The ‘hunt’ for plastic bottle caps C
ollecting plastic bottle caps is the new treasure hunt in Nelson Mandela Bay!
Sisters simply love community projects
age residents to divert plastic from landfill sites. Timber Solutions, a local green manufacturer specialising in recycled plastic furniture and applications, receives all the collected plastic caps and transforms them into beautiful furniture and planks.
The treasure is that for each 2 litre bottle filled with caps, Timber Solutions will donate R1 to help shelter women and children affected by domestic violence. The high levels of sexual abuse against women and children are a sad reflection of the moral values of some South Africans. So, once again, another 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children commenced yesterday. With this innovative “Love Earth Bottle Cap” project, more than 400kg (about 1 000 two litre bottles) of plastic bottle caps have already been collected so far – and it is only the start. “The public are motivated to ‘go green’ this festive season by collecting all plastic bottle caps. With various drop-off points in Nelson Mandela Bay, this project aims to empower and instil a sense of environmental responsibility in residents,” says Melinda Labuscagne, committee member of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa, Eastern Cape branch. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in partnership with Timber Solutions, the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Business School encour-

Never take your sight for granted National Eye Care Awareness month was celebrated and the purpose was to educate and raise awareness about eye health, specifically the prevention and treatment of blindness. For PE Eye and Laser Institute, Eye Care Awareness month was about giving sight back to those who do not have the benefit of a medical aid or the funds to afford a cataract removal procedure. As part of their community outreach program the Eye and Laser Institute and Medical Forum Theatre Day Hospital provided free cataract operations to 20 patients who had been screened by Nkosinathi Foundation for the Visually impaired and the Eye Clinic at the Provincial Hospital P.E. The MFT Day Hospital staff, ophthalmologists, Dr P. Finestone and Dr H. Kettledas as well as anesthetist Dr A. van Rooyen donated their expertise, time and service to perform cataract removal procedures on these deserving patients.
The other ophthalmologists at PE Eye and Laser Institute will be helping more deserving patients throughout the remainder of the year. Cataract Day has been earmarked as one of the most satisfying and fulfilling days in the working life of the staff at the PE Eye and Laser Institute and MFT Day Hospital and 2015 has marked the 16th year that the staff participated in this special day. Cataract day was once again made possible by the kind and very generous donations of various companies such as Ophtec, SSEM, ProVision, SupraLatex and Covidien. Special mention must be made of Alcon Laboratories who sponsored the lenses and other consumables that facilitated the removal of the cataracts and insertion of the new intra ocular lens on the fortunate patients. Sight is the most wonderful gift. Never take it for granted.

he wonder of colour chemistry and various other science related puzzles will be unpacked in a fun way during the Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre’s next holiday programme. It runs from December 10th to 15th. “One of our fundamental objectives is to impress upon the learners the dire importance of studying and understanding chemistry,” said Ntuthu Ngxakaza, Science Communicator at the NMB Science & Technology Centre. “It is therefore imperative for learners to attend activities and to satisfy their curiosity in utilising a laboratory to perform experiments.” Children between the ages of 6 and 16 years

Carol evening at historic church Do you enjoy the music of the Christmas Season but don’t get much of an opportunity to sing out? Then St Katharine Anglican Church invites you to visit the historical and beautiful church known to the people in Uitenhage as the “Stone Church or Klipkerk”, for their annual 9 Lessons and Carol Evening service on Sunday, December 6th at 18:00. The program of scriptures and music is based on a service first held at King’s College, Cambridge, England, on Christmas Eve in 1918. The Congregation will be entertained by the Despatch Men’s Choir, an organ-recital by Liesel Murphy and also well-known singers, Karina Pattinson, Hazel Swanepoel and Ilza and Kelly Hansen. The congregation won’t be left out as they will also sing some of the beautiful carols. The public are most welcome to join the evening of song at the old 1875 St Katharine’s Church which is also one of the oldest churches in Uitenhage. St Katharine’s
Church is on the Corner of Market and Durban Streets in Uitenhage. History: In 1875 the church was dedicated by the Rev. William Llewellyn and named by him after St Katharine, an eighth century Egyptian princess who was beautiful and wise. The foundation stone, which cannot be found today, was laid in 1867 and it is from this date that the anniversaries are counted, although the building began only in 1869. It was completed in 1875 after many financial constraints and problems. In 1894 the chancel was added and the original galvanized iron roof replaced by the present slate roof in 1966. It is built in simple Gothic architectural style with stones quarried from the vicinity of the farm “Hillwacht” and transported by ox-wagon to this site where stone masons of the Moslem faith built the original structure.

