Dwelms en afwesige leerders knak skole ODETTE KEMP

ie Oos-Kaapse onderwysdepartement is vandeesweek oor die vingers getik oor die toestande by skole in Uitenhage en Despatch, waar oorvol klaskamers, onderwyser-tekorte en vandalisme reeds jare aan die orde van die dag is. Dít volgens ‘n skok-verslag van die provinsiale wetgewer, wat Dinsdag aan inwoners van Nelson Mandelabaai bekendgestel is. Die wetgewer se staande komitee vir onderwys het vroeër vanjaar ses skole in die metro, waaronder die John Walton-hoërskool en die RH Godlo primêre skool in Uitenhage en Despatch Primêr, besoek. Hul bevindinge het talle probleme, wat ook dwelm-misbruik en handboek-tekorte insluit, by die skole uitgelig. By John Walton is die departement beveel om onmiddellik in te gryp en opknappingswerk uit te voer. “Die skool is in 1971 gebou en moet dringend opgeknap word om te verhoed dat die geboue inmekaartuimel,” het
Fundile Gade, ANC-LPW, gesê. “Sou dit gebeur, sal dit jare neem om die skool te herbou omdat die departement oor ‘n baie lang prioriteitslys beskik.” Gebrekkige toiletgeriewe, leerders wat dwelms op die skoolgronde verkoop en onderwysers wat gereeld op Maandae en Vrydae afwesig is, tel ook onder dié skool se probleme. “Die distrikskantoor moet in noue verband met die skool saamwerk. Daar moet streng opgetree word teen onderwysers wat afwesig is sonder goedkeuring,” het Gade gesê. Hoë afwesigheidsgetalle en dwelmmisbruik is ook aangemeld by Despatch Primêr, wat boonop oorkant ‘n kroeg geleë is. “Die departement moet met die drankraad skakel, met die oog daarop om bystand aan die skool te verleen dat die kroeg so spoedig moontlik verwyder word.” Dié skool moet ook dringend omhein word, het Gade gesê – veral nadat Siviwe Dingani, ‘n gr. 1-leerder, in Julie vanjaar voor dié skool doodgery is. “Die omheining sal ook help om vandalisme en inbrake te bekamp.” Vandalisme en inbraaksyfers is ook van-
jaar hoog by RH Godlo in Kwanobuhle, terwyl die skool se infrastruktuur “grootskaalse opknapping” benodig. “Boonop het die skool sedert Januarie nog geen handboeke ontvang nie,” het Gade gesê. “Onderwysers moet weekliks na naburige skole gaan om afskrifte te maak.” Gade het die departement beveel om ‘n verslag aan die komitee voor te lê om dié handboek-sloer te verklaar. “Die departement moet ook sy werwingsbeleid verander en verseker dat alle poste geadverteer word, aangesien 141 posvlak 1-onderwysposte steeds in die distrik vakant is. ‘n Verslag hieroor moet binne 30 dae na die aanneming van hierdie verslag aan die komitee voorgelê word.” Oorvol klaskamers – ‘n probleem wat by al drie skole voorkom – was ook op die komitee se lysie. “Die meeste van die skole in die distrik is oorvol, en die distrik benodig mobiele klaskamers ten einde hierdie uitdaging die hoof te bied. Die departement moet verseker dat die distrik van mobiele klaskamers voorsien word om dié tekort op te los.”

Bikers’ Animal Run held in aid of SPCA

There is an entrance fee of R30, which if you pay, will entitle you to a metal SPCA Animal Run badge, entry into the lucky draws as well as entry into the games where you can win prizes. “There are games for the public and then also for the bikers - using their bikes in the games - so it should be entertaining,” said Swift. )Entry fee is not compulsory. There will be stalls, good food, live music and bar facilities. The festivities start at 08:30.

It is well supported by the biking community and this year we hope that the public will support as well,” said Deirdre Swift from the Uitenhage & District SPCA managing board. In the past it has been held at the SPCA, but this year there will be a change of scenery as it will be at the Iron Legion Club House in Sellick Street. There will be a bike procession leaving from the Penford Engen Convenience Centre in Graaff Reinet Road at 09:00. All participating bikers are to meet at the parking area at 08:30. They will travel down Church Street, turn left into Caledon Street, then right into Market Street and all the way down to Sellick Street. So for anyone

Request for donation of wheelchairs and walkers The Uitenhage Lions Club is being inundated with requests for wheelchairs and walkers from the local communities of Uitenhage and Despatch. High age profiles have contributed to an increase in people suffering from strokes, heart attacks, diabetes and amputations. Additional contributing factors include
both unused wheelchairs and walkers, even if damaged, as they are prepared to have the appliances repaired at their cost for the benefit of the community. The Uitenage Lions Club donates appliances to those in need at no cost, but the appliance remains the property of the Club. “This means that the appliance can be recycled within the community to those in need,” said Murphy. )Therefore the Lions appeal to the community and local businesses to please support the project and contact Lion Robbie Effting on 072 217 4798. Die Griekwapsalms “Hie Neffens My” en “Die Rooi Rok” is enkele van die vele gewilde Afrikaanse lieflingmusiek van Afrikoon Randall Wicomb, wat vir lank nog luisteraars sal bekoor. Hy is vanjaar deur bekende plaaslike radiopersoonlikheid Veronica Fourie, vir ’n ATKV-toekenning genomineer om as ikoon van die Afrikaanse taal en kultuur beskou te word. En Wicomb het dit welverdiend ontvang. “Randall is tans baie siek aan kanker, wat versprei het. Hy dra ’n oogklap omdat hy sig in sy een oog verloor het weens die siekte. Randall het geen mediese fonds nie en sukkel soos baie ander kunstenaars, wat nie kan bekostig om siek te raak nie,” sê Veronica Fourie. Sy biografie “Kleur, my lewe, my lied” is in September vanjaar bekendgestel. Hy is tans in die Oos-Kaap waar hy op verskeie dorpe optree om die boek bekend te stel en op te tree om sodoende sy fondse te sterk sodat hy sy mediese onkostes kan dek.

