ie diefstal en vandalisme van sitrusboorde in die Sondagsriviervallei hou ’n risiko in vir duisende werkgeleenthede en moet dadelik gestuit word. Só het Vicky Knoetze, DA-LPW vir die gebied, in ’n verklaring gesê in reaksie op klagtes dat die polisie nie werk maak van klagtes wat by hulle ingedien word nie. Knoetze en Bobby Stevenson, die DA se LUR vir veiligheid en sekuriteit, het die gebied Vrydag besoek. Sy het gesê hulle het die polisie gevra om die aangeleentheid na die Valke te verwys, want die betrokkenes is klaarblyklik ’n goed opgeleide organisasie. “Ons het aan die bevelvoerder van die Addopolisiekantoor verduidelik hoe belangrik dit is om die sindikaat wat vir die diefstal en vandalisme verantwoordelik is, aan die man te bring. Boere in die gebied worstel al minstens drie jaar met die probleem, het Hannes de Waal, hoof-
bestuurder van die Sondagsrivier Sitruskoöperasie, gesê. “Die hoofsaaklik uitvoer-suurlemoene, word snags per vragmotor en met bakkies uit die boorde weggery. Die omvang van die skade word nog bepaal, maar dit is etlike miljoene rande per jaar. CANSA RELAY FOR LIFE
Leos named best youth team at relay T
he Alpha Leo Club, consisting of learners from Uitenhage and Despatch, participated in the Cansa Relay for Life held in Port Elizabeth and managed to raise a total of R6 098.
The Leos joined hundreds of people at Victoria Park High to relay for 12 hours in celebration of cancer survivors and also to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. With the Leos fundraising prior the event, they raised the funds through the Muir College teacher bidding, Hoërskool Brandwag’s Pink Civvies day, Strelitzia’s Leap Year donations, Uitenhage High’s cake sales and the fundraising on the relay night which consisted of popcorn and cupcake sales and manning the gate. Captains Aphiwe Zinto, Trent Burness and their team managed to complete 107 laps during the Night Relay for Life event. For this the Leos received the Best Youth Team award. “As much as we put in - in all that we did, I just did not expect that our team from Uitenhage would win any award,” said Leo President Aphiwe Zinto.

die sowat 1.8 meter diep en 2 meter breë gat toe te gooi. Na byna ’n maand en ’n half is die gat nou uiteindelik toe. Frans Swanepoel, ’n sakeman van Despatch met belange in eiendom en kennis oor munisipale aangeleenthede het gesê, meeste inwoners is nie bewus dat die gedeelte van die oprit wat strek vanaf die pad se randsteen tot op die grens van die erf, munisipale eiendom is nie. “Inwoners wat hierdie gedeelte met plaveisel of sement verfraai moet na regte eers aansoek doen by die munisipaliteit, aangesien dit hulle eiendom is,” het Swanepoel gesê. Wanneer ’n inwoner aansoek doen om dié deel van die oprit te verfraai, word ’n dokument onderteken waarin die munisipaliteit nie verantwoordelik gehou kan word vir enige skade soos byvoorbeeld na die opkap om ’n waterlek te herstel nie. “Die rede hoekom die gat vir meer as ’n maand oopgelos is weet ek nie. Dit is onaanvaarbaar. Gewoonlik is daar ’n kort waarnemingsperiode na herstelwerk om seker te maak alle waterlekke is wél herstel. Maar dit duur definitief nie ’n maand lank nie.” Swanepoel sê voorts, “ons weet almal teen dié tyd dat daar ’n groot tekort aan munisipale mannekrag is. Dit jaag mense se stresvlakke op om te wag vir dienste wat nie gelewer word nie. “Ons leef in ’n tyd waarin dit vir inwoners beter is om pro-aktief op te tree. “Dinge loop verkeerd, maar probeer om self ’n verskil te maak. Want dit is ’n vermorsing van tyd en energie met ’n proses wat jy weet nêrens heengaan nie.”
Maths holiday fun at Science Centre

The Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage will be hosting an exciting educational holiday programme next week for learners.
“The theme of this holiday programme is ‘Sustainable use of natural resources’. The purpose is to instil the right attitude in learners towards the use of natural resources,” said Singathwa Poswa from the NMB Science & Technology Centre. “The learners will be taught regarding the importance of natural resources and ways of preserving them. There will also be an hour long maths session every day.” The holiday programme will run from 22 to 24 March, daily between 10:00 and 14:00. Learners aged 6 up to 16 years are invited to attend. The cost is R10 per child and a limited number of learners will be accepted, therefore booking is essential. The centre is situated in Lower Drostdy Street, Uitenhage. NATIONAL WATER WEEK
Save water there is no substitute
I
ronically, it has taken a drought to make South Africans more aware of our precious water resources. But, as with the big droughts of the past, the message remains the same: save water because water has no substitute. The National Water Week runs from 14-22 March under the theme “Water for People, Water by People”. During this week, South Africans are urged to be mindful of people who still do not have access to this basic service and collectively pledge to save water in households, institutions of learning and industries. “There can be few South Africans who are unaware that the country is currently in the
grip of the worst drought in decades,” said Margaret-Ann Diedricks, Director General: Department of Water and Sanitation. The drought is also threatening the economy, with billions of rand lost in the maize and sugar cane sectors alone. Government is working hard to mitigate the impact. The Department of Water and Sanitation, together with team South Africa, is working hard to provide short-term water needs. According to Diedricks, groundwater is one of South Africa’s most under-utilised resources. “Water experts estimate we have tapped only half of what is available. The department has adopted a more scientific approach to the
location of boreholes, taking into account the local geology as well as estimated yield of this underground water source to ensure money is not wasted.” News reports referring to the recent “borehole business boom” underscore these efforts. Another initiative promoted by the department is recycled water. “While this is happening already in some areas, the use of recycled water is set to increase greatly over the next few years. Once viewed with revulsion, many South Africans are now starting to realise that recycled water is better than no water at all. In effect, there is no other option but to recycle. “One bit of good news is that the El Nino
phenomenon - responsible for below-average rainfall and blistering heat across large parts of both South and Southern Africa - appears to have peaked. “Climate experts now believe it will be over by June or July this year, notwithstanding the persisting above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall.” Attempts to mitigate the impact of the drought and conserve water cannot be the work of the department alone. Community involvement is essential. South Africans need to become actively involved in conserving and using water sparingly, complying with whatever restrictions are in force, and reporting and fixing leaks.
Your voice is needed to protect Bay marine life The new Addo Marine Protected Area (MPA) has been proposed by the Minister of Environmental Affairs together with another 21 MPAs in South Africa. “Marine Protected Areas are crucial for healthy marine ecosystems. They are beneficial for the recovery of exploited fish stocks, ensuring the sustainable exploitation of our marine resources, hence jobs and food security. “They also offer safe havens for many species and top predators’ populations,” said Dr Lorien Pichegru of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth. According to her Algoa Bay is home to more than half of the world’s African penguin population. Their population crashed by 70%

