Brandwag het die Oostelike Provinsie in hierdie kompetisie verteenwoordig. Hulle het verlede naweek in die eindstryd vir Labori (Boland) oortuigend met 76-3 oor rompel op die Danie Craven-stadion in Stellenbosch. Die uitstaande kenmerk van Brandwag se spel was hul uitstekende uitvoering van basiese rugby-vaardighede. Hul akkurate hanteerwerk was een van die hoofkenmerke en daarvoor verdien Brandwag se afrigters ‘n besliste klop op die skouers. Al die Brandwag-spelers het hul stempel op die wedstryd afgedruk, maar op losskakel was Shevaan Hendricks ‘n ware generaal wat rigting aan die spel gegee het. Ook Brandwag se vleuels Davian Swanepoel en Levert Pieterse was uitstekend en hul ratse voetwerk het die skare groot genot verskaf. Die agttal van Brandwag het dwarsdeur die wedstryd die pap dik aangemaak en almal verdien vermelding vir hul puik spel. Vir Brandwag is drieë gedruk deur Swanepoel (3), Stefan Janse van Vuuren (agsteman, 3), Pieterse (2), Wian Engelbrecht (senter, 2), John Moolman (haker). Hendricks het 6 doelskoppe behaal, terwyl Janse van Vuuren, Engelbrech en Donovon Stevens (slot) ook met doelskoppe geslaag het. Hendricks was ook suksesvol met ‘n strafskop.

Mayor recommits to fight water leaks in Metro LIZEKA TANDWA Mayor Danny Jordaan has recommitted the municipality to fight water leaks. Jordaan was speaking at the launch of President Jacob Zuma’s War on Leaks campaign last Friday, with over 16 000 people in attendance at Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide. Jordaan said he, together with Zuma and the minister of water and sanitation Nomvula Makonyana, had visited a house in Zwide where a

family owed R70 000 in municipal water bills due to leakages. “We have just been to a house where they told us that their water bill is just over R70 000. We know that that poor family can never pay that money. That bill is not the result of water used during the month but rather water that is leaking during the month. In a sense, that bill is a reflection of the inability of the metro to respond to water leaks. “We then expect the people to suffer as a result and to pay for the inefficiency of the metro. We

must apologise to the people that we are unable to respond to these challenges. That is a matter that we will take up. We are endorsing and supporting and recommitting the metro to fight against water leaks,” said Jordaan. According to the municipal financial indicators, this year’s water losses cost the metro R300million and the country R7 billion a year. Zuma said through the Department of Water and Sanitation, they would train 15 000 artisans and plumbers who will fix leaking taps in their communities with Rand Water, as government’s

implementing agent. Zuma said the project would be run through a three-phased approach, identified for the recruitment, training and deployment of the plumbers, artisans and water agents over the project period. Zuma said they would train qualifying young people with Grade 12 or N3 with Maths and Science as fitters and turners, welders, instrument mechanics and electricians. The learners, who will be drawn from all nine provinces, will do repairs, retrofitting and replacements in various municipalities.

Join the green duty on ewaste in U’hage REPORTER Global statistics indicate that in 2012 an average of 20kg of e-waste for every one of the world’s 7 billion people was produced totalling a staggering amount of 50 million tons of e-waste. South Africa generated 300 000 tons of e-waste at a rate of 6.6kg per person in 2012. It is expected that by 2017 the world’s output of e-waste is expected to increase by 33% to a total of 65 million tons. This will be enough to fill a line of 40 ton trucks end-to-end reaching a distance of 30 000kms. Cleanup in Uitenhage In support of the National Clean-up Week 14 to 20 September and National E-Waste collection day celebrated on 18 September, the Dutch Reformed Church Uitenhage East partnered with Albertyn Primary school and M-zan Technologies, a local e-waste recycling company, to do their green duty for our town and the environment. From 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, 19 September residents will have the opportunity to drop any unwanted e-waste at the open field opposite Albertyn Primary School in Van der Stel Avenue. E-waste includes discarded batteries, light bulbs including fluorescent tubes, electrical cables/ wires, small and large household appliances, mobile phones, computers, monitors, empty printer cartridges, printers, toys and all other products using batteries or electricity as a power source. E-waste without safe recycling will lead to

