Two VW hijackers busted in KwaNobuhle The quick response of two police officials from KwaNobuhle resulted in the arresting of two armed men who on Sunday night tried to hijack a VW Polo in Mabandla Road. “WO Jacobus Wyatt and Const. Wayne Menezes were busy with routine patrols when the call for assistance was received regarding two armed suspects attempting to hijack a vehicle in KwaNobuhle,” said police spokesperson WO Gerda Swart. “ The members gave chase and apprehended the two men. They seized an unlicensed 9mm firearm and rounds from the magazine.

“The suspects, aged 32 and 56-years-old were arrested on charges ranging from attempted hijacking to the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.” The suspects yesterday appeared in the KwaNobuhle Magistrates Court. Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Phillip Salukazana praised the two police members for the excellent work that they have done. “We applaud their efforts and we shall continue to safeguard our communities and rid our streets of illegal firearms and criminals,” said Brig Salukazana.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) became known to most South Africans after Springbok legend Joost van der Westhuizen was diagnosed with the illness during 2011. MND is a severe disorder that attacks the brain and spinal cord, destroying motor neurons, which are the nerve cells that control muscles used for essential activities such as walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing. The Uitenhage Lions Club has started with various MND fundraising projects in support of local people diagnosed with the disease. A Lions steak evening was held at the Despatch Rugby Club where a total of R9 520 was raised.

It was handed over to the Friends of Motor Neuron Disease (MND) by Lion Freddie Erasmus. Lion President André van Niekerk thanked members of the community as well as local businesses for their support. “Your support will contribute to making a world of difference in the lives of those in our immediate communities, affected by MND, as well as their families,” said Van Niekerk. According to Lion Barend Erasmus, the huge success of the MND fundraiser will include future events in support of the Friends of MND. This is to provide in the necessary services for those in need.

College to ‘Bleed for Madiba’ Eastcape Midlands College is literally ‘bleeding’ as part of Mandela Month and at the same time, displaying one of their core values which is ‘respecting community value’. Excellence runs in their veins and during July 2015, they will encourage staff members, students and members of the public to donate blood. The South African National Blood Service, SANBS, celebrates July as Mandela Month and encourages the public to use part of their 67 minutes towards donating blood. Blood saves lives and ultimately creates new futures for those on the receiving end. With a positive population growth and improved healthcare services, the demand for blood is constantly increasing. SANBS aims to collect 815 509 units of blood in 2015 and this can only be achieved with the on-going support from institutions such as Eastcape Midlands College. No health system can function efficiently without a stable supply of safe blood. It is nothing short of a miracle that vital aspects of healthcare are in the hands of ordinary blood donors who selflessly donate their blood to improve the lives of complete strangers. A person can donate blood every 56 days and a single unit of blood can be separated into three different components that can help

Consumers need to secure their own energy future and play a more proactive role in managing power shortage. That was the word from Nelson Mandela Bay Chamber of Business Renewable Energy Task team member, Gareth Burley at the launch of the Power On Exhibition. The Power On Expo at the Walmer Park Shopping Centre underground parkade on 8 and 9 August, will expose to the public more than 100 different power solutions and appliances, from a flash light to an off the grid solution. Burley said that all consumers of electricity had to be part of the solution by implementing energy saving measures, given the rising costs and long term duration of loadshedding in South Africa. “Why is it that every time the power goes off most consumers express horror? As if we didn’t know loadshedding is a long term reality we face in South Africa.” “Energy consumers need to start generating their own power,’’ Burley said. Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Kevin Hustler said the member companies of the Chamber in the Metro who employ approximately 60 000 people is deeply concerned about the effect the high cost of electricity has on the continued viability of their businesses, and the threat to employment in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Electricity prices have increased fourfold (quadrupled)

in Nelson Mandela Bay since 2008. The effect of such increases on the economy has been devastating in terms of employment and de-industrialisation. Collectively five companies in the manufacturing sector had already shed 950 jobs between 2010 and 2012 in the city because of the high cost of electricity. Inwoners van Despatch is sedert Saterdag met droë krane gelaat. Maandag het inwoners plek-plek op die dorp by waterpunte saamgedrom om drinkwater by vyf munisipale tenkwaens te tap. JP Labuschagne het saam met mede-inwoners in ’n lang ry gewag om sy twee 40 literwaterkanne vol te maak. “Ons water het Sondag opgehou loop. Ons het water gekoop om te drink en geglo die probleem sal vinnig opgelos word. Maar vanoggend (Maandag) was die krane steeds droog.” Aubrey Delport, ’n inwoner van Tulbaghstraat, sê hy het Saterdagmiddag laas uit sy krane water gekry. “Dit is nou al die tweede naweek dat ek sonder water sit. Gaan dit nou ’n gereelde probleem raak?” wou Delport, besig om sy waterkan te vul, weet. “Wat my kwaad maak, is die lek by die munisipale reservoir in my straat. Sedert verlede jaar November loop die water in die straat af. Die munisipaliteit het nou nog nie dié lek herstel nie – hy gaan seker net so sloer met dié waterpyp!”

