to customers in Uitenhage who were not billed owing to temporary supply. “Our field teams, in most cases, had to stop disconnections owing to unavailability of replacement meters. In Uitenhage many of the customers are not billed as they have a temporary supply and have legal bypasses from the Metro, so the issue is not new to the Metro as Amat has been raising this issue with the Executive Director of Electricity and Energy for some time now,” he said. This comes after reports that Mayor Danny Jordaan had not been billed for his electricity for 7 years as his meter was left unfixed. According to Williams, Jordaan reported a problem with the meter.

“They were paying by debit order for a while because they weren’t living here. When they realised there was a problem, they informed the municipality, and someone was sent to the house but did not fix the meter for some reason. The problem was reported a few more times. We are currently investigating why it was never fixed. When the family moved back, they informed us again. The meter is now in working order,” said Williams “We calculated the family’s debt for the seven years’ worth of bills, and it was paid in full on Friday,” Williams added. Ntlangeni said Amat was busy finalising the second phase of the project which would address most of those issues, as they had been identified by their field teams. He said in their first year their report showed a recovery of 53GWh, which Amat has managed to save for the Metro. “Amat is busy with the implementation of the second phase of the project which will see the Metro making some serious improvements on its revenue base.” Ntlangeni said they were busy with a second phase focus where tariff investigation would be conducted to ensure that the tariff was properly aligned to the Eskom tariff. Large Power Users who constitute 60% of the total energy consumed by the Metro will be scrutinized.

Ten injured in bakkie accident Ten workers were injured after a bakkie left the roadway and plunged down an embankment along Algoa Road in Uitenhage on Monday morning at around 08:26. A report from the scene indicates that the vehicle veered off the road and came to rest about 150 metres into the bush after ejecting the occupants. Exact details of the cause of the accident, however, will remain a subject for police comment. According to Chris Botha, Netcare 911 Media Liaison Officer, paramedics arrived at the scene and after triaging found that one person had sustained critical injuries, five were in a serious condition

After they were immobilised medics had to carry them up to the roadway. The critically injured patient was airlifted to hospital while the other patients were transported by ambulance to various hospitals for the care that they required. According to Sergeant Majola Nkohli from the police, the 26-year-old driver apparently fainted behind the steering wheel and thus lost control of the vehicle.

His message to the girls was not only inspirational but also powerful as he spoke about their beloved teacher Jayde Panayiotou who was murdered recently. “And as you carry with you the memory of this beautiful heart, your teacher, Jayde, I want you to grieve as you have and should, but I also want you to look over the rainbow and see the future,” said Prof Jansen. “Also remember you are better than us. Get a degree but also get decency. Get an education, but also as is said in the beautiful Afrikaans word ‘’n opvoeding’ which is more than an education – it is becoming human.”

Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek College, said, “It was good for our girls and staff to have a chance to laugh after the tragic times that befell us. “Although it was exam time, we were absolutely thrilled when we were contacted about Prof. Jansen wanting to pay us a visit. We felt honoured that he had heard of our sadness at the school and of our achievements. “We are thankful to Prof. Jansen for sharing himself so fully with us in an amazing, inspirational and uplifting speech.” To hear him play on the piano was an added bonus! Prof. Jansen also visited the Consumer Studies room and tasted the matric practical eats (cup cakes and pumpkin fritters) and enjoyed tea on the verandah with the principal Marilyn Woods and staff members.
