VW invests in children’s literacy REPORTER

olkswagen Community Trust celebrated its 25th anniversary by launching a flagship initiative that is aimed at promoting meaningful literacy in the first 10 years of a child’s life. The Early Childhood Development initiative will focus on reducing functional illiteracy, education and mental stimulation of young children. The two-day celebrations, which coincided with National Book Week, took place at the Volkswagen’s PeoplePavilion in Uitenhage. The event included a Book Fair where over 200 children were involved in various group activities aimed at fostering a love of reading. The event was attended by a high-level delegation on education led by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga along with leading education researchers, celebrated authors and thought leaders. “The Volkswagen Community Trust’s focus on Early Childhood Development is in line with the Department of Basic Education’s initiatives aimed at reducing illiteracy,” said Minister Motshekga. “In order to address illiteracy, especially in the Foundation Phase, the Department of Basic Education will be re-activating and opening 1 000 libraries every year until 2019,” added Minister
VWSA has invested more than R100 million on CSI projects during the Trust’s existence.

The Minister highlighted the importance of forging meaningful relationships in terms of addressing early childhood development issues and literacy which are at the forefront of basic education. In his address, Thomas Schaefer, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa emphasised the major role played by the Volkswagen Community Trust in the local community development in the past two decades. “Our employees under the leadership of the late John Gomomo as well as local community structures played a pivotal role in the formation of the Community Trust. “In the past 25 years, the Trust has continued to be responsive to community needs and relevant to the current realities,” said Schaefer. “Some of the other achievements of the Volkswagen Community Trust include the launch of the John Gomomo bursary as well as the disbursement of over R14 million part-bursaries to 1 249 students. “The Trust has also given grants of over R5million to local community cooperatives for local economic development, skills development and job creation.” “Our goal is to continue working together with all stakeholders present today and the funding community to ensure that all children and learners in our communities of Uitenhage and Despatch are functionally literate by the time they reach the age of 10,” concluded Schaefer. VWSA has invested more than R100 million on CSI projects during the Trust’s existence. There has been a strong emphasis on education, youth development, enterprise development, health, community and wellbeing. In addition, environmental initiatives and employee volunteerism have also been focused upon.

DP klas van ‘65 hou reünie Sewe van die sestien matrieks van HTS Daniel Pienaar se 7de matriekklas wat in 1965 hulle laaste skooljaar beleef het, hou eerskomende naweek reünie op die dorp. Die eerste DP matriekklas het in 1959 klaargemaak. “Daar is reeds 4 van ons klas van 16 oorlede. Ons het met 2 kontak verloor en 4 kan ongelukkig nie die reünie bywoon nie. Maar 7 van ons bittereinders gaan daar wees,” sê een van dié 1965 matrieks, Frans Schellingerhout. Die oud-Tiere se gades sal hulle eerskomende naweek tydens die reünie vergesel. Die program sal by die skool en in die klubhuis aangebied word. Dit skop môre af met tee saam met die personeel om 09:30 en ‘n begeleide toer deur die skool. Vrydagaand word daar saamgekuier en Saterdag is dit tyd om die Tiere in ‘n T20 krieketwedstryd te ondersteun waarna in die klubhuis gekuier en braai word. Learning a second or third language is to the benefit of a person’s interaction and communication skills. Xhosa classes have been conducted in Uitenhage and Despatch for the past few years with great success. The latest session commenced on Tuesday with the classes in Uitenhage hosted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:00-18:30 at the Department of Labour in Chase Street. y is die “Meneer” wat ’n gebore onderwyser is, want hy het ’n hart vir ’n kind. Die vertraptes kon by hom skuiling vind en die boelies hul moses. Hy was altyd aan die kant van ’n kind wat wil leer. “Meneer” Anton van Rensburg (60) is een van die geliefde onderwysers wie se stories, eiesoortige manier van klasgee en kant-kies van dié wat aan die kortste end trek, ’n verskil gemaak het aan menige kind se selfbeeld en prestasievermoë. “Ek mis nie die onderwys nie, ook nie die stelsel nie, want dit het my weggejaag. Ek mis die kinders, ek is erg oor kinders. Soms verlang ek só dat die trane sommer begin loop,” het Van Rensburg gesê. Hy het in 1977 by Laerskool Albertyn begin skoolhou as standerd 3 (graad 5) onderwyser. “Sewentien jaar later het ek standerd 3 geslaag en al die kinders gedop. Want toe raak ek ’n standerd 4 onderwyser en die standerd 3 kinders is wéér by my,” merk Van Rensburg skertsend op. Hy het einde Junie, na 38 en ’n halwe jaar, uit die onderwys getree as departementshoof. “Ek is ’n bietjie anders as die ander mense. Ek het altyd gesê ek is die oudste kind in die skool. Eenkeer ’n week het ek selfs skoolklere aangetrek.” Van Rensburg weet hoe om met kinders te kommunikeer sonder dat wedersydse respek skade ly. Hy glo kinders moet die geleentheid gebied word om hulle mening te lug, want oop

