Clinics show country’s failing health system

n a recent oversight visit by delegates to three Primary Health Care (PHC) clinics in the region, it was witnessed first-hand how the country falls desperately short of having an efficient, functioning, service-oriented and patient-centered preventive health care system. “South Africa’s disease profile shows that we become ill from, and die of, preventable diseases that are manageable in the PHCtier,” said Dr. Wilmot James, DA Shadow Minister of Health. “These diseases can be treated at a significantly lower cost than at second-tier hospitals. It is therefore at the PHC tier that the bulk of health services should be rendered. “I will accordingly be requesting a meeting with the Eastern Cape Health MEC, Ms Pumza Dyantyi, to discuss what interventions are being planned to mitigate these needless illnesses.” His visit with DA Eastern Cape MPL, Celeste Barker, to Korsten and Rose Street clinics in Port Elizabeth and Kabah clinic in Uitenhage painted a very different picture. “At all three clinics the staffing levels are half of what they ought to be. A serious consequence of this includes long queues and overworked nursing staff, most visible at Kabah clinic. “Waiting times exceed what should be the norm – often four hours or more. “Indeed, at Kabah, the nursing staff faced crushing pressure from about 80 patients, some with babies and children in their arms, crammed into a small and densely packed hall that ran the risk of promoting clinic-acquired infections in an area that has a high incidence of multi-drug and extensively resistant TB.” Dr James argues that the Kabah infrastruc-

ture needs more consulting rooms, a proper driveway for ambulances and wheelchair friendly facilities and maintenance needs are considerable. Staff also require a safe exit when there are

riots, the last one of 18 May 2015 having left them trapped and vulnerable. The Department of Health conducted a national audit of clinics and released the results in 2012 and found a majority to be seriously

wanting. In response an Ideal Clinic programme was introduced to set things right. All clinics are in the process of being audited to see whether they meet the standards. (Heilie Combrinck)

Addo is fifth most visited national park A

ddo Elephant, Camdeboo, Karoo and Mountain Zebra National Parks, which make up the Frontier Region of South African National Parks (SANParks), contributed to increased statistics in guests to parks, camping and activities booked over the last financial year (April 2015 to March 2016). The biggest increase noted in the region was that of visiting guests – up by 11.9% from 305 251 over 2014/15 to 341 482 during 2015/16. Addo Elephant National Park, the largest na-

tional park in the area, welcomed 231 464 guests through its gates during this time, up from 204 881 previously. This made Addo the fifth most visited national park. Camping fever increases Camping also increased in popularity, with a regional growth of 11.2% in site nights sold – from 21 098 to 23 470. Karoo National Park just outside Beaufort West tallied a nearly 15% increase in site nights sold, from 5 661 to 6 503. Addo topped

the national list of parks with the highest camp site occupancy with 82.3%. Karoo National Park ranked fourth with 68.3%. Regionally, the number of activities sold went up by 7.3%, from 31 547 to 33 835. Addo’s various activities (guided game drives, horse trails, a 4x4 route, walking and hiking trails) accounted for the majority of these – 30 117 from 27 680 previously, an increase of nearly 9%. Nationally, Addo Main Camp topped the list of camps with the highest activities per

100 overnight guests – at 39.8, well ahead of second place with 21.9. Local visitors to parks were exactly double that of overseas guests – accounting for 66.5% of entries (227 255 over the 113 355 international visitors). Guests from the top five countries to the region were Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States and France. Overall, day visitors accounted for 75% of arrivals, with only 25% of guests to parks overnighting.

