Só is die sewejarige Siviwe Dingani, ’n gr.1-leerder aan Despatch Primêre Skool, gister deur sy klasonderwyseres, Sylvia Maree, onthou. Siviwe is verlede Donderdag enkele meters vanaf die skool noodlottig deur ’n vragmotor getref. Die leerders en personeel het gister ’n roudiens gehou waarná hulle ’n kruisie in Ooievaarsingel, waar die ongeluk gebeur het, opgerig het. Sy ouers, klasmaats en die breë Despatchgemeenskap kon hier, waar hulle onkeerbaar aan die grusame ongelukstoneel herinner was, nie langer hul trane inhou nie. Danny Jacobs, skoolhoof, het Siviwe se ma, Andiswa, genooi om ’n blommekrans ter herinnering aan haar seun langs die skool se heining neer te lê. Sy bedroefde klasmaats het ook een vir een húl blomme neergesit. “Dit is vir ons ’n groot slag – een wat ons nie maklik sal vergeet nie,” het Jacobs gesê. “Mag hierdie kruisie langs die heining ons nie net aan hom herinner nie, maar ’n inspirasie wees om ons kinders se veiligheid beter te prioritiseer.” Siviwe het Donderdag glo soos elke ander oggend hand-aan-hand saam met ’n 9-jarige meisie skooltoe gestap. Die skoolklok het gelui en die seuntjie het oor die pad gehardloop toe die vragmotor uit Loeriestraat in Ooievaarsingel gedraai het en hom gestamp en meters ver meegesleep het. Dit is in die stadium nog onbekend of die vragmotor bestuurder wél bo die spoedbeperking gery het. Volgens sers. Majola Nkohli, ’n polisiewoordvoerder, sal die ondersoek na strafbare manslag eers voortgesit word wanneer die bestuurder sy verklaring aflê. “Volgens die bestuurder se regsverteenwoordiger is hy erg getraumatiseer. Sodra hy gereed is, sal hy ’n verklaring indien,” het Nkohli verduidelik. Siviwe se ongeluk kom ’n dag ná die skool en gemeenskap ’n petisie onderteken het om

spoedhobbels in Ooievaarsingel aan te bring. Jacobs sê die skool en gemeenskap sit sedertdien nóg meer druk op die owerhede. “So iets mag nooit weer gebeur nie. Wie bla-

meer mens vir sy vroeë dood, behalwe die bestuurder?” wou Jacobs weet. “As hy maar net stadiger om die draai gekom het, kon dinge vandag dalk anders gewees het.”

ilent Soldier motorfietsklubs is gestig met die doel om alle oudlede van die weermag en polisie wat sedert 1966 tot 1989 in die grensoorlog betrokke was by te staan. “Ons doel is om behoeftige oud-veterane te help deur middel van die skenking van rolstoele, loopringe of selfs finansieël,” het André Hall, vise-voorsitter van Silent Soldiers motorfietsklub se Oos-Kaap-tak gesê. Die eerste groot plaaslike fondsinsameling word Sondag vanaf 10:00 by die Uitenhage duiweklub in Mitchellstraat gehou. “Ons gaan ’n rolstoel oorhandig aan ’n oudpolisielid wat sy been verloor het. Verder gaan ons fondse insamel om nog rolstoele te

bekom,” het Hall gesê. Die bywoningssyfer vir Sondag se byeenkoms staan tans op sowat 150 motorfietsryers en verkeie donateurs het reeds bygedra tot die dag aktiwiteite. “Ons begin met skriflesing en gebed, waarna vliegduiwe vrygelaat word. Dan is dit tyd vir vermaak.” Aktiwiteite van die dag sluit in rolstoelresies, toutrek, bandgooi (tyre throw) en nog vele ander speletjies waar pryse gewen kan word. Verversings sal te koop aangebied word en daar sal musiek gemaak word deur ‘n orkes. THE UD News Miss Matric Dance competition received its first entries and we are looking to crown the first ever UD News Miss Matric Dance for 2015. Matric girls who attended their matric dance can now start entering our competition and stand a chance to win fabulous prizes. It is the first time that the competition will be brought to you by the UD News, after its huge success in our sister publication, the PE Express last year, which saw close to 400 qualifying entries. This year we are looking for the matric girl who has the complete look to become our first Miss Matric Dance. Entrants will be judged on their overall look – including the dress, hair, make-up and accessories – so be sure to send a photo where the judges can clearly get the complete picture. Our judges will choose three finalists each month in August, September and October, making up nine (9) finalists. The judges will then choose 10 wildcards from all the entries we received and the public will have to vote for their favourite wildcard, which will then be the tenth finalist in this year’s Miss Matric Dance. To enter matric girls must upload their matric dance photo on our Miss Matric Dance competition page, which can be found on our Facebook page (UD News|Nuus). At the top

Police successes

Members from Uitenhage police conducted a roadblock with the assistance of the local traffic last Friday on the R334, between Motherwell and Uitenhage and a total of 52 traffic fines were issued. Uitenhage police members also visited various liquor outlets in town and three fines were issued in terms of the non-compliance with the liquor act.

