ANNA PAUW Drie van die vier Oos-Kaapse skoolkore wat aan die eindronde van die jaarlikse ATKV Applous-koorkompetisie deelgeneem het is van Uitenhage. Riebeek College, Muir College en die Hoërskool Strelitzia van Uitenhage asook die Stirling Primary School van Oos-Londen het teen die land se voorste skoolkore in Port Elizabeth se Veremarksaal meegeding. Applous se finale is vanjaar vir die eerste

keer in 38 jaar in die Oos-Kaap aangebied. Meer as 2 000 koorlede van 15 laer- en 24 hoërskole het in die eindronde gesing met meer as 4 500 toeskouers oor die vier dae. Die Oos-Kaapse skoolkore het uitstekend gevaar. Strelitzia se koor was die enigste OosKaapse koor wat ‘n kategoriewenner was en het dié titel van Beste Afrikaanse Gemengde Hoërskoolkoor weggeraap voor 5 ander Afrikaanse gemengde kore van die Wes-Kaap, Gauteng, Noordwes en Limpopo. Slegs 4 koorlede in Strelitzia is Afrikaans – dit opsigself maak hierdie prestasie beson-

ders. Hulle en Riebeek het goue toekennings ontvang vir die Beste Uitvoering van ‘n Afrikalied in die algeheel Afrikaans Hoërskoolkoorkategorie. Strelitzia het algeheel 2de van 9 kore gekom in die bogenoemde kategorie. Muir College het ’n silwer toekenning ontvang. Japie Gouws, die ATKV se besturende direkteur, het tydens die prysuitdeling gesê dié kompetisie is eiesoortig aan Suid-Afrika en dat baie van die skoolkore gelyk aan wêreldstandaard is.

SPCA thankful for local businesses’ support from the Uitenhage SPCA management board. Unfortunately as can be expected, an ageing vehicle requires more maintenance, incurring costs which the organisation can ill afford. Johan Jonker, better known as “Vingers” and the owner of Auto Works was the SPCA’s “knight in shining armour!” According to Swift, Johan’s response to repair the vehicle at no cost was incredible. “He offered to sponsor future maintenance as well. Increase in burglaries Police stations within the Uitenhage Cluster are concerned about the sudden increase in burglaries at residential homes and the theft out of motor vehicles in the area. “We request the assistance of the community in our fight against crime by means of taking precautionary safety measures,” said W/O Gerda Swart, spokesperson of the SAPS Uitenhage Cluster. Burglaries occur mainly during day time, when occupants have already left for work. “The community should to be more vigilant and also report suspicious characters or vehicles to their nearest police station. Remember to write down the registration number of the vehicle, the colour and the make,” said W/O Swart.

The police request homeowners to:

*Install security gates at outside doors and keep them locked. *Ensure that all your apertures are protected by quality security products. *A good burglar alarm and deterrent security with armed response will help to protect your property. *Get involved in sector policing in your area and keep your neighbour’s contact numbers handy. *Don’t leave your garage, front or back door open or partially open – it serves as an invitation to burglars. *Make provision for good outside lighting. Remember: outside lights that are on during the day

Hot action at car giveaways Winter blues were blown away when two brand new cars were given away in true Bingo Royale style on August 8. Hundreds of excited bingo lovers crowded into the Bingo Royale outlets in Jeffreys Bay and Cleary Park, Port Elizabeth, to be part of the action and fun for a special new car draw and other prizes. At the pop of a balloon Colleen Booysen became the excited owner of a brand new Toyota Etios in Jeffreys Bay. The excitement and fun was echoed in Cleary Park, where Glenda Okkers won the first shiny new Toyota Etios, which has been standing outside the venue for the last two months. In addition, lucky Bingo Royale party goers won R5 000 in lucky draws, with hundreds of rand also being plucked out of the air in the money showers at the two venues. Many made a night of it, enjoying a meal and good company at Vinny’s Italian Joint in Cleary Park and the Bingo Royale Café in Jeffreys Bay.

Live entertainment in Jeffreys Bay was provided by Melvyn Matthews, while Algoa FM DJ Charlton Tobias helped get the party started. Cleary Park favourite Patrick Lindoor provided the entertainment, with Algoa FM’s KayCee Rossouw being the master of ceremonies. New Toyota Etios cars are also up for grabs at the Bingo Royale in East London and Ritz Bingo in Mthatha. The Mthatha draw will be on September 26 at four pm, and East London on October 3 from six pm. Jeffreys Bay and Cleary Park bingo players will have an opportunity to win a new car in simultaneous draws at nine in the evening on October 3. All the car draws will be accompanied by live music, cash give-aways and money showers. All four bingo outlets in the Bingo Royale family will be giving away new cars every two months. The cars can be seen at the entrance to the outlets.

The Uitenhage Lion Club flagship service project is back up again after a two term lay off for reasons not under their control. The winter jersey campaign commenced in 2006 as a result of the high unemployment in the Uitenhage and Despatch communities. This campaign is where school winter jerseys are donated to no fee primary schools only for those children in need. “Normally donations are handed to the schools at the commencement of the second school quarter for which we will definitely aim for next year,” said Lion President André van Niekerk The main source of funds raised to make the project a reality is derived from the highly successful Lion Rally which is held in Cradock over the first weekend of December each year. The primary schools which benefitted from the 2015 Lions Winter Jersey Project are Innes, Winterberg, Despatch Primary and Albertyn.

It’s nearly Spring and time to spring into action in aid of persons with disabilities by supporting Casual Day on Friday, September 4th. It is a time for joy, for smelling the flowers, and enjoying the awakening of the season. On this day the Casual Day community takes time out to celebrate persons with disabilities and making sure that we are all one big family. The creativity is bursting out all over by dressing up or down in funny outfits. The theme is “Spring” so take your inspiration from the birds and the bees, the skies of blue, the colours of the rainbow, the blossoms on the trees and the minty hue of new leaves. The colour for the year is refreshing, zingy mint. Golf day at Kirkwood to raise funds for pet sterilization “The CVC tries to fill a need for pet owners to be able to provide basic health care and welfare to their animals,” said Ulrica Stiemie from the Vallei CVC. “Along with offering sterilizations and vaccinations the CVC also promotes humane education especially to the children in these communities, creating awareness of empathy and caring towards animals, hoping to bring an end to animal suffering through ignorance and uncontrolled breeding.” This year, CVC will be hosting a golf day, combining a fun day on the green with raising funds for the continued sterilization of the Sundays River Valley community pets. The Vallei Community Veterinary Clinic, together with volunteer community members, strives to educate pet owners from disadvantaged areas in the Sundays River Valley on basic pet health care. The Vallei CVC has been running for a number of years, building a relationship with the pet owners and providing a monthly sterilization clinic to help control the ever expanding pet population. Hand in hand with creating a sense of responsibility towards their pets, owners are requested a ‘donation’ towards the sterilization of their pets. However the amount they can afford, does not cover the costs. This is where continued fund-raising efforts by volunteers is a necessity to keep the CVC running. The CVC, which is run by SAVA (South African Veterinary Association) is a country-wide primary veterinary health care organisation for animals from disadvantaged communities.