the exposure and that most of the toxic components like Barium, Cadmium, Lead, Lithium, Mercury, Nickel, Palladium, Rhodium and Silver end up in land fill sites poisoning the soil and water. NMMU opens a firstforSA ‘green’ building REPORTER The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University officially opened its all new R116 million “green” Business School building at its 2nd Avenue Campus. The building is the first in South Africa to receive an official Green Star design rating. It’s also the first in the education or public sector to achieve a “4 Green Star design rating” by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) making the Second Avenue Campus building an official benchmark standard for future building designs in South Africa. “Nelson Mandela Bay now has a business school ranked among the top 3% worldwide. The new green Business School expresses our NMMU Vision 2020 and values. We hope that everyone will join us in celebrating the fulfilment of a dream held by so many to have a world-class business school facility in our city,” says NMMU Business School Director Prof. Steve Burgess. The Business School is also incorporating green principles into all programmes, including the new Incoko online blended learning interface designed by NMMU IT engineers. The School has implemented “paper-

Former professional ballroom dancer, Reece Moses, might have lost his sight after an accident, but he sees the beauty of life through his singing talent. Moses is very excited as he is one of the finalists in the PE FM 87.6 radio station’s singing competition in the category for singers 40 years of age and older. “I dreamt of a document, a number and someone calling for me to sing a song unknown to the person. “And the dream left me with a good feeling,” said Moses who derives from a family wellknown for their musical talents. One of them is singer and guitarist Joey Moses, a member of the popular band, The Invaders, who in their hey-day performed on stages across the globe. Moses, who lost his sight 9 years ago, loves challenges. He chose an old song “It shall flow like a River” as the item to sing during the competition. “I followed my dream. Doccie of struggle against mining rights wins various awards The Shore Break, a documentary about the proposed titanium mine and tolled highway on the Wild Coast, has garnered a series of top awards since it premiered at IDFA in Amsterdam earlier this year. Awards of this documentary directed by Ryley Grunenwald, and co-produced with Odette Geldenhuys, now include the Best Feature Length Documentary at the 2015 International Environmental Film Festival (FIFE) in Paris, the Backsberg Audience Choice Award from Encounters, the Amnesty International Durban Human Rights Award and the overall Audience Award from DIFF, and a nomination for Best Documentary at Silwerskermfees in Camps Bay. Described by the jurors of the Amnesty International Durban Human Rights Award as a “powerful portrayal of a struggle within a local community regarding foreign mining rights in a pristine environment,” (it) “concisely and movingly uncovers this complex and urgent matter, which is still under investigation and in need of public sup-

MSC Business College held its 12th graduation ceremony at the Uitenhage Town Hall on Saturday. The graduates achieved their qualifications in Management, Administration, Information Technology and Retail Travel. “The Graduation is always a highlight in the students lives. It is recognition of their hard work, commitment and determination to succeed,” said the principal, Manfred Burkert. MSC Business College Uitenhage opened its doors in 2003 and takes pride in over a decade of quality further education to students in the region. Muir chess player ranked number 1 in SA

Sixteen year old Lilitha Hempe, a grade 10 learner at Muir College Boys’ High School has excelled at chess this year. He was ranked 1st in the South African Open played in Cape Town on the 3 – 11 July. Lilitha played in numerous tournaments in preparation for the SA Open. During January he played in the “Kings and Queens Open Rapid” at Dower College and was placed 1st in the High School division. In March he entered the U/12 – U/20 EP Trials played in Uitenhage at Strelitzia High School, and competed in the U/18 division where he was placed 4th. It’s not a comfortable thought at any age, but it can be even more stressful as we approach our later years, and are faced with the realities of planning for the day we’re no longer around. Theocharis says sometimes, instead of holding on to an old property, you should relax and enjoy your golden years. “It’s difficult, and family homes can have huge sentimental value, but when a property no longer suits your needs, and you can’t keep up with the necessary maintenance and updates, holding on to it is a lose-lose situation for everyone.”

