Sunny skies over Wildsfees fun REPORTER Sunny skies are forecast for the 2015 Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees weekend packed with entertainment and things to do for the wild at heart family and music lovers. “The tents and marquees are all up, the electricity is connected, we have generators on stand-by, the biggest stage in the Eastern Cape is ready, and the activity on the social media is reaching fever-pitch. “Everything is on track for the best Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees ever,” says festival director Jenni Honsbein. The festival takes place this weekend from Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28. Designed to cater for the whole family and all ages, this year parents will be able to let their children have fun in a supervised play and adventure area. “Kids will be treated like kings at the annu-

al Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees when, for the first time at a festival in the Eastern Cape there will be a dedicated festival within a festival for children,” says Honsbein. A highlight will be a journey through the first purpose-built Faerie Garden in the Eastern Cape. Entry will be through a giant hollow tree, which opens into a magical village filled with faeries, adventures, a froggie pond, lily leaf steps, trees, an enchanted bridge and more. The Faerie Village and Trail will be open from nine in the morning until nine at night. Entrance is free and available only to children under the age of 12. For the older siblings there are adventure rides during the day and an array of the country’s top performers on Friday and Saturday night. Other attractions over the weekend include presentations in Die Burger Praat Saam Perseel, browsing through over 350 specialist

stalls, an anti-rhino poaching demonstration by the Addo Elephant National Park honorary park rangers, Boerboels, the Eastern Cape’s only new vehicle expo, an agriculture expo, and mohair expo. There will also be High Tea with Hannes and Emsie, Rocco de Villiers with Een Hart, Een Klavier and Johan Engelbrecht with Die Hart is maar net ‘n pomp in the Absa Show Hall. Stars to be seen on the giant Windhoek on Friday night include Wicus van der Merwe, the Radio Kalahari Orkes, Jay and Lianie May and Snotkop. Facebook followers were given a chance to help the Wildsfees team to select the Saturday line-up. “We had great feedback. The festival is clearly close to the heart of a large number of people from the Eastern Cape and beyond,” says festival director Jenni Honsbein. Desmond Wells, Izak Davel and Nicholis Louw will be performing at the festival for the

first time on Saturday, June 27. Favourites Ray Dylan, Elizma Theron, Kurt Darren and Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels are back by popular demand. The whole family will be entertained and treated at the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees on Sunday. Festival goers can look forward to a line-up filled with local South African artists against the backdrop of the Rietberg Mountains and the aromas of fresh coffee, braai fires and koeksisters. Tribute to a friend and supporter of community REPORTER The late Hemantkumar Gajjar, a former well known Uitenhage businessman who was associated with Orient Bazaar, was always prepared to make donations to the Uitenhage Lions Club in support of the disadvantaged in the community. “With his recent passing away he requested us, as his family, to continue with his legacy of relieving suffering in the community,” said Rikesh Gajjar, one of his sons. His family honoured their father’s wish and together with The Ministry donated meals to over 200 disadvantaged members of the community. In addition the Gajjars also ensured that the Uitenhage SPCA benefits by donating 300kg of food to the association. “His memory will live on, which was the same as his own father. Both believed that a recipe for happiness is to reach out to others rather than expect to be reached out to,” said Lion President André van Niekerk.

Holiday winter school for learners REPORTER Close to 900 Grade 11 and 12 learners will be exposed to the fascinating worlds of accounting, science and engineering over the June/ July school holidays at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Science Discovery Week

The Science Discovery Week – that will be attended by 300 learners from 56 schools in the Eastern Cape - promises to open the eyes of Grade 11 and 12 learners to the intriguing fields of Science in a fun and informal setting. Daily activities will include visits to various Science Faculty departments where learners will participate in subject-specific experiments.

These e-mails and messages also contain a contact number and person whom you should call, as you are promised you could win large sums of money. The police urge the public to protect themselves against scams.

