t is just two more weeks to go until the second annual 5km Volkswagen Fun Run offers participants the chance to run through the Volkswagen factory. Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) PeoplePavilion will host its second fun run on Saturday, 21 May. Last year’s inaugural race attracted nearly 1 000 runners including the 2016 Hannover Marathon winner and Rio Olympics medal hopeful, Lusapho April who

resides in Uitenhage. The 2016 Volkswagen Fun Run is once again open to the public, VWSA employees and their loved ones. The race will start from the PeoplePavilion before making its way through the Volkswagen Factory and will finish back at the PeoplePavilion. “The second annual 5km fun run is one of the many sporting events that will be hosted by the PeoplePavilion this year. Our R30 mil-

lion investment into this facility is certainly paying off and is giving our employees worldclass biokinetics care, affordable gym as well as a place to meet and socialise,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. The entry fee for the race is R20 per person and closing date for the entries is Wednesday, 18 May 2016. Registration forms are available at Brockett Sports in Uitenhage and Brian

Bands Sports in Port Elizabeth. The winners of the male and female categories will each receive R1 000 prize money. The second and third place winners will receive R500 and R250 respectively. “As we did in the first race, all the proceeds from this year’s race entries will be donated to the Lake Farm Centre which we have been supporting for the past ten years,” concluded Schaefer. Die evaluering van boerboele ouer as 12 maande geskied volgens 72 punte. Maar volgens Erasmus is daar drie hoofpunte waarop ’n boerboel al met die eerste oogopslag beoordeel word. “As jy ’n boerboel op sowat 200 treë sien aankom en sy of haar kop is nie groot genoeg dat jy op daardie afstand kan sien dis ’n boer-

Women’s race in support of terminally ill kids Every entrant running in Saturday’s SPAR Women’s Challenge will bring a dream to provide around-the-clock care for terminally ill children one step closer to reality. One of the event’s two beneficiaries, Northwood Children’s Hospice (NCH) in Mount Croix, was founded in 2010 to provide support, care and information for their little patients and their families. “We see the care that we give as a ‘kiss in the pocket’ for children to carry as long as they need it,” said centre director and founder Maureen Lamb. It currently is a day centre, but are fundraising tirelessly to expand the operation into a full-time one, with a team of medical professionals on hand to offer both medical skills and palliative care. She said proceeds from the Women’s Challenge would contribute to the centre’s Brick Challenge, which drives fundraising for the building of three patient wings needed for the little patients who need to stay and rest onsite. “The gifts we receive from the work we do cannot be measured in human terms. How-

ever, the love and expressions of support we receive from the community always leaves us with warmth in our hearts.” The Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay is the second beneficiary. SPAR Eastern Cape marketing director Abri Swart said they were proud to be associated with worthy causes such as NCH and APD.

Leo Club elects new board of young leaders The Alpha Leo Club recently held its elections at the Hoërskool Brandwag clubhouse where they voted for the new board of directors to take this youth organisation forward. The Leo Club programme is part of Lions Clubs International and gives young people the opportunity to serve their communities and make a positive impact. They do this whilst having fun, making new friends and in the process also develop valuable leadership skills. In fact the word Leo stands for leadership, experience and opportunity. According to Aphiwe Zinto from Muir College, the out-going president of the Uitenhage based Alpha Leo Club, their objective is to provide the youth the opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community. They conduct various projects in the fields of health care, elders, children, differently abled, literacy and education, and self-development. Leos also involved in fund-raising projects and is the largest youth club of voluntary character in the world, present in 140 countries. According to Lions’ international policies, by the end of April the new board must be elected and they officially start working from the 1st of July. “So, we have chosen our new board, out

