Accounting winter school to boost learners’ results N

elsonMandela Metropolitan University’s Accounting Winter School programme, geared towards helping Grade 11 and 12 pupils improve their marks and their chances of attending university, boasts an impressive track record. Almost a third of the on average 500 pupils who attend the Grade 12 winter school successfully registered for degrees or diplomas at NMMU. An analysis comparing their June matric results with their December results has revealed that many of them shot up by as much as 30%. Overall, more than half showed improved results from June to December. Lyle Ressouw from Uitenhage, one of the Winter School’s top achievers in 2014, came third in the province overall in December 2015. This year’s week-long Accounting Winter School for Grade 12s, sponsored by Deloitte, takes place from 4 to 8 July, while the 4 day Grade 11 winter school, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCooper, takes place from 4 to 7 July. Ansulene Prinsloo, NMMU Accounting 1 lecturer and coordinator of NMMU’s Accounting Winter School programme said, “The main aim of the Accounting Winter Schools is to help learners obtain higher admission points scores (APS), which is their entrance ticket to higher education.”

Grade 11 Accounting curriculum. “The foundation of Grade 11 is so important – if this foundation is not solid enough, learners are going to battle in Grade 12. Pupils don’t realize the importance of their Grade 11 marks – these also have to be sent in with their forms when applying to study at a university,” said Prinsloo. In addition to providing funding to cover the operating costs of the schools, Deloitte and PwC are donating files for every attendee, as well as 60 lucky draw prizes. There will also be prizes for the top three participants as well as the most improved pupil. VW FunRun draws hundreds of runners O

ver 800 people took part in the second annual Volkswagen FunRun hosted at Volkswagen Group South Africa’s PeoplePavilion in Uitenhage last Saturday. The 5km FunRun route started at the PeoplePavilion before taking the participants

through the Volkswagen Factory and back to the PeoplePavilion. “The annual 5km FunRun is one of the many sporting events hosted at the PeoplePavilion. We are very grateful for the support that we have received from our employ-

ees and their loved ones as well as local communities,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director: Volkswagen Group South Africa. The men’s winner, Melikaya Frans crossed the finish line with a time of 13:59, followed by Zolani Ngqaqa in second place with a time of 14:10 and rounding off the top three was

One-of-a-kind battle of marimba bands In an one-of-a-kind Marimba Festival which will be held in Uitenhage on Saturday, there will not only be a battle of bands, but also a spectacular mass band item. “This festival truly is one-of-a-kind. There will be no formal seating for the audience, as the eight (8) bands will be arranged all around the sides of the hall,” said René Zietsman, co-ordinator of this musical event. “Audience members will take a chair and choose their own spot. “The festival is about celebrating the marimba as a versatile music instrument. The music prepared by the bands will definitely take worries away!” said Zietsman.

The competition will all take place on a friendly and informal basis, with a number of mystery prizes up for grabs. During the course of Saturday morning (May 28th) from 10:00 to 13:00, the Battle of the Junior Bands, Battle of Senior Bands, Last Band Standing and a mass band item will be part of the programme. The festival will be held at Strelitzia High School and tickets are available at the doors at R20/adult and R10/scholar. Participating bands are Access Music Project, Mount Pleasant Primary, Queen’s College, Graeme College, Laerskool Cradock, Strelitzia High School, College Hill Primary and Gonubie Primary.

Medical male circumcision outreach The Port Elizabeth Medical Male Circumcision will undertake an outreach to the Rosedale community to perform circumcision on males from the ages of 15 to 50+ years. Community & international involvement The Ministry has beem running a community project in Moeggesukkel for the past five years, where they minister and feed the needy and do a lot of social upliftment and dignity restoration. Young bowlers’ historical victory <These under 25 year olds won the Personal Trust Classic bowling competition, which is a first for young bowlers in a men’s classic. The competition was held last weekend at the Port Elizabeth Bowls Club. Three of the players are from Uitenhage and Despatch. Here are (from left) Rudie Herbst (Despatch Bowling Club), Wihann Visser (Despatch Bowling Club), Alexander Schwartz (Uitenhage Bowling Club and skipper of the team) and Mario Lewis (Gelvan Bowls Club). There were 32 teams of four players each who played in the Classic, including two SA national players.
