Car dealer’s show in support of children in need of care HEILIE COMBRINCK When the road of an award-winning local car dealer which supports a youth centre, crosses the path of an award-winning entertainer who established a Kids Help Fund, the outcome can just be award-winning too!

“Since Market Square adopted these homes, on a monthly basis they spoil resident children on their birthdays,” said Zulyka Scott, Oosterland Youth Centre: Fundraiser. Market Square’s involvement at the Centre was the initiative of its Dealer Principal, Tracy Weise. “She wished to have Market Square’s personnel involved in a local sustainable project where their involvement makes a difference and contributes to building a brighter future. And it surely does.” In an effort to support the Centre through raising of funds it was decided to host a Cocktail & Canapé evening with wellknown all-round entertainer Ian von Memerty as the special guest. Weise together with colleague Natasha Schultz, Scott and various sponsors are driving this evening of socializing and entertainment. Ian von Memerty has received 15 national theatre awards, and has been nominated a further 17 times. He is best known as the presenter of the hit television series Strictly Come Dancing

Former VWSA MD returns to factory 21 years later Peter Searle, Managing Director of Volkswagen South Africa from 1988 until 1994 returned to the factory 21 years after retiring. He toured the world-class production facilities with his grandson, Christopher, in the comfort of the popular FactoryTour vehicle. The Volkswagen FactoryTour vehicle which was launched in June 2013, allows visitors to experience a tour of Volkswagen Group South Africa’s manufacturing factory in Uitenhage in comfort and style. “With over 10 000 visitors to our factory annually, the FactoryTour Vehicle has helped speed up the factory tours especially with the senior citizens that sometimes struggle to walk around the factory,” explained Matt Gennrich, General Manager Group Communications. “Another benefit is that it has also allowed us to reduce the minimum age of our visitors to eight years owing to the improved safety of being transported in the FactoryTour vehicle.” Volkswagen’s factory tours take place on Mondays to Thursdays at 09:00 and 12:00. HEILIE COMBRINCK Vandag, 60 jaar gelede, het Douglas (88) en Daphne (83) Martin in die Uitenhage Congregational kerk se gang afgestap en mekaar trou belowe. Pastoor Jafta het op 30 Julie 1955 dié huwelikseremonie behartig en hulle seën toegewens. Geseënd was dié egpaar voorwaar met vyf seuns wat uit die huwelik gebore is, sewe kleinkinders en twee agter-kleinkinders. Een van hulle seuns is egter op ’n baie jong ouderdom oorlede. Die raad wat die Martin-egpaar gee vir ’n lang gelukkige huwelik is dat, “’n Mens moet stry om tot ’n verstandhouding te kom. “Om te verskil laat ’n mens gesels. Maar jy moet nooit kwaad gaan slaap nie!” Een van hulle seuns, Le-Roy

Martin sê, “Ek sien al 47 jaar wat hulle dryf om 60 jaar bymekaar te wees. Die een sê so en die ander een sê ‘ja maar ek het so gesê’. En dan praat hulle aanmekaar tot die verskil uitgesorteer is.” Daphne vertel dat sy soms ongeduldig is en dat “sewe sakke sout” deel is van ’n huwelik. Douglas was ’n bekende messelaar van beroep. Hy glo dat net soos ’n stewige fondasie nodig is vir ’n gebou, behoort ’n huwelik ook op ’n stewige fondasie gebou te word wat bestaan uit geloof, hoop en liefde. “Hierdie huis van ons hier op Uitenhage se fondasie is 1.2 meter diep. Die huis staan so stewig soos ’n rots. Ons huwelik is dieselfde, dit is diep gegrond op vaste beginsels,” het Douglas gesê. Douglas Martin was een van die messelaars wat deel was van die bouspan wat Volkswagen van Suid-Afrika se eerste gebou hier op Uitenhage opgerig het.

Rivierstroom te sterk vir polisiebakkie CARALEE SCHEUN

Ashton Mew, was aan diens en op pad na ’n persoon in Kruisrivier toe sy bakkie in die rivier wat oor die laagwaterbrug loop, opgelig en meegesleur is tot langs die brug,” het sers. Majola Nkohli, ’n polisiewoordvoerder, gesê. Volgens hom het die polisiebeampte dadelik uit die bakkie gespring toe hy sien die stroom het beheer oor die voertuig geneem. Van der Touw, wie se sandgroef naby die laagwaterbrug is, is gevra om die polisievoertuig uit die stroom te trek. “Die polisiebeampte was deurnat en het effens vaal om die kiewe gelyk toe hy hulp kom vra,” het Van der Touw gesê.

