ToyRun: Bikers’ plea to help them help kids

Alumnus dares UHPPTA to dream REPORTER

“One should use one’s circumstances as a catalyst to enable you to realize your dreams.

P

rof. Carlos Bezuidenhout, from the North West University, inspired his audience at UHPPTA’s (Uitenhage High Past Pupil and Teacher Association) glittering annual gala evening.

This humble gentleman from Gerald Smith, Uitenhage was one of the first South Africans to obtain a Phd in Biotechnology in 2002.

“Prof. Bezuidenhout, a visionary leader, was instrumental in establishing a computer room at the school in the late 1990s when he taught at Uitenhage High School,” said Malise Terblanche, UHPPTA marketing & media liaison.

“Even in those early years of technological advancements he had the dream that all learners at Uitenhage High School should become computer literate. The school started with 486 computers sponsored by Goodyear.

His quest for excellence continued when Uitenhage High School acquired Pentium 2s at a later stage.

“Since then this legacy of Prof. Bezuidenhout has grown with giant steps.”

everything starts with one’s dream. Despite experiencing trials and tribulations one should always follow one’s dream.

He believes that one should use one’s circumstances as a catalyst to enable one to realize ones dreams.

A true team player, Prof. Bezuidenhout has not forgotten his roots. He acknowledged the role of his parents, the school, his family and other role players in his success.

He was present at the reunion of the Class of 1978 where the mustard seed of UHPPTA was born. He supports UHS and UHPPTA wholeheartedly.

“In the past five years UHPPTA has assisted learners with bursaries to the tune of R150 000. This practice will be extended in 2016 to include sponsoring two parents at Coega IDZ. This implied that 21 recipients would have received assistance from this initiative.

“Under the auspices of UHS a local law firm has also endeavoured to pay for one learner’s studies from his/her first year to the completion of his/her articles,” said Terblanche.

Prof. Bezuidenhout appealed to alumni from all schools to become involved in the plight of learners by ploughing back into communities.

We are targeting 70 elderly from the Elim Service Centre, Nuwe More service centre and Makukhanye Service Centre,” said Brenda Simon from Age-in-Action Port Elizabeth.

Elderly members will be participating in a fashion parade and the ABCA dancers will entertain guests.

Members from Eleanor Murray Service Centre in Port Elizabeth will be visiting and also provide entertainment. The national chairperson of Age-in-Action, Reverend John Phillips, will be the guest speaker at the event.

Local teacher a heroic teacher finalist REPORTER

She credits the success she enjoys today as a confident, well­rounded learner to her teacher’s belief in her and his constant challenge to her to do her best.

Calitz was nominated by one of his learners, Mthunzikazi Scott, who described herself as a “lost soul” heading for trouble when she met him in her Grade 8 year.

Caltiz encouraged her to join the debating club as a route to her growing, learning and developing. She credits the success she enjoys today as a confident, well-rounded learner to his belief in her and his constant challenge to her to do her best.

A panel of independent judges took on the task of evaluating more than 13 000 nominations by high school and primary school learners from across the country.

They selected 4 finalists in each of the primary and high school categories.

Calitz will soon be joining the other seven

Woolworths Educational Programmes and MySchool have announced Anton Calitz, a teacher at Uitenhage’s Riebeek College Girls’ High, is one of eight finalists in the 2015 Teacher’s Day competition.

The annual event, now in its 5th year, promotes UNESCO’s World Teacher’s Day on 5th October by inviting South African children to recognise and appreciate teachers who have made a life-changing difference to them.

A record number of South African learners from across the country entered the competition with this year’s theme, ‘Celebrate the real heroes this Teacher’s Day’.

“For each full bottle received, Timber Solutions will donate R1 to an organisation providing shelter to women and children affected by domestic violence,” said Labuscagne.

Plastic will be used by the local firm, Timber Solutions, in the manufacturing of their recycled plastic furniture.

Ilinge Primary’s 50th year to be celebrated

The 50th anniversary of Ilinge Primary school in Uitenhage will be celebrated on 22 and 23 October. In its 50th year a new principal was appointed namely Mlungisi Matana.

As a person with vision, Matana is determined to take the school to new levels. His passion in professional development especially in ICT, extra-curricular activities and involvement in CAPS training will undoubtedly boost the morale of his staff.

Breast cancer survivor and Reach for Re-

covery volunteer Josey Nonkonyana, recalls the day that changed her life forever.

