rmed Forces Week has been off to a successful start as thousands of people visited the Port Elizabeth harbour to view the Navy’s warships and submarine. Navy Spokesman Commander Greyling van den Berg said he was overwhelmed by the positive response they received during the weekend. “We had about 25 000 people at the harbour over the weekend. We were truly overwhelmed with the positive reaction and we were also grateful that they decided to spend their Valentine’s Day weekend with us. “There were people who waited for hours to view the ships but they mentioned that it was worth the wait,” van den Berg said. The night shooting event which takes place tonight, is expected to be one of the highlights of Armed Forces Week. “The night shooting will be an absolute highlight. There will be thousands of people attending and watching,” van den Berg said. The night shooting demonstration at Kings Beach starts at 19:30 and will last for about 40 minutes. The demonstration will end with a ball of fire detonating on Kings Beach. “People should bring their picnic baskets and chairs and come down to the Kings Beach area or they can watch the night shooting from nearby restaurants; it will be a lovely night out and something very different,” van den Berg said.

Fighting crime is a shared responsibility Fighting crime is a shared responsibility. The police, the community and the business sector need to work hand-in-hand to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage precinct. The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in re-
ducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of stolen property. According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Gerda Swart, police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have arrested more than 165 sus-
pects during crime prevention operations that were conducted over the past weekend. A total of 59 traffic fines were issued valued at almost R30 000 during the period. Arrests made varied from assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, robbery, assault common and four (4) arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. Some 54 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes and 27 suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of drugs.
Four suspects, between the ages of 18 and 32-years-old, appeared in the Addo Regional Court on Monday, on a charge of dealing in mandrax. “The four suspects were arrested last Friday, during an intelligence driven operation with various SAPS role players involved,” said Lieutenant Swart. “Police members confiscated 171 mandrax tablets worth R10 275 and R9 154 in cah. The arrests were made at a residential address in Valencia in Addo.”

Geestesgesondheid baat by Anibrandfees

U
itenhage Geestesgesondheid Vereniging is in hul 43ste bestaansjaar en die nuwe hoof-uitvoerende bestuurder, dr. Peter Else, is begeesterd om dié instansie van krag tot krag te laat groei. ’n Goeie afskop vir die nuwe rigting waarin Dr. Else sake wil bestuur, is dat Anibrand gesins- & musiekfees die vereniging se vier huise benoem het as begunstigdes van die fees. Dié huise is Natali Huis, Mary’s Place, Henriëtta Huis en Huis Lötter Bouwer, almal blyplekke vir verstandelik gestremde inwoners. “Ons is afhanklik van staatsbefondsing. Maar dit is noodsaaklik om ook eie inisiatief in te span met fondsinsamelings en projekte om ons inwoners te versorg en kantoor se deure oop te hou vir die diens wat ons aan die gemeenskap lewer,” sê Dr. Else. Daar is altesaam 73 inwoners in die vier huise, almal met gestremdhede, maar van verskillende tipes. Party het aangebore gestremdhede, ander is fisies en verstandelik
gestrem, dan is daar ook psigiatriese pasiënte. Van die gevalle word deur die Departement van Maatskaplike Ontwikkeling na Uitenhage Geestesgesondheid verwys of ander departemente, afhangende van die mense se toestande. Maar dan is daar mense wat uit hul eie by Uitenhage Geestesgesondheid aanklop en hulp benodig met gestremdes in hulle families, waarvoor hulle nie kan sorg nie. “Ons bied berading aan vir mense wat deur ’n moeilike tyd gaan hetsy trauma, geweld of een of ander vorm van verlies. Hulle weet nie hoe om dit te hanteer nie. Daarom is ons deure oop om te help waar ons kan.” Dr. Else is ’n lewensraadgewer en geestelike berader. Hy het gespesialiseer in berading en sy doktorsgraad hierin verwerf aan ’n internasionale instansie. )Anibrand gesins & musiekfees word van 25 tot 28 Februarie aangebied by Hoërskool Brandwag se sportterrein en Barklystraat Tea ter. ROTARIËRS VERLEEN HULP BY TEHUIS
’n Father’s Voice seminaar word in Steytlerville gehou waar geestelike sprekers Henno Gerber, Salo Cloete en Jacques Malan die Nuwe Lig beweging aan die dorp se gemeenskappe gaan bekendstel. “Om Steytlerville te besoek is vir ons opwindend, maar ook deel van die groter plan vir Suid-Afrika,” sê Jacques Malan van Father’s Voice. Well, they say that once racing is in your blood you never get rid of the bug.”
With these words, Tracy Bandey McKay announced her come-back to the circut after an absence of 18 years. “I have always yearned to get back in the seat, but work commitments, raising a beautiful little girl as a single mother, and life in general has made it impossible,” said McKay. “But, now my little girl is almost a teenager, and I have a wonderful new man in my life. And with his help, my father decided it’s time to build a new car.” With the assistance of a silent partner, McKay bought a Mini and it has been made race-ready (although it is still street legal). She managed to gain the support of her former sponsors as well as new sponsors. “My hero has always been Ayrton Senna. I have always admired his ethics, morals and attitude towards motorsport. He was a legend. “Locally, my mentor has always been Ben Morgenrood. He taught me never to take anything for granted, the meaning of sportsmanship, and to always remember to have fun. He said, ‘If you’re not having fun on the black stuff, what is the point?’” So, this time around McKay is just racing for fun. “I don’t intend to take any race too seriouslt. I just want to enjoy it. But if any of the guys get in my way, I will do my utmost best to get past them,” said McKay. McKay will race in the Regional Historics Championship. She used to race Clubman Saloons from 1992 to 1997. )McKay will be seen in action at Aldo Scribante on Satur day in the Dunlop Historic & Classic Saloons category in her 1983 Mini. ;Tracy McKay returned to track racing after an absence of 18 years.
