VWSA leads the way in sourcing black suppliers V
olkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) hosted its first ever Black-Owned Suppliers’ Day in Uitenhage last Thursday, where 45 black-owned manufacturing suppliers exhibited to over 400 delegates.
The event, which was attended by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, and MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism in the Eastern Cape, Sakhumzi Somyo, presented a platform for companies that meet VWSA’s stringent supplier criteria to profile themselves to the local automotive industry. “The concept of this pioneering suppliers’ day in our industry originates from Volkswagen’s determination to expand its business to black-owned suppliers. “This will ensure that we continue to support the economic transformation in South Africa,” stated Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of VWSA, in his opening address. “Volkswagen takes the issue of procurement from black-owned suppliers as a priority from both a moral and legislative compliance perspective. “We understand government’s priority elements of the BBBEE codes and the drive for ownership. We, however, have difficulty complying with the Enterprise and Supplier Development element set out in the recentlyrevised BBBEE mandate. “This is not because we do not want to, but because it is virtually impossible given the scarcity of black-owned suppliers to the local automotive industry. In our case, this is compounded by our high level of local content in the manufacture of Polo and Polo Vivo,” explained Schaefer. VWSA contacted over 100 organisations, ranging from industry associations, organised businesses, business support bodies and government agencies, to request assist-
ance in compiling a list of potential suppliers. The contact list included companies from other industries such as Defence/Military, Agriculture, Mining, and Information Technology. As a result of this initiative, Volkswagen now has the first ever database of potential black suppliers to the industry and government agencies associated with the automotive industry. A total of 430 companies applied to be part of the event. Applications were assessed against a set of criteria and finally only 45 companies were approved to be exhibitors. In his speech Minister Davies complimented and thanked VWSA for their vision, for showing their commitment to transformation through action, and for providing insight into the challenges that the automotive industry faces in securing relationships with black-owned suppliers. One of the highlights of the day’s programme was a ministerial roundtable that discussed how black industrialists and blackowned suppliers could be assisted to be part of the automotive sector. <Langalakhe “Langa” Masango from the Durban based company Innova Wheels shows some of his alloy wheel designs. Masango also designs sport cars, passengers cars and functional components. He said most of his innovative work stems from a gap in various markets globally.

The participants were: Minister Rob Davies; the CEO of the Black Business Council, Mohale Ralebitso; CEO of the Automotive Industry Development Centre, Dr David Masondo; and Philisiwe Mthethwa, the CEO of the National Empowerment Fund. Other high profile guests included the chief executives of Toyota, Ford and Mercedes in South Africa, who used the opportunity to visit the exhibition together with other players from the industry and familiarise themselves with the potential future suppliers exhibiting on the day. Yesteryear learners’ hype to upgrade school HEILIE COMBRINCK “Nobody, but nobody, expected the class of 1986 to have raised R41 000. This they donated with the greatest of pleasure and started the dancing and celebrations.”
This is according to Phillip Joseph, Deputy Principal at John Walton Secondary and also an alumni member of the school, regarding last weekend’s gala evening. A newly acquired National Lottery gym as well as an additional computer room were re-
cently opened at John Walton Secondary School. This is over and above the first computer room, which with the assistance of the Alumni, was sponsored and opened by Stenden University. An intercom communication system will also be installed at the school. Former learners played a major role in all of the above upgrading of facilities at the school. “Initially, the former learners of the school were to donate R60 000 towards the installation of the intercom system at their Alma Mater. “However, former learners of yesteryear (especially 1982, 1984, 1986 & 1989) did so well with income generation, that they doubled this amount and assisted the school with a huge amount of R120 000.” During the well attended gala evening at the Uitenhage Indoor Centre, the class of 1984 had eyebrows raised starting of by pledging R10 000 towards the school. This set the ball rolling with the class of 1982 opening their purses, beating this amount, resulting in more than just the raising of eyebrows. “The challenge and gauntlet have now been thrown down by the ex-learners to other learners and businesses in Uitenhage to further assist the school by donating gen-