Bartosch is an experienced educator and recently spend some time at the Vera School for Learners with Autism in Rondebosch, Cape Town, to learn more about their curriculum and programmes for children with special needs. Toddlers Paradise Care Centre takes care of 120 children who range from babies to Grade R learners. The aim of the open day is specifically to promote the special class for children with special needs. Also in attendance at the open day, will be Jessica Knoetze from Sanlam. She will talk to parents regarding financial aspects and wills, specifically with the focus of taking care of children with special needs. It so often happens that these children outlive their parents. Toddlers Paradise’s services include: educational outings, balanced meals, sleepover facilities, open during school holidays and the TEACCH programme for children with disabilities. The open day on Saturday (April 30th) will be from 09:00 - 12:00 at 4 Bidwell Street. Autism is complicated. The abilities of people with autism range from severely impaired to extremely gifted. And no two persons, with this brain-based developmental disorder, are the same. In Uitenhage educator Ansie Bartosch, owner of Toddlers Paradise Care Centre, speaks with enthusiasm regarding her holistic developmental approach in taking care of toddlers with autism and special needs. “Autism is not curable. But through the understanding of each child’s special needs and giving individual attention, you can better the child’s standard of living,” said Bartosch. There is no need to be ashamed when your child is diagnosed with autism. Bill Gates has autism. So does Susan Boyle and did geniuses like Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton and Mozart. Bartosh explains by focussing on the strong points of a child with autism, you can develop an uniquely skilled person. Mozart for instance had repeated facial expressions, meowed like a cat, did somersaults and his hearing was very sensitive. He also was in need of constant motion of his hands and feet. This same man worked assiduously and arguably became the most gifted composer, conductor and musician in the history of classical music. This may be 250-odd years ago, but the same principle still applies: educational stimulation will better the life of a child with autism. “We at Toddlers Paradise embrace the inclusion and accommodation of children with

Local butchery is ‘worth its beef’

An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum, these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller-marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money. Multiple businessowner Leon Slabbert, who also owns of Cuyler Butchery, received the award in Isando, Johannesburg. The Cleaver Awards is proudly supported by Freddy Hirsch and the aim is to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards and it is seen by consumers as a seal of approval. The South African Red Meat Industry congratulated the winners, who were voted for by their loyal and satisfied customers. Award winners have come to realize the extent to which a Cleaver Award is recognition of quality in everything they do. “Some of the finalists have scored up to 99.8% on a 212 point checklist which is used

t the end of 2015, only 1 500 breeding pairs of African Penguins were left on Dyer Island. It is estimated that there are now about 18 000 African Penguins left in South African colonies. This is a 90% decline from the 1920 estimate of the population of one million. The Dyer Island Conservation Trust is celebrating ten years of dedicated effort in conserving the critical marine ecosystem of Dyer Island in Gansbaai. Volkswagen Group South Africa’s partnership with DICT started in 2011 with the sponsorship of two vehicles which were utilised to assist with activities such as beach rescues and general running of the organisation. Later on, Volkswagen became the primary supporter of the Lwazi (Xhosa for knowledge) Research Boat which is used by marine biologists to study the behaviours of the Great White Shark. “We believe our partnership and support of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust in the past five years has played a critical role in assisting the organisation to conserve, rehabilitate and research the marine ecosys-

tem of Dyer Island and surrounding waters,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director at Volkswagen Group SA. The 20ha Island, which is managed by CapeNature and the surrounding ocean, is home to the Marine Big 5 - African Penguins, Great White Sharks, seals, dolphins and whales - and seabirds. Volkswagen partnered with the DICT for the construction of the state-of-the-art African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary which conserves, rehabilitates and conducts research into the endangered African Penguins and other seabirds found on Dyer Island. Furthermore, Volkswagen covers the operational costs of the APSS. “Our partnership with DICT is part of our Think Blue initiative which focuses on environmental sustainability. “Through Think Blue, we endeavour to implement small changes which will make big differences in the future of our environment. “Our continuous support of the DICT is our small contribution to the ecological sustainability of our Marine Big 5, especially the endangered African Penguins. “We hope our support of DICT’s good work will continue to create public awareness and

will lead to more funding from the private sector which would be used to support the organisation,” added Schaefer. DICT was founded by Wilfred Chivell in 2006. Together with CapeNature, DICT started the African Penguin housing project to address the issue of the lack of breeding habitat for this species. Past extensive guano scraping removed the African penguins’ natural breeding habitat and left them exposed to predators and other elements. Chivell designed a unique penguin home, modelled on its natural burrows. His design was lauded nationally and internationally and and is now a developing project used extensively at other colonies. Chivell said, “DICT is very grateful to have a partner like Volkswagen who shares similar philosophy of the importance of conserving our environment for the future generations. The lack of funding is one of the many challenges that impede non-profit organisations. The support from Volkswagen with vehicles and fuel for Lwazi research boat has made an immense difference to the running of DICT. “We hope this partnership will continue for many more years to come as our work has just begun.”

