ributes are pouring in after the sudden death of the Principal of Uitenhage’s Strelitzia High School.

On Saturday André Oosthuizen was visiting his family in Hankey when he suffered a suspected heart attack. Omar Neilsen, acting Principal and childhood friend, described Oosthuizen as a man with a heart for others. “His death is a big blow and a huge shock

to all. He would have deprived himself in order to help another. Education has lost a great man. He was brilliant and an authority in the field of teaching.” Nielsen said that Oosthuizen had not been ill, and had presumably suffered a heart attack. He had just recently undergone a full medical examination and no problem had been found. The Principal of Riebeek College, Marilyn Woods, and the school have expressed their sympathies via their Facebook page.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone at Strelitzia. He was a wonderful, human principal, teacher and colleague whose friendliness will be missed by all who knew him”, the inscription states. In other inscriptions Oosthuizen is described as a very good teacher. “What a wonderful man. We worked so well together.” Reads an entry by Felicity Nelson, a teacher at Uitenhage High School. On Monday the Eastern Cape Education Department expressed its sympathies to the

Oosthuizen family and the Strelitzia staff and pupils. Oosthuizen’s sudden death follows just months after that of Frayne Marupen, Head of McCarthy Comprehensive High School in Uitenhage. He leaves his wife Elrea and two children, Dewald and Sonja. )On Monday another educator from Uit enhage, Roux Brand from Daniel Pienaar THS, passedaway after a tragic road acci dent. (See p. 3)

Ferreira se 100ste verjaardag is op 23 Maart met twee spesiale koeke, dosyne rose en sang gevier - ’n mylpaal waarvoor sy sê daar geen geheim is nie. “Jy moet besig bly. Ek glo dit is nét die krag van die Here, my verstand makeer niks.” Hoewel sy sukkel om te hoor, skort niks met haar geheue nie. Veral oor haar skooldae in Steytlerville toe sy as ’n nooi Deyzel saam met haar ses broers en suster ’n plaasskool bygewoon het. “Die skool was baie ver, ons het soms met donkies gery, maar as die donkies nie daar was nie, moes ons loop. Soms was ons dan laat vir klas en dan moes ons laat agterbly, en soms as ons moes agterbly, het ons net weggehardloop,” het sy laggend vertel.

Sy is in 1916 in Steytlerville op die plaas Wolwekraal gebore. Van haar sibbe is nog net Hennie Deyzel (95) oor wat steeds op Wolwekraal boer. Ferreira het vier kinders, 13 kleinkinders, 30 agterkleinkinders en tien agter-agterkleinkinders. Twee kleinkinders en ’n agterkleinkind is intussen oorlede. “Vir my ma se ouderdom is sy baie gesond, sy loop nog op haar eie en haar geheue is nog mooi,” het haar seun Hennie Botha (68) gesê. Ferreira, wat vir die tweede keer ’n weduwee geword het in 1993, het agt maande gelede na die Valleihof-tehuis verhuis ná 20 jaar in die Wes-Kaap. Die klein tehuis bied woonplek aan 77 inwoners waarvan Ferreira nou die oudste is.

Onderwyser sterf toe hy wiel uit pad wegvat ALVENÉ APPOLLIS ’n Onderwyser van Uitenhage se edel daad Maandagmiddag om ’n weggooiwiel van die pad net buite Robertson te verwyder, het hom sy lewe gekos toe ’n minibus hom getref het. Roux Brand (61), ’n Afrikaans-onderwyser aan die Hoër Tegniese Skool Daniel Pienaar het verlede week sy skool se rugbyspan na ’n rugbytoernooi by die Drostdy Tegniese Hoërskool in Worcester vergesel. Brand en sy vrou het in hul private motor na en van die toernooi gereis omdat hulle eers ’n paar dae in Mosselbaai wou deurbring voordat die skool volgende week heropen. Die wiel wat in die pad was, het op ’n blinde draai gelê. Hy wou dit juis verwyder om ’n moontlike ongeluk hier te voorkom. “Die leerders en ander onderwysers het in die skool se minibussies gery, maar Roux en sy vrou was ’n klein entjie vooruit,” het Nico Claassen, Daniel Pienaar se hoof, gister gesê. ’n Quantum-minibus, wat kerkgangers van Mosselbaai na Vredendal vervoer het, het Brand getref. “Toe die bussie om die blinde draai kom, het die bestuurder probeer uitswaai. Roux het uit die pad probeer spring, maar dit was te laat. Die ongeluk was niemand se skuld nie. Dis net ironies dat sy liefdesdaad sy lewe gekos het,” het Claassen gesê. Roux se vrou, Annette, het die ongeluk sien gebeur waar sy langs die pad vir hom gewag het. Sy is tans by hul vakansiehuis in Mosselbaai.