According to W/O Gerda Swart, a 22-yearold suspect was arrested after Uitenhage police members followed up on information. “The suspect was found in possession of stolen VW parts worth more than R250 000. He was arrested on the spot in Durban Street,”said W/O Swart. The suspect appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The Uitenhage SPCA is hosting an open day with jumble sale on Sunday with the aim to attract the public and facilitate adoptions. “We will be there between 10:00 and 12:00 and members of the public are urged to consider adopting and thus offering one of the dogs or cats a loving home of its own,” said Christelle Erasmus from the Uitenhage SPCA. Mohair industry joins hands to warm hearts of youth

lta Lategan, a retired music teacher from Uitenhage, discovered that the town is home to the biggest Mohair processing plant and decided to introduce kids to workings of this industry. She became involved with a group of children from her area (ages 8-17). They visit her on a weekly basis at home where she teaches them from the Bible and tries to expose them to a wider world. “She contacted Mohair SA for assistance. Touched by her story Mohair SA decided to collaborate with the local Mohair processors. SAMIL agreed to co-ordinate an educational

outing for the children,” said Robyn Rütters from Mohair SA Media and Communications. “The eyes of 12 children lit up as they were guided on a tour through Cape Mohair and Wool to explain the sorting process of the greasy mohair. The tour ended by handing all the children a chance to let their hair down by jumping into the heaps of Mohair.” The young audience enthusiastically quizzed their friendly “tourguide”, Michelle Pyper from SAMIL and loved experimenting with the Mohair yarns. When their outing came to an end each child received a Mohair hamper that included a pair of Mohair socks, as well as a Mohair blanket to keep him or her warm during winter. They expressed their heartfelt apprecia-

tion by singing their ‘thank you’ song to all involved with the planning of the day. “We often take the knowledge and experiences which we have acquired by our daily situations for granted. Alta’s contribution to these young children enriches the lives of our youths. Although this was a 67minute for Mandela Day contribution from the Mohair Industry, learning something new is a gift that lasts forever,” said Rütters. Through marketing, and various other functions, Mohair SA aims to promote the advancement of the entire Mohair industry. From producer to processor, buyer to manufacturer, Mohair SA plays a key role in creating a sustainable demand and ensuring profitability for all role players.

DP se B-span het hulle liga met gemak gewen en hulle is vir die 2014 en 2015 seisoene onoorwonne in hulle liga.

Tydens die tweede kwartaal wen beide DP se A en B-spanne hulle onderskeidelike ligas. Die skool hoop dat van hulle gholfspelers later die jaar ook hulle OP-kleure sal verwerf. he young running stars from Uitenhage’s Gamble Pharmacy team took the lead from the start in the second addition of the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race and crossed the finish line in 1 hour 57 minutes.

This year the runners got the better of the train with the top four teams beating the train, as unexpected signal delays along the route slowed down the defending champion (the train). This was the second addition of the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race, hosted by NMBT, where athletes took on machine in a race against the Metrorail train between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage stations. Defending champions IAC Investments arrived some 5 minutes later whilst the club category defending champions Charlo AC crossed the line in third place overall to claim their category honours once again. The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race is a unique biathlon relay event which is the only sporting event in the metro which involves the three towns of the Metro as runners started in Port Elizabeth before heading through Swartkops, Redhouse, Despatch and into Uitenhage. “We were blessed with perfect weather which made for a very festive event,” said race organiser Michael Zoetmulder from nonprofit events company Zsports. “Not only were the competing teams having fun, but the 700 train passengers also had a great time along the route and at the festival finish at Uitenhage Station. “We anticipate this event to grow substantially in popularity as one of the Provinces leading corporate team building events.” The race, which was open to teams comprising 5 runners and 1 MTB cyclist, included a corHANNES MEYER MOTORS porate, social, club 85 Main Street, Despatch and schools categoTel: 041 933 6689 Fax: 041 933 4057 ry.