Sisters are eager to make a difference HEILIE COMBRINCK
They explore, they participate in sport, they read, and they have at heart to make a difference in their community. These are the La Bercensie sisters of Uitenhage, Jasmine (8) and Anika (9) who eagerly contributed to College Hill Preparatory School being one of the top schools which participated in the Re-use, Reduce, Recycle and Love Earth plastic bottle cap project. “Everybody helped us from our granny, the neighbours and daddy. Even when we walk, we look for bottle caps to fill our bottles,” said Anika La Bercensie. Jasmine commented and said, “Yes, it was all hands on deck. Everybody helped.” Anika’s Grade 3 class won collecting the most bottle caps (27 bottles) whilst Jasmine’s class collected the most in the Grade 2 section (14 bottles). One of the Grade R classes won with a total of 42 bottles collected. After the competition closed, the sisters discovered another 232 bottle caps they forgot at home. “I thought to create something with it and the idea of a Christmas tree came to my mind. Now I think I want to give it to Rosa Munch old age home for Christmas,” said Jasmine. The local firm Timber Solutions uses the plastic caps in the manufacturing of their recycled plastic furniture. To date the schools which have contributed the most towards the project are Newton Park Primary with 380kg and College Hill Preparatory with 40kg. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has to date collected 25.1kg. Although the weigh-in for the 2015 effort is at the end of November, the project continues. The peak season of usage of plastic caps is during the forthcoming festive holiday. So, the La Bercensie sisters can start their “all hands on deck” effort again, collecting caps in support of the Love Earth plastic bottle cap project.

Children’s Day celebrated at hospital <National Childrens Day was celebrated at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. The Hospital Management would like to thank all the relevant role players that arranged and participated in the celebrations. Municipality brags with new interactive website At a touch of a button residents from Nelson Mandela Bay may now, through a brand-new interactive website, gain information regarding services, wards, councillors and payments. After initial registration, visitors will receive a personal welcome when logging into the portal, and also get personalised information regarding accounts, their ward council-
lors and a detailed ward map among other facilities. Municipal Webmaster, Didi van Heerden said although a website is never complete but considered it a “living tool” since it can and must always be improved on. “The information has been repackaged in smaller chunks and re-categorised for ease of consumption. Poggenpoel,” sê Hennie le Roux van die Despatch Posduifklub. “Poggenpoel het sy wenduif teruggekoop vir ’n rekordbedrag van R14 500. ’n Duiweboer van Welkom het teen hom gebie.” Volgens Le Roux kom dié duif uit ’n
wen-familie en gaan nou na die broeihok waar dit hopelik nog wenners vir Poggenpoel gaan teel. Die Suid-Afrikaanse Posduif-organisasie (SANPO) het die Nasionale Hok vir ’n verdere jaar aan die OosKaap toegeken en Despatch Posduifklub sal die hok bestuur. “Duiweboere in Nelson Mandelabaai is bevoorreg om só ’n hok in hulle midde te mag hê. Dit is die enigste hok in die land wat onder die beheer is van SANPO is,” sê Le Roux. Die duif-inname vir die 2016 seisoen is reeds oop en daar word tussen 600 en 800 inskrywings verwag. Om dit
meer bekostigbaar te maak is die inskrywingsfooi vir die seisoen na R900 per duif verlaag. Groep-inskrywings is R4 900 vir 7 duiwe. “Volgens die begroting van SANPO behoort die totale prysgeld in die omgewing van R200 000 te wees. Dit is te sê as daar meer as 600 duiwe in die hok gaan wees,” sê Le Roux. Belangstellendes, nie noodwendig duiweboere nie, word uitgenooi om in te skryf.
