alan Steenkamp, hoofseun van die HTS Daniel Pienaar, is onlangs in Johannesburg aangewys as die algehele wenner in die finale rondte van Eskom se nasionale expo vir jong wetenskaplikes.

“Wat die prestasie baie besonders maak is die feit dat daar ongeveer 17 000 deelnemers landwyd was wat aan die streeksuitdunne deelgeneem het,” het Nico Claassen, prinsipaal van HTS Daniel Pienaar gesê. Na die streeksuitdunne is 570 deelnemers na die finale rondte in Johannesburg genooi. In die finale rondte is 360 projekte beoordeel en by sommige projekte was meer as een deelnemer betrokke. By die prysuitdeling, na die beoordeling, is die gesogte “Dr. Derek Gray Memorial Award” vir die algehele wenner aan Steenkamp oorhandig. Hy het ‘n volle beurs vir ingenieursstudies aan die universiteit van Pretoria ontvang. Steenkamp is ook genooi na die internasionale jeug wetenskap-seminaar wat in Stockholm, Swede, gehou word vanaf 4 tot 11 Desember. Daarna sal hy ook die Nobelprysuitdeling in Stockholm bywoon. “Die konsep van Malan se inskrywing was ‘n karretjie (Lightning Strom 2) wat met ‘n lig en videokamera toegerus is. Dié karretjie kan via internet, vanaf enige plek in die wêreld beheer word om beeldmateriaal te neem. Dit word geaktiveer deur ‘n rekenaar of selfoon,” het Claassen verduidelik. Dit is ‘n ideale toestel om ’n ogie te hou oor belange terwyl jy elders is. “Die personeel, leerders ouergemeenskap van DP is baie trots op hierdie uitsonderlike prestasie van Steenkamp. Veral omdat dit die eerste keer in die geskiedenis is dat hierdie toekenning aan ‘n deelnemer gemaak is, wat die eerste keer aan die Expo deelgeneem het,” het Claassen gesê. Steenkamp gaan in 2016 megatroniese ingenieurswese by Tukkies studeer.

‘Organised Chaos’ concert in aid of Drostdy workshop HEILIE COMBRINCK Organised Chaos, a trio of local singers/comedians are not only amusing and talented, but also dedicated when it come to assist where there is a dire need in the community.

Be on the watch out for them tomorrow! Shauen van der Berg, Gerard Klerk and Lindsay Klerk, will be at popular shopping centres in Uitenhage. This is to promote their show of tomorrow evening, in aid of the financially stricken Drostdy Workshop for Mentally Disabled Persons. “The name Organised Chaos derives from the fact that we love to surprise our audiences. We can make them laugh and then at any moment, unexpectedly bring a tear to their eyes,” said Gerard Klerk. Gerard together with his brother Lindsay, are well-known Senior Traffic Officers at the Uitenhage Traffic Department, whilst Shauen is the Bakery Manager at Pick ’n Pay at the Baywest Mall. “God blessed us and it now is time for us

to also bless others in our community. We care for our community and enjoy being of assistance wherever needed,” said Gerard. Tickets are R10 per person and the show starts at 19:00 in the church hall of DR Church De Mist, Uys Street, Uitenhage. Doors open at 18:00 and the public are invited to come and enjoy light meals prior to the show. A soft collection will be held during Organised Chaos’ show. Drostdy Workshop takes care of about 85 mentally disabled persons, keeping them busy during week days doing woodwork, handwork and baking. According to Yvonne Barkhuizen, Manager of the Workshop, they do receive funding from the government, but it is inadequate to financially keep all the wheels on the roll. Therefore they hugely depend on fund-raising efforts and the support of the public and social clubs. Drostdy Workshop’s largest fund-raising, the annual Christmas Biscuit sale starts soon. The public are invited to enjoy the Organised Chaos concert tomorrow evening at the DR Church De Mist church hall.

