“Dit sal glo voor die Wêreldbekerwedstryd tussen Nieu-Seeland en Argentinië in die Wembley-stadion aan my oorhandig word,” het Gerber gesê. Wêreldrugby erken volgens die brief met die inhuldiging Gerber se “uitstekende prestasies en bydraes wat gehelp het om wêreldrugby te vorm”. Onder die Suid-Afrikaners wat al deur Wêreldrugby vereer is, is Danie Craven, Frik du Preez en Kitch Christie. Dis nie die eerste keer dat Gerber op internasionale vlak vereer word nie. ’n Paar jaar gelede het ’n Franse rugbykoerant sy beste span van die eeu gekies en Gerber na Parys gevlieg vir ’n groot makietie. Gerber se rugbytalent is as 13-jarige leerder by Laerskool Susannah Fourie op Despatch raakgesien deur die destydse sportafrigter Blits Fourie. Sedert daardie kaalvoetdae was dit net een pad vir dié Doring van Despatch en dit was reguit doellyn toe!

ie legendariese Danie Gerber, een van die beste rugbyspelers wat die Oos-Kaap nog opgelewer het, word volgende maand uiteindelik deur Wêreldrugby vereer.
Die 57-jarige Gerber word op Sondag, 20 September in Londen in die wêreldrugby-heldesaal ingehuldig. “Ek het nooit in my wildste drome gedink só ’n eer sou my ooit te beurt val nie,” het die Doring van Despatch, soos Gerber in sy speeldae ook genoem is, gesê. “Veral omdat ek in so min toetse gespeel het. Maar iewers het ek darem seker naam gemaak.” Gerber, wat in 24 toetse gespeel het, het sy debuut in 1980 vir die Springbokke gemaak en in 1992 in sy laaste toets gespeel. Hy is steeds op skolevlak by rugby betrokke as afrigter en talentsoeker. Luidens die brief wat Gerber van Bernard Lapasset, die voorsitter van Wêreldrugby, ontvang het, sal hy ’n geraamde pet en goue naald ontvang.

Unexpected box of books the ‘best gift’ HEILIE COMBRINCK An unexpected box filled with children’s educational literature, left without any notice at the entrance of a Uitenhage play school, made Darweesha Rockman feel overwhelmed by this kindhearted gesture. “It really brought tears to my eyes. She is in the process of restructuring her KooWee Kids Educare at 57 Dunn Road in Levyvale. One of the new additions to the play school will be a library corner for kids. According to her the books all are in a good condition and there are even brand new ones. “I have no way of thanking the person for this wonderful gesture. This kind of kindheartedness you do not see very often where people do something without getting a thank you. “Whoever dropped off these books - I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart.”

Deelnemers aan ‘Amazing Race’ laat waai HEILIE COMBRINCK Nie die breinknopers, wind of reën kon die spangees van deelnemers aan vanjaar se Amazing Race Uitenhage demp nie. Asof dit nie vir genoeg lag gesorg het nie, was spanne ook opdrag gegee om motorvensters te was. Na die afloop van dié dag het die spanne gewys daar kan deur pret en plesier ‘n verskil gemaak word in ander se lewens. Die geelspan, “Die Coureurs” genoem was die dag se wenners en die spanlede was Anton en Chenae Oosthuizen, Hayden Davis en Danielle de Jager. Die rooispan, “3 Jacks and a Jill” was tweede met spanlede Jaco de Villi-
ers, Karmen Niemand, Erica Niemand en Maronize Groepe en in die derde plek was die persspan “Firefly Africa” met Jonker, Michele, Dylan en Megan Fourie. Die resies is georganiseer deur NGK Uitenhage-Oos. Die groep wil help om enige diere wat gevind of vermis is met hulle eienaars te verenig,” het Yolandé Wait, stigter van die Lost or Found Animals Despatch, Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth Facebook groep gesê. Sy het onlangs ’n donasie-projek op dié Facebook groep geloods om die Uitenhage DBV te ondersteun. Verskeie pryse kon deur deelnemers gewen word. “Hierdie projek se sukses is te danke aan die publiek se ondersteuning. Met hulle deel-

In the past the organisers experienced some problems in taking aerial photos of the completed logo, but this year they hope to set up a few static cameras to closely follow the building of the logo.

will be hosting a VW Parade & Logo Day during September. Organiser Hennie du Toit said all Volkswagen vehicles prior to the year 2000 are invited to take part in the motorcade and logo day. This includes cars ranging from the aircooled Beetles, Kombis, trikes, Karmann Ghia, Citi Golf, Fox, Caddy, Passat and Polo up to 1999 models. “We hope to exceed and improve on the previous logo attempt during 2011 when it was the 60th anniversary of Volkswagen of South Africa,” said Du Toit. All participants will meet at the VW AutoPavillion on September 20th. The motorcade will commence at 09:00 and follow a preplanned route along Algoa Road into Durban Street, Market Street, Caledon Street and then on to the R75 towards Despatch. The formation of the VW logo will be held at the Frans Conradie Primary school sports field. Renowned VW historian, John Lemon will be in attendance during this year’s attempt. “We also want to invite the elderly citizens from Rosa Munch, Aandmymering and Huis Najaar to be passengers during the motorcade as part of our community service.”
