She is the gorgeous Ziva Isaacs from Riebeek College Girls’ High School in Uitenhage who bowled the judges over with her stunning dress and overall look for her matric dance on July 25. Ziva’s dress was designed and made by Jason Kieck. “I really had no idea what I wanted so I went to my designer with three different dresses and he mashed them up for me while I was with him, and I instantly loved the dress that he designed,” Ziva replied on where the inspiration for her dress came from. Her hair was done by Crystal’s Hair and her make-up was done by Health & Beauty. Craig Anderson Photography did her photoshoot. According to Ziva, she started planning her matric dance as early as December 2014. “My mom helped me a lot and she planned to have my photo shoot a month before the time just in case it rained on the day of my matric

moment she found out she won the competition. Ziva loves the outdoors and is very adventurous, “so I often go hiking (with my karate club). I also love spending time on the beach or even just in the comfort of my own home with some good company.” She will be studying medicine at the University of Free State next year and then specialize in pediatrics. She has had her academic colours and academic honours since grade 11. She was the junior school and senior school house captain, as well as the junior school’s deputy headgirl and senior school prefect. Ziva was also the deputy editor of the school magazine and president of the interact club. “In terms of sport I did team swimming at school and I have my EP karate colours as well as my SA colours. I achieved my SA colours last year and went to Japan to represent SA in October 2014.” Her advice for next year’s matriculants attending a matric dance? “Just enjoy every second of the day. Allow nothing to get you down and take millions of photos! The night goes by really fast so make every second count!”

VW ‘invests’ millions in Metro’s people T

he Volkswagen Community Trust’s financial support of seven local charities ensures that they can continue serving the Nelson Mandela Bay community at large. Under the flagship Volkswagen for Good initiative, Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre, Malabar Primary School, Sanctor Primary School, Alzheimer’s Eastern Cape, Yokhuselo Haven, Thand’usana (Love a Baby): Babies Safe Home and St. Francis Hospice Nelson Mandela Bay, received a portion of the R646 914 cheque which was handed over at the Volkswagen manufacturing factory in Uitenhage. “Volkswagen is, always has been and always will be a People’s Company and it is through these quarterly donations where we try to alleviate some of the financial burdens and also uplift our community in the Metro and the Eastern Cape,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director. This is the fourth donation this year and in total, almost R2.4 million has been handed over to local charities in 2015. Volkswagen Group South Africa has invested more than R100 million on CSI projects during the Community Trust’s 25-year existence. There has been a strong emphasis on education, youth development, enterprise development, health, community and wellbeing.

The public school provides computer classes which assist learners to advance their computer skills at an early age. )Sanctor Primary School situated in Bethelsdorp currently has over 650 learners. NMMU centre to enhance rubber and polymer science In an effort to further develop research efforts, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has launched a Centre for Rubber Science and Technology at its South Campus. REDISA (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa) partnered in 2013 with NMMU to establish an environmental rating centre, and the newly launched Centre for Rubber Science and Technology is the first phase of the Centre’s development. The REDISA/NMMU partnership not only makes relevant research within the Department of Chemistry at NMMU possible, but extends to other departments. For instance, the Department of Botany is involved in the development of Life Cycle Assessments/Analyses (LCAs), whilst the Computer Science Department is involved in the development of a model that will assist in tyre identification and harvesting. The Centre will be key in growing the NMMU’s already strong expertise in rubber and polymer science through the addition of advanced laboratory test equipment and funding for research students. Drawing on NMMU’s historic experience in rubber science and technology, the Centre will focus on providing analytical and technical services, as well as training for the needs of rubber and tyre manufacturing industries within South Africa. “Rubber and rubber-derived products are

key to many sectors of the economy, and having local expertise on par with world standards will lessen our dependence on imported expertise, and will help to support our own manufacturing base,” says Stacey Davidson, REDISA director. “The work that the Centre for Rubber Science and Technology will do needs to be seen as not only important in helping to deal with the problem of waste tyres, but also as a part of the bigger picture, which is the need to start driving towards a circular economy. The rate at which natural resources are being consumed means that many will run out within years, or decades at most. In all spheres we need to look at how we can change the way we design, use, re-use, recover and recycle,” says Davidson. According to Dr Percy Hlangothi, supervisor in the research department, “The Centre will not only house research projects that are relevant to the industry and community needs, but will also offer learning programmes and support services to benefit the industry, while growing the national skills base.” To date, over 50 masters and doctoral students have graduated from NMMU, having completed their research projects in the Physical and Polymer Chemistry Research Group. Many of these graduates are employed in the local tyre and rubber industry with a number having gone on to establish rubber-related companies.

Die Tierkoppe, HTS Daniel Pienaar se boeremusiekorkes is nie net plaaslik bemind nie, maar het die Oos-Kaap eer besorg toe hulle tydens die Nasionale Boereorkes Kompetisie ‘n tweede plek verower het. Mnr. Willie Boshoff, afrigter, berig dat die orkes voor dié kompetisie ure geoefen het en dat die silwer medaljes nie net ‘n welverdiende beloning was nie, maar ‘n

trotse prestasie. Daar was slegs drie punte verskil tussen die Tierkoppe en die wenners van Grey College – ‘n baie ervare orkes, wat bevoorreg is om deur die junior orkes gevoed te word. DP se orkes ontwikkel nie net sy lede se musikaliteit en selfvertroue nie, maar vermaak graag sy gemeenskap. Skakel gerus mnr. Boshoff indien u hierdie talentvolle Tiere wil hoor speel.

Start your December holidays the fit way – try a tri Start your December holidays the fit way – try a tri with About IT. The popular About IT Triathlon Summer Series returns to the Eastern Cape this December with 4 rounds of a sprint distance triathlon taking place in Port Elizabeth and St Francis Bay between the 13th and the 26th December. An ideal starting place for any budding triathlete, the Sprint Distance triathlon comprises a 750m swim, 20km Cycle and 5km Run which ensures that this Series attracts triathletes from all over the country, some attempting their first triathlon whilst others are deep into training for the Ironman 70.3 or full Ironman races next year. Port Elizabeth hosts the first 3 races of the series, all starting at Pollok Beach, and taking place this Sunday (13th), Wednesday

16th and Sunday 20th. To keep things exciting the organisers have promised that each race day course will be different throughout the series. Round 1 on Sunday will see the 5km run route taking participants through the very scenic Humewood Golf Course whilst the cycle is an out and back course along Marine Drive. Wednesday 16th triathlon is the annual ‘Pollok to Schoenies’ Triathlon which sees the 750m swim at Pollok Beach, the 20km cycle to the Sacramento Cannon in Schoenies and the 5km run being along the Sacramento Trail. Organisers collect all participants’ race kit and ensure that it is waiting for them in the transition area at Schoenies before their arrival on the bike. A chauffeur system is also offered for
