he popularity of mountain biking among cyclists from the Despatch and Uitenhage areas is in full speed with more and more tackling robust roads. Daniel Pienaar THS also hit the road and is the only school in town which offers mountain biking as a school sport. Its team last year participated in the Spur School MTB Challenge and was the provincial winner. It then competed in the nationals which was held in Magaliesburg. A teacher involved with the sport spotted the opportunity of developing a mountain bike track next to Daniel Pienaar. “It always is an issue for the learners to get a suitable track to exercise. So, I thought this area adjacent to the sports grounds is perfect,” said Sampie Marais from Daniel Pienaar THS. The Nelson Mandela Metropole Municipality gave the green light for the open area to be utilized for recreational purposes. Thanks to a

financial donation from a learners grandfather, Marais single-handedly started to bulldoze a track. The Wavelengths Construction company later assisted Marais, by offering their earthmoving equipment to build obstacles and clear the area. “We really want to thank them for their keen assistance and great job done. They did far more than I expected,” said Marais. He also posted a request for further assistance on the Daniel Pienaar Alma Mater Facebook page. “I thought I’d try my luck. Once again the reaction was overwhelming and with the Alma Mater on board we managed to complete the track. Thank you guys, your contributions are much appreciated,” said Marais. Earthmoving equipment, which normally costs R500 per hour, was rendered to us free of charge. Goodyear, through the motivation of a DP old boy, donated tyres which were used to outline certain areas of the track. “I’ve spend three weeks of the school holiday

to complete the track. I must admit, I really enjoyed it. Especially to see now how the boys and keen cyclists are having fun here at the track,” said Marais. The track is open to the public to enjoy offroad cycling. No off-road motorbikes are however, allowed to race at the track. Although it is an elementary track, it offers the opportunity to exercise in a safe environment. The total distance is 5.3 km starting at the DP pavilion where there are rest room facilities and parking. It covers 1.5 km in the school yard before hitting the off-road between the sports grounds and the train track. ) First MTB challenge The inaugural DP Mountain Bike Challenge will be held on Thursday, September 24th (public holiday) in conjuction with the UD News. The Baby Spring Look competition will commence at 12:30 and the categories are 0-6 months; 7-12; 13-18; 1924; 25-36 months. Join forum to help combat drug abuse HEILIE COMBRINCK Substance abuse is rife and occurs in many homes, perhaps a husband, wife or child abusing alcohol or drugs or even prescription medication. Communities are plagued with break-ins or stealing by addicts, just to get another fix. Health24 states that in 2013 one out of ten South Africans has an addiction problem. “That is the reason why the Community Substance Forum was formed. This committee is part of the Local Drug Action Committee better known as LDAC of the Metro,” said Social Worker Heidi Botha who also is the Chairperson of the Local Drug Action Committee.

The functions of this committee are to ensure that effect is given to the National Drug Master Plan, to compile action plans to combat substance abuse and to ensure these plans are relevant and lastly to implement these plans. “The vision is to have a drug-free society and the mission is to reduce the demand for alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, to reduce the harm associated with substance abuse and to reduce the supply of illicit substances,” said Botha. Any interested persons or stakeholders involved with the combating of substance abuse are welcome to join monthly meetings held at Uitenhage High School. R4R help heal emotional scars HEILIE COMBRINCK Reach for Recovery (R4R) is built on a simple yet universal principle: a woman who has experienced breast cancer giving freely of her time to support another woman with breast cancer. “We are looking for volunteers and new friends who have walked the road and have recovered from breast cancer. We would like to meet you all over a cup of tea,” said Estelle Botha, Chairperson of the Reach for Recovery Breast Cancer Support Group in Uitenhage. This cup of tea will be at the Reach for Recovery Annual General Meeting which will be held on Tuesday, September 1st at the

John Street Methodist Church hall at 15:00. All interested are most welcome to attend. The support group is all about women who have experienced the breast cancer journey, to render emotional care to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families. Bewaarskool hou peuter- en kleuter-kompetisie

