Die laboratoriumkoste om ’n vol stel tande te maak, is ongeveer R3 000. Dis geld wat Nanto en baie ander nié het nie, verduidelik Ralph Meintjes, tandheelkunde tegnikus van Uitenhage, wat deur sy Adopt A Smile projek tande na die mense bring wat dit broodnodig het. Die oorsprong van Adopt A Smile het by ‘n prediker begin, verduidelik Meintjes, wat eens sendingwerk op verre en vreemde plekke oorweeg het. “Ek was by ‘n Anglikaanse konferensie waar die prediker gesê het daar is professionele mense in die gehoor wat sendingwerk wil doen. Maar dat God hulle in hul professies wil gebruik om op eie voorstoep mense se lewens te raak,” sê Meintjes “Toe vat dié boodskap vlam in my hart, ek is so mal oor my familie en ek hoef nie my vrou en kinders agter te laat nie. My doel op aarde is om hier, in my werk, ‘n verskil te maak aan mense se lewens.” Kort daarna het Meintjes, terwyl hy vir sy koppie koffie by ‘n kafee gewag het, ‘n brief in ‘n koerant gelees van ‘n ene Piet wat so graag vir Kersfees ‘n stuk steak wil eet, maar hy het tande daarvoor nodig. Dít het Meintjes by sy “sending-doel” gebring. Tande. Om te kan eet en om met selfvertroue te kan glimlag. Piet het toe sy tande vir daardie Kersfeessteak gekry. Hierna het Meintjes en sy vrou Crystal besluit om voortaan elke Kersfees, 40 mense te seën met ‘n kunsgebit en toe Smile Ministries International, ‘n nie-winsgewende organisasie, gestig. “Ek het op die getal 40 besluit, want in 40 dae het die Here baie vermag.”

Song to help fight ‘enemy’ HEILIE COMBRINCK “It’s an enemy no one can see, no one knows who, it’s still a mystery ...” These are lyrics written by a local nursery owner Vossie Vorster, who had his song “An enemy called Aids” registered at the South African Music Rights Organisation. He wrote the song 14 years ago, whilst attending a HIV/ Aids awareness workshop in Cape Town as a workforce representative from Parmalat. “It was shocking to see statistics of the infection rate - and that was more than a decade ago - today it

It is like an enemy that you can’t see. Despite all the awareness campaigns and medical treatments people are dying by the day as a result of this disease.” Vorster recently took his song to Jeff Benjamin at Bay City Sound Studio in Port Elizabeth to have it recorded. “It took them only 4 hours to have it ready to roll. The voices of Catherine van Aswegen and Selwyn Arends were perfect. “They gave the song the powerful sound it needed. Now, I want it to be on air at various radio stations and played at events. It must carry the message to restrain people from giving this enemy any more power.” Vorster said it is his wish one day to see masses of people singing the song together. “There are way too many people who are ignorant about HIV/Aids. And way too many people saying it’s not our problem. “The only way to tackle an issue bigger than ourselves is for us all to get involved in changing minds, changing lifestyles,” said Vorster. The song is available on CD at Cape Gardens Nursery in Cuyler Street, Uitenhage.

Too many South Africans are still being infected with HIV, said Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, commemorating World Aids Day which was held on Tuesday, December 1. “The number of new HIV infections is still extremely high, particularly among young women and girls,” said Ramaphosa in a statement issued by the presidency. All sexually-active South Africans should use condoms, he said. Nevertheless, the country had made great strides in dealing with the illness. “We have the biggest HIV treatment programme in the world, with more than three million of our people on lifesaving antiretrovirals,” he said. Health24 reported that Aids has become the leading cause of death among African teens. According to results released by Unicef at a conference held in South Africa, 26 new HIV infections were occurring globally, every hour among teenagers aged between 15 and 19. Of the two million young people in this age range, living with the virus – about half were from just six countries: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, India, Mozambique and Tanzania. The international theme for World Aids Day was “Getting to Zero”. (News24)