Get fit and tough the natural way doing ‘simple’ things HEILIE COMBRINCK Reality programmes like Survivor have more than once proved that it not always is the person with the intimidating muscles that is the strongest. The tough ones often are those skinny ones, with no bold biceps or top-heavy torsos. Since the opening of the CrossFit Gym at Despatch at the beginning of 2015, several local sporting enthusiasts have joined in this multiple exercise and sport fitness programme which is based on functional movements. “What makes this gym different from main stream gyms is that we do not make use of exercise machines. We focus on all-round exercises utilizing your own body weight and free weights. We also include outdoor exercising,” said Heindrich Deysel, who together with Evan Labuschagne opened the CrossFit Gym at Despatch. They both are qualified instructors and have studied Human Science Movement and Sports Management. It is conveniently situated at the Despatch high school and many of the school’s learners involved with sports have also joined the functional fitness fraternity. “It is straight forward, functional and simple movements which have survived the test of time as they give results. Something as simple as picking up a shopping bag can be a form of exercise if you do it the right way,” said Labuschagne. “It is, however, high intensity exercising and we focus on ten key aspects like speed, balance, accuracy, flexibility, co-ordination, stamina and cardiovascular endurance.

ways is a surprise element. Members simply love it as they never know what exercise will be next. I must admit the sense of camaraderie and support causes an enhanced excitement,” said Deysel. There is no quick fix for fitness. In order to get the most out of an exercise, you have to have a strong will and be committed. Being fit feels good, it inspires and in some way or

“I realised there is an opportunity, specifically in this area, to extend O’Brians by adding a restaurant. So we started Ambrosia,” said Ashley, who is running Ambrosia in partnership with Dr Nadine Roux. Ambrosia supplies O’Brians Pub with snack baskets and bar lunches. The bar menu is available from Tuesdays to Saturdays with lots of specialities to celebrate the forthcoming Rugby World Cup as well as every weekend thereafter. tions and can easily accommodate 24 guests indoors with another 30 in the restaurant yard. They also do spitbraais. It is wheelchair friendly and the non-smoking policy is applied at the premises. Ambrosia is proud of its Head Chef, Christopher Stoltz, who received his training at the Protea Hotel in Cape Town. The restaurant comprises a team of 10 fully trained staff and waitresses. The specialities at the grill include fish, chicken and steaks. Other specialities include pizzas and pastas. There also is a kiddies’ menu and a kiddies’ playing corner will be complete soon. ZWARTKOPS ROWING CLUB, REDHOUSE
Fine food and lifestyle at Redhouse HEILIE COMBRINCK
F
ine artisan food, taste bud delights, designer arts and crafts are but a few of the lifestyle treats which are awaiting festival-goers on the banks of the Zwartkops River during Saturday’s Fine Food & Lifestyle Festival at Redhouse. It is organised by South Africa’s oldest rowing club, which is still rowing from its original venue, the Zwartkops Rowing Club. The Club was established in 1873. According to Rosemary Brunette, the Club is open to membership for all persons young and old, male and female, without exception. “The ages of our rowers at present vary from 9 years old to 69 years old. Rowing is catered for at both social and competitive levels. “We compete at all the major regattas and have been successful at both the Senior and Junior South African Championship regattas,” said Brunette. “We have successfully implemented a development program for

previously disadvantaged persons. The program has been running for 2 years and is targeted primarily at the youth from the neighbouring townships and the youngsters of the Redhouse Primary School.” The Club is extending its membership by approaching schools which do not offer rowing as a sport. Training times at the river take place on weekday afternoons from 15:00 to 15:30 and Saturday mornings from 08:15 to 12:00. The Fine Food & Lifestyle Festival will be held on Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and offers various different crafts and food, live music and displays.
