Comedy show filmed in U’hage REPORTER

t’s no joke! In a first for the Eastern Cape, a popular local improvised comedy show is being filmed for television in Uitenhage. The show, “Whose Line PE” is based on the American TV show called “Whose Line Is It Anyway”. Reports about the show in the press and on social media led producer Malcolm Ramsay of Pixellife Productions to approach the WhoseLinePE team to film the show for broadcast. Public thanked for superb support of Round Table project Round Table Uitenhage 14 for the 12th consecutive year held its annual Winter Knights clothing and blanket collection, which forms part of one of Round Table Southern Africa’s largest national projects. “The success of this campaign lies in the passion of the Winter Knights who serve their community by putting their hearts and souls into it,” said Jacques le Roux from Round Table Uitenhage 14. During a winter night, the Round Tablers, dressed in t-shirts and shorts, braved the cold

around a fire. “The reason behind this is to show the public that we experience ourselves, the cold dreary nights which a massive part of our community has to go through every winter night. “We were very fortunate this year, as the management of Despatch Superspar assisted us in the collection of clothing and blankets. They held their own Winter Knights evening and collected clothing and blankets on behalf of Round Table.”

The Round Tablers joined them in their efforts to collect clothes till midnight. About 12 bags of clothes were collected on the night. During mid-winter, the members of Round Table Uitenhage 14 held their official Winter Knights at Engen Convenience Centre Penford in Uitenhage. They were there until midnight and collected another 14 bags of clothes and blankets. “Afterwards we still received a number of phone calls from people in the community who wanted to donate clothes and blankets,

which we collected.” In total they collected more than 30 bags of clothes. All the clothes and blankets received were sorted to ease the distribution thereof. “We wish to thank the communities of Despatch and Uitenhage as well as Despatch Superspar for their assistance and generosity in donating the clothes and blankets,” said Le Roux. The clothing and blankets were distributed to UCDS, Solidarity Helpende Hand in Despatch and the CMR in Uitenhage.

According to Christine Kuch from the The National Council of SPCAs, “The SPCA does not enforce the Laws relating to the use of fireworks. The regulations, both local and national, are watertight. “The Explosives Act is enforced by the SAPS to whom matters of concern need to be reported. This Act covers sale of fireworks as well as issues relating to the discharge of fireworks in public places. Local by-laws – which vary - regulate the discharge of fireworks on private property. “In some Municipalities, permits are required, in other areas there is dispensation for Diwali between specified times.” Be aware of pets’ sensitivity Anyone with an animal is requested to be responsible and to ensure the animal’s safety and comfort. The hearing of animals is far more acute and sensitive than the hearing of a human. If a dog can hear a grasshopper eat, imagine what a firework sounds like.

