Mayor plans to restore ‘Garden Town’ N

elson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan said life would be breathed into the Uitenhage Town Hall with the appointment of senior municipal personnel in Uitenhage and hard work would be put in to restore the Garden Town brand Uitenhage used to carry.

This was said during the first instalment of the Mayoral Outreach which was held at the Allanridge Civic Centre.

“We have the will to solve your problems and know how to do it. I can assure you that we have solved much greater problems,” said Dr Danny Jordaan.

According to Kupido Baron, Acting Communications Director of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, assistant directors of different service delivery departments will be appointed to report for duty in Uitenhage with decision-making powers to directly respond to issues affecting residents and efforts such as the “love where you live” campaign to clean up the area.

“Executive directors reported to the community regarding current ongoing expenditure in Uitenhage Wards, efforts to curb water leaks, fix potholes and specific economic development opportunities that exist and

the review of high rates for public facilities.”

Other initiatives that were also highlighted included the planned construction of a desalination plant in the Metro, study outcomes regarding the development of the township economy, the ocean economy and redevelopment of Bayworld.

Last year the municipality hosted a council meeting at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre and Mayor Jordaan said another council meeting with a clear bias toward economic development for the area would be convened soon. (­Heilie Combrinck)

Porsche jaag toe nie vliegtuig weg HEILIE COMBRINCK Dit was ’n hittete gelyk-op-jaagtog in beide uitdagings tussen vliegtuig en motor tydens Saterdag se Wings-en-Wheels vliegskou buite Uitenhage.

“Die Porsche V8 het een groot stofstreep gespin van die een punt tot die ander. Oor die pylvak het die Whisper-vliegtuig goed ingehaal, maar hoe vinniger hy vlieg hoe verder moes hy gaan draai,” vertel Lourens Kruger, ’n organiseerder van die jaarlikse Wings & Wheels fees en Doug Davidson herdenkinglugskou.

Uiteindelik het die Porche en Whisper gelyk oor die wenstreep “gevlieg”. In die veteraanstryd tussen die 1929 Ford Model A en die 1940 Falke, het die spoednaalde nou nie so ver oorgekantel nie, maar tot vermaak van die toeskouers het die twee ook gelyk geëindig.

Volgens Kruger het die bywoningsgetalle na vanjaar se fees en lugskou verdubbel teenoor laasjaar se hoeveelheid toeskouers.

“Die fees groei jaarliks en dit dra by dat ons kan teruggee aan die gemeenskap, veral ten opsigte van die feesbegunstigdes, Oosterland Jeugsentrum en die Uitenhage Dierebeskermingsvereniging.” ’n Geluk by die ongeluk was dat burgemeester Danny Jordaan eerstehands die swak kragtoevoer na die vliegveld ervaar het.

“Die krag het uitgeskop tydens sy opening van die fees. In ons aansoek aan die munisipaliteit vir verbeterings by die vliegveld sal ons nou definitief vra vir groter kapasiteit kragtoevoer.”

Die organiseerders van die fees en lugskou bedank graag alle deelnemers, die hoofborge Algoa Steel, Klinicare-apteekgroep, KW Amusement, alle ander wat ’n bydrae gelewer het sowel as die publiek vir hulle ondersteuning.

Pat Unsworth, Chairperson of the Uitenhage Com­ munity Policing Forum and Sector Policing has the following message from this voluntary service: As CPF, we have come to appreciate the important role we have to play in the partnership we have with the South African Police Service. We work jointly in a concerted effort to meet the ever increasing challenges in the fight against anti-social behaviour and crime.

Monthly meetings for residents to attend The CPF encourages the community to attend the meetings held every first Thursday (17:00) of the month in conjunction with the Uitenhage police at the Church Street police station, to voice all concerns and discuss effective ways in which these may be addressed.

We enjoy well attended meetings and make concerted efforts to promote the CPF. The forum is also visible at the monthly Uitenhage

Market where they have a stand with banners.

Patrolling ­ how does it work The CPF has received sponsored reflective vests which are CPF branded, rendering high visibility whilst on duty. The Sector Policing group conducts weekly patrols. These volunteers do motorized and foot patrols and are the eyes and ears of the police. There are about 50 other patrollers handling their own area. Our ultimate goal is to have all areas operating in the same way, covering problematic or hot spot areas. We maintain radio and cell phone contact with shift commanders when on duty.