For many people, the focus of these years becomes about protecting the legacy they will leave behind; the savings and investments that will be their last gift to the family they spent their lives nurturing. This is according to Elia Theocharis, a sales agent for the Rawson Property Group’s Constantia franchise, who says, sadly, this often comes at the expense of their own quality of life and, ironically, can have the opposite of the desired effect on their assets – especially when it comes to property. “Unless it’s held by a trust, property is not an easy asset to deal with as part of an estate,” he says. “You can’t divide up the bricks of a property between multiple heirs, and you also can’t ac-

It was a night of records at the final of the 2015 Town Lodge Business Night Relay last Thursday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Both the Men’s and Ladies’ relay team course records were broken on the evening with the Gamble Pharmacy Men’s team from Uitenhage going unbeaten for the second year running after claiming the 17.5km course record in a blistering time of 57 minutes and 22 seconds. In the well represented ladies’ category, it was the girls from Charlo Athletics Club that set the new mark crossing the finish line in a time of 1 hour 18 minutes and 47 seconds. Another impressive milestone on the evening was the Still Dreaming walking team of Andre Pienaar, John Gardiner and JC Stevens who wrapped up the season with their 7th consecutive win, remaining unbeaten over the past two years. The Town Lodge Business Night Relay is a fun winter-based monthly team building in-

itiative of local non-profit events company, Zsports Events NPC, and is considered unique to Port Elizabeth given the exciting 3.5km route within the stadium and grounds of the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Four categories of entry are contested during the Series with Gamble Pharmacy winning the Men’s Category from Charlo AC and SPAR Eastern Cape on the evening. The most popular category is the Mixed teams category which saw the same companies/clubs taking the top three positions (Gamble Pharmacy, Charlo Speedsters and SPAR Eastern Cape). In the ladies category it was Charlo Speedsters from PW Harvey and Herbert Hurd Primary School parents/teachers whilst in the walking category it was the Still Dreaming team from Artwork for Youth and Afriboom Night Walkers. Halfmarathon and fun run at spring festival Days are becoming longer and warmer as the earth tilts towards the sun. This all means Spring season is on its way. The Muir College Spring Festival is annually held by Muir College as a fun day and will on Saturday, September 5th once again celebrate the season of new beginnings. The festival incorporates the Muirite Striders Amateur Athletics Club’s annual 21.1km half-marathon and 5km fun run. The Muir College Spring Festival this year will feature various food, sweet and miscellaneous stalls, a tea garden, various kids’ activities including, horse riding, pedal carts, sporting activities, kids corners, golf challenges and a strong man competition. The activities of the festival

begin when the 5km fun run ends. The 2015 athletics event is proudly sponsored by Rockets with the start and finish points at Muir College sports grounds. The half-marathon starts at 06:30 and the fun run at 07:00. Gold medals will be given to the top 10 male and female finishers in the 21.1km and all category winners. Silver medals will go to the next 100 finishers and bronze medals to the next 300 finishers. The first 300 finishers in the fun run will each receive a medal. The popularity of one of the largest charity social sports events on the Eastern Cape sporting calendar, the Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run, is growing gauging by the number of entries having already been received ahead of the event on the last weekend of September. The Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run, hosted by the MBDA to highlight urban renewal in the CBD, has enjoyed significant growth on the social calendar, not only providing a fun obstacle race for children and adults but also offering a great spectacle which draws thousands to the city centre on race weekend and it’s great to see an increasing number of participants in “fancy dress” who are inspired to dress up in costumes as unwieldy as the course itself. With just under 2 000 participants expected to ‘Tackle the City’ for charity over the weekend 26th and 27th September any notion that this is only for runners is quickly forgiven when one witnesses the large number of participants in fancy dress costumes ranging from superheroes to fully kitted out firemen.To further encourage this, the organisers have secured cash prizes for the best dressed groups with R3,000 up for grabs in the adult race and R1,000 cash in the kids’ race. “The Urban Run is not a race to determine the fastest athlete in town, it is an event that is fun and suitable for people of all ages.” says
