ROTARY FAMILY HEALTH DAYS
Three days of free health services
HEILIE COMBRINCK This year’s Rotary Family Health Days campaign in South Africa will bring together many volunteers and health care workers across the private and public sector during the three days of free health services. The organisers, during the three days, aim to provide free health screenings and immunisations for up to 75 000 community members at 140 sites around the country. In Uitenhage the Rotary Family Health days will be held on Thursday and Friday, 8 and 9 October at the KwaNobuhle LoveLife Centre at the corner of Ponana Tini and Tize Street. “It is through the dedication and hard work of all partners but particularly the volunteer aspect of many Rotarians on the
ground that has made this campaign such a huge success,” says Sue Paget, Southern Africa Programme Director of Rotary Family Health Days. Some of the health service provided on these days include: TB screening and testing, HIV counselling and testing, immunisation, eye screening, dental care and general health screening (blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes). The volunteers in Uitenhage will be of service to the public from 08:30 to 16:00 on the two days. The effects of the campaign will be felt long after the last volunteers go home. In bringing together so many South Africans from all walks of life to work as one, Rotary Family Health Days contributes to building a legacy of social cohesion that will ultimately improve the quality of life for everyone.

‘Abantsundu’ Despatch invited to meeting Having dealt with many challenges and complaints relating to the livelihood in Despatch, a group of residents decided to convene a meeting with the aim to inform residents regarding good neighbourliness and unity. “This is an effort to form a unity in Despatch. Therefore we wish to have an “Abahlali BaseDespatch town Abantsundu” meeting and invite all our people to attend the meeting to enhance hegemony,” said Sandile Adam, a Despatch resident and convenor of the meeting.
“We have invited and spoken to our new station commander at the Despatch police station as well as to other stakeholders to come and address and enlighten us regarding the town. “We will also be informed by SAPS regarding their strategies to curb crime related matters happening in our area,” said Adam. BIG WALK FOR CANCER
EC has highest incidence of blood cancers HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
he Eastern Cape has the highest incidence of blood cancers in South Africa. Local researchers have confirmed that they are concerned about pollution and especially water pollution allegedly being the instigator of this disease. South Africa has a dire shortage of haematologists to fight this disease. Thus the much acclaimed Dr Neil Littleton, left Cape Town a few years ago, dedicated to tackle this major health issue in the Eastern Cape. Dr Littleton established Igazi Foundation, the only haematological service (non-governmental organisation) in the country, with the aim to improve haematological services and facilities for sufferers, their families and their supporters. It is nationally as well as internationally recognised as a champion of haematology issues, in the struggle for better health care services in South Africa. In support of Igazi Foundation, the 5km Big Walk for Cancer will be held on October 31st. “It is now the single biggest corporate social investment project in the Eastern Cape,” said Dave Tiltmann, managing director of Algoa FM. This radio station has partnered with the EC Department of Health in hosting the annual Big Walk for Cancer. Dr Singilizwe Moko, the Department of Health’s general manager for District Health Services, announced a three year partnership with Algoa FM in hosting the Big Walk for Cancer. Tiltmann challenged businesses to encourage as many as possible of their staff to participate in the Big Walk.
Working with the private sector and the Department of Health in the province, the Igazi Foundation set up the first two dedicated oncology wards in the Eastern Cape. Patients no longer need to travel outside of the province for treatment for blood cancer and other blood-related diseases. People of colour urged to donate bone marrow According to Dr Littleton the funds raised through the Big Walk will be used to support a number of projects including Marrow Masakhane. “This includes the Marrow Masakhane project which aims to encourage more people of colour to register with the Bone Marrow Registry,” said Dr Littleton. “Amazing research work is being done. Funds will be utilized to support a study into the environmental causes of blood cancers in the Eastern Cape. “Other projects to benefit from the Big Walk include training for general practitioners and medical offiers and ongoing upgrades and improvements to the Aloe Igazi wards in the Provincial Hospital.”
Big Walk for Cancer The Big Walk for Cancer will be held on Saturday, October 31st at the Boardwalk in Summerstrand. The entry fee for the 5km walk is R50 and forms are availble from Total Sports stores in PE, Brian Bands, Algoa FM and online at www.algoafm.co.za (See advert on p.14)

Gliding, skydiving and action galore ... HEILIE COMBRINCK Gliding, skydiving, Beetle driving and extreme 4x4 action will have many a spectator in awe on Saturday during the first Extreme Fun & Sports Day hosted at the Uitenhage Airfield. The event is a run-up to next year’s Uitenhage Airshow. “It is not possible at all to combine extreme or adventurous sports with an airshow. It is against regulations and a high risk of having aircraft and sport activities perceived as having a high level of inherent danger,” said Lourens Kruger, organiser of the Extreme Fun & Sports Day as well as the popular Wings & Wheels Festival & Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow. The public will have the opportunity to experience tandem skydiving, gliding and various other adrenaline pumping sports. “We are excited about skydive experts EP Skydivers from Grahamstown, Joos Vos and James Williamson, who will join in the extreme fun by offering the public the opportunity to enjoy tandem skydiving.” Karel Spangenberg from the EC 4x4 Chal-

