Volgens Petro de Klerk, ’n verkoopsagent van Pam Golding Properties, het hulle verle-

R1 000 aan enige persoon wat die diewe kan vastrek. Die polisie raai die agentskappe aan om ’n strafregtelike saak aanhangig te maak. Volgens lt. Fun at SA’s largest slip and slide All eyes will be on Bushpig Adventures this weekend as The Edge Muck Run takes place on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Wildsfees delighted with new partnership A new partnership will see one of South Africa’s top six festivals continue to grow and contribute to community upliftment in the Sundays River, according to SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees board chairman Paul Marais. “We are delighted and honoured that the SPAR group has decided to ‘go wild’ with us for at least the next three years as the naming sponsor,” he says. The 15-year-old festival is one of the only ones in the country to be owned by the community through a not-for-profit company. “Giving back to the local community is one of the key objectives of the SPAR Group. Partnering with a festival of this professional calibre that aims at enriching the immediate community, seemed a natural fit,” says Abri Swart, Marketing Director of SPAR Eastern

Cape. “The SPAR concept was established more than 80 years ago on the basis that working in partnership is to the benefit of customers, retailers, wholesalers and the food industry. Hackathon to reinvent the SMS Eastern Cape programmers are being challenged to take SMS communication to a new level at the next Propella Futuremakers Hub hackathon. Hosted in the Propella Futuremakers ICT hub on April 22, the hackathon is challenging programmers to think outside the box to create a marketable bulk SMS service. “The intellectual property will remain with the programmer or team which develops the apps, and they are encouraged to make them available to the market,” says Ellen Fischat, business support manager at the Propella Futuremakers Hub. “What the market is looking for is bulk SMS apps which allow them to, for example, communicate more effectively with their customers or to keep their sales teams in the field updated on the latest offers and pricing,” she says. The challenge for the programmers is to ensure that the app

cannot be hijacked or used by spammers and that it complies with privacy regulations. Programmers will be encouraged to think about their potential buyers when designing their specific system instead of the generic system that is already available. If the buyer is going to be a school or university so they can send bulk messages to their attendees then programmers can design it around what they would need. The hack will be fuelled with bottomless cups of coffee, pizza and chips – with participants being connected to one of the fastest digital lines in the Eastern Cape. PE named Bottlenose (dolphin) Capital of World K

nown as the Water Sports Capital of South Africa among others, Nelson Mandela Bay added another title to its identity the Bottlenose Capital of the World. Research conducted in the 90s by the Centre for Dolphin Studies in South Africa showed that approximately 20 000 Bottlenose Dolphins were in Algoa Bay in Nelson Mandela Bay. Today that number is estimated at 30 000 dolphins, which surpasses other areas around the world. “Establishing the city as the Bottlenose Capital of the World can branch out into a number of tourism and economic opportunities in line with the aims of the blue economy,” said Mandlakazi Skefile, Chief Executive Officer of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. “This title, in addition to our region being placed at world class standards with three blue flag status beaches, being nominated as

one of the top ports in the country for the World Travel Awards, and of course being known as the water sports capital of South Africa places us miles ahead of our competitors in terms of the attractiveness of our destination and will go towards getting more visitors on to our shores,” added Skefile. The launch of this initiative also brings into focus the need to educate the community about the unique ecology of the local coastline, getting them to participate in spreading the word about its importance and contributing to growing a sustainable economy. Skefile said that plans are already underway to launch a Dolphin Festival, possibly during Marine Month in October. She added it will be a celebration of these friendly creatures with the permanent smiles on their faces. “We are privileged to be in a position to

