Vintage race at air show HEILIE COMBRINCK
I
t will be a once in a lifetime experience watching the vintage race against a 1929 Ford Model and the bright yellow 1940 SF25 Falke Motor aircraft. This and many other high flying and extreme activities will all be part of the weekend’s Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show at the Uitenhage Airfield. German pilot Jan Schiedek-Jacht will take the controls of the Falke, challenging Tiaan Geyer in the vintage Ford, but it will be the turn-around time which will determine the winner. In another race, the grand finale of Saturday’s air show, a powerful Porsche V8 will race against Russell Phillips in his Whisper aircraft. Activities start with a motorcade, beginning at VW PeoplePavilion cruising through town and ending at the airfield where they will be welcomed by the Caledonian Pipe Band. All participants meet at 07:00 at VW PeoplePavilion. At 09:00 the honourable mayor Danny Jordaan will officially open the festival after arriving in a R22 helicopter with the wellknown John Huddlestone as the pilot. A L39 Jet from Stu Davidson will be the first of many spectacular aircraft to take to the sky. Various other aircraft like Slings, Cirrus, Mustang, Seafury, Sukoi, gyrocopters, gliders and helicopters will follow.

This warning comes after police received several reports by people engaging in on-line transactions that at the end are corrupt. “This relates especially to goods and services advertised on line,” said Lieutenant Gerda Swart. “In most incidents perpetrators lured victims into paying huge amounts of cash through bank transfers or other payment methods for goods or services, which they never receive even after payment was done.”

New school nearly completed, but no new posts HEILIE COMBRINCK
C
onstruction of the state of the art all-new Sunshine Special School, for intellectually impaired learners, is well on its way and the completion date of the first phase is May 4th, 2016. Principal Candice Kivedo said they were quite overwhelmed with the new school and were looking forward to having the learners accommodated in the specially designed classroom set-up. The school include a state-of-the-art hydro therapy area, which is the first of its kind in Uitenhage. “Block A, which comprises class rooms for senior learners, is in the process of completion. It should be done by the beginning of May,” said Candice Kivedo, Principal of Sunshine Special School. Phase Two of school’s building process in-

cludes the upgrading of the hall and a parking area. The current offices will be demolished and in addition three classrooms and an ablution block will be constructed. The completion date is the end of August 2016. What is especially overwhelming for Kivedo and her staff, is the community’s eagerness to find out about job opportunities at the new school. “We want the people to know that when it comes to posts or jobs at the school, that it is not in our hands. It is the responsibility of the Department of Education to create new posts. “There are currently no new posts for educators and non-educators or support staff at Sunshine Special School. All posts have been filled,” said Kivedo. Whenever posts will become available, those interested must go through the professional procedure of applying and so forth at
the Department of Education. Learners are placed at the school through references and the Department of Education. It accommodates intellectually impaired learners and also children with Down Syndrome. “We are proud of our learners and their achievements and we are proud of our school. Sunshine learners excel on the sports field, cross country and our choir performs outstandingly. “We request the community kindly to respect our learners and to refrain from being judgemental. Let God’s sun shine on all of us, also on the learners from Sunshine” said Kivedo. The school was registered at the Department of Education on July 1st, 1991. Prior to this date it was registered as one of the Department of Mental Health’s educational projects to take care of children with special needs.
NASA experts speak in Bay on space and science Scientists from the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are delivering talks regarding space and science-related issues at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Games for intellectually impaired held in Metro The National SA Summer Age Group Games for intellectually impaired athletes will be hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay from 7 to 11 March. Around 750 athletes with an intellectual impairment, from all 9 provinces will travel to the Bay. These athletes will compete in 6 sport codes namely swimming, cricket, hockey, table tennis, blackball pool and
indoor rowing. Some athletes with Down Syndrome will compete in the codes of swimming and table tennis in preparation for the upcoming Trisome World Championship. Fees van sport by Bergsig ’n Totaal van 18 skole en sowat 800 sportseuns en - dogters is môre en Saterdag deel van Bergsig Spesiale Skool se fees van sport op Uitenhage. Dit is die eerste keer dat Bergsig so ’n groot sportfees aanbied en kragmetings sal plaasvind in rugby, netbal, sokker en tennis. Die plaaslike skole Muir College, HTS Dan-
iel Pienaar, John Walton en Linkside is maar enkele van die skole wat gaan deelneem. Verversing sal deur die loop van die sportfees te koop aangebied word. Wedstryde begin môre om 15:00 en duur tot 18:00. Saterdag skop die eerste wedstryde om 08:00 af en die laaste eindfluitjie blaas om 17:00.