Josey was walking down the high street, wearing a pink breast-cancer-signifying ribbon, when a man approached her and asked for help for his ailing 16-year-old daughter.

His wife, he said, had died of breast cancer three years earlier.

She followed him to an informal settlement nearby and found the teenage girl in terrible pain, and – judging by the discolouration of the skin on her young breast – already in an advanced stage of breast cancer.

The teenager died on the way to hospital, on the back seat of Josey’s car.

Get ready (and pink) for Big Walk for Cancer

gazi Foundation, the only haematological service (non-governmental organisation) in the country, was established by Dr Neil Littleton with the aim to improve haematological services and facilities for sufferers, their families and their supporters.

It is nationally as well as internationally recognised as a champion of haematology issues, in the struggle for better health care services in South Africa.

In support of Igazi Foundation, the 5km Big Walk for Cancer will be held on October 31st. Algoa FM has partnered with the EC Department of Health in hosting the annual Big Walk for Cancer.

Businesses are encouraged to enter as many as possible of their staff to participate in the Big Walk. Working with the private sector and the Department of Health in the province, the Igazi Foundation set up the first two dedicated oncology wards in the Eastern Cape. Patients no longer need to travel outside of the province for treatment for blood cancer and other bloodrelated diseases. )The Big Walk for Cancer will be held on Saturday, October 31st at the Boardwalk in Summerstrand. The entry fee for the 5km walk is R50 and forms are availble from Total Sports stores in PE, Brian Bands, Algoa FM and online at www.algoafm.co.za

Future of health summit highlights disease prevention REPORTER South Africa needs to radically improve its disease prevention efforts to avert a rapid escalation in ill health, says Dr Peter Bond, chief medical officer at Old Mutual.

He singles out obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) as areas of particular concern in South Africa.

South Africa has the highest overweight and obesity rate in sub-Saharan Africa, according to The Lancet medical journal, and that’s driving an upsurge in Type 2 diabetes, he says.

“Not a single country has managed to re-

duce its obesity rate in the past three decades, and obesity-driven diabetes across sub-Saharan Africa will double in 20 years, according to the World Health Organisation,.”

He adds that this rising rate will also have massive implications for the cost of life cover.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills 200 people in this country each day: the equivalent of 13 minibus-taxi loads of people per day, while the rate of premature deaths from it is expected to increase by 40% by 2030. An average of 130 heart attacks and 240 strokes occur each day.

It is with these alarming statistics in mind that Old Mutual, a sponsor of the Future of

Health Summit, is keen to raise awareness and stimulate debate around a healthy approach to living.

A range of experts on the topic of healthy living will gather in Nelson Mandela Bay on 22 October to share their insights, explore the latest thinking on managing health, and discuss the myths and facts about sugar, banting and low carb high fat diets.

‘Ek sal aanhou stap om ander te help’ Dit het hom byna twee maande geneem om van Kaapstad na Port Elizabeth te stap en dié staptog sal nog ’n jaar duur – maar as hy ander geamputeerdes hierdeur kan help, is dit die moeite werd.

Só het Paul Steyn (28), wat reeds nagenoeg 1 000 km te voet – sy een been is ’n kunsbeen – afgelê het vertel. Hy het op 3 Augustus met ’n waentjie, sy broer Francois (16) en die fotograaf Janus Gunter op ’n 7 000 km-staptog deur die land se nege provinsies vertrek.

“Ek het voorheen al van die Baai na die

Kaap gestap, maar dié is my verste staptog tot dusver – en ek wil aanhoudend meer doen om mense wat ledemate verloor het te help.”

Hy het as tiener sy voet verloor in ’n fratsongeluk met ’n trekker en grassnyer, waarna sy regterbeen onder die knie geamputeer is. Dít het hom egter nie teruggehou in sy kruistog vir bewusmaking nie, en hy het die Paul Steyn-stigting in 2012 begin.

“Ek sal aanhou stap met die oog daarop om geld in te samel vir mense wat nie self kunsledemate kan bekostig nie,” het hy vertel.

“Dié ledemate kan tussen R50 000 en

R100 000 kos, maar gelukkig kon ek al 10 mense deur my fondsinsameling help. Met my huidige staptog wil ek probeer om tot R20 miljoen in te samel.”

