Farewell to VW’s longest serving woman O

n 1 April 1969, Julia Potgieter walked into Volkswagen for the first time, 47 years later, she retired from Volkswagen with her head held high after an amazing career. At a special tea held in her honour she was able to reminisce with VWSA Chairman and MD, Thomas Schaefer, about her years of service in the company. Julia is a special woman at VWSA, loved by many and respected by all her finance colleagues. Not only is she the longest serving woman at VWSA, but currently the longest serving employee. A career spanning almost half a century, all of which was spent in the Finance Division has given Julia many wonderful memories, such as going for a swim at lunch time in the company pool and the introduction of the computer. The Managing Director of the day was Albert Theunissen, VWSA was building the Beetle, the 411 and the T3 and total production volume for the year was a mere 34 133 units compared to the 2015 figure of 120 000. Julia says that she has always enjoyed working at VWSA and walks away with many friends and great memories. Her sage advice for her younger colleagues was to “Always keep a back-up” – so relevant in the age of electronic communication! Five years ago Julia was diagnosed with breast cancer, but says that the support she received from her Volkswagen Family was a blessing, “The company was so understand-

Residents’ call to keep Despatch a safe town HEILIE COMBRINCK

ommitted to enhancing safety for people living, working and visiting Despatch, the town’s community policing forum recently opened its first official office at 40 Main Street. Despatch Sector 2 Crime Forum chairperson, Jabe de Kock said, “The establishment of this office reflects an important declaration by Despatch Sector Policing, to be more visible, to keep criminals away from our community and to build continuously a trustworthy relationship with the community.” They previously operated from an office at the Despatch Police Station, but their new office is ideally situated, and clearly visible, in the centre of town. It renders services to those who need assistance after being affected by criminal related issues. “We are not the police. We can not act on behalf of them. We are residents who voluntarily serve as watchdogs, being the eyes and ears for the police, security services and community. “We are in constant contact with the police and provide a channel through which the community can play a meaningful role in

crime prevention through visibility and coordinated patrols,” said De Kock. He thanked local businesses for their support and also taking pride in Despatch and its residents and urge more residents also to get involved in safeguarding their neighbourhood. According to one of the Despatch Sector 2 Crime Forum members, Francois Fouché, “The town boasts a close-knit community with residents being proud to live here. First female to led VWSA paint shop REPORTER The beginning of March 2016, marked a significant day at VWSA, as Faith Lelaka took up the position of Unit Head of the Paint Shop. This is the first time a black woman has been appointed at this level in the production environment. Faith started as an in-service trainee in February 1999 and has spent most of her VW career in and around the paint shop. In 16 years she has worked her way from a technician in the process lab to the production line and into leadership. “I realised early on that I needed to be involved in as many aspects of the job as possible and if that meant getting into a tank to measure paint levels or running multiple tests to check paint viscosity, that’s what I was going to do!” remarked Faith

Faith is a wife of 10 years and the mother of 4 children. So she knows what it is like to juggle work and home life. She places a great deal of emphasis on family life and says that “finding the balance between home and work is a challenge that she is constantly working on”. When asked how she felt about the appointment, Faith remarked “I am honoured and humbled by the recognition I have received

through this appointment. I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Isabel Faurie, Helpende Hand se maatskaplike werker sê die meer as 570 000 pleegouers aan die einde van 2013 het tot 450 000 gedaal in 2016. Solidariteit Helpende Hand het ’n spesiale platform bekendgestel om die tekort aan

pleegouers die hoof te bied deur die proses vir potensiële pleegouers makliker te maak. Potensiële pleegouers worstel met heelwat vrae oor pleegsorg en dit verhinder hulle om hulself as pleegouers beskikbaar te stel. Dit is een van die redes waarom Helpende Hand die platform www.pleegsorg.co.za geskep het waar hierdie vrae beantwoord kan word. “Daar is veral in die Oos-Kaap ’n groot tekort aan pleegouers en gesinne wat hul wonings as plek van veiligheid in ’n krisis kan aanbied,” sê Faurie. “In die Oos-Kaap het die getal pleegouers in die laaste paar jaar geweldig gedaal tot net oor 107 000 pleeg-ouers in een van die digs bevolkte provinsies in die land. Honderde kinders is op soek na ’n liefdevolle huis en voornemende pleegouers moenie bang wees om in te spring en ’n verskil te maak nie.” Alhoewel Helpende Hand nie oor die statutêre magte beskik om kinders in pleegsorg te plaas nie, is hulle vanweë hul betrokkenheid by armoede onder wit mense bewus van gebreke in die stelsel. The Uitenhage police urge the community to be more vigilant when doing electronic transactions. This warning comes after police received several reports by people engaging in online transactions. The reports relate especially to goods and services advertised on line. In most incidents perpetrators lured victims into paying huge amounts of cash through bank transfers or other payment methods for goods or services, which they never received even after payment was done. Victims also purchase products that are advertised through the internet or social media. These items are never delivered and include anything worth buying.

