hulle uitvind dat die leidrade maklik gevolg kon word en vir baie lag en avontuur gesorg het. “Die spanne was beïndruk met die uitdagings en geringe veranderinge is voorgestel. “Ons weet nou dat deelnemers kan uitsien na ‘n middag vol opwinding,” het die organiseerders gesê. Goeie pryse is op die spel en families, vriende, bure en kollegas word uitgedaag om in te skryf. Spanne bestaan uit 4 deelnemers en elke span moet ’n unieke naam hê. which is now causing human rights violations with respect to the right to basic sanitation and water. “Regular strike action by the directorate and the municipality’s lack of political will to end the illegal practices is now getting out of hand. “The past weeks the residents and ratepayers of Despatch have been plagued by water interruptions and burst pipes as well as dry taps for days on end owing to the municipality’s inability to address the issue they have faced for more than four years,” said Greyling According to him, most of the regular interruptions are totally avoidable and are due to

lack of skilled personnel and overworked and overburdened plumbers. “The major contributor is also the lack of automated shut valves at the reservoirs. This then results in pipes bursting and dry taps in usually the same high lying areas like Heuwelkruin, Reservoir Hills, Daleview and Khayamnandi. He is leading the demand for the municipality to appoint private contractors. As part of his demand Greyling compiled a list which he stipulated what is needed, according to him, to end the ongoing water supply shortage. Here are some of the demands included in the document:

•Contractors should have all the skills needed to resolve the on-going water supply problem. They should have all the equipment, personnel and parts to repair the supply line and fix the backlog of leaks to prevent further losses •That all critical vacancies in the municipal directorate be filled immediately •That Despatch and Uitenhage municipal stores be stocked with general supply items. “Failing to adhere to the demands of the residents within reasonable time for their basic human right of access to water will be met with the relevant escalation to the Human Rights Council of SA,” said Greyling.

Help relieve blood shortage

Blood donation is one of the simplest ways to make a difference to the lives of others and it is something you can continue to do every 56 days.

Currently the South African National Blood Service is experiencing a critical blood shortage with only 1.5 days blood stock nationally.

In support of upcoming Nelson Mandela Day, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing to all South Africans to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy and give the gift of life – blood. On Saturday Mandela Day will be celebrated. It is a day during which citizens, across the globe, are called on to give 67 minutes of their time to make a difference in the communities in which they live. A special blood drive will be taking place at Bay West Mall from 09:00 - 14:00 in association with the Igazi Foundation’s Marrow Masakhane. “We are encouraging people to spend a portion of their 67 minutes by donating blood and hopefully, we can reach our aim of collecting 67 units of blood on Mandela Day,” said Nina

‘When dreams are real even for one day’ The request by the Uitenhage Lions Club to the local community and Businesses for donations of winter blankets and clothing can only be described as “a recipe for happiness”. This is according to project convener, Lion Claude Smith who together with his good lady Melissa convened the project on behalf of the Lions. “The donations received from both individuals and local businesses made it possible to keep many of the homeless and street children warm during the bitter cold of winter,” said Lion President André van Niekerk. “We wish to convey a massive thank you for the community’s support as the donations received really bring warmth to those in need.” The Ministry and the Uitenhage Lions Club handed the donations of winter blankets and jerseys out to the homeless and street children at John Street, Uitenhage. Hometown rally challenge for VW racing team REPORTER THE challenge for the Volkswagen Sasolracing team this weekend starts in its hometown, Uitenhage! “The opportunity to rally in your own back yard is always welcome. Also to provide the thrill and excitement of national rally competition to your biggest fans and most loyal supporters,” says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “Every year the Volkswagen Rally proves to be a particularly demanding round of the national calendar and we are expecting nothing less this year.” Round five of the 2015 National Rally Championship season is the Volkswagen Rally and this year it is the start of the second half of the eight-round calendar. Local rally fans will be able to see racing teams tackle the 12 stages, starting in Uitenhage from AutoPavilion at Volkswagen SA on Friday. Gugu Zulu and Hilton Auffray will be looking to the Volkswagen Rally to continue their performance. Zulu has produced three consecutive top-five finishes, two of which were podium results. Auffray has been at Zulu’s side for two of these three events and the pair is intent on building up an impressive season result together.

They are certainly on track to achieve this, with Zulu in third place overall in the championship as he heads to round five of the national championship, the Volkswagen Rally. Henk Lategan and Barry White enter the VW Rally looking to consolidate their fifth place position in the national championship – with an eye on a podium result in front of the team’s hometown fans. Lategan and White have shown the pace required to finish at the head of the field and will be aiming for exactly that result at the Volkswagen Rally. Previous Volkswagen Rally winners Hergen Fekken and Pierre Arries would like nothing better than to claim the top step on the podium of their home event again. The Volkswagen Rally is their third outing together this season and it is simply a matter of time before they return to their accustomed place in the national championship. Biathlon train race from PE to U’hage REPORTER

xcitement is rising ahead of next month’s Nelson Mandela Bay train race, a unique biathlon style team relay race comprising corporate, club, social and schools teams against a Metrorail train between the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage stations. This is the only event in the city which combines the three major towns of Nelson Mandela Bay and connected communities. Over 200 teams (consisting of 6 each) will be expected to challenge the train over the 38km distance on Sunday, August 2nd with late entries closing on Wednesday 29th July. The race, comprising 6 stages, starts at 09:00 from the Port Elizabeth station. The first stage is a flat 5km road run stretch

from the PE station to the Caltex Eastern Cape sponsored transition opposite Sydenham Station. The team baton is then handed over to the 2nd team member who will run through to the Dynamic Express Services transition point opposite New Brighton in Deal Party just 3.5km away. Stage 3 will take the teams along a 4km run to the hand-over point to their MTB cyclist along the river bank in Swartkops. Cyclists will have a fast and flat 10km stretch from Swartkops to the SPAR Eastern Cape sponsored transition at Perseverance. Cyclists will cycle alongside the railway line and through the picturesque village of Redhouse. The cyclist hands over to the 5th team member for a 5.5km mix of trail running and road running through Azalea Park and into Despatch.

The final team transition will be alongside the Despatch Station where the final team member will embark on the final 8km stretch through Despatch and Uitenhage to finish at the Uitenhage Station. The Metrorail train which the teams will be racing against will be carrying around 700 cheering spectators, sponsors representatives and charities that will enjoy an improved race route this year. The train leaves PE station with the runners at 09:00 and will have a stop-over break at Redhouse station where refreshments and breakfast is made available by the Redhouse Benevolent Society and the Zwartkops Rowing Club. Tickets for the train are selling quickly and pre-ordering of food and refreshments at Redhouse is highly recommended through the

Tough terrain enjoyed by offroad racers The Eastern Cape Offroad Club recently hosted its 4th round of the championship in the Kareedouw area. The competitor turnout was good as was the number of spectators who came to watch the cars in action. The route offered a good variety of tough terrain which included two deep trenches where drivers had to negotiate.
