VWSA Uitenhage plant best in world

olkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) plant in Uitenhage has been recognised as the top manufacturing plant in the global Volkswagen production network in 2015. VWSA achieved the highest index score of 113.2% amongst the 13 Volkswagen plants around the world. This was the first time that Uitenhage was rated as the top manufacturing plant since the Beetle production started in August 1951. The 13 global Volkswagen production plants are all measured on the same key performance indicators such as production volumes, production quality, costs per unit, units produced per employee, health and safety incidents and the factory’s improvements in reducing its carbon footprint. Key to VWSA achieving these results were the 120 000 Polos and Polo Vivos produced in 2015 at much better than budgeted cost levels. Another key contributing factor was exceeding the Think Blue Factory targets which were set in 2010 to reduce energy consumption, water usage, waste and emissions by 25%. By the end of 2015, VWSA had exceeded the target by 17.2% achieving 42.2%. Of the 120 000 cars produced in 2015, over 66 000 Polos were exported to predominantly right-hand-drive markets such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and Ireland. In South Africa, Volkswagen maintained its dominance of the passenger car market for the sixth consecutive year with Polo Vivo and Polo being the first and second best-selling passenger car models respectively. “This recognition could not have come at a better time for our company,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. “This exciting news will bolster our shareholders’ confidence in our company as we have commenced with our R4.5 billion investment plans for new products announced last year. “It will further enhance VWSA’s status and ability to deliver and exceed its targets at the required quality levels for both the domestic and important export markets.” “I am extremely proud of all the employees at Volkswagen Group South Africa, who have made this recognition by our parent company possible, and thank them for their hard work and contribution,” Schaefer said. R10 000 offered Uitenhage detectives are offering a reward of R10 000 for information which may lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects involved in the murder of Vivianne Wait. The 49 year old man was murdered at Plot G4 in Kruisriver, Uitenhage at 10:00 on Tuesday morning, 3 May 2016. It is alleged that Wait went to the Rangers scrap yard at the plot to collect spare parts when he was attacked and stabbed by two unknown suspects. “The suspects fled from the scene and are still at large. Dié inligting is vervat in ’n verslag van Amat, ’n maatskappy wat die metro help om elektrisiteitsverliese te verminder. In die verslag wat by die metro se komitee vir infrastruktuur, energie en ingenieurswese ter tafel gelê is, sê Amat die munisipaliteit verloor elke maand sowat R21 miljoen aan kragdiefstal. Volgens Amat is dit 18 miljoen kWh elek-

trisiteit per maand die afgelope jaar waarvoor die metro nie rekenskap kan gee nie. Ingevolge die kontrak met Amat wat in Desember onderteken is, het die metro onderneem om 5 000 meters per maand te verskaf. Van die 25 000 meters wat sedert Desember verskaf moes word, het net 350 die lig gesien. Die aankondiging deur Amat kom te midde van ’n verwagte styging van 7,64% in die metro se prys van elektrisiteit op 1 Julie. Dié verhoging en ook ander hoër tariewe vir basiese dienste is op die sakelys by ’n volle raadsvergadering. Die voorgestelde verhogings waaroor die raad moet stem, sluit in: eiendomsbelasting (9,5%), water (9%), sanitasie (9%) en vullisverwydering (9%).

Adrenalin rush for Wildhearted festival goers For the first time ever in the Eastern Cape festival goers can twist, flip, spin, somersault and freefall before landing on a giant airbag at the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees. The Adventure Province experience is being sponsored by Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism in line with the branding of the Eastern Cape. Festival goers brave enough to jump will be taken 14 metres in the air before they take the leap into fresh air, with a giant airbag breaking their fall. Jumps cost R50 per person. Another high-adrenaline show is the extreme motorcycle show by the hunky 11-time South African trials champion “one wheel” Brent le Riche. This festival favourite will be doing wild and wonderful tricks on his motorcycle on Saturday at 11:15 to 11:45 and 13:30 to 14:00, on Sunday from 09:15 to 09:45 and 11:15 to 11:45.

Tracking dog ideal to trace wounded animals HEILIE COMBRINCK

t is hunting season, a time of the year that many keen hunters are looking forward to, getting out in the bush or veld and hopefully shooting whatever animal it is that they have on their hunting list.

The touchy issue of hunting is when the expedition has to come to an unfortunate halt the moment an animal is wounded. It is a hunter’s responsibility to do everything humanly possible to recover the wounded animal. “This often takes hours to follow the trail and track down the wounded animal. Especially when the terrain is dense or mountainous. But it has to be done and therefore a tracking dog is of great help,” said Christo Claassens, a professional hunter and tracking dog trainer from Uitenhage. “Time is money, the longer it takes to find the wounded animal, the less time is left to continue with the hunt. This is when a tracking dog comes in very handy and it will be far less time consuming to find the wounded animal. “Let’s face it, a dog can do a much better job as they are trained to trail by scent,

whilst we humans must use our eyes,” said Claassens. He is the owner of Rex, a young tracking dog. Rex is a cross Red-tick/Blue-tick Coonhound Dog, which originates from Tennessee in the USA. “Tracking is in his blood. He has an amazing drive and can focus for up to 3km before I have to give him a break. “This breed is extremely alert and able to work over difficult terrain in bad weather conditions.” Claassens explained that each dog has an unique “voice” which can usually be recognized by owners. “Red-ticks do not have a normal sounding bark, but rather a loud bay cry that almost sounds like a short howl.” Rex is trained to sniff out wounded game by tracking blood, body fluids and warm spoor. “I simply love Rex. He is an absolute star. It takes many, many hours to train these dogs and thus a tracking device, supplied by the Uitenhage Vet, was implanted in Rex to make sure he would not get lost as a result of a strenuous track,” said Claassens. )For more information regarding tracking dogs contact Christo Claassens at 072 201 1280.