Tablers to brave the cold ... ;On the night of Friday, July 3rd Round Tablers will be dressed in their T-shirts and shorts around a fire on the open parking space next to Engen Penford in Graaff Reinet Road, Uitenhage. This will be part of their Winter Knights project to collect clothes and blankets. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

With the colder weather making us reach for our blankets and warm clothing, the Winter Knights of the Round Table are calling the public to join them in the fight against the cold and to help them spread warmth to those less fortunate. “This is the 12th year that the Winter Knights campaign will run again. Winter Knights is a hands-on project where we as Round Table collect blankets, old clothes and tinned food from the community. These collections are re-distributed to various charities who are in need of the above,” said Jacques le Roux, Chairman of Round Table 14 Uitenhage. The success of this campaign lies in the passion of the Winter Knights who serve their community by putting their hearts and souls into it. On the night the Round Tablers will be dressed in their T-shirts and shorts around a fire. “The reason behind this is that we show people and experience ourselves the cold dreary nights which a massive part of our community goes through every night of winter.

“We request the community to donate blankets, old clothes and tinned food to assist us in our project,” said Le Roux. The Round Tablers have arranged with Pick n Pay Penford in Uitenhage and Superspar Despatch as collection points where the community can drop off donations of blankets, clothes and tinned food. Round Table will then collect the donations from these stores. The community is also welcome either to drop-off the donations on the night of the project or can contact either Jacques le Roux on 083 458 7081 or Kevin Smith on 084 411 9465 to arrange with them to collect any donations. Superspar Despatch has jumped in to help with the Winter Knights Project and they will be out in their parking area in front of the store this coming Friday, 26 June from 20:00 to collect clothing on behalf of Round Table. )This year Winter Knights will be held on the open

) “You can do without gas, you can do without electricity but you cannot do without water. It’s the stuff of life.” Back on the road, the turbocharged all-new 1798cc Polo GTi, which Volkswagen for the first time offered with electronically adjustable dampers, is favoured for its “Sport” select suspension to enjoy the engine to its full capacity. This option however, is as life-threatening on the gravel road as fracking is to the Karoo. Thankfully the new Polo GTi’s handling was refined and the electronic stability system offers a smooth and stable ride. This contributes in the new Parabolicca 17 inch alloy wheels staying on the track. In his farmstead, Douglas explains that the Karoo basin is thickly laced with dolerite, a magmatic rock with a pinkish colour when viewed on satellite photos. Cracks in these dolerite formations allow underground water to seep to the surface, forming fountains which provide the Karoo with its liquid gold: water. “Groundwater collects around dolerite pipes. If you are look-

rom the sky it must have looked like a giant dust snake crawling along gravel roads near Graaff Reinet, winding through valleys and past the mountains of the Karoo. That’s what you get when the revitalised Polo GTi pumps adrenaline with its 141kW engine, heading on the Dassiesfontein road towards the farm Rietpoort close to NieuBethesda. It’s not just a test drive (what a pleasure!), it’s also to meet Rietpoort’s Douglas Stern, a well-known voice against the fracking of the Karoo. The new well packaged hot hatch Polo, powered by a 1.8 litre TSI engine (its predecessor had a 1.4 litre TSI 132kW engine) and 7-speed DSG transmission, hums its way so effortlessly, that the novice might think the Karoo boasts tarred roads. The Polo GTi manual 6-speed transmission version will soon be

available in South Africa. Sliding open the sun roof one smells the crisp early morning Karoo air, indigenous plants like the kapokbos (wild rosemary) and katbos (wild asparagus), interspersed with smell of sheep and cattle manure. The aromas, the majestic mountains and the vast plains of this arid part of South Africa, begs the question why shale gas should be fracked here of all places where underground water reserves are the essence of life. Thanks to the heated leather seats the crisp Karoo air is neutralised. But the hot seat in which dynamic anti-fracking farmer Douglas Stern places the government and oil companies, remains. He is well-known for his fearless comments on fracking: ) “We don’t know who is running the country, the government or the gas and oil companies.” ) “Reclamation is not restoration, we must protect what we have”
