sal doen, min wetende dat hulle dit net op ’n ander plek stort,” het Ott gesê. “Dit kos ongeveer R600 om ’n 210L oliedrom op die regte manier te herwin. Dit kan net deur een maatskappy, Enviroserv, in die Baai gedoen word en ek gee daai sertifikaat vir my kliënte.” Ott het dit ook benadruk dat gevaarlike afval soos onder meer olie en mediese afval glad nie op enige stortingsterrein gestort mag word nie. Mthubanzi Mniki, munisipale woordvoerder het twee dae nadat hy om kommentaar genader is, gesê hy wag nog vir terugvoering van die geskikte departement.

In an effort to quell crime and criminal activities in the Uitenhage Cluster a total 154 suspects were arrested over the past weekend. Crime prevention operations and high visibility patrols were conducted from Friday, 10 June 2016 until Monday, 13 June. The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from housebreaking and theft, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen goods, robbery common, theft out of and from motor vehicles and possession of drugs. “Six arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. A total of 45 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes and 12 for the illegal possession of drugs. 66 Traffic fines valued at more than R33 000 were issued,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. The South African Police Service call on the community to partner with them in the fight against crime.

She might have had a difficult time growing-up, hurt in a relationship, a single mother, emotionally in pain, yet she continues to be a woman of strength.” With these words printed on invitation cards to a Women Enrichment Evening, women from all spheres are encouraged to attend the event. It is organised by Nonzwanga (Sylvia) Thisani, a former educator and now local businesswoman, caterer and owner of Rainbow Guest House & Tours. The aim of the event is to have speakers from different areas to motivate, assist, empower and refresh women to be the best they can be in our society. “Women have the potential of changing our society for the better. Women can influence youth to be better and responsible citizens. Women can set high performance standards in the work area,” said Nonzwanga. “Some of us as women had very rough upbringings, some rough relationships with family, colleagues or partners. “We are supposed to raise kids, nurture

them and instil values and norms in their lives, excel in our roles as mothers, sisters and wives. “This evening is meant to inject some motivation, empowerment and appraisal for what women have managed to do and encourage the ones that have thrown in the towel to get up and continue with the journey of purpose-

Rockabilly Country Sunday at Wildsfees “Rockabilly Country” sounds will echo off the Rietberg Mountains which provide the backdrop for the annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees. It will be a celebration of 40 years of country music on Sunday June 26, with South African legends entertaining the crowds on the final day of the 2016 festival, which opens on Friday, June 24. The country legends rocking the wild and wonderful main Windhoek stage from 11:30 am on Sunday include Lance James, better known by his Wildsfees fans as “Big Daddy”, Barbara Ray or “Queen of Country”, Clive Bruce “Midnight Cowboy”, Jody Wayne “Little Jo” and Tommy Dell “The Killer” together with the Rodeo Girls. It will be the first time the performers have all been together on stage the Eastern Cape for their 2016 show.

Firearm licence renewal process The South African Police Service in Uitenhage have noticed with concern, that some firearm licence holders are not aware of the correct procedures that must be followed when a firearm licence needs to be renewed. The procedure in terms of Section 24 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (ACT 60 of 2000) is hereby explained. According to Section 24, the holder of the licence, who wishes to renew the licence must apply, to the Registrar, at least 90 days before the date of expiry of the licence for its renewal. Applications for the renewal thereof may, however be considered if the application is lodged in less than 90 days, in which case valid reasons for the late application must be provided on the application form. Licences for which renewal applications have been lodged will remain valid until the application has been decided upon. “We encourage firearm licence holders who need to renew their licences, of which the validity of the licence has already expired, to urgently visit their nearest police station and speak to the Designated Firearm Officer (DFO), who will assist them in the way forward with regard to the expired licence,” said Uitenhage police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart. )For more information about firearm licence applications and/or renewals thereof, holders are requested to contact their nearest police station and liaise with the DFO.