Volgens Marthie Nel, waarnemende direkteur van die Nelson Mandela Metropool se kommunikasiekantoor, is Despatch droog weens ’n hoofwatertoevoerpyp wat deur kontrakteurs beskadig is terwyl hulle met konstruksiewerk in Khayamnandi besig was. “Die beskadigde waterpyp het veroorsaak dat een van ons reservoirs heeltemal leeggeloop het. ’n Tegniese span en kontrakteur is reeds besig met herstelwerk aan die pyp.” Tot dié werk afgehandel is, kan inwoners tot 23:00 vanaand hul water by die vyf tenkwaens in die dorp gaan haal, het Nel bygevoeg. Despatch loop die afgelope paar jaar erg deur onder watertoevoerprobleme, het raadslid Francois Greyling benadruk. “Gewone waterlekke en/of gebarste pype veroorsaak ook mega-waterverliese op ’n daaglikse basis.” Hy skryf die situasie toe aan die munisipaliteit se onvermoë om kritieke vakante poste in die loodgieter-afdeling te vul. Nog ’n lang doring in die watervlees is die outomatiese waterkleppe van die reservoirs in Khayamnandi wat buite werking is en met die hand oop- en toegedraai moet word, het Greyling bygevoeg. “Maar nou is daar personeeltekorte, so die oop- en toedraai geskied

nie soos dit moet nie, gevolglik loop daar nóg water weg.” Greyling het presies rekord gehou van hoeveel keer Despatch se krane die afgelope vier jaar droog was. Hy het al vroeër dié data aan die uitvoerende direkteur van infrastruktuur en ingenieurswerke gestuur. “Daar is geen plaaslike munisipale loodgieterspan op die dorp om waterprobleme so gou as moontlik op te los nie. Hoekom word dit nie aan plaaslike loodgieters, wat onmiddellik kan reageer, uitgekontrakteer nie?” wou Greyling weet.

Vier spanne het kragte gemeet in die uitkloptoernooi en die Dream Team was die uiteindelike wenners. Warriors se professionele krieketspelers Baxier Walters en Sisanda Magala het die toernooi bygewoon. Hulle het spelers gemotiveer en leiding gegee waar nodig. Plenty of highlights at VW Rally The Volkswagen Rally 2015 will see the National Rally Championship competitors in action in Uitenhage and surrounds on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18. There are 12 planned stages of competition ready to challenge the teams as they aim to set the fastest times to claim victory. While the rally starts on Friday, the buildup to the event will allow rally fans to get involved. Thursday evening the scrutineering checks will take place at Tavcor Volkswagen on the William Moffett Expressway. The public will be able to attend the event, see the various rally cars at their best, meet the drivers and navigators, get some posters signed and take photos with the cars and teams. “The scrutineering process is part of the rally but has not really been considered an event for the public,” says Joe Fourie, route organiser of the Volkswagen Rally. “This year that changes and it promises to be a fun and festive highlight which will get everyone in the mood for the action to come.” On Friday the rally start will see the gathering of teams at the Auto Pavilion in Uitenhage where the public can enter Volkswagen’s Place of Legends and Car at no charge and also meet the teams and see the cars in the run-up to the midday start. “The final stage on Friday at Aldo Scribante Raceway is sure to be another highlight of the rally,” says Fourie. “This will be a tough stage, a combination of tar and gravel which will test the competitors – whilst also providing excellent spectating opportunities close to PE.” Saturday will see three spectating opportunities at Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway (PEOTR) ensuring that rally fans get the most action while doing the least driving distance possible. “The Mission Road stage can be viewed from PEOTR as well as both final stages for the event,” says Fourie. “The last two stages of the event are super special stages which means spectators can see two rally cars tackle the stage simultaneously to add another di-

mension of excitement to the event.” These are just some of the highlights motorsport fans can expect at Volkswagen Rally 2015, with intense competition expected at round five of the national rally championship season. “As sponsors we have worked closely with the Volkswagen Rally organisers to ensure this event is easily accessible to the general public – not just hardcore fans, but for anyone who enjoys action and cars,” says Mike Rowe, Volkswagen’s Motorsport Manager.