Hackathon winner reinvents bulk SMS Eastern Cape programmers were challenged to take SMS communication to a new level and students showed that this is possible. Hosted in the Propella Futuremakers ICT hub the hackathon challenged programmers to create a marketable bulk SMS service. The market currently is in need of bulk SMS apps which will allow them to, for example, communicate more effectively with their customers or to keep their sales teams in the field updated on the latest offers and pricing. The challenge for the programmers is to ensure that the app cannot be hijacked or used by spammers and that it complies with privacy regulations. Dylan Warwick reinvented the SMS and was named the winner with Languteka

Machebe as the runner-up. “Warwick’s system was the most versatile, and met our business requirements,” says Mara Jacobs, receptionist and administrator at Propella Futuremakers Hub. The system developed by Warwick will be used by Propella Futuremakers Hub to communicate with their database. “With this new SMS system we are able to class our clients into different categories and send out different SMSs to each category,” she says. Bike wash in aid of Little Fighters Watch out, as on Saturday there will be a Bikini Bike Wash at Hot Spot in Graaff Reinet Road, Uitenhage, in aid of the Little Fighters For Cancer Trust. Marimba and steel pan band festival A one-of-its-kind Marimba and Steel Pan Band Festival will be hosted by Strelitzia’s Mastrimba Band in Uitenhage. The program will include a Round-Robbin “let’s get movin’” and a percussion session. For the bands able to stay later than 19:00 there will be a Jolly Jam & Joy session after supper. The Band from AMI (African Music Instruments ) and Gareth Walwyn from Grahamstown, will facilitate said sessions and also be

Search for young radio presenters The search is on again for grade 11 scholars to takeover the airwaves on Thursday, 16 June 2016. The project was started in 2014 and gives young people the opportunity to be trained in radio broadcasting, after school, for a period of up to a month leading up to Youth Day. “On Youth Day, our young presenters, producers and newsreaders take the spotlight, capably co-hosted by the likes of Daron Mann, Gordon Graham and Mio Khondleka”, says Algoa FM’s Operations Director, Alfie Jay. “We love imparting our industry knowledge on these young minds and influencing them positively. This is our investment in the future of good radio. It really is a once-in-a-

lifetime opportunity for these scholars to work with experienced and talented professionals in the industry. Amanda Lamprecht, toergids by Amala Tours, het ’n beroep op die Addo-olifantpark se ereveldwagters gedoen om besoekers baie meer attent te maak op die noodsaak om mis “mis” te ry ten einde vlerklose miskruiers, wat in groot getalle in die mis voorkom, se lewe te spaar. Die kritiek bedreigde vlerklose Addo-miskruier (Circellium bacchus) het in die 1900’s het dié miskruier nog feitlik oor die hele Suid-Afrika voorgekom, Nou is die Addo-olifantpark en omliggende dele die enigste plek waar ’n mens nog die vlerklose miskruier kan sien. Hou maar stil by enige hoop olifantmis in die pad en haal die kamera met lang lens of verkyker uit – jy sal die outjies hard aan die woel kry. Maar nou is dit ongelukkig so dat talle besoekers déúr die mis ry. Ja, daar is padborde wat sê die miskruier het “ryvoorrang”, en ander borde wat die miskruier duidelik wys, maar nêrens staan pertinent geskrywe “Moe-

Die Addo-miskruier is ’n spesie wat nie kan vlieg nie en waarvan die voortbestaan buite die park bedreig word omdat olifante daar nie meer vrylik rondloop nie. Dit kom net in die Oos-Kaap voor – van die Kaboegarivier oos van Kirkwood deur die Suurberge en die Addo-olifant Nasionale Park en tot by die Sondagsriviermond. Zuurberg Trek bike race adds luxury package Organisers of the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek boutique mountain bike race have announced a further entry option in response to popular demand. The three-day event, which is based at the Zuurberg Mountain Village initially offered a no-frills Silver and the luxury Platinum and Gold packages. According to race organiser Rob Hayter both luxury options were fully subscribed, which led them to come up with an innovative alternative package that offered prospective participants similar perks. Apart from the entry fee, he said the new

Silver Plus option would include three nights’ accommodation in self-catering chalets at the Addo Elephant National Park. “The park is only 16km from the race village and there is a Cattle Barron restaurant on the premises,” said Hayter. “A bike wash service, lunch at the race village and bike transfers from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban airports are also included.” “Apart from visitors from elsewhere in the country, we wanted to make this affordable for Eastern Cape riders. We had to come up with some way to help the local market.”

