Lions on track ‘to serve’ HEILIE COMBRINCK

hen it comes to serving a community, the Uitenhage Lions Club - which consists of citizens offering their precious time to voluntarily raise funds and assist where there is need - are exceptional! In celebrating its 10th year of their successful Winter Jersey Campaign, which involves donating jerseys to identified scholars, the Club also want to assist in the restoration of the Old Railway Station Museum. Lion President Juan Hay said, “The purpose of the Winter Jersey Campaign is to aid children who are captured in the vicious circle of poverty, to attend school, to be educated and become literate. Thus assisting them with a better quality of life.” As most museums are captured in the circle of diminishing funds, the Lions appeals to the UD community for assistance to renovate and restore the Old Railway Station in Market Street for future generations, which include beneficiaries of the Winter Jersey Campaign. The Station was formally opened in 1875, linking Port Elizabeth to Uitenhage. For many years it was one of the main sources of

employment in the area. The culde-sac station with its quaint little station building was known as “The Doll’s House”. According to Lion Denis Murphy who did extensive research regarding the station, it was closed in 1951 with all activities transferred to the station on the main line. The old Railway Station was declared a Heritage site in 1975 with the establishment of the Railway Station Museum in 1976.

Old Railway Station restoration “There are major refurbishment requirements including structural restoration. To this effect there is an appeal to local businesses and the public to support this jewel box of Uitenhage,” said Murphy. The Museum has two locomotives being a class 6br and 10br with some coaches which formed part of the steam era from 1876 to 1951. It also includes the Dolls House where the station master lived, his office, the luggage room, restaurant , the ticket office and the bar including a dining coach. “Through education of our past new challenges will not only serve to celebrate Uitenhage as the 5th oldest town in South Africa and with support would create new avenues of job creation for our community,” said District Governor Bokkie Oberholzer. All funds raised through the sale of

the animals will go towards park development and conservation-related expenses,” he says. There will be big-screen rugby for those who cannot make it to the SA-Irish test in Port Elizabeth, with actors Simon (David Louw), Reitz Bekker (Sean van Noordwyk), Blitz (Werner Coetser) and Renate (Christel van den Bergh) from the soapie “Getroud met Rugby” helping to cheer for the Bokke. Artists on the Windhoek Stage – the biggest stage in the Eastern Cape – include ADAM, Broers, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, Arno Jordaan, Emo Adams, Manie Jackson and Blackbyrd. On Sunday the festival will also be celebrating 40 years of Country music with Lance James, Barbara Ray, Jody Wayne, Clive Bruce and Tommy Dell. A total of 20 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes. Five liquor premises were visited in the Uitenhage area to ensure that they complied with the Liquor Act.

Chance to play in movie filmed in U’hage HEILIE COMBRINCK

The talent is here. In Uitenhage. After all, life is about giving, not taking.”

With these words, Willem Greeff from Dark Ripple Productions announced that the action movie Impervious Souls would be filmed in Uitenhage, with nearly the full cast to be made up out of locals. The idea of a movie in Uitenhage caught fire whilst Greeff, who many moons ago matriculated at Daniel Pienaar, enjoyed a braai together with Morné Rosser, an ex-Brandwag pupil. Rosser asked, “Why not a movie in Uitenhage?” Indeed why not? Greeff reasoned and soon the cameras will start rolling. Uitenhage make-up artist Geraldine Palmer Ferreira has been commissioned as the official make-up artist for Impervious Souls whilst Denise du Plessis and Desiré Ungerer have already been acknowledged as characters in the movie. Greeff explained the underlying theme of the film to the UD News: “The short route to be successful is a route not mapped. Impervious Souls is about the action and drama on this route.” “Two pals, Colin Andrew and Gordon Conway take the short route to what they think will bring them pride, but actually it is the highway to the underworld of conflict, gangsters and self-destruction.” Greeff, an executive producer, director, actor and writer, returned to his home town, for the shooting of his movie, after spending

nearly a decade in Miami as well as in Italy, Switzerland and various other countries. It was during a family holiday, visiting his parents Jacques and Sharon Greeff in Uitenhage, that he was offered the opportunity to enter the South African film industry. Greeff played the leading role in the Afrikaans movie, Gebore Talente, together with Angelique Gerber.

This time the focus will mainly be on scholars from local schools who will be granted the opportunity to showcase their acting skills.

Solomon Mahlangu learners’ ‘blue print’ for change wins national prize

olomon Mahlangu High School in KwaNobuhle is a school with learners dedicated to bring change.

Last year their project on “Late Coming” made national headlines, as their Y-CAP programme was announced the 2015 winner of the National Championships of the Youth Citizens Action Programme in the secondary school category. “What is even more exceptional is that their project to tackle late coming at school was accepted as part of the values and civic engagement pillars within the Department of Basic Education at District, Provincial and National and level” said Olwen Carson, Social Worker at Solomon Mahlangu High School. Mncedi Mtengwana, Principal of Solomon Mahlangu said, “I feel very proud of our learners. They have branded our school as a school for change, with their initiative on how to combat late-coming at school, being recognised on the highest levels. It is good to know that this initiative was also given the green light by Judge Edwin Cameron from the Constitutional Court, who was one of last year’s judges.” The Eastern Cape is a “national disaster” in terms of poverty - as reported as far back as 2009 by the Human Science Research Council and the African Resource Cooperation - in their findings to the Department of Social Development but Solomon’s 2016 team has an innovative project to tackle this problem of poverty at their school. “Our learners are impacted by high unemployment and the cancellation of Child Support Grant at 18 years of age, even though the child is still a learner. And there is abuse of grants by some parents,” said Mtengwana “I feel positive regarding the Grade 10’s topic for this year. It is ‘Poverty in Education’ and I believe it will once again make a difference in the lives of learners in our school as well as other schools. It will help promote not

The outreach will be held at the Rosedale Community Health Centre on Saturday starting at 07:30. According to Thulani Zulu, Acting Team Leader, medical male circumcision

has the benefit of reducing the chances of contracting HIV by 60%. Met ‘n baan en setperke wat in ‘n uitstekende toestand is, word daar groot tellings verwag,” het Colin Bartle, skoolhoof van Hoërskool Despatch gesê. Pryse ter waarde van R30 000 kan gewen word, maar deelnemers moet teenwoordig wees vir gelukkige trekkings. Klublede kan aan dié dag deelneem teen R140 per persoon en vir besoekers is dit R180. Daar word vanaf 07:30 afgeslaan en die prysuitdeling is om 18:00. Inskrywings is by die Uitenhage Gholfklub of by Hoërskool Despatch.

Gerrit Rautenbach, ‘n kranige bergfietsryer van HTS Daniel Pienaar, is vanjaar die kampioen van die OP XCO reeks se jeug-afdeling (15/16 jarige fietsryers). Die kompetisie bestaan uit ‘n aantal wedrenne en deelnemers verwerf punte vir die plekke wat in die onderskeie wedrenne behaal word. Aan die einde van die reeks wedrenne word die deelnemer met die meeste punte oor die hele reeks as die wenner aangewys. Rautenbach het ook aan die nasionale XCO kampioenskappe in Pretoria deelgeneem en ‘n 13de plek behaal. Tydens die nasionale XCO kampioenskappe in Port Elizabeth het hy ’n 9de plek behaal. Rautenbach is ’n graad 10 leerder aan HTS Daniel Pienaar en presteer deurlopend uitsonderlik in bergfietskompetisies. Hy behaal nie net eerste plekke in sy ouderdomsgroep nie, maar ook in ope-afdelings. -Heilie Combrinck
