Be on alert when drawing money at ATM

REPORTER

The South African Police Service wish to warn the community to be on the alert and careful when withdrawing cash at local ATMs at shopping centres or in town. “Incidents were reported where cards were stolen from rightful owners and cash withdrawals were made without the owners knowing about it,” said W/O Gerda Swart, spokesperson of the Uitenhage police. The police therefore provide as a guideline the following safety hints regarding ATMs: *Avoid isolated ATMs and using the ATM late at night or very early in the morning. Try to select an ATM in well-lit,

busy areas. *If you feel unsafe at an ATM or you are suspicious of individuals loitering in the vicinity of the ATM, trust your instincts, go away and use another ATM. *Never write down your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or carry it anywhere near your ATM card. Memorise it and keep it a secret. *Never accept help from strangers when using an ATM. *Take your time while doing your transaction. Don’t be distracted, intimidated, or hurried into your transaction. *Never let a stranger touch your card. He/ she may have already seen your PIN and is trying to switch your card.

*It is advisable not to insert your card until instructed to do so by the display screen. *Never force your card into the card slot. *Be sure no-one is looking over your shoulder when you key in your PIN. *Cancel your card if the machine retains it by calling the card stop number. *Be suspicious of anyone offering his or her help. Don’t move away from the machine before you have called the card stop number and make a note of the reference provided by the bank. *Ensure that your own card is returned after the transaction. *Don’t count your cash in front of the ATM or while walking or sitting in an unlocked vehicle as you may be followed from an ATM. *Be watchful for people (on foot or in a vehicle) following you after you have withdrawn your money. *If you suspect that you are being followed, get yourself to the nearest police station.

ICAM DIGITAL RED LIGHT AND SPEED VIOLATION CAMERAS

Watch out for new traffic cameras on the road

REY boxes with a little window that have in recent weeks been spotted alongside major roads in Nelson Mandela Bay have given rise to much speculation on social media on whether or not these are new traffic cameras. In addition, these cameras, thought to be new permanent ones, have been disappearing as quickly as they appeared. After numerous fruitless inquiries to the municipality about the mysterious boxes, with even the director of traffic and licensing services, Hamilton Totoyi, saying that no new traffic cameras are being installed, the DA councillor for safety, Gustav Rautenbach, established that the boxes are in fact new Icam traffic cameras, which are not only smart cameras but are mobile as well.

The Icams were spotted along the William Moffett Expressway, Uitenhage Road and Settlers Freeway last week. According to Rautenbach, the municipality appointed a new service provider in January for the supply, installation and maintenance of the Icam digital red light and speed violation cameras. The contract includes the upgrading of the permanent cameras which were used during the previous service provider’s contract period, which ended in December last year. According to the website of Traffic Management Technologies, the new service provider, the portable Icam, which the company designed and weighs 2 kg, has multipurpose roles. With Graaff-Reinet being an important district in the Cape Colony the road leading towards this Karoo town inevitably was named Graaff-Reinet Road, as it still is named some 211 years later. The prosperity of Uitenhage was based upon producing fresh produce and the big boom came with the wool washeries alongside the banks of the Zwartkops River. The latter made Uitenhage become internationally known for its wool industry, as it still is to this day. Surnames of influential individuals involved in this industry are still visible in town as street names like Gubb, Inggs and Niven. Graaff-Reinet Road leads to the heart of town and parts of it were built alongside the water furrow which channelled water from the Springs on the outskirts of town. Gangsterism erodes communities Recent news reports have shown the increase in gang related violence within local Nelson Mandela Bay communities. The current surge of gangsterism in especially the northern areas has reached epidemic proportions and in an effort to curb the rise in gang violence, Port Elizabeth Mental Health will share valuable information through a seminar.

A panel of expert speakers will participate in order to share insights and expertise in gang violence, including the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority, a psychologist, a social worker, a mother impacted by gang violence as well as reformed ex-gangsters from the Endangered Species Project. “Our seminar aims to create an improved

cabulary of many South Africans. MANDELA DAY - JULY 18TH

All the ‘67 minutes’ at Oosterland Various businesses on Mandela Day devoted their 67 minutes to Oosterland Youth Centre at Despatch. Since 1980 the Centre has accommodated a maximum of 120 children who are placed in care of the Centre by the Children’s Court. This includes children in need of care, orphaned children, abused and neglected children. Oosterland is serving mainly the children from the Eastern Cape, irrespective of race, culture, gender, linguistic or religious heritage. Most of the children are from Despatch, Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth and with some as far as Cape Town and Pretoria. The Centre has to submit a two year plan for each child to the Department of Welfare to specify which services would be rendered to facilitate family re-unification. Oosterland Youth Centre wishes to thank all who have spent their 67 minutes at the centre.