This not only takes up space which could rather be utilized more productively, but also causes frustration when you can’t find what you are looking for. “This frustration can end on Saturday as all your electronic waste is wanted for recycling,” said Melinda Labuscagne, project manager for some Integrated Waste Management Plan Projects. E-waste is defined as anything that runs on electricity and this gadgetry is full of lead, mercury, chemicals and other materials. According to EP Waste Management approximately 70 to 80 percent of all this old gadgetry goes straight to landfills. When dumped at landfill sites it can leach into the

soil and contaminate groundwater. “These electrical items are taken to recycling facilities where they are dismantled to reclaim the various component materials like precious metals, ferrous metals and plastics.” E-waste collection day at Albertyn On Saturday, June 18th from 09:00 to 13:00 the public are invited to bring all their old electronic gadgetry to the Albertyn sports ground (opposite Uitenhage Railway Station). “The previous e-wast days held at Albertyn were well supported with more than 2 tons of electrical material received,” said Labuscagne. ’n Groep van 10 mans het vroeër vanjaar ’n ses-dag tog aangepak vanaf Uitenhage na Middelburg. Stappare het op ’n aflosbasis die kruis, wat ’n wiel aan die onderkant het, te trek of stoot. Dié kruistog staan bekend as die 352 Walk for Jesus, wat aangepak is op pad na die Mighty Men konferensie. “Die roete van ons eerste kruistog was oor ’n afstand van 352 kilometer. Dit was taai, maar ’n lewensveranderende ervaring,” sê Heinrich Basson, een van die deelnemers en wie die kruis gemaak het. “Die motief van die kruistog was om verby die mens te kyk wat dra, en te dink aan die offer wat vir jou op die kruis gemaak is,” sê Basson. Hy vertel dat die spanne soggens om 04:00 begin stap het en dan so skuins voor 18:00 gestop het. “Elke dag op die pad was vol seëninge. Die gebeure was amper onwerklik. Maar dit is hoe die Here werk,” sê Basson.

Party mense het die kruis getrek en ander het dit gemakliker gevind om dit te stoot. Deelnemers het daagliks ’n lys van gebedsversoeke gekry, so daar is al die pad geloop en bid terwyl die kruis voortbeweeg. “Dit is mos stil daar in die Karoo-vlaktes. Daar gaan ’n gebed sommer reguit Hemel toe,” sê Basson. Pastoor Swanepoel van VEK Ebenhaezer, die gemeente wat die kruistog aangepak het, sê dit is ironies dat indien hulle sonder die kruis sou stap, verbygangers heel waarskynlik sou dink die manne se motor het iewers gaan staan. “Maar die kruis het mense vir ’n ander rede laat stop. Mense het gestop en gevra of hulle die kruis kan help dra. Daar was selfs ’n vrou wat aangedring het om ook met die kruis te stap. Haar man het later gesê ‘kom vrou, dit is nou genoeg, ons moet nou aangaan,’ maar sy het bly loop. “’n Egpaar wat op pad was om hul oorlede seun se as elders te gaan strooi het gestop en met ons gesels. Car men want to ‘drive’ away the cold HEILIE COMBRINCK Icy cold and wet weather conditions mean: get out those warm clothing and blankets, stay indoors and switch on the heater! But, the skimpily dressed homeless people have no choice other than to face the winter cold without any of those luxuries. At Algoa Toyota Uitenhage, three staff members are driving a campaign, collecting blankets and clothing in an effort to help those left to sleep under the stars. This is in line with Toyota South Africa’s Knights philosophy to set an example of being balanced professionals in their working environments, community, social and environmental activities. Dewald Oelofse, Automark manager and Knight at Algoa Toyota Uitenhage said, “We hand-out these blankets ourselves, by driving through the streets late at night, looking for the homeless and then giving them blankets. “It is quite an emotional experience. It makes you

