A mother’s plea for two hospital beds HEILIE COMBRINCK

mother’s plea, “My love and care is for free but care comes at a cost” touched the hearts of the Uitenhage Lions Club and they consequently appeal to the community for a donation of two hospital beds. The mother, Zenobia Olivier, who has been married for 30 years has a set of twin boys aged 24 years, both with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Jacques and Heindrich were born premature at 27 weeks and because of a shortage of oxygen suffered brain damage at birth. Public’s support puts Mental Health in top spot HEILIE COMBRINCK “Thank you to all the generous people in Uitenhage and Despatch who dared to be different and supported Casual Day 2015!” Thanks to them, Uitenhage Mental Health was awarded the runner-up for raising the second most funds in the Eastern Cape for the disability sector. It also performed the best of all the NGO mental health organisations in the Eastern Cape. “We are very proud of the people of Uitenhage and Despatch. Each year their support is phenomenal. We are grateful as Casual Day is our largest fund-raiser,” said Amilia Crouse, Uitenhage Mental Health’s co-ordinator of Casual Day.
Uitenhage Mental Health also was the runner-up in 2003 and 2005 and was awarded the first runner up best performing NGO for selling the most stickers as well as best performing NGO mental health in the province. According to Dr Peter Else, CEO of Uitenhage Mental Health, a percentage of the total funds raised by Mental Health South Africa in support of Casual Day, will be allocated to participating Mental Health offices. The top performers in the Casual Day campaign for 2015 were announced at the project’s annual awards held at The Boardwalk. The organisation that raised the most donations for Casual Day in the province is the Association for Persons with Disabilities Nelson Mandela Bay (APD NMB) raising R114 731. Uitenhage Mental Health was the runner-up
raising R52 104, followed by Autism Eastern Cape with R49 510, PE Mental Health R33 420, Rehab Southernwood with R28 470, McClelland Adult Centre with R28 300, APD Mthatha with R20 880, Khanyisa Special School with R19 595, Cheshire Home Summerstrand with R18 810 and APD King William’s Town with R15 456. Vanessa du Plessis, project leader of the National Council for Persons with Physical
Disabilities in SA said, “A large portion of what we raise comes from companies’ employees. “It is very interesting to note that employees who participate in projects like Casual Day are more positive, motivated and productive at work. Doing good as a team gives employees a feeling of pride and meaning.” Casual Day funds are raised as a result of a mere R10 donation for a Casual Day sticker.

No mercy for law offenders Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have arrested a total of 171 suspects during crime prevention operations that were conducted over the past weekend. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Gerda Swart, a total of 42 traffic fines (valued at R21 000) were issued and arrests made varied from housebreaking and theft, and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. Four arrests were made of persons driving
under the influence of liquor. A total of 72 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes. 31 Persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. Police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue with their actions to combat crime and they appeal to the community to provide valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property

Op Valentynsdag was daar vir die span van Solidariteit Helpende Hand-tak op Uitenhage geen groter liefdesgebaar as die geskenk van lewe nie. Daarom het die tak besluit om dié dag te vier deur bloed te skenk by die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBS) en terselfdertyd die onselfsugtige werkers te bederf met verversings. Taklede het gaan bloed skenk by die plaaslike SANBS kantoor in Billsonstraat, Uitenhage. VLV-vroue leer meer oor waterverf <Skilder Louise van Tonder het verlede week vroue van die VLV Uitenhagetak gewys hoe sy haar waterverfskil derye lewe gee. Hoërskool Despatch het sy Victor en Victrix Ludorum-leerders aangewys wat vanjaar uitsonderlik op die atletiekveld uitgeblink het. Die vier atlete het almal vier eerste plekke by die skool se jaarlikse kleure-atletiekbyeenkoms verwerf. Drieling vier laaste verjaardag op skoolbanke Die rooikop-drieling van Hoërskool Brandwag het onlangs hul agtiende en laaste verjaardag op die skoolbanke gevier. Oor die afgelope jare, sedert hulle in graad 8 by Brandwag ingestap het, het die drieling
bekende gesigte by ’n klomp skoolaktiwiteite geword. Aan die einde van verlede jaar is al drie tot die leerlingraad verkies. Die drie sussies is ook kringleiers by die VCSV en lede van Brandwag se Interact-klub.

ife-streaming by several flying drones, will give Wings & Wheels festival-goers the feel of being “into it” when adrenaline pumping action can be viewed and enjoyed on a big screen in one of the hangars. “There will be an array of two, four and no wheels, but wings action on the day. Those driven by curiosity always want to be closer to the action than allowed. By utilizing drones, it not only offers you a bird’s eye view, but also visuals that make you feel part of the action,” said Lourens Kruger, an organiser of the forthcoming Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show. The festival and air show will be held at the
Uitenhage Airfield on 4 and 5 March. It is organised by the Uitenhage Airfield Association and the beneficiaries of the event are the Oosterland Youth Centre and the Uitenhage SPCA. Some of the highlights of this year’s event are the new extreme 4x4 track which will be showcase of ultimate driving skills and superior mechanical abilities. “The race challenge of a Porche V8 against the Whisper aircraft of Russel Phillips will be awesome. Also the vintage race between a 1929 Model A Ford and a vintage aircraft from the late 1940s,” said Kruger. Aircraft to be seen at this 5th annual show include a Mustang, L39 Jet, Seafury, Sukoi, all flown by international aerobatic pilot Patrick Davison and his father Stu Davidson.

Elite runners ready for Addo trail run Trail runners from eleven countries across the globe will pit themselves against the elements this weekend as they set their sights on completing the Addo Elephant Trail Run. Set in one of the unique trail running locations in the world – the Addo Elephant National Park – a total of 314 runners will be participating. This includes an elite set of 39 runners who will be running the new 100 mile trail, equivalent to 160km. These runners will be out in the field for over approximately 20 hours. As it is a new course there is no history to predict an exact result. The race will be tracked by SPOT GPS tracking units as runners make their way through the park and the Zuurberg Mountains. One of the elite runners is Linda Doke, who was the 1st woman at Run the Rann 100 Miler in India, 2015. She also won the womens category at Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon 2014 (250km 7-day selfsufficient stage race) and she represented South Africa at the IAU World Ultra Trail Championships in Wales 2013. Zuurberg 5km fun run PPC will be sponsoring the race for the second year, including Saturday’s 5km fun run at Zuurberg Mountain Inn. Registration for the 5km fun run is at 08:00.

Youths to run through night for Cansa Members of the Uitenhage/Despatch Alpha Leo Club will be joining hundreds of people participating in the Cansa Relay For Life which will be held on the 11th March at Victoria Park High School sports complex. The Relay For Life is the Cancer Association of South Africa’s signature event where teams honour cancer survivors and remember those who died of the disease. Team members take turns walking or running around a track in the hope that cancer will one day be eliminated. The goal of the relay is to raise awareness about cancer related issues while raising money to help fight the disease through research, education, advocacy and services. “If it hasn’t already, cancer will affect you or someone you know. Will you help us take up the fight by making a donation to Cansa?” said Zinto Aphiwe, President of the Alpha Leo Club in Uitenhage. )The Cansa Relay for Life which will take place on Friday, 11th March from 18:00 to 06:00 on Saturday, 12th March.