“Within this year, this system will be installed. All made possible with the generous donation of R60 000 from the John Walton Alumni Association,” said Phillip Joseph, John Walton Deputy Principal and Treasurer of the Alumni. Annually these former learners have fund-raising activities in order to raise funds for bursaries for deserving “Mama” students who are pursuing careers at universities or colleges. They also support the school with capital projects like the intercom system. On Friday, April 29th, the

school and Alumni will have joint functions to celebrate another year of historic achievements. “It will be the opening of the newly acquired National Lottery sponsored gymnasium and also the opening of the school’s second CAT computer room. This will be over and above the first computer room, which with the assistance of the Alumni, was sponsored and opened by Stenden University,” said Joseph. A “Hoenderbraai” will also be held on Friday, 29th with chicken meals selling at R40. At 18:00 the Alumni will have their Annual General Meeting at the school hall. )On Saturday, April 30th the Alumni will host their annual gala evening at the Uitenhage Indoor Centre. Helpende Hand se 150 takke met meer as 300 van Solidariteit Helpende Hand se personeel, vrywilligers en ondersteuners gaan op straathoeke en by verkeersligte staan en bedel met onkonvensionele gesegdes op kartonborde. #geeReg projek Dit is alles deel om bewusmaking te skep vir die #geeReg projek. Borde bevat kontroversiële boodskappe soos “jou geld voer my dwelmverslawing” en “gee my geld om dwelms te koop asseblief”. Hierdie taktiek is daarop gemik om die publiek daarop te wys dat daar onnadenkend en om verkeerde redes aan Bedelaars gegee word. In ’n kwalitatiewe studie wat deur Helpende Hand onderneem is het respondente beweer dat tot 90% van blanke bedelaars aan dwelms verslaaf is. Die organisasie glo dat skenkings eerder aan betroubare instansies gemaak moet word wat hulle daarop toespits om armes by te staan op ’n konstruktiewe manier. “Wanneer die publiek aan bedelaars op straat geld gee, verkeer mense onder die wanindruk dat die geld vir lewensmiddele soos voedsel en kleding aangewend gaan word. Min mense besef egter die skade wat hulle aanrig deur geld vir bedelaars te gee,” sê Lizelle Joubert, projekorganiseerder by Helpende Hand. Dr. Danie Brink, uitvoerende hoof by Solidariteit Helpende Hand sê, “Wanneer ons iets vir iemand gee of doen wat hulle in staat is om vir hulself te doen, is ons besig met

Helicopter ride and tea party for girl (6) CHANICE KOOPMAN A dream to have a fairy tea party and fly in a helicopter, finally came true for 6-year-old Anika Jordaan from Uitenhage last week. Anika, who was diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness in February this year, was given her dream flight and fairy garden from Reach for a Dream, an organisation that brings hope to sick children through lifetime experiences, despite the battles and hurdles they face on a daily basis. On arrival at Top Deck in Kragga Kamma, Anika and five of her friends were welcomed by two fairies from Majestic Princesses, enchanted by a fairy garden, and pampered like the princesses they are. “It was fun,” said Anika, who could barely contain her excitement. “I loved spending time with my friends, as I haven’t seen them for a long while now and I really enjoyed the helicopter ride too.” Her mother, Alfreda Jordaan, described the experience as a day Anika will never forget. “She was very excited when she woke up this morning and as a parent, it just brings joy to my heart to see her so happy. Jordaan said her daughter was completely healthy and the illness came as a shock to her and Anika’s father Archie. “When we were told about the illness, the feeling was indescribable. She’s been hospitalised since February so we’re grateful for the fact that Anika now knows that dreams can come true.” At Aptrac Aviation, a helicopter flight school in Port Elizabeth, Anika’s parents and friends had assembled to see the little girl step into the helicopter. With the pilot Tyla O’Brien, Anika went for a helicopter ride around the Bay, and finally saw the city of Port Elizabeth from a bird’s eye view.

Chinese man vermis CARALEE DORFLING

’n Chinese burger wat die afgelope twee maande kontrakwerk in Uitenhage gedoen het, word al die afgelope nege dae lank vermis. Guoyong Fan (42), wat sowat sewe weke gelede Suid-Afrika binnegekom het om in Uitenhage te werk, is laas deur sy kollegas op 10 April in dié dorp gesien. “Ons Chinese werkers eet gewoonlik saam middagete. Maar toe sy kollegas hom daardie Sondag vir ete soek, was hy nêrens nie, en is hy nog nie weer gesien nie,” het Fan se werkgewer, wat verkies om anoniem te bly, gister gesê. Volgens die werkgewer neem die maatskappy die afgelope vyf jaar werkers van China in diens, en is Fan se verdwyning die eerste ongelukkige voorval. “Wanneer die werkers se kontrak verstryk, of die werker teruggaan huis toe, word ons deeglik vooraf daarvan in kennis gestel. Dit is buite die norm vir ons werkers om sonder waarskuwing te verdwyn. Daarom twyfel ons dat hy terug huis toe is.” Fan se kollegas het ook gesê Fan was baie gelukkig in sy werk en het geensins planne genoem om sy werk te verlaat nie. “Sover as wat my kennis strek, het hy (Fan) ook geen familielede hier of in die land nie, en is ons baie bekommerd oor waar hy homself sou vind.”