realize how blessed you are. Especially when we spend some time chatting to the homeless people. “We urge the public to support this project by donating blankets. They can be dropped off at our show room or we will gladly collect. We also challenge other dealerships to do the same. Together we can make a difference in our community.” The donated clothing will be dropped off at Solidarity’s offices in support of their projects. On the 22 of June, at 18:00, Duncan Stewart, well-known Eastern Cape artist, will open the exhibition “A New Thing” at the venue, 15 Providence Place on the Old Seaview Road. Sonia Strumpfer, friend of Duncan and fellow artist, perceived a spirit of new things happening around her. Inspired by this she shared her idea of curating a group exhibition with the theme “A New Thing”. To complete the picture Hannalize Schultz, Eastern Cape ceramic artist, offered her beautiful atelier in Old Seaview Road as exhibition venue and also offered to host a teagar-

den - including Banting friendly eats - to visitors. This exhibition is a must see with a wide variety of art works by established Eastern Cape artists. Other participating artists include Josua Strumpfer, Sasol New Signatures award winning sculptor and winner of two PPC national art competitions as well as Evelien Burger, Llise Dodd, Stephanie Liebertrau, Tess Lovemore, Martie Marais, Robyn Mather and Anneen van Rooyen. )The exhibition will run daily from the 23rd till the 25th of June from 10:00 till 18:00.

Riebeek to stage ‘From Marilyn, with love’ Riebeek College will be proudly presenting a variety concert on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 June at 18:30 each night. Tickets can be bought at the school office at a cost of R30 per ticket. This festival of fun, and a farewell, is a celebration of the many years that Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek, has spent on the stage of Riebeek choreographing numbers and directing plays. As Woods is retiring at the end of 2016, it was decided that a concert would be a great way to recall the moments and memories of stage productions at Riebeek. The show is aptly called “From Marilyn, with love”. “I have thoroughly enjoyed the many shows

I have been involved in at Riebeek. It has been lovely to work with the children again, as principals find administrative tasks take them away from the core function of teaching – interacting with children,” said Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek College. “It is a fitting closure to my tenure at Riebeek to get back on to the stage where I have seen so many learners grow in self-confidence and make memories that taught them more than any lesson I could have presented in class. “I like to remind the girls that, ‘music nourishes the soul and inspires dreams’.” The show features each grade in a unique number ranging from the Grade 7s thrilling

with a Michael Jackson number and the Grade 5s evoking the Disney world of Frozen complete with a princess and snowman. The Riebeek Staff are also getting into the spirit of things and Anton Calitz (a well known musician and a teacher at Riebeek)

will be performing and Cathy Jane Mintoor (a Riebeek teacher, a soprano who performed in the reknowned NMMU choir and who has joined us from working with the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir) will be performing a few memorable songs from several Disney Movies.

Lede van die Eastern Cape 4x4 Challege Club en ander deelnemers wat kwalifiseer sal mekaar die stryd aansê tussen al die, soms byna onmoontlike hindernisse. Daar is ses verskillende klasse van voertuie in die kompetisie en elke klas moet tien hindernisse voltooi.

Dié senutergende aksie sorg jaarliks vir ’n groot toeskouerstal. Toegang tot vanjaar se ekstreem 4x4-kompetisie is R40 vir volwassenes en R15 vir skoliere. Vir die kleinspan sal daar ‘n dagsorgstalletjie wees waar hulle op ’n springkasteel en met ander speelaktiwiteite besig gehou kan word. Vir veiligheidsdoeleindes sal die polisie ook teenwoordig wees om patroleerwerk te doen. Visitors to the Baywest Mall will on Saturday be rewarded with a display of rally cars in action at the rear entrance to the Mall. Algoa Rally Club, the organisers of the 50k Challenge, supported by Baywest Mall have a special stage that consists of gravel, tar and a jump which will test the best of driving and navigational skills, starting from John Dory’s at 08:00 with documentation. Spectators will have a grand stand view from the Ice Rink entrance of the mall parking area, to see the cars performing along the parallel gravel and tar roads. Adjacent to the entrance parking area will be the service park where the service teams will service the vehicles between stages in full view of the spectators who are welcome. The first car will enter the Mall stage at 09:30. From Baywest the rally will move to the GMP Motorsport Super Stage next to PE Oval circuit along Mission Road. Here rally cars will compete in pairs, starting at 10:00. Jachtvlakte, Uitenhage The Jachtvlakte stage at Uitenhage will start at the pan at 11:30.
