he Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is appealing to the more fortunate in the community to make Christmas time a little bit brighter for 250 less fortunate children.

As from last Friday, between the hours of 18:00 and 19:30 on weekdays and between 10:30 and 13:30 on Saturdays and Sundays the Club will be manning a Tree of Joy table at the entrance of Levyvale SuperSpar. “The idea is for the public to come forward and purchase a pre-packaged gift which the Rotary Club will deliver to one of seven nonprofit welfare organisations in the community,” said Rotarian Alan Reynolds, Project Convener of the Tree of Joy in Uitenhage. “The names of 250 children have been given by the respective charities to the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South who will allocate a gift to the name on the card and deliver the gift to the lucky child by early December.” Each gift costs only R60. “By buying a gift you will indeed make some child very happy during this festive season. “Please look out for the Rotarians in the store wearing their distinctive Rotary shirts and help make this Christmas a time of joyous giving by supporting this worthwhile cause,” said Reynolds.

Time for Noddy’s Christmas party Heilie Combrinck Noddy will be in Uitenhage on Saturday, November 28th from 12:00 to 15:00 for his annual Christmas party, hosted by the Uitenhage Lions Club. Christmas lunch for homeless kids HEILIE COMBRINCK

hildren living on the street are not there by choice. It is a result of one of society’s growing illnesses, being neglected and rejected by irresponsible parents. Thembisa Vusani established God’s Haven, a non-profit organisation which is registered with the department of Social Development in the Eastern Cape, with the aim to take care of homeless children. “One day, when I was walking down Caledon Street it struck me how hopeless these young children must feel without a mother, a home, food and no love,” said Thembisa Vusani. She then decided to establish God’s Haven and has been supported by several institutions like SASA, Social Development, the local police service, Department of Education, Home Affairs and VWSA Community Trust. “Homeless children are a growing problem in the country and can not be ignored. These children grow up and become adults without identity as they have no relatives, no references and no money. “Consequently they can not afford to have identity books. And we all know there is no future without an identity. Therefore we as

the community need to take responsibility and assist wherever we can to make life a bit easier for homeless children.” Vusani is in the process once again to organise a Christmas lunch for the homeless street children where each of them can enjoy a healthy home-cooked meal at the Uitenhage Town Hall. “We can not ignore them. They need to be educated, they need to be trained, to have a place of shelter and they need food. Therefore the community as a whole and all the relevant institutions should all be on board to assist with the growing number of street children,” said Vusani. The Christmas Lunch will be held on December 21st at the Uitenhage Town Hall. All interested in supporting Vusani and God’s Haven are requested to contact her on 071 765 8568. “Contributions by means of food, clothing or presents will be highly appreciated. It will contribute to an enjoyable moment for those children in need. Actually any kind of donation will be a blessing. And blessed is the hand that gives,” said Vusani.

Van der Walt was die oorkoepelende wenner. Sy het ook ’n toekenning ontvang as die Senior Burger van die Jaar in die kategorie 70 tot 79 jaar. Die projekte wat sy sedert haar aftrede in Addo en later in Uitenhage onderneem het was deurslaggewend in haar aanwys as Senior Burger van 2015. Van der Walt was die dryf agter die stigting van ‘n nuwe VLV oggendtak op Uitenhage, Carpe Diem. Die rede vir die stigting was om vroue met skoolgaande kinders die geleentheid te bied om soggens by aktiwiteite van die vereniging betrokke te raak. Van der Walt het die inisiatief geneem op aandrang van die destydse President van die VLV Kaapland, Erika Lubbe, wat haar kommer uitgespreek het oor die dalende ledetal en sluit van takke as gevolg van veroudering van taklede. Die aanmoediging en ondersteuning van die MiddellandSirkelpresident, Lynette Martin, het Carpe Diem met Van der Walt as voorsitter die lig laat sien. She received 39 units of blood following a tragic car accident. At the time of Bianca’s accident, SANBS imposed cut backs as a result of very low blood stocks and her family is determined to assist SANBS this festive season in support

