he interest in mountain biking in the Eastern Cape is growing fast. This sport has also become popular at primary as well as high school levels, and encouraged by the Spur School Mountain Bike League. The region offers various spectacular off the beaten track cycling routes as well as races. Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in Uitenhage, which is the first school in the region who now has its own track. It also offers

mountain biking as a school sport. The official opening and inaugural mountain bike challenge of the DP MTB track is held today. According to Sampie Marais, organiser of the event and person responsible for the track becoming a reality, the DP mountain bike cycling team will participate in the forthcoming Spur High Schools League national finals. It will be held in Magaliesburg during the first weekend in October. Today’s DP MTB Challenge comprises a 2.5km distance for kids u.10 (starting time 08:30). The 10km & 20km races will both start

at 09:00 and both are open to all mountain bikers. Beginners and cyclists just wanting to enjoy the track are most welcome. Action starts and ends at the DP sports fields at the giant inflatable Klinicare Pharmacies arch. There will be ample parking, rest room facilities, spectator points and refreshments. As it also is National Braai Day, there will be lots of fires and the public are invited to bring along whatever they wish to braai. The race offers lots of lucky prizes and hampers with grand medals to all the finishers as well as to category winners.

“We wish to thank the DP Alma Mater fraternity for their enormous support in having the track developed. This has shown not only that the world has its eyes on South Africa’s film industry as the stature of South African films is starting to receive a tremendous amount of global recognition, but it also gave local film producers new hope. Chosen every 5 years by an international panel, Nelson Mandela Bay is set to play host for the next five years to the most prestige film awards in Africa celebrating the best in the continent’s film industry. The AMAA honours the men and women producing more movies a year than Hollywood. Ironically, the Eastern Cape Film Forum, directed by Nceba Mqolomba of Radio Ya Bantu, this weekend hosts a short film networking and training workshop at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage. Veteran filmmaker Ben Nomoyi, previously said during the EC Film Festival, “The

Eastern Cape lacks writers. Our job as filmmakers is to breathe life into the written word. No written word, no film. I am worried that you still work as individuals in your respective silos limiting the impact that you can make.” As an outcome of the Festival it was decided to host monthly workshops and screenings in the eight respective regions of the province. The first being at Amahlathi Local Municipality in Stutterheim and in Uitenhage on Saturday. “We are looking for local township films. The film industry is large and there are locals taking brilliant short films with their cell phones or even cheap cameras. We want to encourage creativity and quality,” said Mqolomba. Saturday’s programme is free to attend by all interested in the producing of local films. It starts at 08:30 and will end at 18:00 after the screening of a feature film “Mandela, The Man and the Myth”. The workshop will also cover aspects like documentaries, the link between music and film, how to turn an idea into a story, how to write gripping synopses and the role of films in society. )For more information contact Nceba Mqolomba on 083 580 9875.

Rotary project voted one of winning projects world-wide REPORTER

provided to destitute people living in the streets, families living in squatter camps with no electricity and those in need at oldage homes. “More than 1 500 sets of beanies, gloves and scarfs were handed out to school children while 500 baby-grows and vests were purchased for small children and babies. “In total, over 3 000 people benefited, from babies to the aged,” said Klassen. Rathod explained that, “during the coldest months of the year, the temperature in Uitenhage can drop below zero which can be life threatening to homeless people. “They are exposed to the elements as their shelters are not weather-resistant and we wanted to use the opportunity of the ‘Connected to Care’ contest to provide them with warm clothes and blankets as a basic necessity for protection against the cold weather.” According to Klassen, the contribution from BASF has made a significant difference to the local community. “The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South runs this project on an annual basis with donated items from the public, but this only reaches a very small section of the needy community. The donation from BASF has made a lifechanging improvement to the circumstances of more than 3 000 destitute people this winter.”

he Rotary Club of Uitenhage South’s Winter Nights 2015 will be remembered for a long time as being “wonderfully special”. So said President of the Club, Marilyn Klassen who is proud of their being able to provide blankets and warm items to approximately 3 000 people in need. It all started with the Club receiving over 80 blankets and bags full of warm clothing from the public of Uitenhage. This proved to be just the start as BASF, an international chemistry company with locations in SA including Port Elizabeth, celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. As part of their celebrations, the company held a global competition entitled “Connected to Care” whereby staff could submit a charitable proposal. Chandrika Rathod, Quality Manager of BASF South Africa’s Mobile Emissions Catalysts site in Port Elizabeth, and a member of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, submitted the Club’s Winter Nights project for consideration. The project was voted as one of the 150 winning projects world-wide. “This resulted in BASF donating 5 000 Euros to the project. Rotary was able to purchase in excess of 700 blankets which were