“Ons is almal vreeslik geruk. Gelukkig het die leerders nie die ongeluk sien gebeur nie,” het Claassen gesê. “Die bestuurders het die bussies ’n entjie verder van die ongelukstoneel geparkeer. Van die onderwysers het teruggestap. “Teen dié tyd het paramedici hom gestabiliseer en hy het nog met hulle gesels. Maar hy het veelvuldige beserings opgedoen, veral aan sy onderlyf. Hy het ook kopbeserings gehad en sy bene was sleg gebreek.” Hy is in die Robertson-hospitaal opgeneem waar hy later aan sy beserings beswyk het. Brand het in 2010 by Daniel Pienaar aangesluit waar hy ook vir ’n ruk rugbyafrigter was en later wedstrydkoördineerder. Vir die onderwysers hier was hy ’n staatma-

ker, ’n vriend en ’n man met ’n buitengewone passie vir sy beroep. Vir sy leerders was hy ’n steunpilaar en die “koelste ou onnie” ooit. “Dis hoe ons Meneer geken het: hy wou altyd moontlike probleme vir ander uit die weg ruim, al was dit ten koste van homself,” het Aletta West, een van sy oudleerders, gister gesê. “Hy was verlede jaar ons graadhoof en die een wat saam met ons gebraai het om ons gees te bou. Ouderdom was vir hom net ’n getal. Ander se behoeftes, ook sy leerders s’n, was vir hom prioriteit.” Ao. Cecile Groenewald van die polisie in Ashton het gesê ’n saak van strafbare manslag word ondersoek.

What does the Leo Club do? T

he Leo Club is a youth organisation under the auspices of the Lions Club International, thus the local Uitenhage/Despatch Alpha Leo Club falls under the auspices of the Uitenhage Lions Club. The word LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity. The objective of a Leo Club is to provide the youth opportunities for development and to contribute to society, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community. “Leos conduct various projects in the fields of health care, elders, children, disabled, literacy and education, and self-development,” said Aphiwe Zinto, President of the Uitenhage/Despatch Alpha Leo Club. The local club consists of 6 pupils from 7 schools in the Uitenhage and Despatch area namely Muir College, Riebeek College, Daniel Pienaar THS, Uitenhage High, Brandwag, Despatch and Strelitzia High. The club’s annual fundraisers are the for-

mal JTC Ball and JTC Talent Show. Proceeds are donated to the chosen benefactors. Present in 140 countries with over 160,000 members, the Leo Club is the largest youth club of voluntary character in the world. Entries awaited for music competition for beginners

The regional branch of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) will be hosting its annual Mini Maestros music competition in Despatch during June. The competition focuses on music pupils between the ages of 5 and 13 years who are in the beginner, initial and Grade 1 phases of musical tuition. Each participant will receive a certificate and a report sheet characterised by clear and constructive feedback. “As the SASMT-committee consists of music educators committed to the idea of music education as a holistic and ever- evolving process, the competition will steer away from distinguishing between ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ in determining medallists,” said Nicky Bosman from SASMT Port Elizabeth. “The emphasis will, instead, lie on award-

ing particularly commendable performance aspects. Medals will therefore, for instance, be given for ‘The Most Enjoyable Performance’ or ‘The Best Stage Presence’.” The Committee therefore encourages all music teachers from Mandela Bay Metro, Cacadu District and even the Sundays River areas, to enter their budding musicians. Admission to the competition is free and refreshments will be sold at the event. The competition is made possible through the generous sponsorship from Grootendorst Bakery and Petronella Catering and Fine Dining. It will be hosted at the Laerskool Frans Conradie school hall in Despatch on June 4th. The deadline for entries is May 4th. The professional women’s field is the strongest that the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship has ever seen, with defending champion, Jodie Swallow in the forefront. Annah Watkinson are all going to make this race into one that cannot be missed. A brand new bike course will be implemented this year which will take athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90.1km, on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the entire IRONMAN circuit. With the first change to the run course in its eleven year history, the new run course will bring athletes closer to their fans and supporters, thanks to four loops along Marine Drive. Inteendeel ek het nie geweet daar is sekere oefeninge wat kinders op sekere ouderdomme behoort te kan doen nie.” Ritmiese gimnastiek is ’n kompeterende sportsoort waarin Didloff verskeie medaljes op nasionale vlak gewen het, maar deesdae gaan dit vir haar oor veel meer as die wenmotief. Sy is passievol om kinders opgewonde te kry om aktief te wees en eerder tou te spring as om vasgenael te sit voor die televisie. Didloff bied ritmiese gimnastiek-klasse aan vir mense tussen die ouderdomme van 2 tot 20 jaar. Sy het klasse op Despatch, Summerstrand en Sunridgepark. Dié skou op Saterdag, 9 April by Humepark, Humerail, word met die goedkeuring en onder die vaandels van die SA Nasionale Posduif en Sierduif Organisasies aangebied. “By wedvlug-duiweboere is die strewe om duiwe met die mees perfekte balans, bouvorm en fisiese eienskappe te teel wat nodig is om ons gevleuelde ridders van die ruimte in staat te stel om lang afstande teen hoë snelhede af te lê. “Alhoewel daar inherente eienskappe soos stamina, spoed en rigtingsin is wat nie met die blote oog waargeneem kan word nie, is daar tog vele fisiese eienskappe waar uiterlike skoonheid en vliegvermoeëns hand aan hand gaan. “Vir die sierduif-manne gaan dit nie oor vliegvermoë nie, maar oor die rare eienskap-