‘Is it a bird ... or is it a plane?’ REPORTER
who will have the best group to ensure that their side will win? This year’s Melodrama is again brought to town by Round Table Uitenhage 14 and Lions Uitenhage. As in previous years, this year is going to be another event of laughter and fun. The public are invited to join in the fun and support these social clubs in their efforts to make a positive change in the community of Uitenhage and Despatch. There will be a “Peanut Free” evening tomorrow evening (Friday, October 2nd). The rest of the shows are peanut evenings: Saturday (3rd), Friday (9th) and Saturday (10th). All shows start at 19:30, but if the Bokke take to the rugby stage, the shows will start a bit later. Tickets are R70 and there will be a cash bar as well as light meals available. Sakeman Wilfred Impondu, ’n oud-leerder van die skool, het beklemtoon dat oud-leerders ’n al belangriker rol het om te vervul om ’n positiewe verskil in die opvoeding van die jeug te maak. “Dit is belangrik dat ons minderbevoorregte leerders wat oor potensiaal beskik moet ondersteun,” het Impondu gesê. Daniel Pienaar THS is the first school in the region to sport its own mountain bike track and to offer mountain bike riding as an official school sport. An inaugural MTB challenge was held at the track last Thursday. Organisers expected about 50 cyclists, but were surprised when a total of 74 participants entered for the respective challenges. A national trails advocacy organisation aims at improving and promoting trail opportunities around Southern Africa, with one of the major developments to shift racing to school grounds. Developing tracks at schools brings the racing to the kids and places the sport right in the middle of the traditional and mainstream field/court sports. Mini golf day at Despatch A mini golf day will be held at Despatch on Saturday to raise funds to build a locker room for rugby players who use the field and club on Saturdays. The estimated building costs for the lockers are approximately R100 000. The golf day is organised by the Despatch High School Supporters Club, and it will be a 9 hole mini golf course which will be held on the school’s sport ground and there will be a 10th nearest to the hole, that will be at the club itself. “Our goal is to give children of the school support by any means possible to achieve or

be able to achieve their highest potential at academic, sports or cultural levels,” said Melissa Berg. “All finances raised will be used either for supporting a scholar or it will be given back to the school in the sense of upgrading sport facilities for the scholars.” The cost is R80 per player, R320 for a 4 ball and R500 for an advertising/4ball sponsor. SA team wins Spirit of Amarok trophy Team South Africa was crowned as the overall winner of the inaugural International Spirit of Amarok Trophy in Botswana. The five South African teams dominated the competition from the start. Teams from Australia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa took part in the competition and each country was represented by five teams comprising two people. The 20 teams used Amaroks to contest technical and speed challenges over five days. The speed challenge simulated motorsport rally stages with long narrow farm style
paths. Meanwhile, the technical challenge involved extreme off-road conditions with deep sand and hairy inclines and declines. Team South Africa was followed by Team Namibia in the second place. Team Australia and Team Botswana finished third and fourth respectively. The individual category of the competition was won by Alwyn and Melanie Jordaan of Namibia. The couple showed immense concentration and exceptional 4x4 driving skills to win one of the toughest, international amateur 4x4 challenges in Africa.

ix mountain bike riders from Daniel Pienaar THS in Uitenhage and Selborne College in East London respectively will be representing the Eastern Cape at the upcoming Spur Schools Mountain Bike League national finals. Following an exciting 2015 season, fierce competition is expected when the top riders from across South Africa, Namibia and Zim-babwe compete for podium positions and ultimately the coveted title of National Spur School MTB League champions this weekend (2-4 October). Various rider development programmes have been implemented successfully and numerous mountain bike tracks are being built in association with regional municipalities, schools and land owners. According to national league co-ordinator, Meurant Botha of Amarider - a national trails advocacy organisation aimed at improving and promoting trail opportunities around Southern Africa, one of the major developments is the shift to racing on school grounds. Developing tracks at school grounds “Developing these tracks at schools not only brings the racing to the kids, but more importantly places the sport right in the middle of the traditional and mainstream field/court sports. This gives mountain biking greater exposure, relevance and credibility. In 2015, that ratio will be more than 50%,” states Botha. The team from Daniel Pienaar Technical High School - the first school in the region to sport its own mountain bike track and to offer mountain bike riding as an official school sport, finished comfortably first in the Port Elizabeth leg of the league with 147 points.
The riders selected to compete at the finals are Gerrit Rauntenbach, Ruben Schoeman, Marko van der Westhuizen, Laylin van der Merwe, Ryno Gerber and Kobus de Kock. St Dominic Priory finished second with 91 points and Alexander Road High third with 87 points. The winning team in the East Lon-
don leg was from Selborne College. According to Eastern Cape regional coordinator, Charl Joubert, a total of 23 High Schools and 23 Primary Schools participated in the Eastern Cape. Although only high schools can qualify for the finals, the growing contingent of primary

Gravel stages can be viewed along the Swartrivier road starting at the turnoff R102 past the mall to Kabeljous river then on to Zuurbron and Melon Spekboom Road. The Spekboom Lapa restaurant deck can be recommended to view the gravel stage.