Albertyn one of top recycling schools HEILIE COMBRINCK The Waste Trade Company announced its winners of the 2016 school project, and Laerskool Albertyn was among the top three schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. Albertyn learners collected a total of 2 914 kg of items for recycling. This earned the school R1 000 in cash, donated by Mpact Recycling SA. “The education of our youth lies at the heart of preserving the planet and creating environmental awareness, therefore we aim to empower kids with the knowledge and principles of recycling,” said Emmy Nxayeka, The Waste Trade Company’s Schools Project Co-ordinator. The Schools Project was initiated in 2009 as part of The Waste Trade Company’s social responsibility campaign and has since signed up 180 schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. Understanding the nature of children, the project was built on the following principle: “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may not remember, involve me and I’ll understand.” The Schools Project visits schools to teach the children about recycling and waste separation not only by show and tell, but by involving them in the process. Children are encouraged to bring recyclable materials from home, which they get to distribute in the waste separation area

after attending the theoretical info session. Participating schools benefit from the free collection of recyclable materials and the rebate received from The Waste Trade Company for the recyclables. The funds are usually put towards buying sporting equipment, upgrades or even creating soup kitchens in the underprivileged communities. “This initiative has been a huge success and we are also facilitating educational field trips to our depot. The children can now have a firsthand experience of the magnitude of waste processed per day and see how it is being separated,” said Nxayeka

Businesses and industries in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro now have the opportunity to donate their waste to schools. Through companies’ involvement with this worthwhile project, they will become part of an enthusiastic group working towards a cleaner environment and the conservation of our natural resources, saving energy for the generations to come and assisting school in raising much-needed funds. The Waste Trade Company 2016 school project winners were Kabega Primary (11481 kg) with BJ Mnyanda Primary as runners-up (6443 kg).

Met dié poging wil Oosthuizen soveel as moontlik geld insamel sodat looprame en rolstoele vir fisiek gestremdes gekoop kan word. Hy beoog om van die Baai regdeur Kaap toe, deur die Karoo en om die Oos-Kaap te ry om die hele afstand van 4 400 km te voltooi. Sy dryfkrag, verduidelik hy, is om groter bewusmaking oor die spesiale behoeftes van

fisiek gestremdes te skep, asook noodverligting te bring vir diegene wat met gestremdhede moet saamlewe. Oosthuizen het gesê dat hulle in Oktober ’n persoon in ’n rolstoel al die pad van Jeffreysbaai tot in die Baai gaan stoot om bewustheid te skep van gestremde mense. Increase in demand for rental homes T

here is currently high demand for rental homes in the Eastern Cape towns of Uitenhage and Despatch and this makes them hotspots for property investors. “Unfortunately, however, it also makes them a magnet for an increasing number of unlicensed managing agents who are definitely not acting in the interests of local landlords,” says Charlotte Vermaak, director of the Chas Everitt International franchise in Nelson Mandela Bay. “There are also many private landlords in these areas who are not aware of the legalities that need to be observed when renting out property, and it is primarily to assist them that we have decided to extend our rental property management division into the Uitenhage and Despatch node.”