Will the price of milk also spike? Milk prices might soon also hit consumers’ pockets as a result of the serious drought and insane increase in electricity tariffs which negatively affected dairy farmers. “Producer prices are currently at virtually the same level as almost two years ago, whilst input prices are much higher,” said Dr Chris van Dijk from the Milk Producers’ Organisation. “Milk processors should seriously consider the level of producer prices in order to enable the producer to sustain production. Otherwise the supply of raw milk will be under pressure from June onwards.”
The serious drought has led to the steep rise in grain prices and it is expected that the high cost of feed will continue until mid-2017. “We are of the opinion that it is unfair that the dairy farmer bears the brunt of cost pressures. Retail prices on dairy products on the shelf began to rise as early as March.” The Milk Producers’ Organisation is of the opinion that in cases where processors have already succeeded in negotiating higher prices with retailers, they should invest part of that increase in ensuring the sustainability of the dairy farmers’ production capacity. BE AWARE OF CATTLE ON ROADS Unattended cattle are still roaming the R75 at the back of Despatch. Two weeks ago the two year old Taylisa Kleinbooi was fatally injured when the vehicle she was travelling in was accidentally hit at a crash scene involving another vehicle and a cow. Drivers are urged to be on the lookout for the roaming cattle, especially during night time. This photo was taken a week after the accident, only a few metres from where the fatal accident occurred.

Chance to view SA Agulhas II
T
he Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) will host the annual SA Agulhas II Open Day this Saturday, 14 May, in Port Elizabeth. The open day will highlight the Department’s work in the ocean and coastal environment, and will also provide a guided tour of the vessel, from its state of the art laboratories, to the Miriam Makeba Lounge. Aboard the ship will be some members of the Marion 72 expedition team, as well as a host of researchers and scientists from DEA and tertiary institutions who have done research in the ocean and on the island for the past 14 months. Marion Island is a volcanic island that forms part of South African territory and was proclaimed as a Special Nature Reserve Status in 1995. This year, also marks 50 years of research and adventure on South Africa’s Sub-Antarctic Island. There will also be exhibitions and displays by DEA and its stakeholders in the maritime industry. The world’s largest bookshop, the MV Logos Hope, is on its way for her first ever visit to the port of Port Elizabeth. The vessel is operated by the German charity registered as GBA Ships e.V. – “Gute Bücher für Alle” (Good Books for All) and consists of 400 international volunteers from more than 55 countries. Most of these volunteer have devoted two years of their lives to serve this charitable endeavour, working onboard the MV Logos Hope without receiving any salary. Over the past 40 years, GBA Ships have visited many different countries around the world “Bringing Knowledge, Help and Hope” to the people of the world through giving access to good literature and charitable work. In 1973 this 132.5 metres ship was commissioned as a car ferry running between Sweden and Germany, a route she ran for 10 years. The MV Logos Hope will be in the Bay from 9th to 19th June. The public are invited to set foot on deck of this magnificent floating bookshop. (Heilie Combrinck)

Dit was alles deel van die stryd wat lede van Despatch Spinning Club mekaar aangesê het om te kyk wie gaan in dié tyd die meeste vetjies wegtrap. Onder die leiding van instruktrise Magda Kruger, is daar vanaf begin Februarie tot einde April behoorlik gesweet om te bepaal wie die gewigsverlieskroon gaan dra.
“Daar is streng reëls verbonde aan die kompetisie. Die deelnemers is elke Maandag geweeg om te sien wie vaar die beste,” het Kruger gesê. Byna elke vrou in die wêreld weet dat dit baie makliker is om gewig op te tel as om dit te verloor. Daarom was daar ’n paar goue reëls. “Indien enige deelnemers gewig opgetel het in plaas daarvan om dit te verloor, moes hulle ‘n boete van R5 betaal. As ‘n deelnemer nie opdaag vir ‘n sessie nie, moes ‘n boete van R20 betaal word. Dit is nou behalwe as
hulle siek was, dan verstaan mens tog dat oefening nie goed is nie.” Hierdie reëls klink dalk ‘n bietjie té streng, maar die wenners kan beaam dat om by reëls te hou, juis die goue reël vir sukses is. Shanelle van Eck was die uiteindelike wenner nadat sy ‘n totaal van 23.5kg weggetrap
het. Spinning is goeie kardiovaskulêre oefening. Die weerstand waarteen jy trap moet gereeld verander en omdat jou hart die hele tyd in ’n verskillende tempo klop, is dit baie goed vir vetverbranding en fiksheid. )Die volgende gewig-aftrap kompetisie begin in Junie.