of the seven local schools associated with the Alpha Leo Club,” said Zinto. “I have high hopes for this new board and I know each and every one of them deserves the position it was elected to. I told them what I was taught: Be Phenomenal or Be Forgotten.” The following members were chosen to succeed the current board for the term 2016/2017: President: René Schonken (Hoërskool Brandwag), Vice President: Ambesa Daniels (Riebeek College), Secretary: Charnia Vlooh (Strelitzia), Treasurer: Karla Venter (Hoërskool Brandwag), Community Service Chair: Sibabalwe Mbini (Muir College), Fund-raising Chair: Dieter Marais (Daniel Pienaar THS), Membership Chair: Angelique Tee (Riebeek College), Public Relations Officer: Aubrecia Zealand (Strelitzia). Pneumatix in Despatch for ministry work ANIKA DE BEER This past week, a group of students from the Performing Arts Academy - more commonly known as Pneumatix - in Cape Town visited Despatch with a spectacular goal in mind: winning over the hearts of young people for God. This group is one of three that consists of nineteen students who travel all around the country visiting schools and churches. They combine their different programs - some of them study music, others performing arts or

theology - into a concert of sorts that involves praise and worship and a drama performance. These performances count towards the practical side of their studies and are not something to be missed. During this week, they had productions scheduled at High School Despatch for Tuesday, Wednesday and today, with a different theme for every production. Prutpot van kunste op Despatch gehou Die droom van ‘n groot gees in plaaslike kultuurkringe en die destydse stigter van die Despatch Kunsfees, wyle Apie Rossouw, was om op eie bodem ‘n kulturele prutpot vir die kunste te skep. Dié droom van hom is bewaarheid. Despatch Kunsfees het oor die jare gegroei tot ‘n platform, waar jeug van regoor die Oos-Kaap, die uitvoerende en skeppende kunste kom vier en ter selfdertyd hul Godgegewe talente deel en ontwikkel. Dit is weer tyd vir dié tweejaarlikse Despatch Kunsfees, wat vanaf 9 tot 13 Mei op die dorp aangebied word. Deelnemers van so ver as Graaff-Reinet, Joubertina en Gamtoosvallei het reeds ingeskryf. Plaaslik is leerders van verskeie skole in die Nelson Mandela Metropool slaggereed om hul merk in die kunswêreld te maak. My kind het nié met die man boodskappe op WhatsApp uitgeruil voordat sy verdwyn het nie. Sy is ook nie seksueel aangerand nie. Die polisie het wel aan ons gesê dit lyk asof sy verwurg is.” Kayla, van die Moeggesukkel-nedersetting, het verlede week op Woensdag vermis geraak toe haar ma haar gevra het om vir haar bababoetie ’n doek by ’n nabygeleë winkel te gaan koop. Haar lyk is Sondagaand in ’n opslaanhuis aan die rand van Moeggesukkel gekry. “Die polisie het aan ons gesê die vermeende

By die laerskool in Rosedale, Uitenhage, waar Kayla ’n gr. 6-leerling was, het leerlinge Dinsdagoggend gehoor van haar dood. Larry de la Harpe, hoof van Dalrose Primêre Skool, het gesê hulle is diep bedroef oor Kayla se “onnodige” dood. “Ons is kwaad en gegrief. Sy was ’n onskuldige kind en haar hele lewe het voor haar gelê. Sy het dit nie verdien nie. Ons gaan seker maak dat die hele skool berading ontvang,” het De la Harpe gesê. Kayla se klasonderwyser, Vernon Miles, het haar as ’n stil en teruggetrokke kind bestempel. “Ek het nog [verlede] Dinsdag van haar ’n voorbeeld gemaak in die klas en gevra of die ander nie maar soos sy kan wees nie. Haar dood is ’n groot skok. Ek het nie woorde nie,” het ’n hartseer Miles gesê. )Die skool beplan om Vrydag (môre) om 08:00 ’n roudiens vir Kayla te hou.

Superrugby-wedstryde kan daar op die grootskerm-televisie gekyk word. Vure sal aangesteek word en braaipakke sal te koop wees.