=The pollution of the Kat Canal in Uitenhage is horrendous, especially after the recent rain. Some residents of the areas adjoining the canal use it as their dumping site. The polluted canal flows directly into the Swartkops River, close to Nivens Bridge, and from there to the sea at Amsterdam Hoek. Lekkerste verjaardag op Despatch Italiaanse pizzas en pastas was nog nooit so lekker op Despatch as by Panarottis Pizza Pasta restaurant nie! En dit raak al hoe lekkerder. Want eienaar Pieter Kruger glo aan innovering en die uittoets van nuwe pizza-resepte. Daarom was hy onlangs een van Suid-Afrika se slegs sewe finaliste in die Panarottis Master Pizza Challenge 2015. Gaan loer gerus op You Tube of Facebook om te sien wat se lekker pizzas Pieter tydens die kompetisie gemaak het! Panarottis Despatch is die enigste konsessie restaurant op die dorp en vier eerskomende naweek hul eerste bestaansjaar. ’n Verjaardag is ’n lekker ding, maar by Panarottis is dit besonders lekker, want pizzas en pastas gaan die naweek spotgoedkoop wees. Pieter is ’n sakeman wat se hart op die regte plek klop. Hy hou van lekker kos, glo in die ontwikkeling van sy personeel, dat kliënte jou beste bate is en dat betrokkenheid in jou dorp se gemeenskap ononderhandelbaar is. “Jy moet jou kliënte ken. Gesels met hulle, sê meer as net hallo en koebaai. Wéét ook dat mense waarde soek vir hulle geld,” sê Pieter Hy het op 18, pas uit matriek, by Spur begin
werk. Op 23, in 2002, het hy sy eerste restaurant gekoop, naamlik Die Dros in Oos Londen. Drie jaar later, op 27 April 2007, het die Krugers die Spur op Uitenhage oopgemaak en was Pieter die eienaar van sy eerste Spur. Wanneer dit kom by teruggee aan die gemeenskap, is Pieter se besighede die borge van verskeie sportgeleenthede en skole. In een van sy borgskappe van ’n rugbyspan, het pizzas as motivering gedien. Lions to spoil seniors with supper The Uitenhage Lions Club welcomes 250 of the town’s senior citizens over the age of 65 years to its annual Seniors Christmas Supper. This year there are a few changes to the event. Firstly it will be held on Saturday, November 7th at 17:00 and not as usual during the week. Secondly there will be a change of venue as it will be hosted at the Moth Hall in Rich Street. All those wishing to attend the event are re-

Drie generasies van slagters Eintlik dateer die familie se slaghuis- en sakevernuf veel verder terug. Retief en Lydia Kolesky het reeds in 1952 die Mosel Slaghuis geopen as-ook ’n vleisfabriek. In 1956 begin hulle die slaghuis in Markstraat., Bou voort op familietradisie Zettie van Loggerenberg en haar drie kinders, Tossie, Roche en Lydie is aan bestuur van die familie-slaghuise. “Betroubare personeel, goeie diens en
kwaliteit vleise is die wenresep vir ’n slaghuis om die toets van dekades en generasies te deurstaan,” sê Zettie. Despatch baseball too good for CT side T
he Van der Stel Baseball Club from Cape Town completed its tour of the Metro and locked heads against local clubs like VWBC, the combined Gelvan/Pirates club and Despatch Red Sox. In the penultimate match, Despatch Red Sox was just too good for the Western Cape side. The combination of Daniel Coetzer, pitcher, and Keith Grobler, catcher, worked well for Red Sox, with Coetzer allowing 5 hits and hitting a homerun which changed the game in Red Sox’s favour. Other standout performers were young incumbent, Dylan le Roux, who pitched the closing frame against Van der Stel Baseball Club. Morné Minnie and Gertjie Coetzer also performed well for Red Sox on the day.
Dennis Transell, who umped the game, said it was a very nice game with Van der Stel fighting back till the end; however, Red Sox was victorious scoring 8-6. Baseball returns to Despatch on Sunday, where defending champions, Red Sox will take on Pirates at 14:00 and VW Baseball Club will take on Park Tigers at 12:00. All junior games will start at 09:00. Youngsters of the ages u/10, u/12 and u/15 are all invited to come and play ball. Entrance is free and all are welcome. An u/10 Pirates team recently completed a tour to George where they played against 5 sides from South Western Districts and Western Province. They ended up winning 3 of the 5 games and a lot of experience was

Great selection for open water swimmers The adventure province once again shows its supremacy with its choice of competitive events available for open water swimmers (OWS) as the new Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics’ (NMBA) sanctioned EC Swim Series gets under way on Sunday, 1st November at Settlers Dam just outside Grahamstown. The EC Swim Series will become the only sanctioned OWS event in the Eastern Province where registered swimmers can obtain Swimming South Africa (SSA) qualifying times.