Children treated with nice hot shower on Mandela Day Ubuntu Community Development Solutions hosted one of its Child Clean-up projects on Mandela Day. “We served 37 children with a hot water shower, new clothes and food. It being school holidays and with various other projects being held on the day, many children did not come into town. The weather was also cold and rainy, which kept many indoors or hidden away,” said Angelique Nell from Ubuntu Community Development Solutions. The project was blessed with various donations from the community as well as local businesses. SASBO The Finance Union donated R12 500 worth of kitchen equipment and clothing to the project. First National Bank staff brought bags of groceries and clothing for the children and Woolworths Uitenhage also brought many sets of clothes to children of various ages. “We would like to thank the staff of these institutions for their time and donations to this project. It has assisted them tremendously,” said Nell.

PHOTO:SUPPLIED David Viljoen has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and relies on a motorized wheelchair called “Turbo” to get around. He recently had the misfortune that the gear bearings of Turbo had worn and needed to be replaced. “As an MND sufferer David donates his time to supporting causes which creates awareness about MND. The Uitenhage Lions Club shares these key values,” said Lion President Andre van Niekerk. The Lions Club managed to obtain spare gear bearings which were donated to David. He will now be able to continue with educating and assisting the community with Turbo being back on the road again. David was appointed as Ambassador of the “We MiND Foundation” and is also associated with Friends of MND. Both of the above are non-profit organisations (NPO) that are committed to supporting and developing awareness regarding MND in communities including Uitenhage and Despatch.

Despatch netbal wen Kaapse toernooi Hoërskool Despatch se eerste netbalspan het die afgelope skoolvakansie na Kaapstad getoer om aan die Hoërskool Swartland se Winter Sporttoernooi deel te neem. Hulle was onoorwonne en is as die kampioene van die toernooi gekroon. Die span se uitslae tydens die toernooi is as volg (Despatch punte eerste genoem): HS Swartland (2de span) 22-9; HS Lutzville 17-10; HS Brackenfell 18-10; Drostdy 18-10; Cradock 12-8; Charlie Hofmeyer 13-12.

In die kwarteindrondte het Despatch hulle mede Oos-Kapenaars, Volkskool van GraaffReinet, met 18-8 geklop. In die semi-finaal het hulle afgereken met Tygerberg en die eindtelling was 18-13. In die finaal het Despatch te staan gekom teen die uiters kompeterende Hoërskool Brackenfell. Teen halftyd was Despatch agter met 5 doele, maar in die tweede helfte het die Oos-Kaapse netbalspelers hulle opponente ingehaal en uiteindelik met 17-14 geklop.

op teerpaaie (op die ovaalbaan) bygevoeg. En, net om die nagmerrie verder te verdonker, het die winterweer voorspelbaar vir storms en reën gesorg. Die grondpaaie was seepgladde modder. Maar nie eens die teerpaaie het hieraan ontkom nie – die Saterdag se laaste twee skofte moes gekanselleer word weens poele water wat gestaan het. Vrydag het Cronjé en Poulter albei goed weggespring. Die twee – wat eintlik maar die pas aangee in vanjaar se seisoen – het elk ’n skofsege behaal. In die derde skof kry Cronjé egter ’n pap wiel, wat hom 17 sekondes stadiger as beplan by die eindstreep laat aankom het. Hy het die res van die ren gesukkel om dié tydgaping op te maak.

Toe Vrydag se sesde en finale skof afgehandel is, was Poulter ’n stewige 36 sekondes voor Cronjé. Vrydagnag het die reënbuie meedoënloos uitgesak. Toe die jaers by die plantasiepaaie aankom, was dit net glibberige modder en poele water. Cronjé het nog gevoel-voel om druk op Poulter te sit, en hier en daar ’n sekonde ingekatrol. Maar die risiko was te groot om die motor te rol of te beskadig. Dus is daar in die Fiesta se kajuit besluit om eerder seker te maak van ’n tweede plek as om kanse te waag vir ’n eerste plek. Saterdag is bowenal besluit om die dag se laaste twee skofte, by die Baai se ovaalbaan,