Can you run a business from a sectional title home? T

he sluggish economy and declining employment over the past few years have prompted an increasing number of people to start their own businesses as a way of earning an income. “Most of these small or micro-business owners can’t afford to rent an office, shop or manufacturing space, so their enterprises are almost by definition home-based,” says Andrew Schaefer, MD of leading national property management company Trafalgar. However, he says, establishing a homebased business or full-time home office in a sectional title (ST) scheme can be problematic, and owners must be sure to do things the right way or they could find their fledgeling

enterprises grounded for good. “It is clear from the Sectional Titles Act that a flat or townhouse is intended for residential use, and generally cannot be used as an office or place of business – unless the owners of every other unit in the ST scheme agree in writing to a change of use. “On the other hand, times and lifestyles have changed so much since the Act was introduced that we as managing agents always encourage owners and trustees to consider change-of-use applications very carefully rather than just rejecting them out of hand. Running a home-based business may be the only way for a fellow-owner to earn a living and keep up his levy payments, for example,

so agreeing to him doing so may be in their own interests.” Schaefer says there are three main factors that the members of the body corporate can use to guide their decision to grant or withhold permission: ) Noise, and on that basis, an accounting or computing business is a whole different proposition from a vehicle repair or woodworking business. ) The possible inconvenience or “nuisance” the business may cause, particularly in regard to security and parking. ) Advertising and signage. Is there provision in the prescribed management rules for ST schemes that prevents owners or residents

from doing anything that might harm the ‘reputation’ of their scheme? “Owners generally don’t want their ST scheme to lose its residential character and end up looking like an office park or a minifactory complex. Signboards advertising the various businesses that it houses - would most likely have a negative effect on the value of all homes in the scheme. “Consequently, even if they do approve the change of use and establishment of a homebased business, they may want to veto the placement of any advertising material or signage for that business anywhere on the common property.” (Issued by: Trafalgar Property Group)

’n Belowende oopwaterswemmer van Uitenhage, Dieter Marais (15) oefen om sy droom, die Robbeneiland-vryheidswem, in Desember te bewaarheid. Die leerder van HTS Daniel Pienaar het in Desember die Kowie Riviermyl geswem en ‘n vierde posisie in sy ouderdomsgroep behaal. Daarna het hy die Spar Riviermyl (vir die vierde keer) geswem en ’n algehele 27ste plek behaal. Met sy deelname aan die Bell Bouy oopwaterswem was hy die jongste deelnemer en enigste swemmer van Uitenhage. Marais het hier vierde gekom in die ouderdomsgroep waarin hy geswem het. Marais het onlangs aan die Nasionale Oopwaterkampioenskappe in Grabouw deelgeneem. Sy tyd van 45 minute was gemaklik binne die kwalifiserende tyd, maar hy was teleurgesteld aangesien hy die afstand verlede jaar 2 minute vinniger voltooi het. Daniel Pienaar is nietemin trots op Marais, aangesien meeste van die deelnemers se tye stadiger was. Die dam se watervlak was aansienlik laer as in 2015 en motorbote het ook die water redelik onstuimig gelaat. (-Heilie Combrinck)

‘Eco Car’ invited to London marathon Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s fuel-efficient “Eco-Car” – which has been designed to travel nearly 300km on just one litre of fuel, was on display at the recently heldKnysna Motor Show. NMMU’s display, themed “advanced mobility”, showcased the Eco-Car – the fruits of a global student project linked with Shell’s EcoMarathon events – as well as the projects that fall under the national uYilo e-Mobility Technology Innovation Programme, which is hosted by NMMU. The Eco-Car project, driven by Mechanical, Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics students, last year saw the five-member team designing and manufacturing a fully carbon composite prototype vehicle, which participated in the African leg of the Shell Eco-Marathon, in Pretoria in October. “The objective of the Eco-Car project is to challenge students to manufacture an ultralightweight car to maximise fuel efficiency

and determine how far the vehicle can travel on a litre of fuel,” said NMMU Mechanical Engineering lecturer Clive Hands. A huge feather in the team’s cap, was an invitation to the flagship Shell Eco-Marathon event in London in June this year. However Hands said the team had not yet been able to raise the R600 000 it would need to get there. Should they participate, they will compete in the prototype class (geared for performance, rather than passenger comfort) where a conventional petrol engine has been modified to accept a programmable fuel injection unit to minimize fuel usage. “The Eco-Car is also fitted with specially designed Michelin tyres with a rolling resistance 10 times better than conventional tyres,” said Hands. The Shell Eco-Marathon is an established event worldwide with competitions in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa. .