Deputy minister to attend Ilinge’s 50th anniversary REPORTER Ilinge Primary School in Uitenhage is celebrating its 50th year of educational empowerment today and tomorrow. Antidrug block party A party with a different vibe, a drug awareness block party, will be hosted by the newly elected executive committee of Mabo Foundation, a Uitenhage based dependency support group. It will be held next to the Rosedale Clinic on Sunday, starting at 14:00. Mabo Foundation is a non-government organisation that renders support and counselling at the Kamesh SAPS Centre. Ganief “Mabo” Williams, CEO and founder of Mabo Foundation says, “the youth are looking for a credible message that they can identify with. The trying task of reducing the use of drugs and alcohol at schools is made all the more daunting as a result of the lack of credible and effective awareness drives and initiatives.” Local artists will be showcasing their talents in singing, dancing, rapping and poetry at the block party. SANParks, supported by First National Bank and Total South Africa, recognises deserving individuals, departments and parks at the Kudu Awards annually through awarding them Chief Executive Awards. It is awarded based on performance during the previous financial year – 2014/15. Two staff members from Addo Elephant National Park were rewarded for their hard work and dedication. Receptionist Lee-Marque Jansen received the award for Best Customer Service. Jansen is the subject of many compliments received from guests for his friendliness, helpfulness and willingness to assist whomever and wherever he can. Marine Senior Section Ranger, Roget Fox, walked away with the award for Excellent Performance in the Workplace. Organisers are gearingup for annual street carnival It’s that time of the year again. Jacaranda trees are in full bloom and Rotarians from the Uitenhage Rotary Club in full swing, organising the programme for the annual Uitenhage Street Carnival. It will be held on November 27 and 28 and there will once again be various artists performing throughout the weekend. Well over 150 stalls will be trading at the carnival. There will be plenty to do for the kids including a playland, train rides, face painting, paintball and various other activities. Life-sized cartoon characters, as well as a magician, will roam the street. “As usual the emphasis will be on providing a platform for local artists to perform. Les Mc Master, Director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), says there is in fact a demand for skilled motor technicians around the world. “With vehicles becoming increasingly more complex, workshop technicians, or mechanics as we know them, are expected to be able to operate at more and more complex and technical levels. Mc Master says problem-solving is a vital skill if you are considering a career as a mechanic. “Maths and computer science are good subjects to do if you have an interest in this field,” he says. Most mechanics will start out working for a workshop and get several years of practical experience before considering venturing off to open their own business. A large number of qualified technicians go on to own their own independent workshops while the others work for dealerships, workshops, parts and supplies retailers, and so on. Mc Master highly recommends upskilling for those already in the industry. “Advanced skills are in demand. There are some excellent on-the-job courses available, such as MIWA’s Master Technician Programme, which will take your formal training to the next level. “There’s no doubt that we are an industry seeing massive change in technology. Willow Dam Garden Centre is known for its involvement when it comes to raising funds in aid of breast cancer and especially the Uitenhage Reach For Recovery breast cancer support group. This year they will be hosting the wellknown television gardening personality Tanya Visser, who also is the editor of The Gardener/Die Tuinier magazine. All funds raised will be towards the Reach For Recovery group. The public are requested please to support this event as it is a way that Reach For Recovery Uitenhage, a non-profit organisation for breast cancer only, can raise funds for their Ditto project. “Ditto is to support women who have lost a breast as a result of cancer. No woman should go without a prosthesis after losing a breast,” said Estelle Botha from Reach For Recovery Uitenhage. Estelle wishes to see as many as possible of the women - who through the past eight years have been visited by Reach For Recovery volunteers - attending the event. Sibling fights are taken to a totally different level in the Dolley family of Uitenhage. These kids are known for their karate performances and achievements. Between the four of them they have 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dan Black belts. These siblings train under the guidance of Sensei Riaan Le Roux (6th Dan) (Chairperson WJKA South Africa) at the Uitenhage Karate Academy. The eldest, Jameelah (20) (3rd Dan) has her own dojo where she teaches the art and she also has her national colours and was selected to represent the country in Netherlands this year but could not go for religious reasons. Zain (17) (2nd Dan) assists in the training at the dojo and has been to Japan to represent South Africa at the World Championships in

2014. The youngest Sumayah (10) (brown belt) has national colours, and Zaahid (8) (green belt) has already won various medals at competitions across the country. The father of these karateka himself has a 1st Dan black belt. Amongst them, they have a total of about 200 medals and have won various floating trophies throughout the years including senior and junior karateka of the year in their dojo. At the recent Eastern Cape Championships they won in total 4 gold and 4 silver medals and took 4 first place trophies in both kata and kumite. This family continues to train in the art of karate and plan on taking on the WJKA national and international championships together, kicking their way to the top.

Top class performances were seen when senior and junior athletes from clubs across the province and beyond, came to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to participate in a pre-season Madibaz EPA athletics meeting. Women’s shot put and discus athlete Ischke Senekal (22) a former Brandwag High School learner, said she did not make the distances she would have liked, but was happy to take the home ground win in both her events. “Sometimes when it gets too hot, and your hands are sweaty, you struggle to get your grip right. But overall I had a good day on the field and I could identify some areas in my technique that I can improve on.” Senekal, who was recently named Madibaz Athletics female athlete of the year, achieved a distance of 13,50m in the shot put and 47,51m in the discus. 200m winner, and second place finisher in the 100m, Lonwabo Majerman, 24, was one of the stand-out sprinters on the day and was very happy about his performance. High jumper Garth Ellis walked away with a win after clearing a height of 1,95m.