Local diabetes support group meets The Uitenhage Diabetes Support Group will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 5th (18:00) at the Andries Marais Boardroom at Netcare Cuyler Hospital. The aim of the support group is to assist people with diabetes living in the Despatch and Uitenhage regions to understand more about how to control this lifelong condition and how to avoid the nasty complications of uncontrolled diabetes. will be Barbara Foot, a qualified pharmacist who works as a Diabetes Educator at the Medical Department. TANYA VAN ZYL THE UD News Miss Matric Dance competition is here and we are looking to crown the first ever UD News Miss Matric Dance for 2015. Matric girls who attended their matric dance can now start entering our competition and stand a chance to win fabulous prizes. We don’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet, but there are some great prizes up for grabs this year. It is the first time that the competition will be brought to you by the UD News, after its huge success in our sister publication, the PE Express last year, which saw close to 400 qualifying entries. This year we are looking for the matric girl who has the complete look to become our first Miss Matric Dance. Entrants will be judged on their overall look – including the dress, hair, make-up and accessories – so be sure to send a photo where the judges can clearly get the complete picture. Our judges will choose three finalists each month in August, September and October, making up nine (9) finalists. The judges will then choose 10 wildcards from all the entries we received and the public will have to vote for their favourite wildcard, which will then be the tenth finalist in this year’s Miss Matric Dance. To enter matric girls must upload their matric dance photo on our Miss Matric Dance competi-

tion page, which can be found on our Facebook page (UD News|Nuus). At the top of the page, click on the Miss Matric Dance tab, which will take you to the entry form where you can upload your photo and details. No photos that are posted on our timeline or photos that are e-mailed to us will be accepted. Kruisrivier an area to take note of The Kruisrivier Industrial Area in Uitenhage, next to the Swartkops River is known for its various industries. Few people are aware that in geological terms it is part of The Uitenhage Artesian Basin (UAB) which is South Africa’s most important artesian groundwater basin. Kruisrivier actually is not a river, but the region where the Elands River meets the Swartkops River. This groundwater basin supplies water for domestic use to Uitenhage, as well as supporting irrigation schemes and industries.

The industrial area includes from engineering companies, a plant of one of South Africa’s largest chicken producers, a leather tannery and leather furniture manufacturer, one of South Africa’s well-known manufacturers of custom limousines and hearses, various motor component manufacturers to the Uitenhage SPCA and various other businesses. Man vs machine This weekend sees the 2015 Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race getting underway from 09:00 at the PE Station with teams of 6 participants taking on a Metrorail train over the 38km distance between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage. In an exciting twist this year, the team composition was changed to include a mountain bike stage which makes it one of the more unique duathlon relay events in the country. The first teams expected to cross the finish line just after 10:30. The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race, hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, is the only event which incorporates the three towns which make up the Metro and involves companies, clubs, schools and social teams. Through this event, organisers are hoping to create awareness and support for Love Story.

.The Warwick Mixed Classic has been postponed to later in the year when the calendar is not as congested. .Old Muirite Sunday Bowls will be played in the morning on Sunday, September 13th. Mixed teams are acceptable. .Attendance draw total is R400. Taking top honours was Pierre van der Westhuizen on 18 points closely followed by Hettie Steenberg in 2nd place on 17.5 points. The Morris Olivier sponsored prize for nearest to pins on short holes went to Renzo Vaghi on the 13th and Hans Botha on the 17th hole. Two clubs were recorded by Hans Botha, Louis Sherman and “No 1” Hein McLeod, all on the 17th hole. “The Phantom” laid claim to the Teddy Bear with whiskey draw scooped by Ernest Dyer.

Badminton club wants to recruit young players

HEILIE COMBRINCK A badminton awareness project has been implemented in the Despatch and Uitenhage regions with the aim to get more youngsters involved in this racket sport. This awareness project is in line with the mission of Eastern Province Badminton Association to develop and promote the sport. Badminton is one of the Olympics’ newest sports. Since 1992 it became an official Summer Olympics sport at the Barcelona Olympics. The beginnings of badminton are traced back to the mid 1800s in the then British India where the sport was created by British military officers. The sport is actually related to ball badminton which originated in Tamil Nadu. The fastest recorded tennis stroke is 263km/h whilst the fastest badminton stroke during play was 332km/h. Taking into account that the basic size of a tennis court is 23.77m x 10.97m in comparison with a badminton court of 13.40m x 6.10m it is noteworthye that it is a fast game. The Despatch Badminton Club visited schools to promote the sport and recruited a few children.