Om dié teiken te bereik gebruik Steyn sy rustyd in groter dorpe om as spreker by skole

en kerke op te tree. “Daar is baie mense wat hulp nodig het, en ek druk myself om alles in my vermoë vir hulle te doen, eerder as om te rus.”

Die staptog sal op 27 September 2016 eindig by die V&A Waterfront in Kaapstad.

Animal welfare got a recent boost when Bridgestone South Africa donated a set of tyres for a bakkie used by the National Council for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The bakkie is used by the NSPCA’s wildlife unit as a ‘disaster vehicle’ to respond to animal emergencies.

“We were very pleased to assist when the NSPCA approached us,” said Bridgestone’s General Manager of Marketing, Tony Burns.

“The NSPCA does valuable work, often under difficult conditions and with limited funding, and we were glad to be able to keep their disaster vehicle on the move.”

Bridgestone has been involved in animal welfare and conservation activities for several years. One of the beneficiaries has been the Cape Leopard Trust which not only focuses on the protection of these large cats, but also plays a major role in wildlife educa-

tion and raises awareness among children.

“One of our ongoing conservation activities is our involvement with the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s ‘roadkill’ project,” Burns commented.

“This fascinating initiative started with a pilot project involving the number of animals killed by traffic, and then progressed to a full study in the Pilanesberg.”

The roadkill study showed that driver distraction was a major contributor to roadkills, with the researchers placing fake animals on the road and then noting the circumstances under which drivers either avoided or drove over them.

The study is being rolled out to several other locations nationwide, and the roadkill team is currently busy with a survey in Addo.

“We call on the public to join us in assisting organisations which promote the welfare and conservation of animals,” Burns concluded.

VWSA vehicles meet all the legal requirements

There has been extensive international media coverage relating to irregularities in Nitrogen oxide emission values measured during dynamometer regarding the emission standard Euro 5 of Volkswagen diesel vehicles fitted with the type EA189 Euro 5 engines.

In an official statement issued by Volkswagen Group South Africa, Matt Gennrich, General Manager: Communications Volkswagen Group South Africa said, “in South Africa the compliance standard is EU 2.

“All Volkswagen Group diesel vehicles of the type EA 189 retailed in South Africa, that is, Volkswagen passenger, Audi, Light and Medium Commercial Vehicles comply with

this standard for Nitrogen oxide emissions.

“We want to further confirm that the bench mode in the software does not affect negatively the CO2 values.

“Our vehicles accordingly comply with the published CO2 values.

“Furthermore they are technically safe and roadworthy.

“We would like to apologise to our custom-

ers for any uncertainty that may have been created over this issue and want to assure our valued customers, that their vehicles meet all the legal requirements in terms of which the National Regulator approved the sale for use in South Africa.

“There is therefore no action required on either the part of the customer or our dealers,” said Gennrich.

“Dié 4x4-dag groei elke jaar en dit is wonderlik. Ons het al baie navrae gekry oor wanneer viertrekkers vanjaar hierdie roete kan kom aanpak,” sê Donovan Whitehead, wat saam met sy vrou Sunelle dié famliedag organiseer.

Voertuie word in groepe ingedeel om dit makliker te maak om die roete sonder enige onnodige oponthoud te voltooi. Elke groep het iemand wat die voortou vat en daar is kategorie-pryse.

“Ons wys niemand weg nie, maar opgeboude voertuie gaan geen voordeel hê wat pryse betref nie.

“Hier is pragtige fynbos en terwyl mense op die 4x4 roete ry kan hulle die plantegroei, bome (geelhout en vele ander spesies) besigtig. Die roete gaan ook verby asemrowende kranse en rotsagtige oorhange. Dit is regtig ‘n baie mooi roete.

“Fynbos gee ook natuurlik die heerlikste heuning en ons het so ongeveer 300 heuningkaste op die plaas.”

Daar is ook ‘n standhoudende fontein of The Meadows waarvan die water gebottel word. Besoekers kan van dié gebottelde vars-water uit die fontein koop.

Inskrywings om op hierdie viertrekroete in die Elandsriviervallei te gaan sluit op 24 Oktober. Die koste is R200 per voertuig wat deelneem en R20 per voertuig waarvan die besoekers slegs die dag in die buitelug in piekniekstyl wil geniet.

Daar sal stalletjies wees met verskillende kosse, ‘n biertent (waar heuningkarrie geniet kan word), plaasprodukte, heuning, handwerk, kaas en vermaak vir die klein-