of other blood recipients and their families, to prevent another shortage. The Bianca-Anne Harper Agherdien Blood Drive entails the following: A mobile blood drive at The Bridge from 1 to 16 December (Game foyer); Klinicare Uitenhage blood drive on December 11th from 12:00-19:00; Walker Drive, Kenako Mall & The Bridge blood drives on December 16th; Klinicare Despatch blood drive on December 22nd from 11:00 to 18:00. “South Africa is saddled with a high accident rate, an increasing number of illegal drivers on the roads and traffic law enforcement that needs to be more efficient,” said Denzyl Harper, Bianca’s father. “Bianca loved people. Plascon fun and paint day at College Hill College Hill Preparatory staff, SGB members and learners were very excited recently when a team from Plascon Paints visited the school premises. Plascon Paints made a commitment to paint all the play equipment in the Grade R play area. Their team consisted of Teresa Klase (who headed-up the project), Maria Dalton, Andrea Levack and Nathan Nimrod. It was not all about painting but a fun-filled day which included activities like a K9 dog

show by Warrant Officer Jacques Adlem and other team members. Library services and arts and crafts were offered by Nadine Landman and Nisika Scott. Jaco van Schalkwyk and his fellow Future King players also attended and played some demanding matches with the learners. Brushane Cedrass from iActOn provided the DStv and music during the day and Williams Hunt Uitenhage was present with a display of the latest Opel and Isuzu vehicles.

Vinnige Poggenpoelduiwe op Despatch opgeveil Duiwe van die nasionale hok in die Oos-Kaap het hulle finale wedvlug van die seisoen gevlieg vanaf Ladybrand, met ’n duif van Colesberg wat met vlieënde vaandels gewen het. Kort agter dié duif van Poggenpoel & Seuns het Hennie le Roux van Despatch se duif ingeklok met Paul de Wet van Worcester se duif in die derde plek.

Die Poggenpoel-duiwe het drie van die vier wedvlugte gewen en vaar goed in die Nasionale Hokke regoor die land. Saterdag hou Despatch Posduifklub ’n duiwe-veiling van ongeveer 90 duiwe by die klubhuis. Dié geveerdes kan vanaf 12:00 besigtig word voordat die veiling om 14:00 begin. “Duiwe met van die beste genetika sal opge-

veil word. Na verwagting kan die Poggenpoelduiwe goeie pryse behaal,” het Hennie le Roux van Despatch Posduifklub gesê. Ander bekende duiweboere wie ook duiwe in die nasionale hok het is Danie Hattingh van Kroonstad (wie se duif die beste gemiddeld behaal het), Kitchenbrand van Alberton, Gaddin van Bela Bela en Danie Campher van

Kirkwood. Daar is reeds meer as 20 duiwe ontvang vir die 2016 wedvlug, maar organiseerders verwag ’n totaal van sowat 700 inskrywings. Challenge of endurance for drivers and navigators T

he final round of the Algoa Rally Club 50k challenge will be held on the 20-21 of November and will be known as the Heinesport Aloe Rally. This event will be a challenge of endurance for drivers and navigators with night and day stages. The rally starts tomorrow evening at 20:00 with a combination of tar and gravel stages at the Aldo Scribante race track and finishes at Jachtvlakte near Uitenahge on Saturday afternoon after lunch with the 50k prize giving at Rangers Outdoor Game Reserve. The 50k Championship consists of seven rounds and competitors are allowed to drop one low score event with six to count. The championship contenders and prize winners will most likely come out of the first five on the leader board with Johan and Juane Viljoen Volkswagen Golf 2lt (97 points), followed by Jan Vosloo Toyota Yaris (88) followed closely by Ashley Bezuidenout and Neels Vosloo trailing by a few points. Competitors will be faced with many challenges which include night stages using spotlights. What can change the sequence of championship contenders is a puncture, mechanical breakdown or accidents which could leave competitors fumbling in the dark with flash lights. No outside assistance is permitted but competitors may assist each other. Assistance is available during service intervals by mechanics and pit crews only. Navigators are faced with challenges of reading pace notes in the dark using lamps to guide the driver at speed. A wrong call could end it all. The competitors after seven rounds are competing for first prize: a 2015 Volkswagen Polo rolling chassis rally car, Custom Portable Shade Gazebo supplied by Cape Fabric Engineering, racing gear and equipment from ATS Motor Sport. Second prize is R15 000 and third R7 500, with runner up contestants receiving cash for points scored