Effect on crime Our active duties definitely result in reduced crime. Continuous pamphlet distribution and interaction with the community has proved extremely effective. Door to door visits and our high visibility are maintained.

Through our pamphlets we aim to sensitize the community to various criminal activities and in particular hot spots to be aware of.

SPCA kennels full - homes desperately needed The Uitenhage SPCA kennels currently are fully occupied with many gorgeous dogs, puppies, cats and kittens which all are desperately in need of loving homes.

Therefore an adoption day will be held on Sunday together with a jumble sale to raise funds for the association. There will be a wide selection of second hand goods as well as clothing, books, toys, linen, balls of good quality mohair wool for sale with lots of bric-abrac available.

The kennels are situated in Schonland Street and

the gates will be open on Sunday between 10:00 and 12:00. The public are urged rather to consider adopting than shopping. This will complete the rescue of so many of the cats and dogs which find themselves in the SPCA’s care, by offering them a loving home of their own.

Public thanked for reacting to mother’s plea HEILIE COMBRINCK

T

he Uitenhage Lions Club wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to Life St George’s Hospital and the public for their immediate response regarding the UD News article “a mother’s plea for two hospital beds”.

Zenobia Olivier, the mother of twin boys Jacques and Heindrich (aged 24 years) both with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, appealed for two adjustable hospital beds. The beds needed to be able to move up and down to as-

sist the parents when it comes to bathing and changing the boys.

They were born premature at 27 weeks and because of a shortage of oxygen suffered brain damage at birth.

Lion President Juan Hay said, “A recipe for happiness is to relieve suffering rather than think only of your own suffering and we all really live when we live to give to others.”

St George’s Hospital, a member of Life Healthcare donated two hospital beds and even assisted with the moving of the beds into the residence. The UD community contribut-

ed cash donations that were used to purchase both feeding equipment and nutritional food for the twins.

“The Olivier family are on cloud nine and Zenobia in particular is such a happy and thankful lady,” said Lion Denis Murphy.

The donations were in response to an article published in the UD News of 25th February 2016.

Lion President Juan Hay extended an invitation to the community for donations of wheelchairs, commodes and walkers which in turn will be given to those in need in our

community at no cost.

Any family who still has any of the equipment and no longer uses it is requested to contact either of the Lion members mentioned below for collection purposes. )To this effect the community can contact Lion Robbie Effting of Despatch on 072 217 4798 or Lion Denis Murphy of Uitenhage on 083 651 7870. Warm weather spikes water demand Water supply to Uitenhage was disrupted earlier this week owing to one of the main water supply pipelines which burst on Monday morning.

The pipeline was isolated but repair teams experienced difficulty in accessing the site owing to its location, steep inclines and inclement weather.

“The recent warm weather resulted in an abnormally high water demand and reservoirs were unable to recover before the pipe burst occurred,” said Kupido Baron, Acting Communications Director of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

This resulted in higher lying suburbs being without water and more areas were affected later on. Water tankers were mobilised and deployed at strategic locations. (­Heilie Combrinck)

Arries, van Timothy Valley in die Baai, verkoop Die Burger (destyds Oosterlig) sedert 1970, vandat hy net 19 jaar oud was.

Hy doen dit wel nou effens stadiger, maar op 64 beweeg hy steeds “vlugvoetig” deur die verkeer om seker te maak dat alle lesers hul <George Arries (64) verkoop al vir 36 jaar koerante in Uitenhage, maar dié reis kom vandeesweek tot ’n einde.

Alumni to compile recipe book The Uitenhage High alumni organisation will be launching their very first recipe book during August 2016.

In order to give it a touch of local flavour and taste, former learners, teachers or interested persons are invited to be part of this book.

All wishing to participate in this endeavour are invited to supply the organisers with the following information: Name, maiden name, connection to the school (eg. former learner, parent, teacher, SGB member, invigilator), recipe, special memory about your time at school or about

the recipe, contact number and recipe source.

A surcharge of R10 will be payable for every recipe placed in the book.

According to Roshaan Pather, the proceeds of this endeavour will go towards providing Uitenhage High students who wish to further their tertiary studies with much needed financial relief.