HEILIE COMBRINCK Muir College Boys’ High School welcomes its newly appointed Headmaster, Robin Stephenson, who officially took up office on May 3rd. Stephenson is not a stranger to Uitenhage, as he commenced his teaching career at Daniel Pienaar THS back in 1984. He taught at the “Tigers” for two years before moving on to various other schools in building his career. Stephenson then settled at Graeme College in Grahamstown, where he was the Deputy Headmaster for the last four years prior to his return to Uitenhage. o you know the difference between daycare, crèche, Educare, nursery schools, and pre-primaries? Here we unpack what they normally offer so you can make the best choice. Many of us use the words daycare, crèche, Educare, nursery school and pre-primary fairly interchangeably. However, some mothers become quite upset when they realise the type of care their toddler or pre-schooler is receiving is not what they’d been expecting. I’ve used the term grade R to refer to this class for children aged 5 turning 6, but some schools call this grade 0 (and grade 00 the year before) – while others refer to grade 0 as the year children are four turning 5. Citrus exporter partner with Zuurberg race One of South Africa’s largest citrus exporters, the Sundays River Citrus Company, has announced a partnership with the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain bike race. The boutique three-day event traverses 200km, part of which runs through the citrus orchards of the Sundays River Valley just outside Port Elizabeth. “The farm scenery is absolutely phenomenal,” said Det Bakker, liaison officer for the SRCC Foundation Trust, the company’s social
responsibility arm. “It’s a green belt of lush orchards that contrasts with the nearby Karoo desert.” He said the trust worked to bring about improvements in the valley from which the fruit was sourced. “We focus on the health, environment and education needs of the residents, many of whom are historically disadvantaged. As the Great Zuurberg Trek is so much part of the valley, we partnered with the race to get more

exposure within the mountain bike fraternity.” Det said they hoped that the event would be a springboard for other companies to invest in the valley. “Through this we hope to be able to get more businesses to understand our needs and contribute to the worthwhile cause that we stand for. It’s all about the people. There is so much we can do, so much we want to do. We hope this will open up opportunities

It will be held at Mangaung Metro Indoor Sport Centre, Bloemfontein from 8 to 17 July.

Sunridge Village family walk The Sunridge Village Family Run/ Walk will be held on Saturday at 07:00. Being the 10th anniversary of this event, organised by the Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, it promises to be the greatest to date. A special, 10th anniversary commemorative medal will be handed to the first 1 220 finishers in the 10km, as well as the first 1 220 finishers in the 5km events. This special medal is designed to be used as a key ring as well. “We welcome the star runners from all over the Eastern Cape”, said Les Barnes, president of PEAAC. This will once again be a fun filled family affair with fantastic hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes. These include a R2 500 shopping experience from
Sunridge SuperSpar. “Although an official EPA Participating Road Running League event, it also caters for the whole family with distances of both 5km and 10km,” says Suzanne Fincham, Centre Manager at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre. “The school with the most bulk entries in the 5km race will earn themselves a R1 000 prize. This year sees the staging of the third annual Nanaga MTB Race, organised by local events company Free Spirit Adventures. Die spanne van Uitenhage en Despatch se pak voorspelers het mekaar van die staanspoor af behoorlik aangevat. Progress was die span wat sommer in die eerste vyf minute die telbord begin verander. Met hulle vinnige spelpatroon het hulle ook daarin geslaag om in die eerste helfte hul bunuspunt aan te teken. Despatch het in die tweede helfte met nuwe moed, vinnig teruggekom in die wedstryd en ’n drie binne die eerste minuut aangeteken. Progress se verdediging was rotsvas. Veral Curtis Sias met sy plettervatte het onder sy opposisie gemaai. Sy briljante spel het gemaak dat hy as die speler van die wedstryd aangewys is. Progress het ’n totaal van sewe drieë gedruk teenoor Despatch se drie drieë. Die eindtelling was 39 - 26.
