The above scenario is what the 45 billion litres of lost municipal water amount to per annum - owing to leaks and burst pipes in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole alone. This amounts to more than 123 million litres of municipal water leaking on a daily basis through the collapsing infrastructure of the Metro. “It is a massive loss to the people of the Metro at the hands of an uncaring local government. We are losing 42,3% of our water. This is a result of the Metro not handling a crisis that has been a long time coming. It let water pipes and water infrastructure go to rack and ruin,” Athol Trollip, DA Mayoral Candidate: Nelson Mandela Bay, commented on this shocking news. “The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality loses between R480 million and R1,2 billion to water leaks per year,” Trollip pointed out. Parliamentary replies reveal that in the 2013/2014 municipal cycle, 45 billion litres of NMB drinking water were lost to leaks and burst pipes. The average daily water consumption of NMB is 300 mega litres (1 mega litre = 1 million litre) Francois Greyling, DA Councillor of Ward 52, said there currently are 613 reported cases of water leaks in Despatch with only one plumber to attend to the problems. “There are two allocated plumbers to serve the Uitenhage and Despatch areas, but owing to accumulated leave one of them is on forced leave. As we speak, the reservoir in Daleview is nearly empty as a result of a faulty valve. The plumber is occupied in KwaNobuhle. Thus residents will soon be without water,” said Greyling. He further said, “It all sound good for the Mayor to cut the budget, but its damage control and will result in a further halt to service delivery. There currently are more than 50 vacant posts for plumbers.” NMB previously cut the water repair and

Lions steak evening in aid of girl (13) with scoliosis The Uitenhage Lions Club will be hosting a steak evening in aid of Brenda Vorster (13) who has been diagnosed with a 65 degree upper dorsal spine scoliosis. “As seen in the x-ray photo this results in the crowding of the right rib cage and deformity of the spine. “Her parents were informed that she needs to be operated on immediately as being left any later will result in paralysis,” said Uitenhage Lions Club President, Juan Hay. Family and friends have held various fundraisers with the first operation concluded re-
cently and resulting in Brenda’s spine extended by 5 centimetres. The medical procedure cost is in the region of R40 000 which excludes costs with the recovery at the physiotherapist, general practitioners plus travelling/accommodation costs for her family to support her during her fight for survival. The public are invited to come and join the Lions Club for an evening of eating, dancing with music provided by Rudi Stoltz and great fellowship for a very worthy cause. m uitstekende opstelle te kan skryf is nie almal beskore nie. Maar vir Tayla Gouws van die Laerskool Handhaaf op Uitenhage kom kreatief skryf maklik. Juis hierom het dié gr. 7-leerder eerste gekom in die opstelkompetisie van die ATKV-tak in Uitenhage. Deelnemers het 60 minute gehad om ’n opstel oor Afrikaans te skryf. Hul opsies was “Afrikaans, my taal, my trots”, “Afrikaans is pret en plesier” of “My liefde vir Afrikaans”. Hier is Tayla se wenopstel:

Afrikaans, só ’n mooi Taal, so uniek. As ek in die kar sit, luister ek my gunstelinglied. So mooi geskryf, met gevoel, ek sing dit uit my hart, want dit is iets wat ek werklik bedoel. My liefde vir Afrikaans is soos my
boetie se liefde vir sjokolade. Dit is suiwer en skoon, net soos water wat oor jou drup op ’n warm dag. Elke dag van my lewe dink ek net aan my pragtige Taal. Bobotie en waterblommetjiebredie is my ma se gunsteling-disse. Rare unieke name, maar tog so lekker. Afrikaans is die mooiste taal tussen alle Tale. Daarom, Afrikaans, het ek jou liewer as sjokolade. Mag jy vir altyd my gunsteling-Taal bly.