pe van die magdom verskillende eksotiese tipes sierduiwe. En ook hoe om die eienskappe wat eie is aan elke sierduifsoort, volgens elke soort se standaard te teel en suiwer te bewaar,” sê Strydom. Die publiek is welkom om die skou by te woon en die wye verskeidenheid van kleure en tipes duiwe van nader te besigtig. “’n Mens staan verbysterd oor die verskillende soorte en tipes sierduiwe en wat die sierduif-manne as skou spesialiste kan vermag,” sê Strydom. Hy meen die een aspek wat alle duiweboere in gemeen het, is die liefde vir hul duiwe en die strewe na perfeksie om in sy eie agterplaas ‘n kampioen te teel. “Om na ‘n harde werksdag terug te keer na die natuur, af te skakel van die dag se probleme, jou duiwe te voer en te versorg is waarom elke duiweboer jou sal vertel, ‘in my duiwehok het ek rus en vrede vir my siel’”. Despatch-rugbyklub daag OP Rugbyunie voor hof MICHAEL GREEN Die Oostelike Provinsie Rugbyunie (OPRU), wat steeds steier weens ’n geldkrisis, sal dalk gou moet verduidelik waarom die Polisierugbyklub en nie Despatch nie, die unie in die Gold Cup-toernooi gaan verteenwoordig. Die Despatch-rugbyklub se prokureur, Andre Vlok, het bevestig dat hy ’n hooggeregshofaansoek teen die OPRU en Polisierugbyklub saamgestel het en dat die balju dit binnekort aan hulle sal oorhandig. Despatch voer aan dat hulle boaan die pun-

telys van die OPRU se Groot Uitdaagbekerreeks geëindig het en dus die unie in die Gold Cup-reeks moet verteenwoordig. Al die unies se sterkste spanne, uitsluitend universiteitspanne, neem aan die reeks deel. Die OPRU het egter besluit om die Polisierugbyklub vir die reeks te stuur. Daar was verlede jaar reeds onmin tussen Despatch en Polisie oor wedstryde wat deur die OPRU weens reën afgestel is wat glo ’n uitwerking op die puntelys gehad het. Volgens Vlok het Despatch met rolspelers van die OPRU en Polisie oor die kwessie vergader.

Daar kon egter nie ’n ooreenkoms bereik word nie en dis waarom die saak nou in die hof verder gevoer gaan word. Die OPRU is intussen steeds besig om ’n plan saam te stel waarmee hy die unie se geldkrisis wil ontlont. Die unie word deur likwidasie in die gesig gestaar as hy nie die hooggeregshof kan oortuig dat hy op die regte pad is om sy skuld aan ’n groep rugbyspelers te vereffen nie. Daar is boonop steeds ’n groep ontevrede klubs wat ’n mosie van wantroue in die OPRU-bestuur wil instel. Dié klubs het dit vroeër onsuksesvol probeer, maar het weer briewe

by die unie ingedien waarin hulle hul ontevredenheid uiteensit. Daar word verneem dat die OPRU binne die volgende paar dae op die briewe sal moet reageer. Die ontevrede klubs wil hê ’n spesiale vergadering moet gehou word waar vir of teen die huidige bestuur gestem moet word. Asof dit nie genoeg is nie, is die OP-Kings se voorbereiding vir die Curriebeker-reeks, wat volgende week begin, ver agter teen ander unies. Spanne soos Grens en die SWD-Arende het reeds verskeie vriendskaplike wedstryde gespeel terwyl die OP-Kings nou eers begin oefen.
