Metro’s financial stability gets nod “
Prudent management of capital grants, creditworthiness, political stability and financial performance has helped boost investor sentiment and reduce the negative outlook of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality”, said Executive Mayor, Dr Danny Jordaan. This comes hot on the heels of rating agency Moody’s improved the municipality’s credit rating with an increase of three rating notches, to Aa1.za. The Metro is under-borrowed and has cash reserves to the tune of R2 billion and has over “a period of a year managed its finances in a prudent and sustainable way; reignite confidence and mobilise the resources of all of our social partners to give hope to our youth through training and economic opportunities. “We are preoccupied with growing and diversifying the economy while focusing on the golden thread – delivery of basic services
such as waste removal, dealing with illegal connections and assistance to the poor programme,” added Mayor Jordaan. To crown it all, Moody’s Investors Services, the international credit rating company has favourably assessed the Metro and attributed the positive outlook to “the city’s solid financial performance and lower and declining debt levels. “Continued fiscal consolidation has led to a continuously robust financial performance and a comfortable liquidity position.” “This all is a great tribute to the cooperation between a whole-of-government and the sterling political and administrative leadership of the Metro. Everyone who played a role must be congratulated for their commitment and help, which has been a great part of the above successes. Meanwhile the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) announced the results of its
annual economic barometer study directed at residents and business alike. The study featured areas such as Helenvale, Central, North End, Richmond Hill, Uitenhage CBD, Kings Beach and New Brighton. On average 48 % of all businesses in these areas made improvements to their properties in 2014, up from 37.4% in 2013. In the residential sector, 39,3% of property owners made improvements to their homes. The total invested by businesses across all areas in 2014 was R23,8 million, and by residents a total of R4,3 million. The average value of the improvements made to properties by business owners was R155 657, while the amount recorded in the residential market was R14 716. Top urban nodes The three top urban nodes in which business owners made improvements to properties were Kings Beach (83%), Richmond Hill (68,3%) and Helenvale (65%).
In the residential category, the highest number of home improvements were recorded in Central (75%), Richmond Hill (33,7%) and Kings Beach (33%). Richmond Hill recorded the highest average value of property improvements in the business category (R288 036), followed by New Brighton (R272 500) and Kings Beach (R260 000). In the residential market, Kings Beach home owners invested the highest average (R137 000), followed by North End (R31 184) and then Central (R21 667). Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan was equally ecstatic at the results of the MBDA survey and said: “For as long as our primary focus is on job creation, the Metro is going to be a prosperous home for all. “Our agency continues to do fantastic work and with our economic blue print – the Five Golden Years, the Metro will never be the same again.” (-REPORTER)
‘Despatch-gholfdag’ ’n slenter, maan klub CARALEE DORFLING Konrad Schoultz, visepresident van die Despatch-krieketklub, het die publiek gewaarsku teen ’n geldmaakslenter waarby dié klub se naam betrek word. Twee maatskappye op die dorp is reeds deur ’n man met ’n vals geldinsamelingsbrief vir die Despatch-krieketklub se gholfdag genader. “Dit het onder ons aandag gekom dat daar geld ingesamel word ten bate van die
Superspar Despatch-krieketklub se gholfdag. Daar is nié so ’n dag nie,” het Schoultz gewaarsku. Toevallig ken die eienaars van twee maatskappye wat reeds om “borggeld” genader is, vir Schoultz en kon hulle dit by hom verifieer. Hy wonder egter hoeveel ander mense en maatskappye al deurgeloop het, het Schoultz bygevoeg. Ook Paul Barnes, eienaar van die Despatch Superspar (wat volgens die brief ’n borg is), het gesê hy is van geen gholfdag bewus nie. Hy glo die geldinsameling is ’n
bedrogspul. In aansluiting by Barnes het Schoultz hardop gewonder hoekom hul klub nou spesifiek ’n geldinsameling sal hou, want “die krieketseisoen is verby”. Hy glo egter dat die “goedgelowige” inwoners van die dorp maklik ’n rat voor die oë gedraai kan word, aangesien die krieketklub al voorheen twee mini-gholfdae aangebied het. “Ons het die vorige gholfdae wyd en syd geadverteer, so die gholfdag kan geloofwaardig voorkom.”