in the last 10 years, and they need this MPA. “Algoa Bay also hosts beautiful reefs, the largest pods of bottlenose dolphins in the world and hundreds of whales coming to give birth here every year.” )A public participation meeting, open to all, is planned today at 10:00 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Reception Room at the City Hall (Port Elizabeth) to discuss the draft regulations for the MPA. A very common occurrence in our communities is that matriculants pass matric and owing to financial challenges, this is where their dream ends. The purpose of this fund-raising event is to set up a fund to where academically deserving and financially needy students can apply, even if it is just to pay their registration fees. Ghauderen Coetzee-de Vos, an organiser of the event said they are appealing to schools, institutions, corporates and alumni associations to purchase a table of ten seats at R2 000 per table. Individuals also have the option of attending at R170 per person. “Prof Jansen will make a short speech which will set the scene for comments and
questions. “The South African teaching environment is challenging and he might just be what some teacher-leaders and teachers need to uplift their spirits and to inspire doing ‘business unusual’,” said Coetzee-de Vos. She explained that those involved with the trust would give further assistance to successful applicants in applying for bursaries and just some form of mentorship on overcoming the challenges that first year students face. “Any matriculant who has proof of acceptance at any university in South Africa will be able to apply to this fund. “This initiative is taking place as there is a need for individuals in our communities to do more in taking back our communities.” )The dinner event will start at 19:00. Despatch klas van ‘65 hou reünie Hoërskool Despatch se matriekklas van 1965 het opgeruk na Kaapstad om hulle 50ste skoolreünie te vier. In totaal het 35 oud-klasmaats hierdie onvergeetlike saamkuier bygewoon. Een van dié oudleerders, Verna Schonken skryf uit Gauteng, dat dit opwindend ws om mekaar weer te sien. “Dit was veral ’n voorreg om in die geselskap te wees van ons oud-onderwysers, meneer Jannie Fourie, meneer John Looch en ook dr. Edwin Whittle. Teen dié tyd lyk ons almal redelik eenders met ons grys koppe en plooie, maar die respek en waardering wat hulle tydens ons skool loopbaan geniet het, verdien hulle steeds,” sê Schonken. Die groep het met toerbusse deur die stad gery, by ’n wynplaas vir ontbyt en wynproe aangedoen, Seal Island per boot besoek en heerlik by Snoekies in Houtbaai uitgespan vir middagete. “Lam en tam het hulle teen son-onder die dag by die Kaapse Waterfront met oulaas koffie afgesluit en daarna is elkeen weer sy eie koers in met net goeie herinneringe aan ons besonderse reünie.” Tydens dié klas se 40 jaar reünie in 2005 op Despatch, is ‘n reünie-fonds gestig met die oog op die befondsing van toekomstige reünies. Die skenkings van die oud-leerders het dit moontlik gemaak om die 45 en 50 jaar reünies te befonds. “Dankie aan Fanie Marais en Johan Stumke wat die dag gereël het en aan almal wat moeite gedoen het om te deel in die besonderse mylpaal. “Dankie aan Hoërskool Despatch waar ons wortels lê en aan ons Hemelse Vader wat ons met oorvloed seën. Aan almal wie se paaie gekruis het met Hoërskool Despatch, asook die wat tans daar betrokke is, Blaas Hoog Die Vlam!”

We might feel powerless when faced with some of the dangers on South Africa’s roads, but there is something we can all do to protect ourselves and make the roads a little safer. Make sure you are not distracted while driving. Are you guilty of texting while driving? Statistics of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) show that many South African drivers text while driving. In an effort to combat this distracting behaviour, Arrive Alive launched a campaign claiming “If you text and drive you’re a killer”.

School hosts golf day as fundraiser Uitenhage Primary School’s first Savalot sponsored open golf day will be held on Monday, March 21st, which happens to be a public holiday. The first prize is an entry into a competition at the Mossel Bay Golf Club for a four ball plus one night’s stay (and breakfast) at Santos Express Train Lodge. The runner-up will win a weekend for two at My Pond Hotel in
Port Alfred. There are also various other great prizes to be won.
