VWSA wins health and wellness award REPORTER

olkswagen Group South Africa has been recognised by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber at its annual Health and Wellness Awards. The awards, which were held at a gala event at the Feather Market, saw Volkswagen taking the Health and Wellness Award for a Large Enterprise. “Volkswagen’s health and wellness programme looks at employees’ health from a holistic perspective. Apart from a biannual check-up for all employees, on site medical facilities as well as employee assistance services, consultation also includes HIV/Aids prevention,” said Thomas Schaefer, VWSA Managing Director. The Volkswagen Wellness Centre was awarded for work done with the health checkups, HIV counselling and testing, chronic conditions clinics, rehabilitation programme at

the PeoplePavillion Gym which is administered by an onsite biokineticist, Peer Educator programme and the Weight Loss Challenge. “A healthy body as well as a healthy mind makes for happier and thus productive employees. We have managed to reduce the impact of chronic diseases in our employees and this has ensured that our absentee rate is below our internal targets. This is essential for building quality cars to customer expectation,” said Dr Siki Gwanya-Mdletye, VWSA Doctor. “At VWSA, the 1-hour check-up comprises six different tests focusing on HIV, Tuberculosis, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Blood Cholesterol, resting ECG prevention and treatment; we focus on these chronic diseases whilst delivering a single service together with our other suite of offerings, ” added Dr Gwanya-Mdletye. “Initiatives like the Peer Educator programme and the Weight Loss Challenge

Family fun day at Nasruddin school A Family Fun Day with the theme Culture Rama, a fusion of international cultures, will be hosted by Nasruddin Islamic School at 63 Van der Riet Street in Uitenhage on Saturday. BONSAI SHOW <Bonsai enthusiasts in South Africa are envied by those from other countries, as here is a wide variety of trees and shrubs that can be turned into spectacular bonsai. One such example is Spekboom, which is indigenous to the Eastern Cape. Spekboom has enormous carbon storing capabilities and is unique in that it stores solar energy to photosynthesise at night. This spekboom seen above, started growing during 1998, and is trained by Susan Adriaanzen. Various indigenous bonsai will be on display during the EP Bonsai Society’s annual show which will be held at Sherwood Garden Centre, Walker Drive, PE, from 2122 November. Who will be the cutest UD Summer Baby? TANYA VAN ZYL The UD News is once again looking for a baby to grace the front page of its last edition of the year on Thursday, December 17. The UD News Summer Baby competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first ever Summer (only babies born after 25 December 2014). This year, parents must enter their babies via social media platforms. There are three platforms to choose from: Facebook – UD News|Nuus At the top of the UD Facebook page, click on the Summer Baby tab, which will take you to the entry form where you can upload your baby’s photo and enter all the details. You need to enter from a computer or laptop, because cell phone entries do not work. Young ones’ concert to ‘stir the soul’

Vocals for Christ, a multi-denominational seven member group of self supporting young singers from Uitenhage, travel and perform with one thing in mind, to stir the soul and spread the good news. Under the leadership of James Arnolds they have been together for the past 18 months and have performed all over South Africa. This fresh new gospel group can be heard on Saturday evening, November 14th from 19:00 - 22:00 at the St Simon of Cyrene Church hall in Rosedale. Their concert will be in

aid of St Katharine’s Church funds. The public are invited to support this function. To assist with the group’s upkeep and improvement of music equipment their CDs (R50) and DVDs (R150) will be available for purchase at their performance. Vocals for Christ will sing a few well known Christmas Carols as well as a selection from some of the Sankey gospel hymns (Ira David Sankey 1840 – 1877), Southern Gospel and other spiritual songs. Ses van Bergsig se eerste netbalspanspelers is vir die Oos-Kaapse LSEN span gekies wat aan die nasionale alle ouderdomme netbaltoernooi in Boksburg deelgeneem het. Die OosKaap LSEN netbalspan was die vorige twee jaar elke keer die naaswenners, maar het vanjaar die bordjies verhang en is as die kampioene gekroon. Bergsig is trots op hierdie ses netbalspelers wat hul skool se naam hoog gehou het tydens

die toernooi. Cherryl-Ann Pipes was ‘n nuweling in Bergsig se eerste netbalspan en het haar debuut vir die Oos-Kaap span gemaak. Sy is ook ‘n kranige atleet. Maurisha Kleinbooi, Christelle Westraad, Nadine Bain, Rewalda Klaas en Sha’day Roberts het die afgelope drie jaar in Bergsig se eerste netbalspan gespeel. Hulle voltooi almal hulle skoolloopbaan aan Bergsig aan die einde van 2015.

Optometrists support brighter future for learners In a See Clear Project co-ordinated by the PE Family Mission, local optometrists agreed to visit CW Hendrickse Primary School in Uitenhage to have learners’ eyes screened and spectacles fitted. “The project entailed visiting our school and screening all learners. A great number of learners indeed needed a thorough eye test,” said the Principal of the school, Mr D Ryners. “The frames, lenses, tests and transportation of learners to optometrists were all free of charge. The joy and jubilation were evident on their faces of the learners who were fitted with spectacles. This will definitely make life

easier and improve their academic results.” The project was made possible thanks to Romano Satanassi who acquired funding from PE Family Mission and embarked on the See Clear Project. “We wish to thank all involved in this project, for coming to the rescue of our learners. Most of our learners’ parents are unemployed and would never have been able to pay for these services,” said Ryners. Satanassi negotiated with a number of registered optometrists in Uitenhage namely Tomsett, Spectrum and Wolmarans Optometrists to administer the screening and tests.

This was evident during the launch of the 8th generation Passat, which offered journalists the experience to drive from the Boardwalk Hotel towards the Frontier Country, then turned east to the Sunshine Coast, lunched at Oceana Beach & Wildlife Reserve, before returning to the Friendly City. Whether these journos hail from the Friendly City or not, the Passat brought a smile to many a face as it offered an all-new driving experience. An eye on road and data The all-new Passat is the first Volkswagen to be equipped (as an option) with a head-up

display which projects key information like vehicle speed or navigation pictograms directly into the driver’s primary visual field. This means a driver can keep an eye on the road whilst checking data such as speed. It is also the first Volkswagen equipped with an active info display, which replaces the instrument cluster with a fully configurable interactive 12.3 inch display screen. Adapt to traffic flow Another exciting Passat gadget is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). This means that the Passat maintains a preselected speed; and a defined distance from the vehicle ahead; and it automatically brakes or accelerates depending on what the flow of traffic is.