Hy het bygevoeg dat enige persoon wat geld namens die krieketklub wil insamel, in besit van ’n amptelike brief van die krieketklub moet wees. “Die geldinsamelingsbrief moet met die klub se amptelike briefhoof gepaard gaan, en die oorspronklike handtekening van Riel Leonard, president van die Despatchkrieketklub, sal onderaan die brief wees.” Schoultz het ook onderneem om enige verdere voorval as ’n saak van bedrog by die polisie aan te meld.

“As jy jonk is, sien jy kans vir baie dinge,” onthou Jerome Dempsey (71) daardie poging 50 jaar gelede wat die Oosterlig se voorblad gehaal het. “Ek is uitgedaag om Ray Duval se wêreldrekord van 100 uur, 1 minuut en 15 sekondes sat te speel agter my stel tromme. “Hy het dié rekord in Londen se Club Bongo opgestel.” In daardie jare was Dempsey ’n lid van Flashes, tóé die beste rock-band in die Baai. Deesdae bedryf hy sy eie musiekateljee op Uitenhage. Maar hy onthou “daai poging” nog soos gister. “Wayne Luck het gesê ‘Komaan, Jerome, jy kan dit doen . . . dis maklik’. “Ek het gewonder. En toe besluit ek om die kans te waag!” Luck het toe dadelik gereël dat dié wêreldrekordpoging in die vertoonvenster van die destydse OK Bazaar, in Port Elizabeth se

Keeping children afloat in digital tsunami Brad Huddleston, author of the Dark Side of Technology and Digital Cocaine, will be in Port Elizabeth to talk to parents about how they can protect their children in the face of a “digital tsunami”. Brad Huddleston says, “Digital or Internet Addiction is listed as a mental condition that includes anxiety, depression, emotional outbursts, restlessness, memory loss and selfharm”. The average time kids of ages 8-18 spend
on technology is seven hours and 38 minutes per day. Smartphones, tablets, computers, iPads, and even the TV screen are the gateway to this phenomenon of digital addiction. “One just has to look at the statistics to see how much at risk our youngsters are,” says Daron Mann, who will be hosting presentations to parents and teachers in Port Elizabeth and East London. “The world is becoming increasingly connected – it is estimated that 1,2 billion smart
phones will enter the market over the next five years. One in every seven people on the planet is on Facebook, and over 90 per cent of people under 18 play video and online games. Huddleston is an international expert in the field, has a degree in computer science, 22 years industry experience, and is currently collaborating with the research and neuroscience de-
partments at UNISA. He equips parents and children with knowledge and identifies warning signs of misuse or overuse of technology. )The talk will be hosted at Pearson High School, Port Elizabeth on June 2nd, 19:00. Tickets are R100 and are available at Computicket and Pearson High School.
More than 162 arrested in U’hage Cluster Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster are resolute in the fight against crime and have arrested more than 162 suspects, through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend. According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Gerda Swart, a total of 44 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R22 000. “The suspects were arrested on charges relating to reckless and negligent driving, robbery, possession of suspected stolen goods, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and malicious damage to property. “Four arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. Eighteen persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. A total of 59 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes,” said Lt Swart. The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property. ATKV Applous streekuitdunne Die ATKV-Applous nasionale koorkompetisie het begin in 1977 as ‘n proeflopie en was so suksesvol dat dit nou al vir 39 jaar voortbestaan. Die aantal kore groei elke jaar en vanjaar is daar 185 inskrywings ontvang, van oor die hele Suid Afrika en Namibië. Die kompetisie bestaan uit twee rondtes. Eerstens die Streekfeeste waar beoordelaars na kore uit verskillende streke, in al nege provinsies asook Namibië gaan luister. Daarna kom slegs kore wat 80%+ (goud) ontvang het, in aanmerking vir ‘n uitnodiging na die finaal. Die finaal word vanjaar (3-6 Augustus) in Stellenbosch aangebied. Die Oos-Kaap