mpty houses make buyers suspicious – and generally inclined to make lower offers than they would on homes that are still occupied and furnished. However, says Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group, there is much that owners and their agents can do to make an empty home more appealing. “Of course there are all sorts of reasons for a home to be sold unfurnished. The owners may have had to relocate in a hurry for work, for example, or may have been letting to tenants who have now moved out. “But buyers don’t know that, and will be much more likely to think that the property has been on the market so long that the owners had to move anyway, or that there is something wrong with it that has kept it from being sold. “And this can quite easily lead them to the assumption that the seller must be desperate and will accept even a really low offer – especially if the property is dirty or neglected and is surrounded by a dying garden.” In addition, he says, those buyers who do get past the front door of an empty house will often struggle to visualise how they will live there. “In short, it is really worthwhile for absent sellers to ensure that their homes will still make a good first impression by enlisting the help of an experienced estate agent who understands their situation and agrees to oversee all the work necessary to keep their properties looking good for prospective buyers. “This is also a good idea from a security point of view since it will mean that only one person or agency has the keys, remotes and security codes, and that access to the property is controlled. “ Davel says that if you are an owner in this

situation, things to discuss with your agent include: . Having the house dusted and cleaned at least a couple of times a month; . Hiring a garden service or gardener to come in regularly and keep the lawns mowed, the driveway swept and the plants watered; . Making sure the pool is kept clean and properly ‘dosed’; . Making sure the post box is regularly cleared of any junk mail; and . Renting some furniture if necessary to “stage” the property to create a better sense of size and proportion. There are also several things you can do before you leave to improve your home’s appeal. These include: . Repainting, inside and out, in neutral colours. Fresh paint is the number one attraction for prospective buyers looking at empty homes; . Making your front entrance look inviting by repainting or revarnishing the door if necessary and removing all clutter from the front path, steps or porch; . Getting the property professionally cleaned top to bottom as you move out; and . Leaving curtains or blinds in place to make it look more lived-in. And finally, he says, you should take into account that security is also a vital part of the package from the buyer’s point of view. “You don’t want prospective buyers to arrive for a viewing only to find that the property has been broken into or vandalised, so it is worth keeping up the payments to your security company while it remains unoccupied, and installing timers that will turn some lights on and off every night.”

Marathon runner now VW brand ambassador

op marathon runner and 2016 Rio Olympics medal hopeful, Lusapho April has joined Volkswagen as the brand ambassador for Polo Vivo. Lusapho, who was born and bred in Uitenhage, is one of South Africa’s top marathon runners that will be participating at the Rio Olympics in August. Lusapho’s most recent achievement was his third win of the Hannover Marathon in April 2016. He also won the race in 2011 and 2013. Yesterday, 30 May, the excited Lusapho received keys to his new sporty Polo Vivo GTS from Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director: Volkswagen Group South Africa. “Lusapho embodies excellence, determination and a passion to succeed and is thus an ideal candidate to represent not only Uitenhage and the Eastern Cape but of course Volkswagen too. “We are proud to officially welcome Lusapho to the Volkswagen family,” said Schaefer. Mountain bike pros flock to Zuurberg Mountain bike pros Andrew Hill and Adriaan Louw will be out to re-assert their authority on the three-day PwC Great Zuurberg Trek when it takes place from June 3 to 5. The TIB Insurance-Contego team made light work of the inaugural event two years ago, claiming a hat-trick of stage wins en route to the overall title. Last year Hill, who races out of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, joined forces with Cape Town’s Chris Wolhuter, but had to settle for the runners-up spot. “Coming back to Zuurberg is always a treat for me,” said the 34-year-old Hill, who placed fifth overall in last month’s nine-day Old Mutual joBerg2c. “I really think the event has something special, even to the seasoned mountain biker. “The trails, views and the Eastern Cape hospitality are up there among the best in the country and I love heading back to take part.” Hill said he was looking forward to partnering with the 25-year-old Louw, who hails from Paarl in the Western Cape, for another shot at the title. “Adriaan and I get on well off the bike, but, more importantly, we gel on the bike, really working together when it is called for. “He is going well at the moment and it will be a great advantage to be able to tap into his experience and strengths in our bid to regain the title.” While their focus will be on racing, Hill said they were looking forward to the overall experience of competing at Zuurberg after a busy start to the season. “The three days are certainly going to be something special for us. I’m looking forward to the fun aspect of the trails and the relaxed atmosphere at the hotel after each day’s riding.” Hill said the terrain set the race apart from other events with the daily finish at the top of Zuurberg Pass. “It is a tester for the racing guys and provides a great sense of achievement for the rest of the field. “I also enjoy the views on the queen stage (day two) where you can see the Karoo on the one side and the coast on the other.”