Sewage spill at health facility HEILIE COMBRINCK Yes, you can become very sick if you come into contact with water that is polluted with sewage. Sewage is faecal matter. Therefore the sewage spill at the parking area of the Uitenhage Park Centre Clinic in Cannon Street is a huge matter of concern to staff members. “Sewage at a health facility is unacceptable,” said Douglas Roman, Clinic Committee member of the Nelson Mandela Metro Health Sub District B, Park Centre Clinic. “I am visiting the clinic on a daily basis to monitor the situation. Clients are complaining to us as a committee regarding the sewage spill at the Clinic,” said Roman. He approached the Sister in charge, as there was also sewage flowing to the yard from

the Magennis Park side. “She said she reported the problem to the municipality, but has not received any response yet. She further explained that a letter from the staff concerning the yard and sewage, has been sent to the relevant persons.” The backyard is muddy and bumpy, especially after rain. According to Roman, this has been an ongoing problem since 2012, but it currently is in a terrible situation. “I am inviting the MEC or anyone to come and see the condition. When it rains the parking area can not be utilized,” said Roman. Most people visiting the clinic do have health conditions that need treatment. Visiting a premises where viral infections are “breeding” as a result of broken or blocked sewer mains which cause sewage spills, is a huge concern.

Hy was een van die 26 Suid-Afrikaanse deelnemers. “Ek het voor die tyd op Google geboer en na die afstande gekyk in spiesgooi, gewigstoot en hamergooi. Toe sien ek, nee boetie . . . met die spies en gewig gaan ek nie in my ouderdomsgroep die paal haal nie. Maar in hamergooi het ek gesien ek staan ’n goeie kans.” Senekal se “kans” is bewaarheid en hy het in die hamergooi – in die ouderdomskategorie 40 tot 44 jaar – met sy derde plek ’n bronsmedalje verdien. En terwyl hy nog op die sportveld van die George Mason-Universiteit in Virginia was, kry hy ’n WhatsApp-bood-

Convent Primary learners excel in science <Uitenhage Convent Primary learners Onesimo Ntsoeu (left) and Michael Lingham participated in the Natural Sciences & Technology Olympiad which was hosted by the Department of Education at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage. Lingham was the winner of the Uitenhage DOE District and Ntsoeu came third. They then proceeded to the provincial level which was held in East London where 23 DOE District participated. Cocktail & Canapé evening a sold out! HEILIE COMBRINCK A Cocktail & Canapé evening with wellknown all-round entertainer Ian von Memerty was held at Market Square Volkswagen last week to raise funds for Oosterland Youth Centre.

Since March 2015, Market Square VW adopted four homes at Oosterland, which accommodates 120 children placed in its care by the Children’s Court. Market Square’s involvement at Oosterland was the initiative of its Dealer Principal, Tracy Weise. The Cocktail & Canapé evening was very

well supported with guests from across the Nelson Mandela Bay in attendance. Ian von Memerty has received 15 national theatre awards, and has been nominated a further 17 times. He is best known as the presenter of the hit television series Strictly Come Dancing and

the fantastic judge on SA’s Got Talent and for his piano show A Handful of Keys. The combination of Oosterland’s slogan “Building a Future Today” combined with Market Square’s “Closer Than You Think” inspired the evening. The public are thanked for their support.

VW Road Race winner finishes in record time HEILIE COMBRINCK

very successful Volkswagen 10km Road Race was held last Saturday in Uitenhage with the start and finishing points at Brandwag High School. According to Plaaitjie Damons, Vice-chairperson of the VW Amateur Athletics Club, the male winner Frans Melikhaya from Tinarha Athletics Club, finished in a record time of (29:48). On his heels was Mariano Eesou (29:49) from NMMU Madibaz and Mzolisi Makhanda (31:17) from Nedbank Athletics Club. The first female to cross the line was Ntombi Mfunzi from Nedbank Athletics Club

(36:05) followed by Ndileka Mvakwendlu (38:25) from Tinarha Athletics Club and in third place was Jamie-Lee Schlemmer (39:07) from Madibaz NMMU. Robin Clarck (74) from Achilles Amateur Athletics Association was the oldest athlete participating and he finished the road race in a time of 1:12:34 with Orgia Nell (71) being the oldest female participant. She is from Muirite Striders Athletics Club and finished the road race in a time of 1:11:15. A total of 406 athletes participated in the 10km Road Race. “We wish to thank all the athletes for participating and also the organising committee and helpers for their hard work,” said Damons. .