U’hage Market a life changing platform HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage Market celebrates on Sunday its second year of serving the community through offering a platform for local entrepreneurs to earn an income. “We have never thought it would grow to one of the largest monthly outdoor markets in the Eastern Cape,” said Lilly de Jong from Women in Business. “It was established with the aim for local
and home based businesses to sell and market their goods to the public without having high overheads. “We came a long way and defeated the odds. I would like to thank all our stallholders who stuck with us through the ups and downs. With almost 4 000 Facebook likes and still increasing, as well as bringing the community of Uitenhage and surrounding areas together every first Sunday of the month, we wish to celebrate the community’s support,” said De Jong.
Some of the stallholders joined the inaugural market day during December 2013 and have since, never missed a market day yet. “It warms my heart when I hear the countless stories of the difference the market has made in stallholders lives. I’ve heard of this platform helping to put children through school, giving people independence, helping to pay the bills, the growth of small businesses, and even distracting some from sicknesses. This all makes it worthwhile to host the market day each month,” said De Jong.
Visitors from as far as George, East Londen and Graaff Reinet attended the Uitenhage Market. This is apart from the loyal local supporters who come to the market every month. OosKaap skuts verdien platinumstatus Die SA Jagters- en Wildbewaringsvereniging het onlangs hul jaarlikse gala-aand in Pretoria gehou waartydens skuts toekennings vir Platinum-status ontvang het. Die toekenning is die hoogste toekenning wat ’n skut kan behaal. Die skuts uit die suidelike Oos-Kaap wat hierdie gesogte toekennings ontvang het was Stuart Riddle, Aldo Smith, Janlo Ferreira, Anton Knoetse jnr. en Mornay Eyre. Die kompetisie behels heelwat mededinging op provinsiale vlak waar skuts die geleentheid kry om die beste moontlike telling in streekverband aan te teken. Na die streekskiet-kompetisies word die top 100 skuts van Suid-Afrika genooi om teen mekaar mee te ding vir die gesogte Platinum-status. Die nasionale kompetisie is op die Generaal Piet Joubert skietbaan buite Hammanskraal in Noord-Wes gehou. Die dag was gekenmerk deur uiters gesofistikeerde toerusting en weersonstandighede totaal anders as in die Oos-Kaap. By die kompetisie word daar oor verskillende afstande na lewensgrootte diereteikens geskiet, met verskeie tellings in die orgaanareas. Die areas waarna gemik word vir Platinum-status, is so groot soos ’n ten-

Top coaches at athletics clinic

thletes and coaches from across the Eastern Cape will get a head start in 2016 when a host of top coaches come together to help develop the province’s talent ahead of athletics season. The coaching clinic, put together by Madibaz Athletics and hosted by Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in Uitenhage, will be held from January 6 to 8. Madibaz athletics manager Nellis Bothma said, “All schools, athletes, and coaches are welcome to attend the clinic. The aim is to enhance the performance of both athletes and coaches.” Gerrie Posthumus, 57, a sprint, hurdles and middledistance running expert, is one of the coaches eager to

His coaching career spans more than 30 years and he has achieved his level three coaching accreditation from both Athletics South Africa (ASA) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). “The most important thing I have learnt is how to work with an athlete’s mind. Training counts for nothing if one’s head is not right; athletics is as much a mental game as it is a physical one,” said Posthumus. “I do not want to protect any trade secrets. I want to share my knowledge and help grow athletics in our province. The Eastern Province team was the best at one stage and we want to get there again.” He will be joined by, among others, hurdles coach Zirk Kemp, 34, who is also part of the hosting team at DP. Kemp is an ASA accredited coach and now shares his personal experience and knowledge with Madibaz athletes. “This clinic has been held at Kirkwood High School in the past and attracted about 260 coaches and athletes on one occasion. That shows us the interest and need for quality coaching at this level,” said Kemp. He said the first step towards better performing athletes was improving the local coaching standards. “Coaching the coaches is probably more important than working with the athletes.