Voordat hy koerante verkoop het, was hy ’n visserman. As hy vandag egter tussen dié twee jobs moet kies, kies hy oor en oor sy reis met dié dagblad.

“Ek onthou my eerste dag op die job asof dit gister was. ’n Woensdag. Ek kan net nie mooi onthou hoeveel koerante ek verkoop het nie. Die ouderdom darem,” het hy gespot.

“Om koerante te verkoop, was maar die beste keuse.”

Of daar ’n voorbladberig was wat hom altyd sal bybly, het hy geantwoord: “Daar was nou nie eintlik tyd om self die koerant te lees nie.

Vir my het dit gegaan om maar net elke dag die nuus aan die mense te kon verkoop.

“Dis veral die glimlagte wat my klante op

my moeë gesig kon plaas wat my sal bybly.

Vir nou moet ek rus en na my gesondheid kyk.”

Lance Jordaan, ’n inwoner van Uitenhage, is een van dié klante wat Oom Arries, soos hy bekend is, op die hoek van Kerkstraat sal mis.

“Oom Arries is maar nou een van daardie mense wat jou dag maak, al is hy ’n stillerige mens. Dis sy persoonlikheid wat jou aantrek.

Ek haal my hoed vir hom af wat op dié hoë ouderdom nog bereid was om op te staan, uit te gaan en geld te verdien,” het Jordaan gesê.

Vir Clive Adams, Arries se toesighouer, is dit sy stil, maar hardwerkende geaardheid wat respek afdwing.

“Ek laai Oom Arries elke oggend op en neem hom en 17 ander koerantverkopers na Uitenhage waar hy sy koerante verkoop. Hy is een van daardie mense wat altyd bereid is om te werk – of dit reën en of die son nou skyn.

Die jongklomp kan ’n ding of twee van hom leer.”

SA’s oldest English school celebrates 194th year HEILIE COMBRINCK

S

outh Africa’s oldest English-speaking high school, Muir College, will this weekend celebrate its 194th year during its Founders Weekend.

Its origin traces back to 1822, when a Scottish educationist, James Rose-Innes established Uitenhage’s first free government school in Cuyler Street on 12 July 1822 with 60 pupils.

The special guest during the Founders Dinner is former South African cricketer Dave Callaghan.

Callaghan was a member of a great SA Schools side in 1983 which toured England under the name Albatrosses. In Provincial cricket, he played much of his career in the Eastern province side which contained the strongest batting lineup at the time in the country.

His first-class career lasted 19 years, with time being spent in England with Suffolk and Nottinghamshire. Primarily a right-handed batsman, he was also a handy pace bowler.

The defining moment of his international career was an innings of 169 not out, made against New Zealand at Centurion during the Mandela Trophy in 1994.

Opening the batting, Callaghan made 169 off 143 balls and hit 4 sixes. He also took his career best figures of 3 for 32. Callaghan’s innings was his first after recovering from testicular cancer.

The Founders Dinner will be at 18:30 for 19:00 at the Muir College Hall and the Master of Ceremonies will be Daron Mann.

The dress is blazer and tie and the cost is R220 for adults and R140 for students. It includes a three course meal and there will be a cash bar.

Unieke VLV-Despatch resepteboek saamgestel ’n Unieke resepteboek met wenresepte, wenke en stories oor VLV-Despatch se baasbaksters van die afgelope 80 jaar, is as ’n huldeblyk aan dié raakvatvroue saamgestel.

Die bekendstelling van dié resepteboek is een van die hoogtepunte van die VLV Sirkel Middelland-konferensie wat met VLV Despatch as gasvrou eerskomende Woensdag by Sumcay aangebied word.

“Despatch is die eerste tak van Sirkel Middelland wat dié jaarlikse konferensie in een dag gaan aanbied. Dit strek gewoonlik oor twee dae. Dit verg deeglike beplanning en goeie tydsbestuur om die konferensie in een dag deur te voer,” het Wilma Erasmus, VLV Despatch se tesourier gesê.

Sirkel Middelland bestaan uit 15 takke en dit is vanjaar die 82ste konferensie. Die hoofspreker is Madalé Ferreira, ’n boervrou van

Mooihoek in die Hankey-distrik, waar sy onder andere met aarbeie boer. Sy is onlangs deur Nedbank aangewys as ’n sakevroue kategorie-wenner vir haar entrepreneursvernuf.