Brewery offers more beer and fewer trucks HEILIE COMBRINCK Castle Lite is lagered at -2.5C°, served at -4C° and packaged with South Africa’s first thermochromatic temperature indicator, taking beer drinking to a whole new level of enjoyment. This beer now for the first time, is brewed at Ibayi Brewery, the South African Breweries’ plant in Perseverance. A R80 million new Castle Lite production line was officially launched at the plant last week. This contributed to Ibayi Brewery being the most productive brewery globally. The project, which was signed off at the beginning of 2015, was brought about by an increase in distribution costs as well as the growth of the demand for the Castle Lite brand in the region. According to Brian Versveld, Ibayi Brewery Manufacturing Manager, the brewery runs 24/7,

365 days a year to satisfy the demand for SAB products. The new production line produces a total of 50 000 bottles of Castle Lite per hour, which will also create employment opportunities thus contributing positively to the local economy. “We now brew more than 2 million hectolitres (1 hl equals 100 litres). Last year we were able to brew 1.8 million hl. The new production line means that consumers in the Eastern Cape will get to taste a Castle Lite which is brewed and bottled in their backyard at a quick turnaround time. “The new production line also resulted in 1 640 truck loads no longer having to transport Castle Lite into the Eastern Cape province,” said Versveld. The Ibayi Brewery supplies the coastal region which includes East London, George and Umtata all the way up to Aliwal North.

Entrepreneurial expo for youngsters HEILIE COMBRINCK “Youngsters should stop waiting for people to employ them. They should rather employ themselves by becoming young entrepreneurs.” This is according to Christopher Terblanche, who has been involved in youth development for the past five years at both community as well as educational institutions. “I am confident that if we can bring the unemployment rate down, the crime rate, prison-intake and drug and alcohol abuse will also drop,” said Terblanche, who was born and bred in Uitenhage and studied in Cape Town. Coming from a family who for the past three generations are known as educators in the community, he has a passion to empower the youth and assists them to reach their goals and dreams. For this reason he has established a youth organisaion called Motivated Team Leaders of Tomorrow or MTLT in short. Terblanche also assist youngsters with bursaries, job placement on a small scale

Goodyear to invest millions at tyre plant REPORTER Goodyear South Africa announced it will invest ZAR670 million to increase production of high-value-added (HVA) consumer tyres at its Uitenhage manufacturing plant to drive profitable growth and meet market demands.

Under the proposals, Goodyear has affirmed its intention to confer with the union representatives and employees who are currently working in the MRT area to minimise the impact through offering a variety of alternatives. Subject to consultation, the company expects to be substantially complete with the investment plans by the end of 2016 or early 2017. The company does not anticipate disruption to tyre services or supply during this period.

REPORTER South Africans last week celebrated national Clean-up & Recycling week and were encouraged to clean-up and recycle in their environments. It coincided with the national E-waste collection day as well as International Coastal Clean-up Day. The Dutch Reformed church Uitenhage East partnered with Albertyn Primary and M-zan Technologies to do their green duty for

the town and the environment by having a clean-up around the school and church and also to host an e-waste drop-off on Saturday. “The event was well received within the broader spectrum of the community and many local businesses and community members used the opportunity to drop-off their e-waste at the drop-off point,” said Melinda Labuscagne, organiser of the event. E-waste includes discarded batteries, light bulbs including fluorescent tubes, electrical cables/ wires, small and large household

Celebrating Children’s Dignity Week - making a difference REPORTER Lions Club members from around the world were requested to join in a worldwide week of service to children by celebrating “Children’s Dignity Week”. “The international event is designed to benefit the most vulnerable members of our communities and to help us achieve our ‘Centen-

nial Service Challenge Goal’ of serving 100 million people by 2017,” said Lions District Governor Bokkie Oberholzer. The Uitenhage Lions Club approached the Ubuntu Community Development Solutions (UCDS) NPO which hosts an ongoing project, the Child Clean up Campaign. The project provides underprivileged children and children that live on the street with a hot shower/bath, addresses hygiene issues,

dresses them in clean clothes, feeds and entertains them for the morning. The UCDS, assisted by the Uitenhage Lions Club, Uitenhage Round Table, Community Policing Forum and Ladies from Kwanobuhle provided 60 children with the aforementioned service at the Uitenhage Central Sports Fields. “These children are in a desperate need through no fault of their own and every oppor-