It is National Invasive Species week. A first for South Africa and the aim of this week is to educate and increase awareness regarding the importance of controlling alien invasive plants and animals. Invasive species threaten our water supply and South Africa’s unique biodiversity. Not only do invasives displace indigenous plants, they also alter the habitat for wildlife, and impact negatively on ecosystems on which people, plants and animals depend on for their existence and well-being. South Africans are encouraged to during National Invasive Species week, remove invasive plants from their gardens and neighbourhoods and by dumping biomass at the correct waste facilities. A local activity that needs as much support (and hands and chainsaws) as possible is the Baakens Trust’s alien hack to remove invasive plants in the Baakens River Valley. It will be held on Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00. All interested are to meet (08:45) at the Baakens Trail information board at the upper end of Alan Drive, Walmer Downs, near the Badminton Hall. Otherwise, walk or drive to the hack site behind Aurora using the dirt track next to the Municipal Nursery. Reunion for former railway employees On the 24th October the place to be for exrailway employees will be at the PE Model Locomotive Society Club at Stella Londt Drive where the Eastern Cape Railway Reunion will take place. “The event will give former ‘Spoories’ the opportunity to meet again after many years and share all the great days of the past when the Railways were still Railways,” said Chris de Vos, an organiser of the event. “Those were the days when those working for the South African Railways had pride in their jobs, whether callman, porter or general manager. “When the privilege of having a job came first, when the word ‘strike’ was almost unknown in the rail worker’s vocabulary.” At the miniature steam train club in Port Elizabeth, there will be five steam trains and a diesel locomotive in operation. “It was decided to host it at this venue to give retirees the smell of smoke and sound of ‘puffing billies’ once again.” Some former train drivers will be given the opportunity to get behind the controls of the shiny and proud “little ladies” (locomotives have always been named after and referred to as ladies). Entrance will be free, but train rides of

five minutes will cost R5 for all. Pension case update Advocate Johan Alberts will be the main speaker at the event. He will give an update on the 60 000 Transnet Pensioners’ case and this could give all the attendees the opportunity to get a progress report and also ask questions in this regard. The legal team acting on behalf of the pensioners was recently bolstered when Adv. Wim Trengove SC, a renowned and highly regarded litigation specialist, joined the team. Uitspandag vol vermaak op Wolwefontein HEILIE COMBRINCK Wolwefontein lê in die middel van die Witteberg-kwartsietkom se voue, daar waar die Klein Winterhoekbergreeks miljoene jare gelede sy skerp rugkant uit die aarde opgestoot het. Dit is ook die plek waar menige moeë reisiger, geselshonger boer en dors swerwer mekaar raakgekuier het. Net daar op die stoep van die Wolwefontein Hotel. Die hotel is vol stories en die einde van die maand is daar wéér ’n gesellige “storie” wanneer ’n uitspandag daar gehou word. Een van die aktiwiteite is ’n potjiekoskompetisie en die wenner gaan wegstap met ’n 50% afslag-treinkaartjie vir een van Rovos Rail se luukse treinreise. Wolwefontein Hotel, met sy stoepuitsig oor die Klein Winterhoekbergreeks, het gestalte gekry danksy die Jood Hymie Glazer. Buiten dié hotel, het die Glazers ook ’n algemene handelswinkel, ander eiendomme en ’n paar plase in die omgewing besit. Eerste skolier as skaakarbiter Caro Swanepoel, ’n graad 12leerder in Hoërskool Brandwag, is die eerste skolier in die Oos-Kaap wat as skaakarbiter gekwalifiseer het. Sy is al ’n dekade lank ’n OP skaakspeler en een van Brandwag se top akademiese presteerders met erekleure vir akademie en verskeie ander toekennings op haar kerfstok. Caro was een van die 20 finaliste in die Herald se ma-triek-van-die-jaar-kompetisie. Sy is ook ’n lid van die leerlingraad, die Alpha Leo Club en Interact en is die redakteur van Brandwag se skoolkoerant.

Strelitzia’s soccer on the rise

=A jubilant Strelitzia High School soccer team. Strelitzia High school and Victoria Park participated in the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament in Bloemfontein which was attended by 20 of the top soccer playing schools in the country. The football was of a high standard and was closely watched by many scouts as well as SABC soccer commentator and Nedbank Ke Yona coach, Mike Sporo Mangena. Strelitzia finished 3rd and Victoria Park 6th, both teams representing the Nelson Mandela Bay very well. The results of Strelitzia’s group matches were as follows: Strelitzia 1-0 Kloof High of KZN, Strelitzia 4-1 The Glen of Gauteng, Strelitzia 4-1Tsotseletso High of Bloemfontein, Strelitzia 0-1 Westville of KZN. Strelitzia finished as runners-up in their group and had to play the strong team of Waterstone College in the quarter finals.