Sportgeriewe na rugbyhelde vernoem H

oërskool Despatch het vanjaar besluit om oudskoliere Danie Gerber en Johan “Rassie” Erasmus te vereer deur die sport terrein en pawiljoen na hulle te vernoem.

Danie Gerber het vier jaar lank vir Hoërskool Despatch se eerste rugbyspan gespeel en in 1977 sy skoolloopbaan hier voltooi. Hy het 3 jaar vir Cravenweek-spanne uitgedraf en ook 3 jaar vir SA Skole gespeel. In sy laaste skooljaar was hy kaptein van die SA Skolerugbyspan.

Gerber vertel dat die hoofseun van daardie jare hom op sy eerste skooldag gevra het om saam te gaan rugby oefen. In die eerste 20 minute van die oefening het hy vier drieë gedruk en sommer dadelik in die o.14A-span opgeneem. Die res is geskiedenis.

Gerber het 24 toetse vir Suid-Afrika gespeel oor ‘n tydperk van 12 jaar. Hy het 115 wedstryde vir die OP, 40 vir die WP en 24 vir die Vrystaat gespeel. Hy is een van die beste senters van alle tye.

Rassie Erasmus was vanaf 1986-1990 by Hoërskool Despatch op die banke en het vir die eerste-rugbyspan vanaf 1988-1990 gespeel.

Vanaf 1997 tot 2011 het hy in 36 toetse vir die Springbokke uitgedraf. Hy het ook die voorreg gehad om SA tydens die 1999 Wêreldbeker te verteenwoordig.

Deesdae is Erasmus sowel as Gerber betrokke by afrigting waar hulle hul kennis en ondervinding terugploeg.

Erasmus se raad aan die jongmense van vandag is om jou te omring met “goeie pelle” wat jou ondersteun, opbou, en in jou glo.

Dit is vir Erasmus en Gerber beide ‘n groot eer dat die sportgronde en pawiljoen na hulle vernoem is. Die twee het gedurigdeur tydens die vernoeming met mekaar geskerts en hulle was beslis vir elke Despatch-leerder ‘n groot inspirasie.

Guard against historical municipal debt Recent findings by the Supreme Court of Appeal that a new owner of a property can, in certain limited circumstances, be held liable for historical municipal debt of a previous owner has raised many concerns and questions within the property industry.

“With the collaboration of the municipality and the transferring attorney, it is possible to ensure all historical municipal debt is paid in full at the time of the sale,” says Snyman.

This is according to Jansen Snyman, Founding Director of Snymans Incorporated Attor-

neys, who says in response to this, the City of Johannesburg issued a statement reiterating the processes in place to ensure all municipal debt is paid in full at the time of a property sale.

This involves the City of Johannesburg informing the relevant transferring attorney of the outstanding balance for municipal costs that are due at the time of the property sale.

The transferring attorney or sheriff involved in the transfer of the property is then responsible for ensuring payment for these costs is made before the remaining proceeds are re-

Acknowledging the necessity to protect property buyers from the risks of historical municipal debt, Snyman says the City of Johannesburg appealed to attorneys and sheriffs to work together with the municipality in this regard.

“Both the judgment and the statement issued by the City of Johannesburg reinforce the importance of attorneys taking responsibility for checking and ensuring all municipal debts of the previous owner are paid prior to transfer, and that consumers are well informed of the processes and requirements for a successful

Addo golf day in aid of counter-poaching The SANPark’s Honorary Rangers of Addo Elephant National Park are organising their 11th annual golf day which will be hosted on Thursday, 5 May at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club.

With the continual threat of poaching within SANParks all money raised on the day will be used to fund counter-poaching activities within Addo Elephant National Park.

Addo Elephant National Park conserves the “Big 7”, including Southern Right Whales and Great White Shark.

Now the third largest national park in South Africa, Addo Elephant National Park has expanded to conserve a wide diversity of biodiversity, landscapes, fauna and flora. Stretching from the semiarid Karoo area in the north around

Darlington Dam, over the rugged Zuurberg Mountains, through the Sundays River Valley and south to the coast between Sunday’s River Mouth and Bushman’s River Mouth.

It covers about 180 000 hectares (444 700 acres) and includes the Bird and St Croix Island groups.