Myburg races for hearing Metro se landbouprojekte ly miljoene se verliese

Peter Myburg, former Mr PE 2013 and old Muirite, has challenged himself to finish the IronMan 2016 on April 10th, in order to give a child with a hearing disability the chance of hearing. Myburg made a bet with a corporate friend to pay for the hearing aid if he (Myburg) manages to complete the IronMan race, which consists of a 3.8km swim, 180.2km cycle and a 42.2 run. As an ambassador for the South African Audio Association, Myburg says “I’m doing IronMan to prove to people that no matter your disability big or small, you are capable of doing anything you put your mind to.” Not only is Myburg competing in the race to try to fund a child in need of a hearing aid, but he’s taking part to create awareness about his campaign that he started: #RacingForHearing. The focus of his campaign is to create awareness and inform the public about the importance of hearing and how necessary is it for people with hearing loss or impairments to have hearing aids. The prices of a hearing aid range from R5 000 up to R65 000 according to the Ear Institute South Africa. Myburg is the business owner of Grand Slam Surfacing as well as Beards and Guns and the founder of the NPO Love2Hear. He also is a co-presenter on Afternoon Express Talk Show on SABC3. He matriculated at Muir College and graduated at the University of the Free State with a BCom in Human Resource Management.

How to take the ‘scary’ out of auctions With the economy in slow-mode, the number of property auctions is expected to increase – along with the number of prospective buyers looking for bargain homes at prices below market value. However, says Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group, buying a house or flat on auction can be a risk for inexperienced homebuyers. “If they do not know much about the area in which the property is situated, for example, or about current market trends in this area, they run the risk of overpaying.

“So the first thing that buyers who are considering an auction property should do is seek the advice of an experienced estate agent that is familiar with the area and able to provide a comprehensive market analysis (CMA). This will include details of recent sales of similar properties in the area such as the asking prices, how long the properties were on the market and the actual selling prices of those which sold fastest. “The agent will also be able to tell them about the area generally and whether home values are trending up or down, which they

Phillipa’s rowing quest to be best HEILIE COMBRINCK Since the first day Phillipa Robinson (14) sat in a scull and experienced rowing, she knew this is a sport that she would like to be the best in. During 2013, Rosemary Brunette, the coach of Zwartkops Rowing Club (ZRC) visited schools to give a presentation regarding rowing as a sport. “Phillipa loves water sport and is a keen swimmer. She was immediately interested in rowing. The day she took to the river, it was love at first row for her,” said Juanita Robinson, a single parent who takes pride in her daughter’s dedication to be the best in this sport. Phillipa excelled from the start. She attended the SA Junior Rowing Championships during 2014, 2015 and 2016. Now she is practising for the SA Junior Nationals which will be held from April 30th to May 1st at Roode-

plaat Dam, Pretoria. “It is a first for me at this nationals and I really, really want to do good,” said Phillipa. She will be accompanied by four other girls as well as boys from the ZRC development team. “Each of the rowers need to raise their own funds to be able to attend the nationals. Rowing is a rare and selective sport, therefore it is expensive,” said Juanita. It is Phillipa’s dream to have her own scull, but a good scull costs about R75 000. In raising funds, the mother and daughter team makes rootis which they sell at work and school. Phillipa is a Grade 8 learner at Daniel Pienaar THS. They will also have a chicken braai during the first weekend in April. As as a single mum it’s difficult for Juanita to maintain her daughter’s sport interest. Therefore they request the public for their support of the rooti sales and chicken braai. )For rooti orders call Juanita Robinson on 079 018 5150 or 041 988 8229.

Les Barnes, who was sports editor of Die Oosterlig for 25 years will celebrate his 80th birthday on Tuesday, March 29. Les and his wife Elizabeth, have three sons, Peter, David and Paul and seven grandchildren – six at Grey Junior and one at Collegiate Junior. His sons are the owners of Sunridge SuperSpar and the Despatch SuperSpar (Paul Barnes). Les has been associated with the Port Elizabeth athletics club and Eastern Province athletics since 1952. He was secretary of his club at the age of 18 and later became chairman – a position he held for many years. He has been the life president of the club for the past five years. Les and his club were awarded national colours for administration which included the organisation of the former excellent Vernon Barnes Memorial meetings. He is a former national cross-country selector and was appointed manager of the national cross-country team but had to withdraw because of the death of his brother.