Travelling the approximately 500km from Uitenhage to Gariep, will be worth the boring tar road cruising, as the 2016 Saamtrek will be loaded with Syncro adventure and camaraderie. The provisional itinerary for the Saamtrek includes a dam wall tour, easy going 4x4 trail, nature reserve trail, boat cruise on dam, tiger farm tour, an obstacle course and various other outdoor activities. These are not included in the Saamtrek package. “This is a fun event. The idea is to get 100 Syncros together and to meet all the people you chat to on the Syncro Forum. We don’t care what Syncros look like. Dented, bashed, rusted, well used, pristine, caravelle, camper, doka, just get it there. The more the merrier,” said Stuart Stirling on the Syncro SA Forum newsletter. One of the highlights will be the Syncro

Johan Opperman weet waarvan hy praat – hy is immers die voorsitter van die klub. Alle bestuurders kan aan hierdie pret kom deelneem en die klub nooi diegene wat hul vastrapvoertuie tot die uiterste wil toets om van 29 April tot 1 Mei ’n ope dag op die plaas De Doorns, 12 km buite Cradock, by te woon. Die 4x4-roetes maak voorsiening vir die sagtebaarde, hardebaarde en selfs doringdrade. Van die lekker uitstappies wat die C4xC4 die afgelope maande aangebied het, was een vir 36 besoekers van Graaff-Reinet, Oos-London, Port Elizabeth en Grahamstad wat op nasionale braaidag hul vaardighede teen die styl hange van die Swaershoekberge getoets het. Die kroon van die klub se jaar is gespan met ’n naweek saam met die lede van die Amatola Off-Road Club toe hulle Bobbejaanpas in Lesotho aangedurf het. Die eerste gedeelte was redelik begaanbaar in bobbejaanterme, maar die volgende dag het dit rof geraak. Om 24 km op Bobbejaanpas te ry het die

HEILIE COMBRINCK The changing of season usually also means the changing of sports and autumn in Uitenhage means mini hockey coaching time! Well-known in hockey circles, Peter and Brenda Biljon this year will start with their mini hockey coaching on April 30th at the Uitenhage Hockey Club, across from the Indoor Sports Centre. The coaching will continue every Saturday morning until June 25th. “As a result of the great demand for mini hockey coaching, we unfortunately can only accommodate 120 children between the ages of 6 and 13 years,” said Peter Biljon. The coaching is open to boys as well as girls and will be great sporting fun. Mini hockey balls as well as coaches will be provided for each squad. All that is required is a R120 registration fee and that the children wear proper running shoes and they must have their own hockey sticks. Registration for the mini hockey coaching will be on Saturday, April 23rd between 10:00 and 12:00. Late registration will also be done on April 30th from 08:30. Mandela Bay baseball on the roll The Mandela Bay senior baseball side took on Gelvan A’s last Saturday and started like a house on fire bringing in four runs in the first frame. This was followed by a home run by Hein van Loggerenberg and a two bagger by Jonathan Bakker, which got the game off to a solid start. Charl Ungerer and Wiehann Rautenbach, the pitcher and catcher combination, worked well for the MBA side and was replaced by Barend Niemand in the third frame. Barend pitched and batted very well with 2 two baggers in the 4th and 6th frame. Van Loggerenberg batted 4-5, Hennie Stander 4-4 Trenton Papman 3-4, Gary Bailey 2-4 and this kept the score board ticking over. Hein van Loggenberg was deemed Man of the Match as he closed the game off with his solid pitching in the 7th frame. For Gelvan As strong resistance was put up by Faadil Liberty who batted 3-4, Rafiek Saffadien 2-4, Kurt Geswindt 2-2, and Keith Grobler 2-4. Leon van der Nest, chief umpire, said it was a brilliant batting and fielding display by the MBA guys. Die Tiere van Daniel Pienaar het verlede Saterdag op hulle tuisveld in Uitenhage rugbykragte teen Grey gemeet en as wenners van die veld gedraf. Grey het oortuigend die oorhand in die meeste wedstryde gehad. Tydens die 1ste span wedstryd was dit egter ‘n ander storie. Die Tiere was vanaf die eerste afskop baie gemotiveerd en doelgerig om die manne van die Baai met goeie verdediging en aanvallende spel te stuit. Die Tiere het eerste punte aangeteken, maar teen halftyd was die telling 15–10 in Grey se guns. Die tweede helfte was gekenmerk met harde aanval en verdediging van beide spanne. Nadat Daniel Pienaar vir ‘n lang tyd met 24–15 voor was, het Grey nog ‘n drie gedruk en het die telling tot 24–20 gevorder.
