Local athlete made history in Germany L

usapho April made history by becoming the first-ever male runner to win the German HAJ Hannover Marathon three times. April (33), who was born and bred in Uitenhage, won the race in 2011 and 2013, and secured victory in 2:11:27 on Sunday, after breaking clear of a small lead group in the closing stages. This long distance runner is now amongst a long list of South African men who have already achieved the qualifying standard of 2:19:00 for the 42km race at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August, but await the decision of ASA on who makes the final team. Amongst other leading contenders are Stephen Mokoka (2:07:40), who has the option to race on the track aft-

er qualifying in the 5 000m and 10 000m events, Sibusiso Nzima (2:11:43), Lungile Gongqa (2:11:59) and Michael Mazibuko (2:12:29). The 2016 event featured a record entry of more than 21 000 runners. “Congratulations to Lusapho April. We encourage him to remain focused in building up towards this athletics season. Rotary donates junglegym to preschool U

nathi Pre-school which is situated in the Gunguluza area of KwaNobuhle plays a major role in the wellbeing of small children in the area. The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, which has had a long-standing association with the pre-school, decided to assist in making the school more enjoyable for the children by donating a jungle-gym. Marilyn Klassen, current President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South and CEO at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, was pleased that the club had managed to improve the circumstances at the school. “Children learn by using their senses and therefore children learn an enormous amount during play. The jungle gym will allow them to have fun and learn at the same time,” said Klassen. The Principal of Unathi, Cynthia Douw, in thanking all involved with the donation of the jungle-gym said, “We deeply appreciate what you are doing for our children and the com-

munity at large. “You have done us proud and put back those smiles on our kids. This has put our centre on a higher level. Thank you and may God bless you and shower you with more blessings.” The jungle gym was officially opened much to the delight of the pre-schoolers. The children immediately put it to good use, climbing, jumping and sliding all over the gym. The Club made the event even more enjoyable by providing some fun packages containing eats and drinks for the children. The Club received the jungle-gym from Irene Asherton of Beachview, which was brokered by Mark Krebser of Windsor Forest Products in Circular Drive, who generously erected it. Unathi currently takes care of 57 young learners, mainly between the ages of 2 and 5 years and has two staff members together with Principal Cynthia Douw. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Exciting Lego League returns Learners in Nelson Mandela Bay will again be exposed to the excitement and benefits of science and technology when Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s School of ICT hosts a regional qualifying tournament for the First Lego League (FLL) challenge. This year’s “Animal Allies” challenge theme for learners aged nine to 16 starts off with an information session at the University on Saturday, April 16th, followed by training workshops before the tournament starts in August. Children in teams of between two and 10 members learn valuable skills while researching challenges facing today’s scientists since FLL encourages participants to think like scientists and engineers. South Africa’s economic growth is presently being stifled by a severe skills shortage, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, maths and accounting. The introduction of the FLL challenge to South Africa, run by NMMU’s School of ICT, is one of several interventions to introduce children to the benefits of science and technology and interest them in pursuing careers in these fields. The FLL teams, alongside adult coaches, strive to solve problems using re-

search, engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots. This year the focus is on various interactions between humans and animals such as how dogs assist blind people. According to NMMU School of ICT (Lego Robotics) public relations intern Siphe Mwellie, past FLL challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the handicapped, and transportation. “By designing our challenges around such topics, learners are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) principles,” she said. After the April 16 information session, interested parties can attend additional workshops for pre-tournament training. The FFL’s official launch workshop takes place on August 20, after which the challenge documents are released. The regional qualifying tournament takes place on October 21 and 22 at NMMU’s Indoor Sports Centre.

Entries awaited for Knock on Wood arts festival Woodridge will, yet again, be opening its doors to young artists from schools and other artistic institutions in the region for the Knock on Wood Arts Fest! Adjudication of instrumental, vocal, choral and dramatic performances will be alternated with concerts covering a wide range of musical styles, poetry readings and exhibitions of participants’ art works.

Festival participants will, additionally, have the opportunity to compete in a brand new Vocal Duet section and Instrumental Ensemble Category. The Drama and Creative Writing Categories have, furthermore, been extended to accommodate Afrikaans and Xhosa entries. Adjudicators include Llise Dodd (Visual Arts), Thys Cillé (Visual Arts), Marlené Piet-

The Uitenhage Bowling Club raised funds through its project which ran during 2015. “Reach for Recovery would like to thank the Uitenhage Bowling Club for the fantastic and wonderful way of encouraging the community and their players to donate money towards breast cancer as well as overall cancer,” said Estelle Botha, Chairlady of Reach for Recovery. “I was overwhelmed by their effort and kindness of thinking of ladies who battle with disease.” She also said that silicon prosthesis is so expensive these days and she assured the members of the bowing club that the funds will be used for this purpose only.

Karoo food fest, cycling & 4x4 action The Swaershoek Pass, linking Cradock with Somerset East and Pearston over the Bankberg mountains, has long been a favourite of local mountain bikers. These same mountain bikers had the desire to race this monster of a mountain pass and the inaugural Swaershoek MTB Challenge was held last year. On Sunday, May 1st mountain bikers will be heading to Cradock, where the main race route starts, heading up and over the magnificent and scenic Swaershoek Pass – a dirt road that demands stamina and strength. The ascent is 1 045 metres over the first 21km, and the sometimes bumpy road has some sharp hairpin bends and switchbacks. In parts, the ascent is 1:9, but it averages 1:12. Thereafter the route drops down to needle through Karoo veld and irrigation lands, then back over the pass to end in Cradock.
