Lawnmower ‘helps’ with logo! HEILIE COMBRINCK

t took the drivers of the 84 mainly aircooled Volkswagen vehicles about 10 minutes to park in the 60 diameter VW logo formation, during last Saturday’s VW Logo & Parade Day held at Despatch. “It took me three hours of precise measuring to have the logo dimensions marked on the field. And another hour to cut the grass, making it easier to park exactly on the right spot. It was a mammoth of a task,” said Hennie du Toit, organiser of the VW Logo & Parade Day. Obtaining correct dimensions of a large VW logo, for the purpose of forming a huge emblem with vehicles, was just as difficult. Du Toit had to figure it out himself, how and where to start. Luckily the legendary VW historian and archivist, John Lemon, gave him some very handy tips. “We started, with my father simply standing at the centre point, holding a 30 metre rope which was tied to my lawnmower. I then cut the outer boundary. “From there I had to cut a ‘X’ inside the circle, with the points meeting the boundary 25.6 metres apart. “And then the rest of the tricky measurements followed, which made me feel like a true surveyor.” A local drone enthusiast, Melt Koekemoer, on the day of the event, kindly offered his skills. Through these “eye-in-the-sky” visuals, it was possible to have each vehicle parked with precision.

Tourism month: Groendal pic challenge South Africa’s tourism sector is emerging as one of the most important pillars of the country’s economy in terms of growth and competition with other emerging economies of the world. This industry contributes significantly towards the creation of employment, growing the economy and developing entrepreneurs. It presents opportunities for self-employment, it contributes to rural and urban development andforeign exchange earnings. Tourism Month is an annual celebration held in September to focus on the importance of tourism to the economy of South Africa. An additional purpose is to alert locals to the attractions within their own areas. The locals are considered to be the best tourists and Tourism Month aims to increase civic pride and enable the residents to persuade visitors to spend at least an extra night in the province which will furtherboost the local economy. In aid of this and to celebrate Tourism Month, the ECPTA has planned initiatives that will showcase the area to residents and visitors alike. The ECPTA manages some incredibly diverse Nature Reserves in the Eastern Cape. A Promotional Campaign called “Go Wild” has been launched to increase awareness of the Wild Coast Provincial reserves and ultimately to increase the bookings. The stunning coastal nature reserves like Silaka, Hluleka, Dwesa and the spectacular Mkhambathi offer more than just natural splendour. And this Tourism Month the ECPTA will be offering a 20% discount on all bookings for the months of September, October and November 2015. The beautiful Groendal Wilderness Area is the only established wilderness area in the Eastern Cape roughly10km from Uitenhage, renowned for its remoteness and myriad hiking trails. Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) encourages visitors to the Groendal Wilderness area to enjoy a Hiking Trail Challenge during the month of September. Nature lovers and hikers will be encouraged to take up the Groendal Wilderness Hiking Trail Challenge hiking two or more separate trails featured in this hidden gem. The reserve offers both marked and unmarked trails that include the relatively

Miss matric dance finalists for August Tanya van Zyl

he first three finalists in our Miss Matric Dance competition have been chosen. They are Charne Mew from Despatch High School, Chanté Minnie from Despatch High School and Ziva Isaacs from Riebeek College Girls High. They are all one step closer to being crowned our first ever Miss Matric Dance and in turn win fabulous prizes. In the meantime, entries for September are open and matric girls in our distribution area (Uitenhage, Despatch, Kirkwood) have until 5pm on September 30 to become one of the next three finalists. Judges will then choose 10 wildcards

from all the entries we received and the public will have to vote for their favourite wildcard, which will then be the tenth finalist in this year’s Miss Matric Dance. At our Sunday assemblies, we cheerfully contribute to the work of the church of the church of our own free will as directed. We do not ask non-members to financially support our work. At every assembly, we pray...more than once. Prayer is a part of what we do as a congregation, as well as privately each day. We love to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. It is the most often heard comment on visitors....I so enjoyed your singing. We listen to messages from God’s Word. Biblically sound sermons are an edifying way to grow nearer to the Lord.

Clivia’s flower power on show SAVALOT STORES

It is that time of the year when most flowers show off their flower power. Clivias are just as active, with the most commonly occurring and popular species, Clivia miniata displaying their striking orange lily type flower all over in the shade of trees. A few gardeners are privileged to own yellow Clivia plants, first discovered near the Howick Falls. Few realise that the genus contains six recognised species: Miniata with large orange or yellow flowers, C. Nobilis, robusta, gardenii, caulescense and mirabilis (all with small pendulous ericaceous blooms). The annual Clivia Show will be held on Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 09:00 to 14:00 at the Sherwood Garden Centre,

Walker Drive, Port Elizabeth. Admission is R10 with no charge for children under 12, accompanied by an adult. On Saturday at 11:00, a talk on pollinating and propagating Clivia will be done followed by the lucky draw of a flowering size yellow Clivia plant. At 15:00 on Saturday, a demonstration and talk will take place on dividing and repotting Clivia plants, followed by the second lucky draw of a flowering size yellow Clivia plant. Build It helps building local soccer talent One of Build It KwaNobuhle’s invited guests, Pollen Ntlayana, an ex-Bafana Bafana striker, one day suggested a local soccer league be organised for keeping kids off the street. Since then the Build It soccer tournament has been organised for every Saturday. There currently are 29 teams participating in the league event. “With the senior league, we also have several teams playing in a league every weekend for the entire year,” said Michael Mubvanyika, Build It KwaNobuhle: Manager. “The exciting news is that our staff from Kwanobuhle Build It have formed their own team. The 18 members have agreed that they will in 2016 be part of the senior league, which include teams from the KwaNobuhle

and Uitenhage areas.” Besides trophies, cups and clothing Build It has also contributed cash incentives to the senior and junior players.