In creating a viable solution, Hayter said they had worked closely with long-time partners SANParks. “Their informal motto is to bring people to the park and the park to the people, so this is a win-win scenario.” He said the 194km race took riders through parts of Addo that were often kept hidden from the public. Foreign tenants must be ‘legal’ M

uch has been said about the planned restrictions on foreign property ownership in South Africa, but not many landlords know that there are already certain limits on letting properties to nonSouth Africans. It is important to know this, says Chas Everitt Property Rentals CEO Greg Harris, as the interest in renting SA properties continues to grow, not only among European “swallows” seeking a respite from the northern winters, but also among “captains of industry” hailing from all over the world. “Many global companies now see SA as the most attractive gateway to Africa and are sending executives and professionals here for

a few years at a time to set up and run local operations as their continental headquarters. On the other hand, many top business people from Africa also want to have a base here so that they can interact easily with their international counterparts. “And on top of that, SA is one of the top 10 diplomatic centres in the world in terms of the number of embassies, high commissions and consulates, which adds to the non-South African demand for rental properties.” However, exciting as this is, he says, landlords in SA need to be sure that they are not contravening the Immigration Act when letting their property to someone who is not a South African citizen.

This legislation defines a “legal foreigner” as a person in possession of either a valid visa that entitles them to study, work or do business in SA for a certain period, or a permanent residence permit approved by the Department of Home Affairs. Even more to the point, though, says Harris, the Act makes it a criminal offence to let a property to an “illegal foreigner” – meaning any non-South African who is not in possession of the correct documentation. “Such a transaction is regarded, in terms of the Act, as the equivalent of aiding and abetting an illegal immigrant, and is thus a serious offence punishable on conviction by a fine or a jail term of up to 18 months.

Alhoewel al die duiwe nog nie klaar verveer het nie was die wedywering straf en het die bekwame beoordelaars hulle hande vol gehad om die duiwe te beoordeel. Daar was 32 klasse, wat gewissel het van broei-, wen- vlieg-, en jaaroud-duiwe. “Die duiwe word beoordeel volgens uiterlike voorkoms, balans en spiere, beenstruktuur, vlerk en veerkwaliteit. Punte word dan daarvolgens uit ’n totaal van 100 toegeken,” sê Hennie le Roux. Gert Nell & Vennote van Uitenhage is aangewys as die skoukampioen. Sy duiwe behaal onder andere 3 eerste plekke, 7 tweede en 6 derde plekke. Ander duiweboere van Uitenhage en Despatch wat ook goed gevaar het sluit in Tien Jordaan. Een van sy wyfie duiwe word as die kampioen wyfie op die skou aangewys en sy word ook as die reserwe kampioen aangewys. Hy behaal ook 2 eerste en 3 tweede plekke met sy duiwe. Boertjie Nell van Despatch behaal ’n 1 eerste plek, 3 tweede en 2 derde plekke. Nell & Vennote, Jordaan en Nell is

almal ook die kampioenvlieërs van hulle onderskeie klubs. Ander duiweboere wat pryse gewen het

sluit in Loodt Schmidt, Twakkies du Toit en Marcelle Els van Despatch Posduifklub. Hulle het elkeen 5 duiwe ingeskry en Loodt het ’n eerste, 3de en 6de plek gewen, Twakkies wen ’n eerste plek, en Marcelle Els kry ‘n 2de en 6de plek. Shane Gerber van Port Elizabeth se broei mannetjie word as die groot kampioenduif van die skou aangewys. Die finale punte van die top drie posisies is, eerste Gert Nell & Vennote (96), Chris Jacobs van Oos Londen (90) en Shane Gerber (55) punte. “Die organiseerders verdien ‘n pluimpie vir die reelings. Om ‘n skou te reel is nie

kinderspeletjies nie. Gedagtig aan die harde werk en die koste daaraan verbonde, is dit teleurstellend dat al die duiweboere nie van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak het om die skou te ondersteun nie,” het Le Roux gesê.