Rotary club’s first female president inducted

arilyn Klassen was recently inducted as the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South and is the club’s first female president in the history of the club. Marilyn joined the club just over 8 years ago and has served the club with dedication and devotion. The unbridled passion with which these volunteers – both local and in other parts of the country – proceed to create new opportunities for current and former learners of the school, is indeed inspirational. Accomplishments and future plans Over the course of its five years of existence there has been a phenomenal increase in the membership of UHPPTA, due in no small part to regular recruitment drives and well-organised and classy functions. Alumni from around the globe have already signed up as members of UHPPTA and the aim is to attract even more of the past pupils of Uitenhage High School and friends of the school to join the organisation. The provision of additional staff ablution facilities and the installation of playground benches were some of the first projects successfully completed by UHPPTA. Furthermore, the organisation has been funding the bulk SMS system being used by the school since 2012. This past year, UHPPTA has also launched its Leadership Development Project, involving groups of senior learners of the school. Bursaries to deserving matrics UHPPTA’s real impact, however, has been the awarding of bursaries to deserving matric learners to further their studies at tertiary institutions, as well as to the top-performing grade 8-11 academic and sport learners of the school. Indeed, nothing demonstrates the UHPPTA objective of ‘touching one life, impacting an

entire society’ more aptly than this particular initiative. To this end, UHPPTA has already forked out an amount in excess of R150 000 since its establishment. The budgeted expenditure for next year amounts to R68 000. A major portion of the revenue to fund this initiative, as well as the other projects referred to above, has come from the unselfish contributions of alumni and generous supporters. Over time, the organisation has also forged close working relationships with institutions including NMMU and Stenden University, to the benefit of the learners of the school. The flagship project of the association is the envisaged erection of a much-needed multifunctional hall at the school. The purpose of this hall would be the conducting of assemblies, conducting of matric exam sessions, hosting of parent meetings and school functions, as well as staging indoor sports events. The hall would also be made available for use by the community. The estimated current cost of the project amounts to R5 million. It is hoped that the recent registration of the organisation as a non-profit organisation (NPO) will assist in accelerating the securing of funds for this project. SPCA emerged victorious against cruelty REPORTER The Uitenhage and District SPCA has emerged victorious with recent rulings in favour of the organisation, in two cruelty cases. “Despite not being able to recover veterinary costs, the SPCA is more than satisfied with the outcome that finally perpetrators of cruelty to animals have been successfully prosecuted and sentenced,” said Deirdre Swift from the SPCA Uitenhage managing board. This is a huge breakthrough with respect to animal cruelty and is due largely to the efforts and perseverance of their Inspector, Deon Combrink. The first case, lodged in January 2014

against an owner for cutting off his dog’s leg after it had been hit by a car, has taken 18 months to resolve. “The owner was found guilty on four counts of animal cruelty and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for five years. He is also required to perform community service for 16 hours per month for the full duration of the sentence. “The dog involved was named ‘Precious’ at the time of the incident, but was renamed ‘Gracie’ when she was adopted a week after her ordeal, by her new owner, Colleen Terblanche,” said Swift. In the second case, the accused admitted to intentionally hitting a German Shepherd female dog on the head with a spade. He was given a R4 000 fine which was reduced to

She was immediately taken to the vet by Deon and has miraculously made a full recovery. Shiska and her puppies were surrendered to the SPCA and are now available for adoption. “Successes such as these are rare, but hopefully a precedent has been set in which there will and should be justice for animals as they are undeserving of such cruelty,” said Swift. The Uitenhage and District SPCA would like to thank all its supporters without whom, these victories could not be achieved.

Sky sports and fun at airfield

The Extreme Fun & Sports Day, which is a run-up to the next Uitenhage Airshow early next year, will be held at the local airfield on Saturday, October 3rd. Extreme sky sports in which to participate or simply enjoy as a spectator include skydiving, paragliding, powerparagliding, gliding and flying. Back on terra firma there will be adrenaline pumping extreme 4x4 action and a VW Beetle Parade. Other activities include

stalls, live music and fun for the kids. “It is not possible at all to combine extreme or adventurous sports with an airshow. It is against regulations and a high risk of having aircraft and sport activities perceived as having a high level of inherent danger,” said Lourens Kruger, organiser of the Extreme Fun & Sports Day as well as the popular Wings & Wheels Festival & Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow. “We are excited about skydive experts EP Skydivers from Grahamstown, Joos Vos and James Williamson, who will join in the ex-

treme fun by offering the public the opportunity to enjoy tandem skydiving.” Extreme sports are activities which more than often involve high speed, height, a high level of physical exertion as well as specialized gear. And spectators and participants can be assured that the above will all be present at the Uitenhage Airfield on October 3rd as from 08:00 when the gates open. Karel Spannenberg from the EC 4x4 Challenge Club will make sure the 4x4 track will be an extreme experience. Once again members of the public, owning 4x4 vehicles, are invited to participate. Entries will be accepted on the day of the event. “Both the airshow and this extreme sports day are organised with the aim to raise funds in developing and upgrading the local airfield. “We have already cleared and secured the

area, improved the runway and are in the process of erecting security lights. There definitely is an increase in air-traffic and we are proud also to have the light sport aircraft and helicopter training at our airfield,” said Kruger. He would not like to let the cat out of the bag, but confirmed that they are looking at the possibilities of hosting a national aerobatic championship at the Uitenhage Airfield. The entrance fee to the Extreme Fun & Sports Day is R30 and R10 for primary school children.