Companies and individuals are invited to enter a 4-ball at R1 400 per team and/or sponsor a tee or green for as little as R500.

Madibaz swimming coach honoured Nedbank Madibaz swimming team trainer Mark Edge was named Coach of the Year at the recent Eastern Cape Sport and Recreation Awards in Port Elizabeth.

The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture hosted the awards in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Sports Confederation to honour locals for their contribution to sports development in the region.

“I was extremely proud to receive this award,” said Edge, a former Springbok swimmer and lifesaver linked to NMMU’s high performance centre.

“Being a swimming coach is more of a passion than a job,” he said, reflecting on a 35year coaching career. “The fact that I absolutely love what I do, motivates me every day.”

Last year, eight of Edge’s charges competed internationally at events such as the All-Africa Games, African Junior Swimming Championships, Fina Swimming World Cup and Commonwealth Youth Games.

According to him, they brought home more than 20 medals from these galas.

Two of his swimmers, Alard and Alaric Basson, formerly from Uitenhage Convent Primary and Muir College, were finalists in the Sportsman of the Year category.

“It is a great achievement for them,” said the institution’s aquatics manager Melinda Goosen.”

She said the brothers had represented South Africa at the All-African Games, the World Cup and University Games in 2015.

Edge said his swimmers are now focusing on next month’s South African National Aquatic Championships which will be held in Durban, and double as the forthcoming Olympic trials.

RANGERS MOTOR SPARES UITENHAGE 200

Enduro racing at Jachtvlakte E

nduro racing fans are invited to bring along their friends and family to experience all the speed, dust and smell of fresh 2-stroke along with roars of the 4T Thumpers during the Rangers Motor Spares Uitenhage 200 at Jachtvlakte.

It will be hosted by Rover Motorcycle Club, which is located in Schoenmakerskop and spans a history of more than 50 years, and is still going strong.

Every year Rover hosts a Regional Enduro Championship Series that is held in surrounding areas with a wide range of classes to choose from depending on racers’ ability and age. The Rangers Motor Spares Uitenhage 200 is the next race on the 2016 Rover Enduro Championship Calendar and will be held at Jachtvlakte on the outskirts of Uitenhage on Saturday, March 19th.

This year the Rover Enduro series comprises 8 races and racing classes are: Under 21, Club Silver (17+), Club Senior (38+), Club

Masters (46+), Club Vets (50+), Club Open (Open).

“In addition to these classes which are aimed at the more serious riders, Rover has introduced a Weekend Warrior Class or WOW, which is aimed at riders young and old and quad riders who want to experience the thrill and excitement of a racing environment either as a social rider or competing with other WOW riders,” said CJ Basson from Rover Motorcycle Club.

“All social riders are invited to join in the fun and ride the race loop with racers to feel and experience the high speed thrill of stretching your bike’s throttle cables in a fast-paced race.”

There are a few basic safety compliances that need to be adhered to for both rider and bike and these will be detailed when submitting your online entry.

- CJ BASSON each class will have its own own number of prescribed loops to complete.

All riders and first time riders must register on www.Race Control.co.za for the events prior to race day which are all sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and one day licences are open to those who would like to try it out first.

“New riders will be assisted with the entry process and one-day MSA licences can be paid on the morning of the race. All riders must enter online on Race Control before the race day,” said Basson.

WOW Class Competitive Race costs are R200 for the MSA Licence and R100 for the race entry and WOW Social Riders are R200.

Quad riders are welcome to ride and will be accommodated and ride in either of the WOW Classes. Annual MSA WOW Licences can also be obtained at R300 for the year and then riders are only required to pay the race entries on race days.

-Only WOW Class Non-competitive riders will allowed to enter on the morning of the race.

The Rangers Motor Spares Uitenhage 200 will be a spectator friendly event with approximately 10 km of spectacular racing scenery in full view of the immediate Jachtvlakte area. Spectators can follow the orange markers once turned off on to the Jachtvlakte gravel road.

“Please be extremely careful when riding to the spectator and pit areas and obey all race signage and marshalls instructions. They are there to look out for both spectators’ and riders’ safety.”

Rover has also arranged for catering and food (burgers, boerewors rolls), cool drinks and coffee which will be on sale throughout the day.