Gamtoosekspo ’n landbou kuierplek

MONIQUE BASSON Die Gamtoos-ekspo is dié naweek die bymekaarkomplek vir almal wat in landbouimplemente, landbouprodukte, tegnologie en landbounavorsing belangstel. Uitstallings fokus hoofsaaklik op die hoekstene van kommersiële boerdery in die OosKaap. Daar sal ook uitstallings en demonstrasies wees van buitelug en 4x4 aktiwiteite. Bekende trekker- en motorhandelaars sowel as verskaffers van die nuutste landboutegnologie, agente van werktuie vir sitrus, groente en ander verwante landboubedrywighede sal by die ekspo uitstal en demonstrasies lewer. Besoekers kan hulle verlustig in die gewilde veteraan-trekkers wat ’n draai by die ekspo gaan maak. Nóg ’n gewildheid is die plaasmark waar vars groente en vrugte sowel as lekkernye vanaf plase geproe en gekoop kan word. Leerders van vier laerskole gaan Saterdag aan mini-krieketwedstryde by die ekspo deelneem. Môre word ’n ontbyt met FNB en bekende ekonoom en rubriekskrywer, prof. Johan Willemse aangebied. Die fokus is op: Hoe beplan jy jou boerdery besigheid en betrek die familie - hoe lyk die ekonomie en landboumarkte? Die koste is R1 000 per tafel vir agt persone. New owners of the day-care, mother and daughter, Milinda Ferreira and Melissa Smith, were granted the great opportunity of taking over this existing school from Nicolene Koen, who was the owner of Sprokiesland for the past 8 years. With much enthusiasm and excitement Melissa and Melinda will take over Sprokiesland from January 2016. “Children can spend each day interacting, learning and playing with a large emphasis on acquiring the basic skills they need to go to school,” said Melinda. Activities like games, singing, stories, counting and of course playing are all part of the curriculum to teach them the vital key points needed in the beginning phase of education. Sprokiesland is a bilingual facility where a prescribed curriculum is followed. They provide daily meals to the children and at snack time there are biscuits, cool drink and/or tea. Whenever children need to follow a special diet, they will see it being followed stricktly. Melissa said teachers are vital, “Therefore we all have done our Foundation Phase training and are equipped with all the necessary educational material and toys required for
teaching. The day-care hours from Mondays to Fridays are 06:30 - 17:30. It will be open during school holidays, but not on public holidays. (Sprokiesland is closed for 3 weeks during December and opens on January 4th, 2016.) Children between the ages of 3 months up to 5 years are accommodated. Parents have the option to let their kids be involved in additional
activities offered. This will take place in an allocated time to not interfere with the daily basic educational programme. Former owner, Nicolene Koen, wishes to thank all the parents for their support through the years. VW PeoplePavilion wins architectural award REPORTER The Eastern Cape Institute of Architects (ECIA) has recognised Volkswagen’s R30 million multi-purpose complex in Uitenhage, the VW PeoplePavilion, as one of the Eastern Cape’s leading architectural buildings. Twenty submissions were received for work conducted in the Eastern Cape, from local and national architectural practices. Adendorff Architects and Interiors, based in Port Elizabeth, received the award for outstanding work on the design and construction of the new Volkswagen PeoplePavilion building and sports field in Uitenhage. “We view the award as recognition of our contribution to architectural discourse in the Eastern Cape,” said Dr Gillian Adendorff from Adendorff Architects & Interiors. The PeoplePavilion, which was opened in 2013, is a multi-faceted building catering to a number of needs and requirements within the Volkswagen and Uitenhage community.

Painting auctioned at Rock the Hage music festival Well known artist, Elize Du Buson has donated one of her original oil paintings to be auctioned at the Rock the Hage music festival at Muir College this weekend. The painting features a musician playing his guitar at Cannon Hill. It is truly a work of art and worth bidding for! The proceeds from the auction of the painting are to be donated to the Uitenhage & District SPCA. Standout performers for Pirates were Jonathan Bakker, Hercules Koekemo er, Elrich Tolmie and Skuttie Bezuidenhout. Pirates route to the final was 87 down to VW, then a must win 84 up against Park Tigers, and then they were too good for VW in the Final.

Hit golf balls in support of school Uitenhage High School in association with Dajees Hardware Store, will hold its annual golf day on Saturday at the Uitenhage Golf Club. According to the organiser, Norman Roman, this event will enjoy the support of local participants as well as contestants from other towns and cities. “As with previous years. The school would like to express its sincere gratitude to all stakeholders in Uitenhage High School, who have supported the institution over the years,” said Mark Williams, principal of Uitenhage High School. A variety of prizes will be up for grabs at the event with the promise of a trophy and bragging rights for the winning contestant. All varieties of organisations like companies, churches or clubs can enter the competition at only R800 per four ball (group of four players) and individuals enter at R150. A prize-giving will follow the completion of play and a raffle will be drawn at the time as well. “Funds generated from the golf day will be utilized to further the development of learners at the school.