Streekrondte word Dinsdag, 24 Mei gehou. Die middagsessie is by Hoërskool Strelitzia op Uitenhage en die aandsessie sal plaasvind by Hoërskool Westering in Port Elizabeth. Pupils enter school for ‘Handevat’ project Two matric learners from Muir College, namely Aphiwe Zinto and Trent Burness entered their school into the ATKV Handevat project this term and succeeded. The ATKV Handevat project is a community service programme where the goal is to motivate a school from a privileged community to tackle a constructive, sustainable project with a school in a disadvantaged community. The project, jointly undertaken by the two schools, must be implemented in the disadvantaged community, for the benefit of the less privileged community. Muir College was chosen as one of the top
15 schools in the country to take part in the ATKV Handevat project. ATKV will analyse the schools’ progress throughout the project and then decide which school wins. The prizes are (for both schools): 1st Place R30 000, 2nd Place R20 000, 3rd Place R10 000 “The under privileged school we have partnered up with is Little Flower R.C Primary School,” said Aphiwe Zinto from Muir College. “Little Flower is a Catholic school with 643 learners. The school has a ‘no fee’ status due to its poverty profile since 2012. Having to

close down their previous small library for classroom expansion, the 643 children have had no way to research or get books for leisure reading. “Because of scarce resources the school is unable to establish and run a resourceful library. Therefore Muir College decided to renovate the library of Little Flower R.C Primary School,” said Zinto. Muir's school library will assist Little Flower learners in that; it is central to learning and easily accessible to the learners of Little Flower and it also plays a key role as a place for encouraging innovation, curiosity, and prob-
lem solving. The library is a catalyst for literacy and reading and for teaching and scaffolding inquiry learning. Muir College intends to increase and replace the books in the current library, to get three computers and to restore the library so that it is appealing to the children. Muir’s own ‘Michael’ wins talent competition A Grade 6 learner at Muir College Boys’ High School was declared the overall winner of the school’s talent competition. The independent panel of judges, named Keasan Solomon the winner, with his outstanding copybook performance of the late king of pop, Michael Jackson. Keason was the only primary entrance and had to compete against very talented senior learners. What makes his performance even more special is the fact that he did most of the choreography himself. Keason definitely gave meaning to the motto of Muir, Nec Pluribus Impar, meaning “Second to None”. This competition, last year, was won by Loyiso Gijana who also finished in the top 4 of Idols South Africa.

VW 5km fun run of camaraderie T
he second annual 5km Volkswagen Fun Run will be held on Saturday at the PeoplePavilion in Uitenhage. Last year’s inaugural race attracted nearly 1 000 runners including the 2016 Hannover Marathon winner and Rio Olympics medal hopeful, Lusapho April who resides in Uitenhage. The 2016 Volkswagen Fun Run is once again open to the public, VWSA employees and their loved ones. The race will start at 07:00 from the PeoplePavilion before making its way through the Volkswagen Factory and will finish back at the PeoplePavilion.
The winners of the male and female categories will each receive R1 000 prize money. The second and third place winners will receive R500 and R250 respectively. “Our R30 million investment into the PeoplePavilion is certainly paying off and is giving our employees world-class biokinetics care, affordable gym as well as a place to meet and socialise,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. )Registration forms are available at Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage and Brian Bands Sports in Port Elizabeth. DP cricketer off to Sri Lanka
Daniel Pienaar THS first team cricketer and Grade 11 learner Kenan Smith has been selected for the South Africa U/19 cricket team. The team will tour Sri Lanka from 18th June to 15th July 2016. Kenan started his cricket career as a 12 year-old when he was encouraged by his coach, Zarier Sirkhotte, to join Union Uitenhage Cricket Club. Kenan played in the men’s league. Kenan represented EP U/15 in 2014 and EP U17 in 2015. He was also a member of the SA U/17 training camp in Pretoria in 2015. Kenan moved to his current club Northville CC in 2015 when his coach started coaching there. He plays in the Clubs Premier League. Kenan also represented Warriors U19 team at the Cubs Week in January 2016. “It is an absolute pleasure coaching Kenan as he is one of the most hardworking and disciplined cricketers that I have ever coached. Kenan practises four hours per day and his work ethic is unbelievable,” said Zarier Sirkhotte. What makes Kenan’s achievement more special is that he is only 17 years old.
